Keeper

Port Aransas is known as the “Fishing Capital of Texas,” and for good reason. Hundreds of years of prime angling have taken place on these shores and surrounding fisheries. The city was even once named “Tarpon” for the abundance of trophy fish reeled in from these waters.

But the moniker can be applied to much more than just Marlin and Red Snapper. Many visitors are “fishing” for something else here: quality time spent with family, an escape from the rat race, or simply the serenity that comes from a dip in the ocean or a walk on the beach. Perhaps one of those applies to you.

In your search, you may come to discover that Port Aransas holds something even more rare, something sparkling that you will want to share with the ones you love. Maybe, just maybe, you will find a new tradition here—one that will carry on for generations.

If you do find that, you will be in good company. For decades, Port A has been the beach destination of choice for travelers who think of the island not as just a vacation destination, but as a safe harbor away from home. All you have to do is look back in Port Aransas Museum archives to see the record of lifetimes spent creating cherished memories in this little beach town. Whether your idea of tradition is a specific turquoise beach house you return to year after year, a visit with your kids to that one restaurant your parents always brought you to, a day of casting a line with your favorite fishing guide for a trophy, or even a goal of trying one new thing on each visit, Port Aransas is here, ready to embrace that tradition with you.

If you’re ready to catch a keeper, join in on this magazine’s journey through time and you’ll see that it’s not all just fish tales. Discover why Port Aransas is the catch of this lifetime…and several lifetimes after that.

Don’t worry guys, you can also find an itinerary you’ll love in Port A. If you stay at Palmilla Beach Resort & Golf Community, you’ll be in close proximity to the resort’s seaside golfing experience. Golfing at Palmilla Beach encompasses nine holes of regulation play, a driving range, a practice green, and “The Loop,” an extra three-hole short course. This particular home, the “Palmilla Sunset,” even has a mini golf putting green! Once all the guys are done enjoying the home’s expansive backyard games and grilling area, the group can venture out onto the deep seas for a fishing trip or into the bay on a Tiki Tour.

Whatever your life stage, Port Aransas is the dream vacation destination. From a cozy studio perfect for snuggling up as a couple to a three or four-story beach house with a private boardwalk and enough room for the extended family, there’s room to grow.

Young couples will love the romantic atmosphere of an island getaway. A property management company like Sway by AvantStay will help you find just the right fit, something like the beachfront condo “Summer Love.” The mural on the bedroom wall is painted with all the rosy colors of burgeoning love and the Port Aransas sky at sunrise. The balcony space is ideal for sharing a quiet morning soaking in the views and each other’s company. Fill your days with bike cruises along the beach and romantic al fresco dinners at unique Port A restaurants.

Once you add a couple little ones into your growing family, you’ll want to expand your island stay accordingly. Opt for a beach house like A Southern Jade, available for rent through Port A Escapes This home has everything a young family would want, including a spacious outdoor area underneath the stilted house with a pool, yard games, and a tiki bar for the parents!

Places To Stay

Family vacations are better with friends! More than likely, once you share with other growing families how great and family-friendly Port Aransas is, they’ll want to join you on your next foray into island life! Big beach houses are easy to find, made even easier by property management companies. New Wave Vacation Rentals, for example, rents out the “Shell Yeah Beach House.” Not only does the house have great views and a short walk to the beach, but it also boasts five bedrooms and can sleep up to 16 people! The first floor of the home is a giant game room with a pool table, a built-in fort nook for the littles, a poker table, and tiki mask bar stools. You, your kids, your friends, and your friends’ kids will all be saying “Shell yeah!” for your whole stay.

During your vacation with family and friends, you might be reminded of just how great it is to spend quality time with the adults in your life. Make time to reconnect with the ones who make up your village. On a kids-free vacation, it’s easy to slip right into island time! Life in Paradise has plenty of rental options suited for this, like Poco Loco, a three-bedroom condo located in The Commons complex.

