CHASING By Kristin Luna
The best way to see Oklahoma City’s mural scene is through the eyes of a travel writer and journalist. Our city has become smitten with Kristin Luna and Scott Van Velsor (referred to as SVV) from CamelsandChocolate.com through their many visits to Oklahoma City. The couple curated a collection of some of the best murals to see in Oklahoma City, creating your guide to exploring art in Oklahoma City by car, streetcar, scooter or foot.
immediately distill its vibe based on its walls alone. Lucky for us, when we first arrived in Oklahoma City, it was immediately evident that OKC’s mural scene is absolutely exploding.
It’s no big secret that we’ve invested in street art for a while now, so much so that it’s bled into SVV’s and my personal life as we launched a mural movement in our own hometown in Manchester, Tennessee. Murals help shape the identity of a place, drive tourism, assist in economic development and convince others to invest in their city—and within moments of arriving in a new place, I can
On our first three trips to Oklahoma City, SVV and I have tried our hardest to hunt down all the art we could find, mostly by using the OKC streetcar and the rentable scooters scattered about downtown. This method is definitely doable, but I’d recommend renting a car if you also want to hit up all the murals located north of the Paseo Arts District and along Western Avenue.
Like many big cities’ art scenes, you really need a car to best explore Oklahoma City’s mural landscape. Many of the best walls are clustered on the outskirts of downtown along Western Avenue, but it’s a long street and it would take you days to try to walk from point to point in your muralchasing endeavors.

MIDTOWN + AUTOMOBILE ALLEY Midtown encompasses a large area, and several murals and pieces of art exist along the NW 9th and 10th street corridors on the border of Automobile Alley. They’re sandwiched between countless tasty restaurants, so I recommend doing your own walking food-and-art tour, with some stops at neighborhood breweries like Prairie Artisan Ales along the way. W E ST E R N AV E N U E Western Avenue runs vertically all the way through Oklahoma City, and many of the murals we found were north of downtown in the 3000 and 4000 blocks near the 38th Street Preservation neighborhood.

PLAZA DISTRICT The Plaza District is, no doubt, the place to go for art in Oklahoma City. Only have one day and want to make the best use of your time? Head straight to the Plaza District. BRICKTOWN While Bricktown is the tourist area of OKC and generally “tourist area” and innovative art do not necessarily jive, the neighborhood has embraced the use of bold, splashy art to give visitors and residents both a reason to come down to the area surrounding its ballpark. We only had time to photograph the famed octopus and the underpass beneath the railroad bridge, but there are other hidden treasures throughout Bricktown, such as a trio of small gnomes we spied hiding at the bottom of telephone poles.
PAS E O + U P TOW N 23 R D D I ST R I C T The Paseo and adjacent Uptown 23rd District is one of my favorite areas, and not just because it boasts local favorites like Tucker’s Onion Burgers and Cheever’s Cafe. I just love the buildings, the patios and the overall vibe of this uptown neighborhood.

On our visit to Oklahoma City, we found ourselves in the part of the Arts District known as Film Row. We based ourselves out of the 21c Museum Hotel OKC— what better base for exploring art than staying in a museum, right?—and loved that we were walking distance from so many of the art museums. There’s a diverse and growing mix of murals in this neighborhood, from the Paramount mural depicting music and film legends to an homage to Thunder player Steven Adams.

ADVENTURE DISTRICT In this case, the name says it all – this district is full of adventure for the whole family. From the can’tmiss National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, to the rush of live horseracing at Remington Park Racing Casino, to visiting Oklahoma City’s wildest residents at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens, there’s plenty of fun for the young and young at heart. Want to experience an up-and-coming district right in the heart of downtown? Equal parts historic and revitalized, the Arts District, including Film Row, was once home to the film distribution offices for Hollywood’s major studios. It’s now home to a mix of artistic businesses, locally-owned restaurants and more.
Oklahoma City’s foodie scene is alive and well in the Asian District, where an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the1970s created a hub now known for its Asian fusion cuisine. Here you will find some of the best Asian restaurants in OKC, including authentic Vietnamese food that rivals any found this side of the Pacific.
Fun food starts here. Enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner, as well as live music and craft cocktails, at The Jones Assembly where the Instagram-worthy patios are a destination unto themselves. Or grab a seat at Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge to experience the dynamic, eclectic cuisine of the former automobile assembly plant turned modern American restaurant.

