QUICK FACTS

PERDIDO KEY

Vital Statistics

Our Name Perdido Key’s literal translation means “Lost Key,” so named by the early Spanish who discovered it in 1693. Until then, the Key was the well-kept secret of Gulf Coast Native Americans – Perdido Key’s first inhabitants. Located on a narrow strip of snow white beaches and crystal blue waters, Perdido Key is located in the Northwest Panhandle of Florida, between Pensacola, Florida and Orange Beach, Alabama. No more than a few hundred yards wide in most places, Perdido Key stretches some 16 miles, with almost 60 percent of it located in federal or state parks – making it one of the last remaining unblemished stretches of wilderness in the Florida Panhandle.

Traveling With Pets

Traveling with your favorite canine or feline friend? In most Escambia County beaches dogs are not allowed, however there are numerous places in the Perdido Key area which welcomes your furry friends. Our Commissioner

W

e are blessed to live in a time of prosperity like history has never known. Our technology and industry have created a world of “solutions on demand”; our needs and wants can be met almost before we even know we have them. However, with this prosperity comes the hectic American lifestyle and that which our souls crave the most - peace, serenity, and balance - can become more elusive. These things will never be created on a 3D Printer, delivered by drone from Amazon, or saved to DVR for whenever we have time for them. Lucky for you, you have discovered Perdido Key. Here on the Key, we have those things in abundance. While many tourism destinations can leave you more exhausted than when you arrived,

Stay in touch

Perdido Key is where you can get your soul back. When you visit our island, you become a part of our environment and our culture. On Perdido Key, you are not a tourist. You are a visitor, a guest, and for a short time, we are honored to call you “neighbor”.

Perdido Key offers a sanctuary to people from all walks of life. On this island, it really doesn’t matter where you came from, why you are here, or how you got here. The minute you set foot on our island you started weaving your own threads into the tapestry of the island.

We are one of the last beaches in Florida where the pressures of development have not ruined the natural beach. Take some time while you are here to walk the Gulf Islands National Seashore and our Florida State Parks on the Key and at Big Lagoon. Here you will experience the Florida coast in much the same way as Juan Tristan de Luna did when he set foot on our shores nearly 500 years ago.

As a community, we thank you for calling our home yours, whether it be for a day, a week, or a lifetime. It is our honor to have you walk among our dunes…and become a part of our rich tapestry.

These sands are the canvas on which nearly a millennium of human history has been drawn. The influence of the French and Spanish, English and Native American, Yankees and Rebels are all the rich colors and textures that make up the beauty of Perdido Key.

WHITE SAND Help Florida Preserve and Protect its Beaches.

By Frederique Beroset | Dune Doctors

FLORIDA’S COMMUNITIES ALONG THE GULF COAST LOVE THEIR SUGARY WHITE BEACHES THAT RANK AMONG THE TOP IN THE WORLD.

T

ourists love the beaches, too, with more than 40 million tourists visiting the state every year. While Florida residents welcome the tourists who travel here throughout the year, they also want to preserve and protect the unique beauty of its coastline. After all, about 14 million or roughly 70 percent of the state’s population lives within 10 miles of the coast. Everyone should be good stewards of this one-of-a-kind environment. Beyond their natural beauty, the beach, dunes and wetlands along the coastline provide the first line of defense from storms, especially during the long hurricane season from June 1 to Nov. 30 for homeowners and businesses. This area is still bouncing back from Hurricane Ivan that slammed into the Gulf Coast, on Sept. 16, 2004.

seasons, sand will travel back and forth, East, West, North and South. It can be stopped with sand fences and trapped by plants. Sand fence placement and coastal vegetation installation are precisely engineered in specific areas. Both beach renourishment and the building of dunes have helped the once flattened beaches to recover. It takes a long time to rebuild the dunes and a very short time to make significant damage. To help ensure the fragile nature of the beach for generations to enjoy. Please follow a few simple rules residents and visitors alike can follow:

A storm has the momentum to relocate massive quantities of sand in a very short period of time. After a storm, over many

1. Use dune walkovers and designated beach access points to cross over the dunes. Native dune vegetation can withstand harsh beach conditions but it cannot withstand being trampled by footsteps, pets or vehicles. Once a foot path is regularly used it lowers the crest of the dune. This created trough becomes a likely place for a blowout during a storm. 2. When you decide to hit the beach leave only your footprints behind.

