Baseball is our business in Austin, MN.
Picturesque and historic Marcusen Park has been creating community and family memories for over 70 years. Not only notable for being the home field for many of Austin’s baseball teams, but it has also witnessed a legendary home run hit by Twin’s Kent Hrbek.
Hrbek’s home run in August 1978 came in an American Legion state tourney title game against fellow, future Minnesota pro baseball star Terry Steinbach of New Ulm.
Steinbach, only a sophomore at the time and playing 2nd base (not catcher like his MLB career), won the tourney’s MVP award over Hrbek, who hit three homers during the tournament.
In the title game, Hrbek – the Bloomington team’s first baseman at 6’4”, 205 pounds – “unleashed a towering drive over the centerfield fence, 400 feet from home plate and over the top of a board fence on top of the wire fence. It was one of the longest homers ever hit out of Marcusen.”
This came in the 9th inning but meant nothing as Hrbek’s Bloomington team lost 12-4 to Steinbach’s New Ulm squad. Today, Hrbek is in the Minnesota Twins’ Hall of Fame and Steinbach is in the Oakland A’s Hall of Fame as a catcher. Hrbek was part of the Twins’ 1987 and 1991 World Series championships teams. Steinbach closed out his career by playing for the Twins in the 1997-1999 seasons but played in three World Series for the Oakland A’s (1988, 1989 and 1990), winning in ‘89. Marcusen Park is also the first Minnesota community field with LED lighting.
The Austin American Legion has been sponsoring the local baseball team for over 100 years! Austin VFW baseball is scheduled to host the VFW State Baseball Tournament of Champions in 2025 and possibly 2026 at the Riverland Community College Complex. A LOOK BACK

The Austin Ladies' Floral Club formed in March 1869 with twelve members and two goals.
They wanted to promote taste and skill in horticulture to make Austin more “pleasing to the eye” and to create a circulating library. Membership quickly grew to thirty and the yards around town reflected their enthusiasm. The first club president was Esther Morse Mitchell. She was a teacher and missionary who came to Austin in the 1860’s. She served as president of the Floral Club for 32 years.
The club planned their first floral show and exhibition fundraiser in August. The first sale was a potted red geranium and the event was pretty successful. They sold enough plants to purchase 100 books and received 123 donated books. These 223 books became the foundation of their library.
Floral Club members continued to raise money and purchase books for their library. A committee carefully considered each book to ensure it was appropriate. The first year, the books were kept in a room over the People’s Bakery. For the next several years, the library lived in Floral Club members’ homes and in Mrs. McMillan’s millinery store. Around 1884, the library (about 1,060 books) was given a small room in the courthouse basement.
Around 1900, the members of the Floral Club sent a petition to Andrew Carnegie for one of his “Carnegie libraries.” Between 1883-1929, Andrew Carnegie donated money to build 2,509 libraries around the world. Although Carnegie initially offered $12,000 to build the library, Lyman Baird (an Austin lawyer) visited Mr. Carnegie’s staff in Washington, D.C. and the city received $15,000.

On November 1, 1901, the Austin City Council set aside the lot on the corners of St. Paul and Bridge Streets and agreed to provide the library with $1,200 a year. The following July, a library board was elected. Construction began a few months later. The Austin Carnegie Library opened on April 18, 1904 and the Floral Club turned over 3,500 books (by 1911, the library held 7,000 volumes.)
Despite a major addition in 1964, the community outgrew the Carnegie Library building. Thanks to the efforts of the Floral Club, what began as a 223 book circulating library in 1869 became a collection of over 97,000 books by 1996. The building was demolished in 1996 shortly after the new Austin Public Library opened.