There’s a reason “Traditions anchor here” is a saying in Port Aransas, and it’s because the most common visitor story is multi-generational. Parents raise their kids on Port Aransas summers, those kids grow up to bring their kids back to experience the nostalgia, and the magic continues. This makes Port Aransas uniquely positioned as a hotspot for family reunions! Generations can relax together or apart in homes across a vacation community like Cinnamon Shore, then come together in one of the community’s large houses, like “Our Seabreeze Place.” There’s plenty of space and onsite amenities for enjoying family meals, playing games, and making memories.

You’ve paid your dues and now you get to slip into a relaxing retirement. Hopefully, your retired Port A vacations can be long, stress-free enjoyments of all that you have accomplished. One of the penthouses at Aransas Princess Condominiums will give you the view and the luxury you’ve worked for your whole life! Here, you can enjoy time with your significant other, or invite a couple of friends to enjoy the retired island life in style!

Fly Me To Port A

Flying right onto your favorite island isn’t your typical, everyday experience. But then again, there’s very little in Port A that doesn’t have that sparkling singularity of vacation magic to it. Didn’t even know Port Aransas has its own airport? You’re not alone!

Mustang Beach Airport, identified as KRAS, has a 3,500 foot lighted runway and taxi-way that can accommodate single-engine planes, twin-engine planes, and small turbos or jets. Aviators love it for the proximity to the beach (no more long drive or ferry wait)…not to mention that overnight airplane parking is incredibly affordable. From the air, you can appreciate Mustang Island for its position as a barrier island surrounded by the vastness of the Gulf of Mexico. Watch ships move through the channel, witness the north and south jetties work from above, experience the ebb and flow of the beach tides, and appreciate the breadth of Mustang and San José Islands running alongside each other.

If you’re not a pilot, you can still get a taste of the high life by booking a private flight out of the Mustang Beach Airport. Mustang Island Air will take you up on a ride on a vintage World War II-era biplane. Take a different tack with Aero Copters, a premier helicopter tour company, and see Port Aransas like never before. These services also offer custom trips to fit your taste, so don’t hesitate to take the wheel…or rather, yoke. If you’re a pilot, you know that there’s very little that can compare to the views you get from the cockpit. In Port Aransas, that view is magnified tenfold as you leave. The departing pattern for Mustang Beach Airport takes you right over the beach, so you can capture one last glimpse to savor on your way home. The perfect vacation is just a short flight away…catch you on the fly!

CURRENTS

If Port Aransas is the “catch” of a lifetime, then the island’s annual festivals and events are the shining trophy fish. Port Aransas boasts beautiful beaches and mild weather year-round, but the vibrant festival scene puts the cherry on top of your beach vacation!

So go where the currents take you next time… you might just arrive at a current event that will manifest into a time-honored tradition.

Whooping Crane Festival

Whether you’re a serious birder or just love getting outdoors, the Whooping Crane Festival at the end of February is worth a visit. Master naturalists accompany boats and buses to go wildlife spotting, where you can catch a glimpse of the elusive Whooping Cranes that call this area home for the winter. Field experts also host photography workshops and educational lectures so you can gain a whole new appreciation for the island’s wildlife scene.

Texas SandFest

Want to be inspired, entertained, and starstruck, all at the same time…and all with your feet in the sand of the Port Aransas beach? Mark your April calendar for Texas SandFest, the largest native sand sculpting competition in the country. Towering sand masterpieces are just the tip of the sand-berg at this festival, which also has a packed music lineup and activities for all ages.

Sprinkled in between these highlights, you’ll find everything from live music festivals to holiday drone shows and golf cart parades. All of which goes to say, there’s never a bad day to be in Port A!

Beachtober

Once fall hits, you don’t need to wait for a particular event to schedule your trip…the entire month of October has an action-packed roster Port A likes to call “Beachtober.” Events like Flynn’s Beach Run, the Wooden Boat Festival, an abundance of live music, and more complement the ideal warm breezes and uncrowded beaches you’ll find in the autumn season.

If you’re still learning, though, you might need some context for the slang that gets thrown around on the beach. Here’s a quick beginner’s guide of ten terms you’ll want to know when you start surfing in

Ready to drop into the world of surfing?

Texas Surf Camps makes it easy to learn in Port Aransas. They offer private lessons, group lessons, and even week-long summer camps for kids! Once you’ve learned, all you’ll need to do on a return trip is rent a board from BoardHouse or Island Surf Rentals.