Left on the beach garbage negatively impacts the beach ecosystem and endangers wildlife. Beach mice, coach-whip snakes, ghost crabs, nesting sea turtles, least terns, piping and snowy plovers and monarch butterflies and other dune inhabitants depend on you to keep them safe. 3. Sea oats collect wind blown sand. The extensive root system of this critical plant and other native vegetation creates a deep web that helps hold sand dunes together. Picking sea oats is illegal in Florida and will result in a fine. Do not pick sea oats, not even their seeds. 4. Some areas are occasionally marked. When there are signs that show that a specific area is protected, may it be for bird nesting, a turtle has laid her eggs, or a protective planting has been implemented, please be watchful and stay out of that designated area. So enjoy yourself at the beach! And help keep it pristine so others who follow you can enjoy it, too!

The Perdido Key Beach Mouse listed as an endangered species since 1985 calls our island home. It is described as a large-eared nocturnal herbivore which feeds basically on the seeds of the sea oats and beach grasses which are abundant in the vicinity.

Around 62 percent of Perdido Key is comprised of protected land as part of the Gulf Islands

Did you know that the sugarywhite beaches found on Perdido Key are made out of fine quartz that after some time has disintegrated from granite in the Appalachian Mountains?

The sand deposits are carried by rivers and creeks to our shore. Probably due to the fineness of the quartz, the sand makes an eminent squeak as you slide your bare feet through it – a sound both children and adult love and enjoy.

erdido Key is 247 acres of land, a barrier which stretches 16 miles on the Gulf of Mexico which provide habitats for coastal animals.

The dunes are one of the highlights of this barrier islands. It is a sand formation created by winds, which are abundant on the Key. Because of its pristine beach with white sand and clear turquoise water, our narrow barrier island has been rated by Conde Naste Traveler as one of the top five best island beaches. Perdido Key or also called ‘the Key’ by locals, is a natural paradise where you will find untouched and pristine beaches, habitats like marshes and wetlands, and a variety of ocean and wildlife.

The local people call the terrain just off the island as the mainland. The mainland only west of the island is still considered as part of the Key and is home of the Big Lagoon State Park as well as the Innerarity Point and Innerarity Island. Innerarity Point has numerous retail and dining locations while the Innerarity Island on the other hand is a small, private residential community.

The climate of Northwest Florida is semi-tropical with hot summer and warm winters. During the summer, the weather is just right for sunbathing and a cool dip in the water. While the fall and winter provide a perfect climate for outdoor activities in the Key’s great outdoors. So, what are you waiting for? Come and get lost in Perdido Key.

The Gulf of Mexico is to the South and the Intracoastal waterway, also known as Ole’ River to the north, borders this natural barrier island. Orange Beach & Gulf Shores are to the west with Pensacola to the east. The Key’s location is also close to lagoons and coves; which offer an incredible area for cruising, snorkelling, fishing and swimming.

THE KEY IS HOME

looking around or past tall condos. It looks different but the feeling is the same. As soon as I top the bridge and look over to my left at the boats on the canal, the stress of day to day life beings to leave me.

I grew up with the Theo Barrs Bridge in my backyard. There were only five families with kids who lived on the key in the late seventies and eighties. Our days were spent riding bicycles to the beach every day after school with a stop in at the Curiosity shop for a soda and a candy bar. I met the love of my life on a school bus at the corner of Don Carlos Drive and Siguenza Drive in 1982. Today, he and I live a few miles from the key and make a point to get our salt fix in as often as possible. For us, cherished memories live on the Key.

When I get to the parking lot at one of the beach access spots and climb out of the car, take a deep breath inhaling the salt air crisp and clean one word resonates in my being, home. The soft sugar white sand has a distinct sound when I walk across it with bare feet. There is something special about the way my mind relaxes when I stand on the edge of the water, just where it stops before it bubbles and retreats in to the Gulf. There is no antidepressant better than standing with toes in the soft white sand.

