ON THE COVER At more than 200 feet tall, the SkyDance Pedestrian Bridge soars above I-40 downtown and has become one of the city’s most unique landmarks. Its design was inspired by the “sky dance” of the scissor-tailed flycatcher, Oklahoma’s state bird. The Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau incorporated the bridge into its new logo in 2014.

A MOMENT TO REMEMBER Remembering those lost, those who survived and those changed forever by the events of April 19, 1995. By Ann Clark
I
t’s been 20 years since the peace of Oklahoma City was shattered by a truck bomb that destroyed 168 lives and impacted countless more. To this day, it remains the worst home-grown terrorist attack on American soil. But our friends and neighbors didn’t bow to terror as the attackers intended. Rather, they

banded together in a community wide display of spontaneous altruism. When a need for blood donations was broadcast, it had to be followed by an advisory to stay home after donation centers were overwhelmed by the response. When an announcement was made that work boots were requested at the site, workers pulled up, took off their boots and left them.

That spirit of generosity – of giving until there’s no more to give – has been part of the city’s DNA ever since it was founded and was recognized by visiting journalists in town to cover the bombing as the “Oklahoma Standard.” One reporter said her first image of the city was not of people running away from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in fear – but running toward it to help. And this reaction wasn’t just limited to Oklahomans. The national response to the 1995 bombing highlighted the best of the American character, with people from all walks of life and all parts of the country coming together. Rescue workers from Arizona and as far away as New York began flooding into the state within hours of the bombing. Together, we vowed never to forget those lost and never to succumb to fear. And with that promise and perseverance, the people of Oklahoma City were determined to look forward optimistically and to hold on to their belief in themselves and the future. Two decades later, our city has been utterly transformed. The once-quiet downtown area is now a bustling center of commerce, eateries and nightlife, and we enjoy a burgeoning tourism sector – thanks in large part to the arrival of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Increasing numbers of people are calling Oklahoma City home, and it was named one of America’s 10 fastest growing cities in 2014. The lessons learned on that day, and in the months and years thereafter, have changed the way America responds to violence and terrorism. But there’s a new generation of young people who don’t remember 1995, and it’s up to all of us to teach them how even the most tragic event can bring out the best in people. As we approach the 20th anniversary, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum has recently completed more than $8 million in renovations that unveil the final pieces of the story, including the investigation and the journey to justice. Hundreds of new artifacts and oral histories, along with 35 new interactive stations, engage young people like never before. And the new Memorial overlook, a 40-foot glass wall in the last chapter of the Museum, gives a magnificent view of a city skyline that continues to thrive. Much like that skyline, the Museum has been reimagined for a new era. Visit and experience for yourself the remarkable story that shaped our city’s future. Visitors from across the country and other nations can bring back to their own communities the important lessons learned on that day in 1995, and together, we can work toward a world where terror and violence have no place.

Adventure D I S T R I C T Oklahoma City’s Adventure District is chock-full of the kind of family fun that can make anyone feel young at heart. This two-mile area includes the can’t-miss National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the nationally-renowned Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens and plenty of hands-on fun at Science Museum Oklahoma. It’s also home to Remington Park Racing Casino, the state’s premier racing facility with Oklahoma City’s only casino.

Oklahoma City’s foodie scene is alive and well in the Asian District, where an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s created a hub now known for its Asian fusion cuisine. Here you will find some of the best Asian restaurants in OKC, including authentic Vietnamese food that rivals any found this side of the Pacific.
The buildings along Film Row once housed film distribution offices for major Hollywood studios. Changes in technology have made the need for distribution offices a thing of the past, but Oklahoma City’s preserved district has been reborn as a creative hub on the western edge of downtown. It’s now home to a mix of artistic businesses, locally-owned restaurants and more.

While Vietnamese flavors typically dominate the restaurant offerings in this district, Grand House China Bistro is a great option if you are looking for Chinese fare. If you are here on the weekends, be sure to sample the Grand House’s traditional dim sum menu for brunch.
Grab a bowl of phõ. The Asian District is best experienced through food, and it’s hard to beat this traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. Favorites with the locals include Phõ Cuong and Phõ Lien Hoa.
Explore the aisles of Super Cao Nguyen. With an extensive selection of specialty ingredients and hard-to-find Asian foods, Super Cao Nguyen offers a shopping experience that is hard to find outside of Asia.