Cutback

A typical surfing move where you carve up to the top of the lip, then sharply turn to ride the wave back down.

Goofy footed

When someone surfs with their right foot forward. Goofy-footed surfers will only face the wave when it breaks on their left. The alternative is conventional or regular-footed surfing, with the left foot forward.

Grommet/Grom

A young surfer, used for any gender. Port A locals are raising up groms!

Kook

Negative term associated with surfing “wannabes.” Don’t be a kook…learn the ropes with Texas Surf Camps.

Lineup

The area of the water past the wave break where surfers paddle to wait for the perfect set.

Lip

The tip of a wave, right before it breaks.

Longboard vs. shortboard

The most common surfboard types. Longboards are generally better for learning and leisure; shortboards are great for speed and doing tricks.

Pop up

The motion a surfer makes to go from lying on their board to standing on it.

Stoked

Extremely enthusiastic or excited; pumped up!

Thrashed

When a surfer wipes out on a wave and gets knocked around underwater, they’re being thrashed. It happens to the best of us!

Things To Do

Boats are a part of life on an island. From sportfishing boats and sailboats to sunset cruisers and shrimp trawlers, captains and their crews float the waters around Port Aransas. Like the island’s beach houses, many vessels have nautical names that make them unique, clever nods to their purpose or the Port A way of life.

The Scarlet Lady is a cruising vessel named for the famous mythical mermaids and sirens. Like the beautiful and mysterious mermaid, dolphins are beautiful creatures, and visitors aboard the Scarlet Lady can spot them and other beautiful Port A natives.

The sportfishing crowd takes boat naming to a whole new level. The sleek, beautiful offshore vessels that

The Mustang boat pays homage to the beautiful island Port Aransas sits on, Mustang Island. With a name like that, it makes sense that the Mustang is big on ecotourism, offering educational dolphin watches and nature tours that show off the beauty of this place.

The 76-foot fishing charter boats at Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf are twins titled “Scat Cat” and “Wharf Cat.” The “cat” in these names is a play on the boats’ catamaran hulls. These boats are one of the most stable offshore fishing experiences you can find, whether snapper fishing in the summer or taking a long-haul tuna trip in the winter.

The Red Dragon’s whimsical name is fitting for both the ship’s color and for the seadogs who run it! Pirate cruises aboard the Red Dragon check off all the boxes of a fantasy world experience: cannon fire, sword fighting, and plenty of pirate lingo!

For example, “Cutter Bill” is named after a rodeo cutting horse, but with a twist for target billfish, and “Sashimi” owners are probably looking forward to the yummy dining possibilities of their catches!

SAND! ON YOUR MARK… GET SET…

The atmosphere at The Gaff Bar is raucous on this early Saturday evening. Some patrons are sipping on ice cold beer while condensation forms rings on the picnic tables where they sit. Others are enjoying one of the bar’s famous “Gaffer” pizzas. A local musician strums a guitar on the stage. All are soaking in the warm Port Aransas sun, reveling in the island life, and excitedly anticipating the events to come. This vibe is homegrown. It’s belt sander race day. The Gaff is unique enough on its own as a pirate-themed bar in the

heart of Port Aransas, just tenths of a mile from the beach, but add in the bimonthly belt sander races and the experience is truly unmatched. What exactly are belt sander races?

The Gaff, which proudly proclaims itself “the birthplace of Texas belt sander racing,” is the perfect place to learn. A wooden track, divided into two lanes, serves as the course. The belt sander “racers” are colorfully decorated, named, and enhanced by their makers for optimum speed. From there, it’s exactly what it sounds like—the belt sanders are let loose on

the track and the winner is whichever reaches the end of the track first. Competition is good-hearted, but fierce.

Every second and fourth Saturday of the month, this crowd gathers in the outside area of The Gaff. Though the time of the races changes with the season, the jovial nature of the crowd is consistent. The belt sander races are a competition, but they’re also a celebration of everything that makes Port Aransas feel like home, regardless of your postal code.

