Paddling Our Waterways

Outdoor Fun

Outdoor enthusiasts and historians alike will discover a unique experience along the waterways of Sampson and Bladen Counties. Surround yourself with ancient bald cypress trees, many more than 1,000 years old along the Black River in Three Sisters Swamp. Nestled deep into the pristine waters is a tree called Methuselah, or BLK69 by its official name, which dates back to at least 364 AD and has been verified to be the oldest tree in eastern America. Kayaking and paddling are available along the Great Coharie, Little Coharie, and Six Runs Creeks, as well as the Black and South Rivers. The Friends of Sampson County Waterways is a great resource for information about group paddle trips that are conducted frequently throughout the year. You’ll find an active community of paddling enthusiasts in their Facebook Group. See the directory on Page 42 for details.