Things are different now. The Curiosity shop is no longer open. Now we sit on the deck of the Sunset Grill, enjoy a drink and a good meal on the beach where my friends and I used to build sandcastles. The view as I drive over the bridge has changed too. I can’t see the Gulf without

The waves lull me in to a peaceful rhythm causing my pulse to match the steady swish of the water. If I stand there with my eyes closed, face lifted to the sun and let the serenity of the key absorb me, for a minute the rest of the world will disappear. If I open my eyes and look

to the horizon I may be lucky enough to see a pod of bottlenose dolphins playing in the turquoise water. My feet sink in to the sand as the water covers them. All that is left is my soul and the natural tranquility of the place. The beach accepts me just as I am and I become a part of it. The only thing better than the beach on a sunny day is the beach at night. Same peaceful rocking of waves and the stillness of the night brings a special calmness as well. The moon glistens off the water shimmering like a million diamonds. It’s pure magic. This place is home. I will never live anywhere else. The salt water is in my blood and the sand is in my soul. Come for a day or come for a life time. All it takes is one time and you will say, “yeah, I get it, magic.”

MIGRATING DOWN SOUTH By Jim Beran | Gilmore Services

Moving from a house to a condo can be a major change. From square footage to privacy, the qualities of living in a detached residential home can vary from laid back condo living. Whether your children are grown, your home requires too much upkeep or you are simply ready for a change, moving to a condo can be an exciting experience! Condos are known for offering wide varieties of amenities, requiring less maintenance and being located in a desirable area such as our slice of paradise, Perdido Key! For such a dramatic shift from a single household to a condominium, having a plan in place for your move and storage needs is essential!

DOWNSIZING Condos are generally less spacious than residential housing. With a new space to work with, it’s time to begin clearing out the clutter! Make a list of your “must haves” and items you can do without. There a tons of ways to help others or make a little bit of money while going through this step. From selling to donating, starting this process at least a month in advance can assure a less stressful move.

PACKING When searching for a professional moving company, look for an insured company that also offers packing services. Professional movers can apply their expertise to pack your home using the most organized and efficient techniques like categorizing your belongings by room for ease. Instead of worrying, let professional movers handle the strategy while you focus on the important stuff like moving into your new home!

MOVING When moving day finally arrives, leave the essentials for last such as your bed, kitchen items, and toiletries. Items like these are the most important when starting your journey in your new abode!

ARRIVING Depending on the floor level, you may need extra assistance moving your furniture and boxes up several stories. Most high-rise condos have larger elevators specifically for this purpose. It’s best to call your Home Owner Association before arrival and see if it is necessary to book an elevator on moving day. Are you preparing to move from a house to a condo? At Gilmore Services, we are here to help! Let us put over 60 years of moving experience to work for you!

PERMANENT HOME

RETIREMENT By James Rumpler | Retiree

Thinking about retiring to Perdido Key? We asked a few recent retirees what brought them here and what they are enjoying about retirement here.

M

y job brought me hereI was a Civil Service employee and the pickings weren’t that good after the Wall came down and the US military started leaving Germany- but we got lucky.

IF YOU LIVE HERE, YOU’LL NEVER HAVE TO SHOVEL SNOW OFF YOUR DRIVEWAY.

We love it here and when we retired we decided there was no place we’d rather be. There is an acronym used by the military “PCS” that is “Change of Station” meaning the movers come and pack your stuff and a couple of days later you’re living and working somewhere else. We PCS’ed 9 times working for the US military – the Army and DOD. My dad was military too so in addition to all my moves as an adult, we moved a lot when I was a kid. All this goes to say we could have relocated anywhere but chose to stay here for the quality of life. Of course we knew about the beaches before we moved here, but we didn’t realize all of the leisure time activities available including cultural, athletic, academic, shopping and more. The somewhat recent resurgence of downtown Pensacola and easy access to other attractive locations make Perdido Key the perfect location to stay. Destin and Seaside. Apalachicola, casinos, New Orleans and Atlanta by plane are an hour away. If you live here, you’ll never have to shovel snow off your driveway. ADOBESTOCK / ISTOCKPHOTO

JONHSON BEACH HISTORY

HISTORY J

ohnson Beach derives its name after the late Private Rosamond Johnson, Jr., who was the first Escambia County resident to join the army, he was 15 at the time. He died during the Korean War on July 26, 1950.

He successfully helped two injured soldiers into safety during the conflict and while he was helping the third he was fatally wounded which caused his death at the age of 17. In the early days, it was not uncommon that recognition for black troops was overlooked. However, he was awarded the Purple Heart medal after his death on August 21, 1950 for his heroic act.