Fish Tales

Fishing

You’ve heard of exaggerated fish tales, but it’s no fish tale how great the fishing is in Port Aransas. Port Aransas is the Fishing Capital of Texas, well known for its start as a fishing town where anglers reeled in Tarpon in abundance. The island’s large, clean fisheries continue to be ideal for fishing tournaments.

Deep Sea Roundup, the oldest fishing tournament on the Texas coast, started here nearly 90 years ago as the Tarpon Rodeo. Though the fishing scene has developed over the years, the thrill of the catch never stales.

LEARN THE ART OF PORT A FISHING Fishing

So, you’ve heard that Port Aransas is the Fishing Capital of Texas and you want a piece of the action. You’ve come to the right place, but how do you get started? Here’s a quick guide to fishing for the first time in Port Aransas, because life is better with a fishing pole in your hand.

1. MAKE IT O-FISH-AL

Before you can cast your first line, you’ll need a Texas fishing license. Texas Parks & Wildlife has a variety of licenses available depending on where and what you’re fishing. For Port Aransas, you’ll want a saltwater fishing license, which can be purchased for one-day use or for the full season. Swing by Family Center IGA, Deep Sea Headquarters, Ace Hardware, Island Tackle, a Stripes store, or The Texan to purchase your license. Don’t forget to download the Texas Outdoor Annual app for easy, onthe-go access to regulations and fishing information!

2. STUFF YOUR GILLS

It’s time to gear up! Premium rod and reel combos are available for purchase at Island Tackle, Deep Sea Headquarters, Port A Outfitters, or Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf. While you’re picking your pole, talk to the experts at hand to determine which fishing line, bait, and tackle is right for you. If you’re not ready to commit to a certain rod and reel, no worries! You can rent a combo from Island Tackle. Have your own pole that isn’t working quite right? They also offer rod and reel repair services! Looking specifically for live bait? Stock up at Deep Sea Headquarters or Port A Outfitters

3. TO BAY OR NOT TO BAY …that is the question of the day! What type of fishing do you want to do? In Port Aransas, the myriad of options means this isn’t always an easy question. Go offshore for big trophy catches, stay in the bay for a shorter experience, try a nighttime flounder gigging excursion with Walker’s Guide Services or Surrender at Sunrise, or soar with Captain Kenjo on a fly-fishing trip.

4. AIDING AND A-BAIT-ING

A helping hand goes a long way in the fishing game. Once you’re suited up and have chosen how you want to fish, you’re ready to hire a guide. Going out with a fishing guide is the absolute best way to learn to fish in Port Aransas. Woody’s Fishing Adventures will pair you up with a guide, or you can search for your own by scanning the QR code

5. CAST AWAY YOUR CARES

Now that you’re out on the water, you can officially set that email message to “gone fishing.” Your fishing guide will show you the methods and the locations for success. Enjoy yourself and reel ‘em in!

6. DIP YOUR SUCCESS IN TARTAR SAUCE

FLYNN TIP:

Don’t forget to recycle your fishing line when you’re done! Fishing line recycle stations can be found at all piers, the jetties, and the public marina.

You’ve done the heavy lifting, now let local restaurants step in to cook your catch for the full-circle experience! Whether you order your fish fried, blackened and squeezed with lemon, or simmered in garlic butter, it will be the freshest fish dish you’ve ever eaten. Already have dinner reservations? Don’t fret—Port Aransas Business Center will ice and box up your fish so you can enjoy your fish back at home.

Now that you’ve done it once, you’ll want to go fishing in Port Aransas again…and again…and again…and—

TOURNAMENT INTERVIEWS WEIGH IN

Like most other fishing tournaments that take place in Port Aransas, the Texas Women Anglers Tournament weigh-in is open to the public for all to enjoy. Unlike other fishing tournaments, though, the Texas Women Anglers Tournament weigh-in has a costume theme…and a mission. Shana Gann, one of the tournament directors along with Chris Fox, “weighed in” on why this tournament is so important.

1. Can you talk about the origin of the Texas Women Anglers Tournament?

“The tournament was started in 1984 by Cecelia Fox and Earlyn Tompkins. After a long summer of watching their husbands fish tournaments, they decided there should be a tournament for the women. They ran the tournament for several years, and after a brief hiatus, Sharon Miller revived it in the 90s and continued the tradition for several more years. When Sharon decided to step away from the tournament in 2010, Chris Fox took over and still runs it today.”

