MATURE MARKET TRAVEL PLANNER 1

The priority on safety of our community and visitors is one of the reasons that San Antonio is a top vacation and business destination in the country. San Antonio’s civic, business and association communities have joined forces to ensure that as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis we maintain safety as the most important aspect. As part of our community’s commitment to health and safety, Bexar County has established a requirement that all people 10 years of age or older wear a cloth face covering over their nose and mouth when in a public place where it is difficult to keep six (6) feet away from other people, such as visiting a store or indoor attraction. San Antonio business owners and associations have produced The Greater. Safer. Together. Pledge (in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance) with the aim to protect the health and safety of employees and customers.

GREATER SAN ANTONIO BUSINESS OWNERS PLEDGE TO:

• Use face covering • Practice social distancing • Conduct temperature checks • Provide hand sanitizer • Follow CDC cleaning protocols • Implement contactless payment when possible • General COVID-19 awareness training for employees • REPEAT! • “Greater, Safer San Antonio”

THE CULTURE

A

H e a r t

o f

t its core, our city is dynamic. Cultures from all around the world come together in San Antonio. Explore them all at our renowned museums, galleries, and historic sites. Discover History For Yourself Historical and cultural wonders are woven into the fabric of the Alamo City. Walk through San Antonio’s rich past and explore its vibrant city streets dotted with must-see galleries and museums. Representing the largest collection of Spanish colonial missions in the United States, San Antonio’s combined total of five eighteenthcentury Spanish colonial missions— San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo), Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada—have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. THE

ALAMO

AND

THE

MISSIONS

Step inside any of the five historic missions, and travel back in time and into the lives of the early Spanish settlers who founded what would become the city of San Antonio. Begin your historic journey at the Alamo, first established as Mission San Antonio de Valero in 1718. Now known as one of the most pivotal battle sites in the country, the Alamo became a military outpost in 1793, cementing its iconic role as a central locale on Texas’ road to independence. Next, Mission Concepción looks much as it did two centuries ago when it was first mission espada built, being the best-preserved Spanish colonial structure in the United States. On the church’s exterior, some of the original geometric designs are still visible. Inside, the frescoes remain vibrant, showcasing the stunning artwork typical of the time.

Continue south to Mission San José, also known as the Queen of the Missions because it has the largest structure. Notice its striking rose window and façade, a lavish example of Spanish colonial ornamentation. You can also find a central visitor’s center here, as well as the departure point for free park ranger-guided tours. During the mid-1700s, Mission San Juan was known for its fertile farmlands and abundant crops, a prime example of a self- sustaining community. The mission also sustained fellow communities, providing goods to the surrounding regions as far south as Mexico. Finish up at Mission Espada, the southernmost mission. Take in the compound’s blacksmith shop, colonial-style irrigation system, and still-functioning kiln and spinning wheels for a glimpse into the Native American and Spanish settlers’ agrarian ways of life. Move among the missions using Mission Reach, which extends south of downtown to connect the River Walk to four of the five UNESCO status San Antonio Missions.

This hour-and-a-half tour dives into our city’s Black history, historic sites, and much more. Check with SAAACAM for dates and times.   MID-DAY

Head over to AMC River Center to watch THE ALAMO: THE PRICE OF FREEDOM, it is a stirring tribute to the 189 Texans, Tejanos and settlers who defended the besieged Alamo for 13 days against the Mexican Army of General Santa Anna. Next, you’ll want to keep history alive by stopping by the Alamo, the shrine of Texas liberty. The best way to experience this historical site is with a guided tour. DAY TWO  MORNING

Start your day off good and right with a coffee and a bite at Sip Brew Bar & Eatery where they’re serving you up espressos, baked goods, and sandwiches amid modern décor.  Stroll over to San Fernando Cathedral, the oldest, continuously functioning religious community in the State of Texas. While you’re immersed in history and beauty, remember that once night falls on Tuesdays, Fridays – Sundays, the facade of the cathedral transforms with lights, music, and visual arts depicting the historical discovery, settlement, and development of San Antonio, our wonderful Lone Star State, and the United States through The SAGA | San Antonio. MID-DAY

With over 300 years of history, there is no shortage of places to see and things to learn. Take a short drive to San José, a Spanish Colonial Mission and also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Next, drive to enjoy the sights and flavors of old Mexico at Historic Market Square, a favorite of locals and tourists for generations. Shop, eat and Explore over 100 locally owned businesses that provide a unique market place experience. EVENING

Afterward, freshen up and cruise the river on a Go Rio river taxi to the Pearl for dining and shopping.  Once there, head over to the Bottling Department, where you will find a modern Pearl Brewery food hall with diverse chef-driven stands, a wine bar & courtyard seating. After dinner, take in the many offerings and amenities at Pearl before enjoying some soothing sounds from an underground jazz bar called Jazz, TX.