PET STORY

MY BARKIDIARY By Christina Steffen and Rudder

DAY ONE My family and I flew into Ferguson Airport right off Highway 98 near the NAS (Naval Air Station). It’s a small private airport but once a year has an AWESOME open house…I love eating Conecuh sausage (a local favorite) and seeing my girlfriend Copper, she’s a Vizsla. Then we headed home to our house on Perdido Bay.

DAY TWO You know the feeling when you turn down a road heading to your favorite place? I can feel the salt air blowing in my face as I hang my head out of the window. I’m so excited to walk on the Discovery Trail at Johnson’s Beach today on Perdido Key; birds are singing, I see Ospreys returning to their nests with fish for their babies, people are paddle boarding on the Intra Coastal, and finding just the right spot to put up an umbrella to enjoy the sunshine and emerald green waters!

32

DAY THREE

DAY FIVE

Today my cousin, Murf (a Pointing Griffin), came to town. We went to Hub Staceys, a local waterfront hangout with great food, to launch the boat they trailered from St. Louis. We all jumped in and took a quick ride across the water to Sunset Grill and Holiday Harbor. Most of the restaurants are “dog friendly”, and some even give you snacks and a bowl of water! After that we drove the boat to Southwind Marina, a few miles down the coast to pick up some friends. Sharky, a Cairn Terrier, lives there and his family has a boat too! They own the dive charter, Niuhi. Captain Andy takes you scuba diving and spearfishing. Dogs aren’t allowed to dive but we played in the water the rest of the day.

Did I hear someone say, Fort Pickens? Dog Park? Farmers Market? Ft. Pickens is at the end of Pensacola Beach. It’s cool with lots of history, and you can walk around and read historical markers about how it was built to defend Pensacola Bay during the Civil war. But…guess what!! There’s Pensacola Beach Dog Park on the way!! AND it’s on the beach!! Sand between my paws! On the way home we stopped at the Pensacola Farmers market because it’s Saturday and we can walk around and look at all kinds of crafts, veggies, food, and TREATS. I got petted A LOT…someone was playing music too.

DAY FOUR The best part about living and playing in Perdido is there’s SO much to do! I heard the family talking and we’re going to Big Lagoon State Park for a picnic today. It has walking trails, a boat launch, a huge pavilion and amphitheater, and you can rent kayaks and paddle boards there too! I hope they brought lots of hot dogs…

DAY SIX My other cousin, Cooper, is here visiting. He’s a yellow lab and LOVES to swim, maybe a little too much. We took everyone to the new boardwalk at Perdido Pass. Cooper tried to jump in the water when we were walking. He got in lots of trouble…but we ended up sharing a sandwich at The Gulf, an outdoor restaurant that’s made out of shipping containers!

2018 Perdido Key Area Guide & Business Directory | Share your experience with #perdidokeylife

DAY SEVEN Cooper and his family left today but not before we had breakfast at Perdido Bay Country Club. We sat outside watching the golfers. Afterwards, we drove to the dog park off River Road. Chasing Frisbees in the water and running around is the best. We got pretty hungry so we all went to Cosmos in Orange Beach. It’s one of my favorites. They give you water and a plate of treats! It’s totally dog friendly and even has a shop for dogs called Maggies...what could be better than that? On our way home we drove past the Purple Parrot; they have a fun bar and huge swimming pool, I know…I used to live in a condo there. Since it was Tuesday, the Blue Angels were practicing. It was pretty scary hearing the roar of the engines. We headed over to the souvenir shops at Villagio, so Cooper’s family could do a little shopping. Cooper and I got to walk around the plaza looking at the restaurants, ice cream shop, art, and salon. I wish we could have gotten a doggie massage! Next week will be just as fun…I think I heard we’re going to the Flora Bama Yacht Club, across the street from the famous Flora Bama (Florida/ Alabama line). People can anchor their boats there, swim and eat the best firecracker shrimp on the island...plus other deliciousness!

NATURE PROTECTOR: Found only on a small island between Florida and Alabama, the endangered Perdido Key beach mouse is essential to the integrity of its coastal ecosystem. When left uneaten, seeds stored by these tiny rodents may grow into adult plants that help stabilize the dunes in which they are buried. Stronger dunes provide greater protection to local infrastructure during hurricanes.