Part coffee shop, part music venue and part movie screening club, The Paramount honors the history of its building by furthering the cinematic arts in OKC. If you want to catch a flick while you’re in town, you’ll have to purchase a membership. But most of the music performances feature local musicians – with no cover charge.
Grab a slice at Joey’s Pizzeria. While there’s always debate among locals about which pizza joint makes the best pie, Joey’s Pizzeria definitely ranks at the top of most lists. Fresh ingredients and creative flavors make this a sure bet when craving a slice.

Automobile No area of Oklahoma City simultaneously tells of its storied past and its bright future quite like Automobile Alley. Located just north of downtown along Broadway Avenue, this revitalized and revamped district once housed the city’s car dealerships — a fact that is memorialized in the architecture of its buildings and their numerous neon signs. Automobile Alley is now home to some of OKC’s best restaurants and retailers, combining to create a vibe that will make you feel right at home. 18

History Tour Oklahoma City’s unique history conjures images of an old western movie and its historical museums fill in the scenes, telling the story of Oklahoma’s proud past and thriving present culture. If you’re a history buff, you’ve come to the right place. By Jody Britt Starting with tales of the American West, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum presents an internationally renowned collection of Western art and artifacts. The museum is expansive in both space and cowboy history, with a lifesize replica of an Old West town and the Children’s Cowboy Corral. Even if you’re not a “cowboy fan,” you can’t help but be impressed by the exquisite sculptures and paintings, as well as the surrounding grounds with beautiful statuaries. You can also experience Oklahoma’s history through its people at the GaylordPickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum. With the museum’s high-tech, interactive exhibits, you can “meet” the faces and voices of both famous and everyday Oklahomans. Brief videos will introduce the lives of better-known Oklahomans like Will Rogers, Reba McEntire, Wiley Post and Mat Hoffman. The museum is kid-friendly and great for group tours. Honoring Oklahoma’s military past, the 45th Infantry Museum details our 34

state’s contribution to the Armed Forces through times of war, national disaster and peacekeeping periods. Displays range from cartoonist Bill Mauldin’s WWII characters to one of the nation’s largest military firearm collections. The museum has free daily admission and also hosts two annual events to pay tribute to military men and women on both Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. The Red Earth Museum in downtown OKC is a small gem packed with artifacts dating from prehistoric times up to contemporary contributions of native cultures. The museum has a broad permanent collection of prehistoric artifacts as well as unique finds such as the Deupree Cradleboard Collection. You will find American Indian art, pottery, basketry, textiles and beadwork on display, as well as a retail outlet with native artists’ work. The museum is free to the public and open during weekdays. If you’re in town the first weekend in June, the Red Earth Festival is one of the largest Native American cultural events in the country with a parade, dance competition, art exhibitions and more.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder have certainly captured our hearts, Oklahoma City’s passion for sports doesn’t end with basketball season – not by a long shot. From hockey and soccer to softball and canoeing, Oklahoma City offers enough activities to satisfy sports fans of all types. Baseball The area’s favorite Minor League Baseball team is the Oklahoma City Dodgers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team has won five division titles in the past decade and a conference title in 2008 and features some of baseball’s top young talent. Paddle Sports The Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River in downtown Oklahoma City is a hot spot for urban recreation. For those into outdoor recreation, there are plenty of places throughout Oklahoma City where you can enjoy the great outdoors on the water, on your feet or on wheels of all kinds. Lake Hefner One popular spot among the locals for all kinds of recreation is Lake Hefner, on the city’s central northwest side. On any given day, you’ll find walkers, runners, bicyclists, roller-bladers, skateboarders and more enjoying the Hefner Trails that circle the lake. Catch some of the city’s most glorious sunsets at Lake Hefner, as well as some waves, especially if you’re into sailing or water sports like windsurfing. On the lake’s south side is the Lake Hefner Golf Course; on the east, at Britton Road off the Lake Hefner Parkway, are restaurants that sit on the lake.