The Milk Bottle Building, located at 2426 N. Classen Blvd. along old Route 66, was built in 1930 and is an icon of the Mother Road in OKC. BOATHOUSE DISTRICT Whether you want to train like an Olympian or just have some fun, the Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River is a hotspot for outdoor recreation. Located within walking distance of the Bricktown Entertainment District, it’s the official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for rowing and canoe/ kayak, and hosts numerous regattas throughout the year.
Get on the water with a RIVERSPORT Adventure Pass. This day pass allows you to sample all the activities offered at the Boathouse District, including rafting, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and more. The Boathouse District also offers more than13 miles of paved trails for running, walking or cycling for those who prefer to stay on land. Enjoy an aquatic adventure at the RIVERSPORT Rapids. OKC’s state-of-the-art whitewater rafting and kayaking facility offers both family fun and elite athlete training. Lower flow channels offer great family rafting and kayaking

Climb to new heights on the SandRidge Sky Trail. This 80-foot structure is the tallest adventure course of its kind in the world. With six levels of challenges, the higher you climb, the harder it gets! From the top, you can speed down your choice of four slides or free fall from the Rumble Drop. The Sky Trail also includes the SandRidge Sky Zip, a 700-foot zip line across the Oklahoma River and back.

UPTOWN Uptown is gaining quite the local reputation as a fun, easy place to dine, shop and drink. The attractions are casual, very accessible and are largely owned by local proprietors. Uptown, funk you up. The newly re-opened Tower Theatre adds live music options to the Uptown mix. Visitors get a true taste of Oklahoma culture while historic architecture from the heyday of Route 66 adds a neon glow to your adventures. Authentic Flavors Nationally recognized and locally loved, Uptown 23rd has long offered great food in a casual setting. Try The Drake for fresh seafood daily or a local favorite, Cheever’s, for classic American cuisine in a vintage flower shop. DEEP DEUCE The Deep Deuce District, located just north of Bricktown, was the heart of Oklahoma City’s AfricanAmerican neighborhood in the 1920s and ‘30s, and during that time the district was known for its incredible jazz music. Music legends Jimmy Rushing and Charlie Christian both called Deep Deuce home, as did Ralph Ellison, the author of Invisible Man. Explore Deep Deuce like a local. Deep Deuce is recapturing its glory days as a vibrant urban neighborhood. Today, Deep Deuce is a popular urban housing location and has several neighborhood hangouts like Deep Deuce Grill, Leaf + Bean, Belle Kitchen, Wheeze the Juice, and Anchor Down, which is a gourmet corn dog eatery (yes, we said gourmet) located in a shipping container. Trust us, it is worth trying. Get inspired by the art. Stop by [Artspace] at Untitled to view their many rotating exhibitions. Or if you feel inspired, sign up for one of their many creative workshops. Feel the vibe. Deep Deuce Sessions are held the last Saturday of every month from spring through the fall. Pop-up concerts are held across multiple locations. Tune into this slice of the local music scene as you stroll from venue to venue, venturing about this tiny but legendary district. BRICKTOWN Just a short walk from downtown hotels, event venues and attractions, this former warehouse district is filled with restaurants, nightlife and entertainment options. From taking a cruise along the Bricktown Canal to catching an Oklahoma City Dodger’s game at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Bricktown is a favorite destination for visitors and locals alike. Enjoy a night out on the town. Bricktown has plenty of nightlife options, including the rock-and-roll dueling pianos of Michael Murphy’s. Part concert, part comedy roast, this show is sure to have you rolling with laughter and tapping your toes to the request-driven music. Schedule a play date at Brickopolis. Brickopolis has amped up the district’s level of family-friendly fun by offering miniature golf, laser tag, arcade games and multiple dining options.
Cruise the mile-long Bricktown Canal on a Bricktown Water Taxi. This 40-minute trip is the perfect way to tour through Bricktown, from the eastern edge of downtown all the way to the northern edge of the Oklahoma River. All taxis are staffed by ambassadors that narrate points of interest along the way and give a feel for the unique history and culture of the area.
From upscale to accessible, contemporary to antique, the Western Avenue district has a little bit of everything. This district is your shopping and dining gateway to discovering local dives on Western Avenue to chic shops along Classen Curve.