PERDIDO KIDS PARK

ENJOYING THE KEY WITH KIDS Kids aren’t easily wowed when it comes to playgrounds, but this one will have them asking to go back tomorrow. Located at 10004 Gulf Beach Highway, just a mile north of the Naval Air Station, and managed by Escambia County, Perdido Kids Park is an excellent pit stop to unload the kids if they’ve been cooped up in the car. The park underwent a remodeling in the spring of 2016 and it boasts multiple slides, swings, a rock climbing wall, stationary planes and much more. It has separate big-kid and toddler playgrounds. There is a beautiful halfmile nature trail that encircles the park. It’s also a welcome relief that the park has a water mister for those especially hot and humid summer days. There is a unique sign to guide you into the park from Gulf Beach Highway. On select weekday mornings, you also just might catch a glimpse of the Blue Angels

START A BUSINESS

HOW TO START A

BUSINESS IN PERDIDO KEY

By Emily Etscheid | Marketing & Member Services Manager

R

eady to begin your journey of starting your own business? The road is long and hard but the rewards can be well worth it. Get everything you need to start your business here in the beautiful Perdido Key Area!

Evaluate Your Finances:

Purchase an Insurance Policy:

Do you have the finances for all of your start-up costs? You may need a commercial loan from a local bank or a small business loan from the SBA or an alternate lender. Check out our trusty financial advisors, loans and banks in our member directory on page 116.

Choose an insurance policy that is tailored to your specific needs. A general liability insurance can cover property damage, bodily injury and personal injury. You might also consider obtaining a business owners policy, workers compensation and unemployment insurance. See some of our local trusted insurance companies in the area.

Brainstorm Your Ideas:

Business structure effects everything from how you file taxes to personal liability. There are four basic types: Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Limited Liability Company (LLC), & Corporation. There are many factors to consider when choosing your structure including complexity, liability, taxes, control, capital investment, licenses, permits & regulations. Learn more information about types of business structures on the SBA website.

Have an idea you are very knowledgeable and passionate about? Turn your great ideas into a business! Narrow your ideas down to a small list and search the chosen industry for existing companies; how can you do it better? Another option is to start a franchise, the business structure is already in place, all you need is a location and means to fund the project!

Build A Business Plan: What is the purpose of your business? Who are you selling to? What are your end goals? How will you finance your startup costs? Knowing the answers to these questions are a key component to forming your business plan. You can find guides to writing your own business plan online or from the local Small Business Administration (SBA) at the University of West Florida.

48

Determine Your Business Structure:

Register with The Government And IRS: Get all of your forms and legal documents together to get your business registered! If you decide to build a corporation, you will need an “articles of incorporation” document. You might think about trademarking your business for extra-legal protection. You might even consider obtaining an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS.

Choose Your Partners: Running a business has proven to be a lot of work, you do not have to do it all on your own. Third-party vendors are a great route to seek out experts in their field to help you run your business. Look up our Chamber Member Directory to find trusted members of the community that will help get the job done, anywhere from HR to your phone system.

Build Your Team: You should choose carefully the people you would like to see working on your team. Defining roles and responsibility with your chosen team will help your team communicate and work together clearly to help your business down the line.

FLORA-BAMA

America’s Last Great Roadhouse By Jessica Langston | Florabama

T

he Flora-Bama Lounge opened in 1964 and has been rocking and rolling ever since. Joe Gilchrist became an owner in 1978, Pat McClellan joined him in 1984, then John McInnis and Cameron Price came on board in 2011. Along the way, FloraBama has been recognized by Playboy Magazine, The New Yorker, Maxim, Jimmy Buffet, John Grisham, Kenny Chesney, USA Today, Bon Appetite, CNN Travel, The Huffington Post, Fox News, Travel Channel, Rolling Stone and Southern Living. Part of the Flora-Bama’s epic history includes Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party, Polar Bear Dip, Bulls on the Beach and Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival, just to name a few. Let’s start in January and work our way through the year. Drop in for the Flora-Bama’s famous Polar Bear Dip on New Year’s Day. Guests of all ages don crazy costumes and dip into the Gulf of Mexico at high noon each year. All participants who fully submerge are treated to draft beer and a hot lunch of turnip greens and black-eyed peas.

