OSHKOSH AND WINNEBAGO COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE VisitOshkosh.com

OSHKOSH — WISCONSIN’S EVENT CITY

Oshkosh: A Brief History Oshkosh was established in 1853, named in honor of the Menominee nation’s Chief Oshkosh. In 1836, Chief Oshkosh reluctantly ceded the area to the United States government. By 1873, Oshkosh had 24 sawmills, 15 shingle mills and seven sash and door companies in operation, giving the city the nickname Sawdust City. The streets always smelled of freshly cut wood and were paved with inch-thick sawdust. In the 19th century, Oshkosh was second in population to Milwaukee and the largest Fox River Valley city. The Grand Opera House’s 1883 opening gave Oshkosh the popular tagline “Wisconsin’s Event City,” which is still used today!