Explore Classen Curve. Some of OKC’s most fashionable shops are in the Classen Curve shopping area along Western Avenue between Northwest Grand Boulevard and Classen Boulevard. National retailers include lululemon athletica, Anthropologie and West Elm. Chic shopping Classen Curve has lots of local retailers too, like Balliet’s, On a Whim and Liberté. Outside Classen Curve, there are local favorites like Weldon Jack, which is part old-school barbershop and part hip retailer with art, apparel, motorcycle gear and grooming products. Hunt for vintage and vinyl. If curated treasure hunting is more your style, visit one of Western Avenue’s many antique stores, like Antique Avenue. Western Avenue is also home to Guestroom Records, which sells new and old vinyl albums for your listening pleasure. Dine local. West on Western Avenue offers contemporary American food with favorites such as the Zucca Chips, but you’ve been warned – they are addictive. Stop in the all-new Osteria for some of OKC’s best fresh-made pasta. If you’re lucky, you might catch celebrity Chef Fabio Viviani shaking up their famous Carbonara in a Jar. STO C K YA R D S CITY Home to a number of shops specializing in all things western, you can outfit an entire ranch (cattle included) or just find a new pair of boots and enjoy a great steak in Stockyards City. It’s home to the Oklahoma National Stockyards, the world’s largest feeder and stocker cattle market, where live cattle auctions take place every Monday and Tuesday and are open to the public. Eat like a ranch hand. The oldest continually-operating restaurant in Oklahoma City and a nationally-known Stockyards City staple, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse has been visited by presidents, movie stars, pro athletes and music icons, among others. It’s worth a visit for a delicious steak, some ever-popular lamb fries and a thick slice of coconut cream pie. If you’re out and about early, they serve one of the hardiest (and best) breakfasts in town. Belly up to a 50-foot-long oaken bar. McClintock Saloon & Chop House combines an Old West saloon experience, including 170 types of whiskeys, with upscale dining, right in the heart of the district. Shop the West. Check out the vast selection of boots, hats, pearl snaps and more at Langston’s Western Wear. There’s also custom boots and more at Little Joe’s Boots and custom hats at Shorty’s Caboy Hattery. AUTOMOBILE ALLEY Located north of downtown along Broadway Avenue, the Automobile Alley district was originally home to the city’s car dealerships, a fact that is immortalized in the neon signs that still hang from its original buildings. The past and the present combine to make this district effortlessly cool with lots to offer, including some of Oklahoma City’s best shopping, dining and nightlife.
Bring your appetite to one of the local restaurants. Cultivar Mexican Kitchen delivers an innovative take on traditional Mexican fare with fresh, sustainably sourced ingredients from local farms and other trusted sources. Their guacamole is a can’t-miss. For a refined take on the urban chophouse concept, Broadway 10 Bar & Chophouse offers wood-fired meats and handcrafted cocktails. Wet your whistle with whiskey or wine. For wine lovers, Waters Edge Winery offers more than 50 different locally made wines from the world’s finest grapes. MIDTOWN On the northern edge of downtown and just west of Automobile Alley, the Midtown district connects the hustle and bustle of downtown with the stately historic neighborhoods to its north. With a mix of local restaurants, neighborhood pubs and unique shops, it’s a great place to experience the best of OKC’s recent urban renaissance. Shop local. Shopping local is easy in Midtown. Ladies can find the perfect outfit at mode or Black Scintilla. For the men, TRADE Men’s Wares has a collection of men’s clothing, bags, high-end grooming products and accessories. Nourish your mind and your stomach at Commonplace Books (pictured right). And Chirps and Cheers is one of the cutest stationery shops around with its picturesque window display and curated collection of paper and gift items. Roll a strike at Dust Bowl. This 12-lane bowling alley harkens back to the heyday of bowling with its retro-inspired décor (think wood paneling and shag carpets). Located below Fassler Hall, you can bowl a few frames and then walk upstairs to enjoy beers and brats at this German-inspired beer garden. If you enjoy the vintage-bar vibe, take a short walk and pay a visit to R&J’s Supper Club as well. Notable noshes in Midtown Two of Midtown’s most popular restaurants are making “patio season” a year-round thing. Snuggle up with friends in front of the outdoor fireplace at Barrio’s Mexican Kitchen or grab a toasty slice of pizza at The Hall’s Pizza Kitchen, but make reservations as these prime spots fill up fast.