64

The Super Chili Bowl Cook-Off takes place the first Saturday in February and pits cook against cook over steeping pots of chili. This cooking competition offers four-person teams a chance to compete for bragging rights, and notorious perpetual trophies. Team members receive free draft beer and cocktails, event T-shirts and aprons included with their entry fees. Attendees purchase a $20 all-inclusive ticket at the door and get unlimited chili samples, a free draft beer or water, along with plenty of peace of mind as all proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Flora-Bama’s Beach Run/Walk for America’s Warriors gives participants a chance to run a half marathon or 5k completely in the sand along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Awards are given three-deep in each age division and proceeds benefit the Special Operation Warrior Foundation. Late April brings the ultimate trifecta -Mullet Man Triathlon, Mullet Swing Golf Classic and Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party. Bikini contests are another fun part of our beachfront pastimes, taking place during Mullet Toss, Memorial Day weekend, fourth of July and Labor Day weekend. Participants enter for free and compete for cash and Flora-Bama gift certificates.

The first weekend in June marks the famous Fishing Rodeo, featuring adult and children’s divisions, plus competitive divisions such as the Off-Shore Challenge, King Mackerel Championship and Red Snapper Jackpot when the season permits. Sandstock is held the second Saturday in August and encompasses multiple bands performing songs from the original Woodstock in August of 1969. Bulls on the Beach, a real rodeo with cowboys and live bulls, rolls around every second Friday and Saturday in September. Adults pay $25 for a one night ticket or $40 for both nights. Children ages 7-17 pay $15 for one night or $20 for both. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the rodeo is from 8-9:30 p.m. Shindig on the Sand happens the last Saturday in September and is a celebration for all the many musicians that make the Flora-Bama an amazing live music venue 365 days a year on multiple stages. Oktoberfest comes to the Flora-Bama every first Saturday in October; this honky-tonk style party celebrates German traditions and beer -- lots and lots of beer.

PHOTO CRED: LILLIAN RECREATIONAL PARK

Lillian Recreational Park By Dan McArdle

O

ne of the hidden gems of this area is the Lillian Recreational Park. Tucked away off Highway 98 and laid out over 17 acres is an idyllic park built for family fun and the coming together of community. What began over 20 years ago as the idea of two men has finally become something of a Field of Dreams. And in 2018, the park will host the inaugural season of Elberta High School baseball. “Two guys wanted to do something about a park,” Optimist Club of Perdido Bay member and the park’s board president Mike Russell recalled of the late Tim Champagne and Leon Boone’s concept and belief in youth sports for the area. Russell, on board from the beginning, steered its progress to today’s version, now maintained in part by Frank Broze, Monica Leonard, master gardeners and on-site caretakers. Described as “the best family destination in Lillian,” the recreational park includes an 8/10 mile walking track, a dog run, kiddie playground, t-ball, minor league and major league baseball fields, a basketball/pickleball court, a football/

soccer field, and a native Azalea garden, maintained by Tom Dodds Nurseries. Market-in-the-Park is a recurring event and a great time to find locally grown vegetables, handmade crafts and many other local products. The market is held every second Saturday, weather permitting. A donation to the park is appreciated from vendors in lieu of a setup fee. With the help of countless donors and volunteers, including past board president Gene Fell, the park has been planning for something big like high school baseball for many years. Russell and Broze both agreed that Fell’s influence cannot be understated. “Gene has been a Godsend from day one,” Russell said of the one-time park board member. “He’s had some good hours up here in operators and equipment.” Broze, who wears a “Believe in Heroes” t-shirt, supporting the Wounded Warrior Project, also recounted a story about Gene’s generosity. “I called (Gene) up one time, told him we needed some clay. He said, ‘What do you need and when do you need it?’ He came out in one day and dumped it all where I wanted it.” When Broze tried to chase him down at a fish fry and tell him he hadn’t seen a bill yet, Fell told him, “When you get a bill,