OKC Oklahoma River The Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River offers some of Oklahoma City’s more popular and newer ways to spend time outdoors. Located within walking distance of the hotels and restaurants of the Bricktown Entertainment District, the Boathouse District is the focal point for OKC RIVERSPORT’s rowing, kayaking, running, cycling and fitness programs. Visitors can rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and water bicycles, and check out dragon boating. They can climb the six-story SandRidge Sky Trail, an 80-foot adventure course to be climbed while safely fastened with a harness. From the top, they can zip across the Oklahoma River and back on the new SandRidge Sky Zip, slide down the Sky Slide or drop down via the Rumble Drop. For younger visitors, the Youth Zone packs in plenty of adventure. The Sky Tykes adventure course is a scaled-down version of the SandRidge Sky Trail. There’s also the Cloud Bounce, a 40-foot inflatable pillow for bouncing, a miniature zip line and the Extreme Air bungee. The Boathouse District playground is free. And more outdoor adventure options will be opening in the next couple of years, including a new whitewater rafting and kayaking center, bringing water sports to a whole new level in OKC.
Martin Park Nature Center For hiking, nature and wildlife, visit Martin Park Nature Center at 5000 W. Memorial Rd., an oasis of calm by the John Kilpatrick Turnpike. The area features 2.5 miles of hiking trails cut through the woods and grasslands of the 144-acre park, where visitors can see many species of animals. Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park OKC’s own Mat Hoffman is an unparalleled pioneer in the sport of freestyle BMX. He was the subject of the fantastic film “The Birth of Big Air,” produced by Spike Jonze, Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine for ESPN’s 30 for 30 series. Appropriately, Oklahoma City named its Action Sports Park for Hoffman in 2005. The park features both a bowl course and a street course and has been named one of the top 10 skate parks in the U.S. by National Geographic Travel Guide. The park is open from dawn to 11 p.m. and is free.
Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge Want to get closer to nature in Oklahoma City? Visit the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, located at the north end of Lake Overholser, which is a pristine 1,000 acres that have remained unchanged since before statehood. Hiking the area will put you in close contact with whitetail deer, beaver and egrets and beautiful views of the lake, bottomland forest and marshlands. You can also rent kayaks or canoes and explore the North Canadian River through the refuge, as well as fish.

Running routes for leisurely joggers and marathon masters. Your daily run is a great way to explore Oklahoma City while also getting in a little exercise. With more than 140 miles of trails throughout the city, you’re never far from a great running path. But to help you narrow it down, here are a few suggested running routes.
LAKE HEFNER
Lake Hefner is a haven for sports and recreation enthusiasts. Here you’ll find nearly 10 miles of paved, multi-purpose trails with markers every half mile.
OKLAHOMA RIVER TRAILS Some of the newest trails in OKC, the Oklahoma River Trails are 13 miles of unimpeded, paved trails along the Oklahoma River.
OKLAHOMA CITY MEMORIAL MARATHON
OKC is home to one of the top marathons in the world – the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Run each April by more than 25,000 runners, the marathon has a number of options for every skill level: marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 5k and even a kids’ marathon. As far as marathons go, this one ranks in the moderate to fast category with 9:03 only 140 feet of total elevation difference over the entire run.
DOWNTOWN
While you’re bound to come across stop lights, crosswalks and cars, Downtown also offers some great running routes. Here’s one that will take you by a few of downtown’s best sights, and help you clock nearly 2 miles – not bad for being away from home. • Start at the southwest corner of the Oklahoma City National Memorial (N. Harvey Avenue & NW 4th Street) • Head west on NW 4th Street and then go south on N. Hudson Avenue. • You’ll run south on Hudson for three blocks until you reach the Oklahoma City Museum of Art at Couch Drive. • From here, head west on Couch Drive over to N. Walker Avenue where you’ll see the Civic Center Music Hall. • Head south on N. Walker Avenue for five blocks until you reach W. Reno Avenue. • Run east along W. Reno Avenue for three blocks – you’ll run by the Myriad Gardens (they’ll be on the north). • When you get to S. Robinson Avenue, you’ll be able to see the Chesapeake Energy Arena. • From here, head back north on Robinson Avenue until you reach NW 4th Street. • Go back west on NW 4th Street for one block and you’ll find yourself back where you started – at the Oklahoma City National Memorial. If you’d like something simpler, here’s our suggestion – head over to the Myriad Gardens (add address of parking lot). If you make your way around the exterior sidewalk just 1.5 times, you’ll have gone a mile.