2. How did the tradition of decorating the boats come about?

“During Sharon’s era of running the tournament, she began the tradition of giving the tournament a theme each year and encouraged boats to come to the weigh-in dressed in costumes to match…Some of the tournament themes have been Día de los Muertos, USA, Under the Sea, Disco Cowgirl, and most recently, Beverly Hills Hotel. When we made this change, we also encouraged boats to come up with their own theme and started giving awards for most original theme, best costumes, crowd favorite, and best decorated boat.”

3. What is your personal favorite thing about the tournament?

“My favorite thing about the tournament is how much fun it is for everyone! We make it our mission to keep the fun alive from the moment you walk in the door with decorations and music all the way to the costume-filled weigh-in and the festive awards ceremony. Tournaments can be serious business these days with a lot of money on the line, but ultimately, if you’re not having fun, you’re missing the point! I’m also just so proud of the women who put it on. Aside from Chris, the tournament is made possible by a committee of nine women, who all take time away from their jobs and families to put on a fun weekend of fishing and raise money for women's causes. [The committee members are] myself, Ashley Harris, Jade Gueldner, Maggie Evans, Nona Goss, Sam Kypke, Marilee Henson, Robin Krenek, and Sarah Drummond.”

4. Do you have a favorite Texas Women Anglers Tournament story you can share?

“This story predates my involvement in the tournament but remains my favorite to hear. Somewhere around 2004, the tournament theme of the year was ‘Texas.’ The owner of the ‘Let It Ride,’ Gary Edwards, arrived at the weigh-in donning a

pair of chaps that were a bit revealing from behind. As they pulled into the dock, Pete Fox tossed the fish bag to the dock hands, casually telling them to check out their catch. Expecting a big fish, the dock workers opened the bag—and got the shock of their lives. Inside wasn’t a fish, but a rattlesnake. Even though it was dead, the sight of it was enough to hear a few expletives!”

5. Texas Women Anglers Tournament supports The Purple Door, in addition to other local nonprofits and initiatives. Can you tell the reader about what they do in the community?

“The Purple Door is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Corpus Christi, Texas. A Guide to Fishing Gear Fishing

When you walk into Island Tackle in Port Aransas, you’ll be confronted with rows of shiny hooks and walls of neon lures, plus fishing poles you can rent. The variety is top-notch, but it might be a bit overwhelming if you’re new to the fishing game. Lucky for you, inside the store you will also find Randall and Carolyn Harris and their sweet black lab, Quinn. The Harrises own Island Tackle and command the expertise to help anglers of all abilities have a great experience fishing in Port Aransas. Here are Randall’s responses to ten questions about how to best equip yourself to maximize your catch!

What are three to five things you think every angler should have in their tackle box?

“Aside from basic leaders/hooks/ weights/bait knife/bait towel, a good assortment of artificial lures: topwater, spoons, hard baits, and soft plastics. A hookout tool is good to have; it helps dehook fish quickly. A fish grip can be handy to hold fish while removing hooks and taking pictures. A quality line clipper is nice, especially when

using braided line. The newest tool we use a lot is Bait Elastic. Don’t forget your license!”

What are some things people should consider or look out for when purchasing a rod and reel?

“I think choosing a rod and reel for the type of fishing you want do is most important. Fishing around a 7’ light tackle combo (¼– ¾ ounce or so) is great for most inshore artificial and

live bait. A little heavier 7’, 8’, or 9’ combo is preferred for jetty and pier fishing, something that can handle two to four ounces. For beach fishing, a 10’ to 12’ combo rated up to six ounces helps cast heavy surf weights a long distance, although any of the above combos can be actively fished in the surf.”

Should a rod and reel be purchased separately or together in a combo?

“Buying a premade combo is a great way to get started and sometimes you get a great deal on the rod. However, as a person gets more serious about fishing, you will find that buying your rod and reel separately is better. The reason is that you can customize your combo to what and how you intend to fish. It can make a big difference.”

Let’s talk bait. When should you use live bait versus an artificial lure?

