Quechua native community of Wayku

This is the only Quechua ethnic group in the Peruvian Amazon and its people still maintain their ancestral customs, language, and typical dresses. They have handicraft stores in their houses, being this one of the highlights, as well as the picturesque square with sculptures representing scenes of the QuechuaLamistas’ customs.

Among the typical dishes of the region are: Juanes de arroz: hen meat with rice and spices, wrapped in banana leaves. Inchicapi: hen soup with peanuts, cilantro, and cassava. Avispa juane: chopped pork mixed with garlic and spices bound with flour and egg; then it is boiled and wrapped in achira leaves like a tamale. Tacacho con cecina: roasted or fried banana, mashed with butter and dried meat. Chunchulijuane: mashed cassava, cilantro and hen giblets, wrapped in banana leaves. Chontajuane: mashed chonta, palm, and paiche (fish), wrapped in banana leaves. Sarajuane: mashed corn and peanuts with pork meat, wrapped in banana leaves. Traditional drinks: Masato: drink made of boiled and mashed cassava then fermented with sweet potato or sugar. Chuchuhuasi: aguardiente made from a bitter and astringent root; it is very famous throughout eastern Peru.