Paseo’s First Friday Gallery Walk Paseo is Oklahoma City’s official arts district and the host of First Friday, a monthly “open house” on the first Friday (and Saturday) for the galleries in the district. The Paseo is home to more than 17 galleries, and more than 70 artists display their work, much of it for sale, for the First Friday gallery walk. The Paseo District is located about two miles north of downtown, and all the galleries are within a short walking distance of each other. In addition to the artists, some of the district’s best restaurants, including Paseo Grill and Picasso’s Café, offer live music and special menu items. Picasso’s Cafe is open for lunch Saturday as well. Guests can view artists at work in their galleries, art openings and new and featured artists. A wide variety of media art is available, including painting, sculpture and mixed media.

Plaza’s Live on the Plaza Located just a mile northwest of downtown is the fun and funky Plaza District. This historic area at NW 16th Street and Blackwelder Avenue hosts Live on the Plaza the second Friday of every month. The event is an art walk, and local businesses, including restaurants and retail stores, stay open late. Vendors set up tables and booths along the district selling handmade items, vintage clothing, art and many other products. Street entertainers, live music and some of the metro’s best people watching make this an energetic event suitable for all ages.

Automobile Alley’s Shop Hop Automobile Alley is the historic car district between NW 4th Street and NW 10th Street on Broadway Avenue in downtown Oklahoma City. Some of the metro’s first and most famous car dealerships started on Automobile Alley, and the historic buildings have been restored and repurposed. Shop Hop is a familyfriendly event on the third Thursday of every month featuring live music, street artists, extended shopping hours and special offers from area restaurants and businesses.
Premiere on Film Row Premiere on Film Row follows Shop Hop on the third Friday of every month. The area is one of Oklahoma City’s newest restoration projects, and is located just west of downtown on Sheridan Ave. The event runs from 6 to 10:00 p.m. and features food trucks, classic movies at The Paramount, music, art courtesy of IAO Gallery and activities for all ages.

H&8th Night Market H&8th, the largest monthly food truck event in the nation, happens on the last Friday of the month (March through October). Short for Hudson Avenue and NW 8th Street, the intersection where the event started, H&8th now offers more than 40 food trucks, local beer, short order poems, shopping and live music. Local businesses in the area stay open late, including Elemental Coffee, Ludivine, Scissortale Salon and Verdigris. H&8th has grown from an average attendance of 8,000 per event in 2013 to between 20,000 and 40,000 attendees every month during the 2014 season.

Uptown 23rd’s Sunday Funday Rounding out the monthly festival calendar is Sunday Funday, which runs from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and features live music, fun brunch options and discounts at participating businesses. For a great combination of dancing and local (and regional) music, it is difficult to beat Granddad’s Bar. Owner Greg Seal wanted to open a neighborhood bar as an homage to his grandparents, and regulars are invited to bring pictures and mementos of their own grandparents to adorn the walls. But he had no idea how popular this neighborhood bar would become. Americana, bluegrass, red dirt and traditional country acts, as well as singer/songwriters, are regulars at Granddad’s. The spacious dance floor is usually full of people who know how to two step or are content just to make their own steps. The vibe is friendly and festive, and the crowd is a mixture of nearly every age, something Seal hoped would happen from the beginning. Oklahoma City has a vibrant lineup of both visual and performing arts with everything from opera, ballet and Broadway to galleries, large-scale art installations and film premieres. Civic Center Music Hall The city’s major performance arts venue is the Civic Center Music Hall featuring live shows by the Oklahoma City Ballet, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Lyric Theatre, Canterbury Choral Society, Celebrity Attractions and more. The historic art deco building has three theaters, a grand reception hall, and multiple suites as well as a lovely exterior that is illuminated at night. With great seating and superb acoustics, there isn’t a bad seat in the house.
LOCAL TIP Make reservations for dinner at the Museum Café across the street in the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. You can also enjoy dessert and coffee at the Rich Beans Café in the Civic Center lobby before the show, as well as drinks from a lobby bar during select performances.