“In general, live bait or some type of cut bait works everywhere. But at places like the jetty, artificial baits are best. It is easier to control the

depth and not hang in the rocks. In my experience, artificials are also key when you need to cover a lot of water, like wade fishing or drifting flats.”

Can you walk the reader through, generally, some of the major types of lures out there?

“It is hard to list them all. The main inshore contenders are topwaters, spoons, and soft plastics. Topwater is my favorite; [it’s] something to stare at and nothing beats a blowup on topwater. Spoons might be the most versatile. [There is] no wrong way to retrieve, fast or slow, jigging, or dragging through the sand. Soft plastics are also versatile, lots of choices and fishing techniques.”

How should you rig up your bait for best chances at catching a fish when surf fishing? What about jetty fishing?

“For fishing the surf, Fishbites and shrimp on a pompano rig might be the most universal. Wrapping the two with a little bait elastic will keep the shrimp on during the cast. I like using a bobber stop rig on the jetty when fishing with bait. This allows you to fish an indefinite, easily adjustable depth.”

The world of fishing line… what should people look out for and how can they know the differences?

“That’s a good one, and often discussed at Island Tackle. Monofilament can be a good choice around rocks or pylons with sharp barnacles. Braid will help increase casting distance but doesn’t have the stretch or abrasion resistance of mono. It’s a good idea to tie a couple feet of mono to braid when fishing artificials in saltwater.”

What is the item people usually forget about when they’re picking out their fishing gear?

“I’d say a measuring device.”

What should people know about Island Tackle that they may not?

“We don’t sell live bait. Ha! A little inside joke. We are a family-run business that strives to not only give great customer service but also reasonable prices.”

Fishing

What is your favorite thing to do with your fish after you’ve caught your limit for the day?

“We might keep a couple for a fresh fish dinner, but for the most part we get a picture and release them. When we do keep them, we enjoy the fish various ways, but always with friends and family.”

Some beachgoers just want to grab a towel on their way out the door, hop in a golf cart, and hit the sand.

If this is you, you probably like to pick up a fresh beach towel from a local shop like The Islander so you can have plenty of space to stretch out with a good book.

Or maybe you bring along a volleyball for a pickup game. Regardless, this type of beachgoer believes that less is more when it comes to a beach day.

For others, though, really settling in on the sand requires a bit more than just a towel. If you want to maintain the minimum level of effort, but with more comfort for the entire family, you’ll want to reach out to 361 Blue or Port A Local Co These companies offer beach set-ups that include chairs, umbrellas, tables, and game options. All you do is show up and enjoy your quality time!

Then there are those beachgoers whose motto is “go big or go back to the beach house.” If you fall in this camp, you probably have Rollin’ Tide Boil Co. or Party Tent Rentals #1 on speed dial, and you know how to throw a party!

Rollin’ Tide Boil Co. can help you celebrate any occasion (or just because) with a bonfire and boil setup—Adirondack chairs and s’mores included.

If you need something even larger, Party Tent Rentals #1 sets up octagonal tension tents right on the sand for your family reunion or even a wedding reception!

So, what level do you prefer? Will you go for just a towel and a beach game, or do you want the whole shebang?

Outside Interests

Take a moment. Close your eyes and transport your mind to Port Aransas. Picture the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle that bobs along the south jetty. Hear the shells clink together in your palms as you collect them in the early morning hours. Soar with the Roseate Spoonbill outlined pink against the bright blue sky. Feel the natural world around you.

Now, slowly, swim your way back and open your eyes, but hold on to that feeling. The natural beauty of Port Aransas is a serenity that sticks.

To experience the natural beauty, scan the QR code!

Nature

The beach is loaded with treasures hidden just along the waterline. Looking for seashells is a favorite pastime in Port Aransas and on neighboring San José Island, which is accessible via a short boat ride. You may fill your camera with the curiosities you come across, but do you know what you’re collecting?

Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the more exciting shells that can be found in Port Aransas, so you can really “shell-ebrate” your finds! As a reminder, best practice for sea-shelling is to snap a photo without removing your find from the beach. Shells are a part of the natural ecosystem, after all, and integral to the delicate system that makes Port Aransas so wonderful!