PAS E O A R TS DISTRICT Historically, much of Oklahoma City’s art identity has been located in The Paseo Arts District, a small neighborhood just north of downtown with nearly 80 working artists and 20 studios, all of which are open the first Friday of every month—even winter months. Since the redevelopment of the urban core, though, visual arts are springing up all around downtown, both in the Arts District and in surrounding districts. Embrace your inner artist. Whether you want to add to your art collection or brush up on your own artistic skills, this district will act as your muse and provide all the inspiration you need. Rub elbows with the locals at Paseo’s bars and restaurants. Paseo is surrounded by neighborhoods on all sides, so it makes sense that this district offers some of Oklahoma City’s favorite local hangouts. Be sure to check out the Paseo Grill, Picasso Café, the Oso, Scratch and Sauced, just to name a few. There’s also lots of new additions to the food scene in Paseo, like the dairyfree, egg-free donuts from Holey Rollers Donuts and the biscuit sliders and other delectable offerings from Buttermilk. First Friday Gallery Walk happens (you guessed it) on the first Friday (6 to10 p.m.) of each month. PLAZA DISTRICT If you’re the sort that likes to check out the hip and happening, you’ll find it in the Plaza District; an enclave of locally-owned shops, neighborhood bars, quirky galleries and fun-and-funky restaurants. Named for the historic Plaza Theater (built in 1935), the area has become a hub for creativity and a magnet for local businesses. Its namesake theater is now the nationallyrenowned Lyric on the Plaza Theatre, where you can catch live performances in season. Sample some of the best craft beer in Oklahoma. Oak & Oar lives up to its slogan of “Craft Beer and Craft Fare” by keeping 36 always-rotating Oklahoma beers on tap. The Memorial recently went through a $10 million renovation upgrading the museum with state-

FLOAT ALONG THE BRICKTOWN CANAL Take a seat and enjoy the sites of the Bricktown Entertainment District on the Bricktown Water Taxi. Once on board a water taxi, you’ll be entertained as you learn all about OKC’s history and recent renaissance. Boats run continuously every 10-15 minutes and tickets are all-day passes. You can ride round trip, which takes approximately 40 minutes, or you can board and exit at any of the docking locations along the canal to get you through Bricktown and down to the Boathouse District.
RIDE THE WHEELER FERRIS WHEEL Once located at Pacific Park on the famed Santa Monica Pier, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel was purchased on eBay in 2008 and placed on the south shore of the Oklahoma River just west of downtown. Standing 100 feet high, it offers amazing views of the skyline and OKC’s famously-beautiful sunsets. While there, don’t miss the iconic “OKC” sign – perfect for capturing a great Instagram shot. There’s also plenty of hammocks to lounge in and food trucks that frequent the area.
ESCAPE TO A TROPICAL OASIS The Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory at the Myriad Botanical Gardens in downtown OKC offers a unique design that has earned global attention and praise. It is 224 feet long, 70 feet in diameter and is covered by 3,028 translucent acrylic panels. Once inside, you’ll be welcomed by two distinct climates, some 750 varieties of plants and a cascading waterfall. It’s a beautiful oasis that is a must-see next time you’re in town.

Pick summer-ripened veggies at a farmer’s market. Nothing is better than an Oklahoma-grown tomato in the summertime. Farmer’s markets pop up throughout the metro every Saturday morning all summer long. Try OSU-OKC’s farmer’s market at its Horticulture Pavilion at 400 N. Portland. Star Spangled Salute Air Show, June 1-2. This free Tinker Air Force Base tradition features the Navy’s Blue Angels and other flying acts, static displays and live entertainment. Drop a lure and cast your line. Fish the day away at the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, Hefner Lake or Route 66 Park. Get a state and city fishing license for those 16 and older at the brand-new Oklahoma Department of Wildlife and Conservation offices by the state capitol
and marvel at its new $16-million building, complete with an incredible diorama the kids will love. Take in a double feature at the drive-in. OKC’s long-standing drive-in, Winchester Drive-In, is open seven days a week and shows a double-feature every day. Summer lovin’ at its finest. OKC 4th Fest. OKC will celebrate July 4th in every neighborhood, district and suburb, but consider attending this one. Add whitewater rafting to lawn games, food trucks and, of course, fireworks, for an Independence Day celebration your family won’t forget. Cruise the River. Take an Oklahoma River Cruise and see a beautifully unique view of Oklahoma City. Choo-choo inside! Train enthusiasts will love the free Oklahoma Railway Museum. Freight cars, passenger cars and a real steam engine on display. Home runs and cracker jacks. Cheer on our Oklahoma City Dodgers and enjoy some of the best ballpark snacks around at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Get your kicks on Route 66. Stop at POP’s for delicious burgers and hundreds of different sodas. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the neon soda bottle towering outside that’s at least twice as tall as the building.