Oklahoma City Museum of Art The Oklahoma City Museum of Art houses three floors of exhibits ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to French impressionism to contemporary art – a great mix of subjects, styles and media. It also houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Dale Chihuly glass in the world, including a stunning 55-foot tower in the lobby. “Fabergé: Jeweler to the Tsars” will be the highlight exhibit June 20 to September 27, showcasing Carl Fabergé’s fine craftsmanship in more than 230 pieces of jewelry and adornments once belonging to the Russian Imperial family.
LOCAL TIP For $5 on Thursdays, you can explore the museum until 9:00 p.m. The museum also opens their Roof Terrace after 5 p.m., offering sweeping views of the Oklahoma City skyline, a full bar and live music from May through October. The Museum Café offers a stellar Sunday brunch as well.
Exhibit C Opened in 2014, Exhibit C is downtown’s newest art gallery featuring handcrafted artwork by Chickasaw artists. Located in Bricktown, the gallery is a perfect combination of arts, Native American culture and 64

IAO Gallery It doesn’t get more Oklahoman than the IAO (Individual Artists of Oklahoma) Gallery. In addition to the two stunning gallery spaces with visual art, they also present poetry, film and performances – all by emerging and established Oklahoman artists. The gallery has free admission and exhibits rotate every couple of months. IAO is located on Film Row (West Sheridan Street), known for its historic Hollywood past and renovated movie-themed cityscape.

Lyric at the Plaza Lyric at the Plaza is an intimate theater in the Plaza District, an emerging commercial district located north of downtown on Northwest 16th Street. The location was recently transformed into a vibrant performance theater playing live productions of musicals, plays and new works.
LOCAL TIP There is a plethora of options in the Plaza District to grab a bite to eat or a quick drink before or after the show. Those with a sweet tooth will definitely want to check out the pie selection at Pie Junkie.
The Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center The Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center is a hidden gem, located on the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds with a spacious gallery filled with painting, pottery, weaving and more. Orly Genger’s “Terra” exhibition (shown above), running through October 2015 at Campbell Park, is located at NW 11th and Broadway, which is also the site of the museum’s future location. “Terra”
is a larger-than-life exhibition of 1.4 million feet of recycled lobster-fishing rope painted with 350 gallons of terra-cotta colored paint – with Oklahoma’s red dirt and open landscape as the inspiration behind the exhibition.

The Paseo Arts District The Paseo Arts District is home to a vibrant group of artists and 17 galleries nestled along two blocks of Spanish revival architecture with original stucco buildings and clay tile roofs. This charming little neighborhood has a variety of independent artist galleries among fine restaurants and shops, all within walking distance.

Taste the variety of Oklahoma City’s culinary scene with these signature dishes from some of the best local restaurants.
FOOD FAVORITES
Last year, chef Vuong Nguyen and his partners opened Guernsey Park, inspired by the traditional Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and Thai flavors from the local Asian District to create a new culinary voice. No dish better bridges the gap between traditional Asian flavors and modern technique than Thit Kho Tau. Meaning “braised meat in light sauce,” this common Vietnamese dish consists of marinated pork and hard-boiled eggs served in coconut water. Nguyen recently left the restaurant, but chef Sam Salinas of Austin’s Uchiko has taken the reins and continues to present this fusion of classical French technique and Asian flavors. Thit Kho Tau is a hard-seared slice of slowcooked pork confit over a mound of sushi rice, topped with a soft-cooked egg rolled in bread crumbs and flash-fried so when broken by a fork, warm egg yolk yielding rich flavor over the pork and a smattering of carrots, cilantro and Thai chiles.

This Latin favorite is stacked corn tortillas spread with black beans covered in a garlicky tomato sauce called chirmol, queso fresco, sliced avocados, longainiza sausage, fried eggs and tortilla chips with a side of salsa verde. The dish was introduced to Oklahoma City by Café Antigua, but is now also available at Café Kacao, which has a familial relationship. It’s the kind of breakfast that renders lunch moot unless, of course, you’re having it for lunch – which you can because it’s iserved throughout the day.

Change is the standard at this farm-to-fork concept except when it comes to bone marrow. Chef/partners Jonathon Stranger and Russ Johnson spend much of their time sourcing local ingredients to support their ever-changing menu, but the roasted bone marrow is one of a very few constants on the menu. Served in half lengthwise, the rich, buttery marrow is eaten with a small fork and served with house-made condiments. Culinary adventurers should try the Bone Marrow Luge, which includes a shot of whiskey poured down the emptied canal.

Once upon a time, Oklahoma City’s stockyards were not only home to Cattlemen’s Café but also a host of slaughterhouses. Among the daily delivery of beef to Cattlemen’s was what the slaughterhouses considered waste byproduct from the cattle’s nether regions. Rather than throw the gems away, Cattlemen’s batter-fried what originally were calf fries and served them as garnish. Soon diners demanded more. Today, Cattlemen’s serves more lamb fries than anything else at the 104-year-old restaurant, which specializes in choice and prime steaks.