Lightning Whelk

It’s only right that you can find the official state shell of Texas on Texas’ favorite beach. The Lightning Whelk shell is actually a sea snail that can live for 10–15 years!

Moon Snails

The swirled Moon Snails are sometimes known as “Necklace Shells.” They hunt by boring holes in other small bivalve shells that make those shells easy to string on a necklace.

Starfish

A starfish sighting is always exciting, but if you see a starfish that has recently surfaced, do it a favor and return it to the warm Gulf waters, where it can continue to swim along.

Angel Wings

The aptly named Angel Wings are a burrowing mollusk, and one of several mollusk species that cause the tiny “holes” that dot the Port A beach.

Shark Eye

The beautifully-swirled Shark Eye is a mollusk known for its proclivity to eat other Shark Eyes!

Shark Teeth

Shark teeth in Port Aransas can most commonly be found between Horace Caldwell Pier and the south jetties at low tide.

Sand Dollars

Did you know Sand Dollars are a type of sea urchin? If you find a Sand Dollar that is more brown or dark red than white, it’s probably still alive and you should gently place it back in the water.

Beachcombing tip:

Go shelling at low tide during a full moon, when the maximum amount of sand will be exposed above water.

INSPIRED BY THE ISLAND

Artists are naturally, pun intended, drawn to Port Aransas. Greta Watkins is one of those artists. Her work can be found at the Port Aransas Art Center, and Greta herself can often be found there as well, teaching art classes to locals and visitors.

Of this painting, Greta says, “on one of our visits to Mustang Island State Park a couple of years ago, the sunflowers were blooming profusely on the dunes along the walkway to the beach. The happy sunflowers, gently swaying in the breeze, with the soothing sounds of the ocean waves, seagulls overhead, a big beautiful blue sky—all made for a perfect afternoon at the beach.”

About Greta Watkins: As a way of finding a sense of place and belonging after moving to the area three years ago, Greta has been finding lots of inspiration in her new environment, watching the everchanging clouds and the constantly changing colors and mood of the water, and learning about the seasons of local and migrating birds, butterflies, and plants.

In many of her paintings, Greta is interested in the mark-making of painting and drawing. Allowing traces of the process, the decisions she’s made along the way, to show in the finished piece is important to her.

As long as Greta can remember, she’s always been involved with some form of art and creative process. As an adult, she worked for several years in clay, focusing on hand-built porcelain. Then she turned to a medium with more immediate results, handmade paper—exploring texture, pattern, light and shadow, for several years.

At 40, Greta decided to go back to school to finally finish a long-postponed art degree. Drawing and painting classes gave Greta a new direction and she hasn’t looked back!

Coastal Cryptids

Everyone knows of Sasquatch and the Loch Ness monster, those mysterious creatures that evade explanation. But Port Aransas actually has its own set of “cryptids,” a grouping of almost-can’t-believe-it critters that carve out a home on this salty little island. They don’t quite belong here, but that’s just how Port A likes it.

Flamingo: Perhaps one of the most surprising additions to the Port Aransas Nature Preserve in the last year or so has been a flamingo! Typically found in the Caribbean regions, this particular flamingo has decided to turn Port Aransas into “Pink” Aransas and has gotten quite comfortable making friends with the menagerie of other bird species in the preserve.

Roseate Spoonbill: The official bird of Port Aransas often gets confused for a flamingo to those not in the know. Roseate Spoonbills share the same bright pink hue, but are actually wading birds with cherry red eyes.

David Sikes

Manatee: It’s not often, but every once in a while, a sea cow will show up in Port A’s backyard. Maybe they’re lost, or maybe they’re just looking for a vacation on the best beach in Texas. Like a true cryptid, photos are rare… believe the islanders if you will!

Blue Button: The “porpita porpita,” as the Blue Button Jellyfish is formally named, is tiny and adorable, but be careful…this free-floating creature can irritate sensitive skin or pets.