@VisitPerdidoKey

worry about it.” Of course, Broze never saw that bill in the mail. “He’s always, always done that for us,” Broze said. “He’s given us a lot of money in dirt.” Stories abound of the time and donations from local men and women, both here and gone. In 2017, Russell donated the new soccer field lights. It has been a long process, but one that Tim Champagne would have been proud to see come to fruition. The brand new Elberta Warriors baseball team, coached by Lillian resident and former Pensacola Catholic coach Greg Seibert, will now play at the field named in Champagne’s memory. Folks are welcome to join pickleball games on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to dusk. For more information, call 251-942-6026 or find them on Facebook at Lillian Recreational Park, Lillian, AL. Donations to the park can be made via Paypal on their Facebook page. If you are traveling west on Highway 98 over the Lillian (Perdido Bay) Bridge, turn left onto Perdido Street, just past Lillian United Methodist Church. The park is at 33914 Widell Avenue.

ere in the Perdido Area, we do things a little more laid-back. In less than 30 minutes, you can find yourself immersed in arts and culture akin to that of a big city. Just take a day trip downtown and spend the afternoon by strolling through the streets of downtown Pensacola. It has a lot of inspiring art and history museums which can keep you for a day. These cultural, educational and fun museums and galleries are just a tip of the iceberg for downtown Pensacola.

in the heart of downtown Pensacola, you may find Blue Morning Gallery. It is surrounded by casual and fine dining, live music, theatrical venues, and the architecture of a rich historical past. An assortment of painting styles, photography, woodworking, pottery, jewelry, metal work, iconic images of Pensacola and Pensacola Beach landmarks, and so much more are always on hand for locals and visitors alike seven days a week.

cater to adults and children alike. The numerous classes and exhibitions for kids are purely astounding. They offer everything from preschool art classes to working with the Art Academy for Autism. Mainline Art house was founded in May 2013 to fill a void in the arts community of Pensacola. Owners Jason and Mikel Traffanstead, saw a lack of a true commercial gallery, specifically one focused on modern local art. Mainline Art house seeks to connect collectors with the talented artists that call Pensacola home. Quayside Art Gallery, located in the historic District of Pensacola, is one of the oldest and largest member-owned art galleries in the US. This is dedicated to fostering and promoting original fine arts and crafts in the West Florida region. Guided tours, free of charge, are available to interested groups and organizations upon request.

FORTS AND MUSEUMS

Forts and Museums

A

fter the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the United States decided to build forts at all major harbors. When Florida was added to the U.S. in 1821, Pensacola’s location on the Gulf of Mexico made it a prime selection for a navy yard. Four forts were built to protect that yard: Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island, Fort McRee on Foster’s Bank, Fort Barrancas and Fort Advanced Redoubt on the mainland.

WIKIPEDIA

FORT PICKENS

FORT MCREE

FORT BARRANCAS

Facing Pensacola Bay, Fort Pickens still stands today, commemorating the significant history that happened within. Named after the Revolutionary War hero, Andrew Pickens, Fort Pickens was one of the few forts in the South the Confederates did not capture. It also held Apache prisoners, including the infamous Geronimo, who was imprisoned here for a year in 1886. Fort Pickens remained a strong military outpost along Pensacola Bay until 1947 when it was decommissioned. Today, it is part of the National Parks System, and park rangers give free daily tours at 2 P.M. The Fort Pickens campground is open year-round, with special events planned for each month.

Make a boating trip to Fort McRee, one of the most beautiful spots overlooking the sparkling Gulf of Mexico, and explore the fort’s ruins. At the eastern end of the Perdido Key is an area once known as Foster’s Bank, used by the U.S. Army to defend Pensacola Bay. During the Civil War, the fort was heavily damaged in a massive artillery battle between Confederate forces at McRee and Barrancas and Union forces at Fort Pickens and onboard the ships Niagara and Richmond in November 1861. Some ruins remain, and you can hike to the top of Fort McRee for a breathtaking view of the island.

Located on a bluff with stunning view of Pensacola Bay is Fort Barrancas where it eyes its one-time rival, Fort Pickens, across the water. It is conveniently located only a half mile from the National Naval Aviation Museum. The Spanish, who provided the name meaning “bluff” in Spanish, were involved in the construction as early as 1763. Today the fort is part of the National Parks System and includes trails where Civil War Confederates once walked, a visitor center, picnic table and special events such as lantern tours. Hike through a short, scenic trench trail that connects Fort Barrancas to the Advanced Redoubt. The Redoubt was constructed to work in conjunction with Fort Barrancas to defend the tip of the Pensacola peninsula and Pensacola Navy Yard from attack by land. Call 850-455-5167 for more information.