Anyone who knows ceviche will tell you the dish was conceived in Peru. So it’s no surprise that La Brasa Peruvian Kitchen serves the most striking example of ceviche in town, using fresh seafood, citrus juices and the secret ingredient Aji Amarillo. La Brasa chef Niel Zambrano includes monstrous corn called choclos, razor-thin red onions, additional essence of the slightly more fiery rocoto pepper, avocados and sweet potatoes in its Mixto and sushi-like slices in a Aji marinade for the Japanese-inspired Tiradito, which are among nine different versions of ceviche the restaurant offers. All deliver a ceviche experience you won’t soon forget.

The Fried Chicken Pot Pie represents Kitchen No. 324’s passion for comfort food bursting with flavor and a dash of whimsy. The dish holds in common with a traditional incarnations a cobbler-like biscuit crust riding a rich, savory chicken filling. However a hole in the center of the pastry makes way for a fried-chicken leg to stand tall like the mast of a sailboat. The brainchild of Good Egg chefs Robert Black and Chris McCabe, it’s the kind of dish dazzling to the eye and nostalgic to the palate.

The humble fried-onion burger was born of necessity during The Great Depression in Western Oklahoma but has since become culinary legend in the red-dirt state. Oklahoma culinary contributions to the world is a marriage of fresh onions and hand-formed beef patties pressed into submission over a white-hot griddle until a juicy burger dappled with onions equal parts caramelized and charred is born. Long the specialty of three small burger joints in El Reno, Oklahoma, Tucker’s opened in 2011 and has since opened two more locations by popular demand.

Big Truck Tacos: They didn’t invent food trucks in Oklahoma City, but they did make them cool. If you can’t track down one of the two trucks, you’ll find its headquarters in Uptown 23rd serving gourmet tacos with attitude for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bleu Garten: Oklahoma City’s first full-time food truck court recently opened on NW 10 Street between Broadway Avenue and Hudson Avenue. Owner Hunter Wheat has created a family-friendly venue open year70

round that includes a host of food trucks and a built-in bar and beverage area with an eye toward expanding to pop-up retailers and gatherings for karaoke, football watch parties, film screenings and general fellowship centered around eating, drinking and making merry. Riding on the popularity of the H&8th Night Market (see page 53), Bleu Garten hopes to expand on the street party vibe and sustain its viability. The ambitious concept hires a rotating complement of trucks while providing what they can’t: restrooms, a bar, shaded seating, misters, heaters and entertainment.

The Mule: The gourmet grilledcheese emporium was the flame that lit the fuse to the booming Plaza District. The Mule raised the standards for local casual dining, offering a monster beer list, full bar and a chalkboard where you can leave the names of friends for whom you’ve purchased a cold one.

McNellie’s Public House: If you drive to Midtown after dark, it will become immediately apparent where locals go for burgers and beer.
Burgers Nic’s Grill: When Justin Nicholas purchased a property near Northwest 10th Street and North Pennsylvania Avenue he was more interested in house-flipping and landscaping. But the property had a tiny diner at the curb so he decided to try his hand at the restaurant business. Since then, his 17-seat café is never open when it doesn’t have a line for his thick burgers served crusty on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside.
Irma’s Burger Shack: Using grass-fed beef from Oklahoma’s NoName Ranch in Wynnewood,
Irma’s also serves standard burgers, sandwiches and appetizers plus plenty of cold beer with locations in Midtown and on Western Avenue.
Pizza Empire Slice House: The Plaza District’s home for monster pizza slices, a full bar, late-night hours, patio seating and a dining room dedicated to the exaltation of popular culture.
Hideaway Pizza: The state’s most successful pizza chain was born in the college town of Stillwater, but exploded in Oklahoma City. Kitschy décor and a massive pool of toppings, Hideaway has locations across the metro, including one in Automobile Alley.
World Tour Phõ Lien Hoa: Thanks to an influx of Vietnamese refugees more than 40 years ago, Oklahoma City’s Asian District is home to some of the best phõ not in the country, but in the world. Phõ Lien Hoa was among the city’s first purveyors of authentic Vietnamese soup based on rich beef broth and a multitude of proteins and noodle options and is still among its most popular.