Whooping Crane: In the 1940s, there were only 15 of the majestic Whooping Cranes left in the world. Today, thanks to intense conservation efforts, several hundred Whooping Cranes can be seen wintering in the Port Aransas area. Port Aransas celebrates the cranes, which are one of the rarest birds on the continent, every February at the Whooping Crane Festival

Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle: Spot what you think is a baby sea turtle bobbing along the jetties? It’s probably a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, the smallest and most endangered sea turtle in the world. Though rare globally, these beauties are easy to find in Port Aransas.

A NEW GENERATION

Humans aren’t the only ones for whom Port Aransas is a family tradition. Sea turtles also call the island home, and they ensure that future generations will continue to do so by making Port A their annual nesting ground!

Turtle nesting season in Port Aransas runs from early April to mid-July. During this time, biologists and volunteers patrol the beach to help ensure the survival of nesting sea turtles and eggs. Port Aransas commonly sees Green, Loggerhead, and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, the most endangered sea turtle species in the world. While most sea turtles nest at night, Kemp’s Ridleys nest during the day, making their egg clutches all the more vulnerable to predators… and all the more crucial for extra attention and care.

What should you do if you spot a nesting sea turtle during your visit? Count yourself lucky and dial up 1-866-TURTLE5! This will alert local wildlife services at the Amos Rehabilitation Keep (ARK). While you await the ARK’s arrival, minimize light exposure, keep a safe distance away, and make sure that drivers on the beach are aware the turtle is on the move. Then, let the professionals take

over. Even if there’s no turtle present, it’s possible you could come across a nest after she’s laid her clutch. If you spot two-foot wide tracks that look like check marks with a drag mark in the middle, then you’ve spotted turtle tracks, which may mean a nest nearby. In this case, follow the same steps above!

If you’d like a glimpse of the sea turtles in their natural state, even outside of nesting season, check along the waterline at Roberts Point Park or the south jetties. Sea turtles can commonly be seen bobbing along near the rocks! You’ll also want to keep an eye out for sea turtle releases, where the ARK returns healed sea turtles to their underwater home so they can carry on for the next generation of Port A’s favorite green residents.

SUR-PIES! SUR-PIES!

Life is sweet in Port Aransas, and nobody knows that better than local bakeries and restaurants. While fresh Gulf seafood draws foodies to the island, desserts put the cherry on top of a Port A vacation. And what screams American summer vacation more than a slice of your favorite pie?

Raise your forks, because Port Aransas is serving up a slice of paradise on every plate.

Snake Farm Pie Co. is the cottage bakery of your dreams. Pictured here are traditional cherry, sopapilla, and small coconut cream pies. Grumbles Seafood Co.’s Lydiann cocktail is named after the Lydia Ann lighthouse, a Port Aransas icon. The Lydiann is made with Deep Eddy lemon vodka, Cointreau liqueur, lime and pomegranate juice, and simple syrup.

TASTE OF THE COAST

When you think of beach drinks, you probably think of the classics–piña coladas served in pineapples and drink umbrellas poking out of a mai tai. Don’t be mistaken, Port Aransas has all the classics, but local mixologists have also shaken up a list of refreshing craft cocktails that feel more attached to the Texas coast.

A signature top shelf margarita with crisp, hand–muddled cucumber and jalapeno slices and a Grand Marnier floater is what you’ll get from the Stingray Shuffle at Stingrays Taphouse and Grill!

Vida Caña Rum’s slogan, “Spirit of Slow,” symbolizes the more relaxed way of living that can be found in Port A. Choose from light blends ideal for mixing to darker, aged rums perfect for sipping. For every bottle sold, $1 is donated to environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation organizations, including Amos Rehabilitation Keep in Port Aransas.

Lelo’s Island Bar’s iconic Mermaid Water is sized for two and served in a conch–shaped glass–a shell native to the Gulf of Mexico!

The Palm Social Club mixes the Texas–made Vette vodka, fresh muddled raspberries and peaches, a squeeze of lime, and a splash of simple syrup for the juicy Palm Bellini Martini.

Named after Port A’s favorite mode of transportation, the Dirty Golf Cart from Lelo’s Island Bar is made with Ole Smoky Salted Watermelon whiskey, ginger ale, and fresh lime.

Relax with the High Tide from BlueWater Cowboy, a refreshing Coconut Margarita as blue as the ocean in summer! Yum!