OUTDOOR GUIDE The Boathouse District has become the symbol of outdoor adventure in Oklahoma City. Located just south of Bricktown—within walking distance—it is home to OKC RIVERSPORT. In addition to the beautiful setting, including stunning architecture and a walking-runningbike path along the river, you can enjoy kayaking, zip lining, rowing and paddle boarding. There are activities for every age, and nearly any equipment you would need is available for rent—by the hour or day pass. The 11-acre RIVERSPORT Rapids opened in 2016, and Class II-IV rafting, kayaking and canoeing are now available. For family rafting children must be at least 8 years-old, and Big Water rafting is for 16 and up only. This cutting-edge facility is not just for family day; it’s also designed with the elite athlete in mind. The Boathouse District trails and river lead directly to the Lake Overholser Boathouse, with even more outdoor activities, like a climbing wall and easy access to Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge.
If skateboarding or BMX is more your thing, the metro features three skate parks, including Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park, with an 11-foot half pipe, a 10-foot oververt pocket, a street course and bowl course. Bring your own safety gear; it’s required. Lake Hefner has long been a destination for the metro’s fitness crowd, with trails for biking, running, in-line skating or a casual walk to take in a sunset. The lake features sailing and kitesurfing, as well as one of the state’s largest public golf courses. In fact, Oklahoma City has five public golf courses scattered around the city, so there is likely one close to where you are staying. Hefner is the best-known of the courses, but James E. Stewart is just three miles east of downtown, and Earlywine has two beautiful courses to choose from on the city’s southwest side. For the serious biker or runner, Oklahoma City has a network of 10 interconnected trails that lead to nearly every part of the city, a total of 80 miles of nonmotorized trails. NATURE Getting close to nature is possible even when surrounded by city. Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge on the far west side of the metro is adjacent to Lake Overholser and features 1,000 acres of hiking, fishing, bird watching and exploring. Whitetail deer, beaver, egrets, cormorants and hundreds of species of migratory birds and waterfowl move through Stinchcomb regularly. Don’t be surprised if a bobcat or coyote shows up, too. On a smaller scale, Martin Nature Park at 5000 W. Memorial—the northern edge of Oklahoma City proper—features 144 acres of grassland, trees, bird watching and smaller indigenous wildlife. Relax on the 2.5 miles of hiking trails, and be surprised by how quiet it can be in the middle of the city.

ACRES OF FUN The Myriad Gardens, our 15-acre public park in downtown, is home to beautiful plants from all over the world, and it’s also the venue for a variety of outdoor, warm weather fun. Every year on Sunday evenings, the Gardens host a Twilight Concert Series from June through August. Local and regional acts show up, and the shows are free for all ages. Bring a blanket and a picnic basket. On Wednesday evenings in June and July, you can catch a movie outdoors as well. SONIC sponsors summer movie nights with films for the whole family. If you’re not afraid of heights, head over to the Wheeler District and ride the Ferris wheel. Located on the southern bank of the Oklahoma River, the district is the newest neighborhood adjacent to the urban core. The Ferris wheel, which used to sit on the Santa Monica Pier, provides a beautiful view of downtown. Food trucks are on site every evening at Wheeler Riverfront Plaza, but feel free to pack a picnic.

FA N Z O N E NCAA WOMEN’S SOFTBALL WORLD SERIES On May 30, the NCAA Women’s Softball World Series returns to OKC. The annual event, hosted at Hall of Fame Stadium, brings thousands of visitors, fans and athletes to the city for a long weekend of fast-paced championship softball. The stadium continues to add seating, and while early games tend to be sold out well in advance, as teams lose, tickets do become available throughout the weekend. This is a topnotch, family-friendly sporting event with national media, a festival atmosphere and incredible athletic competition.
THE ENERGY Fútbol is on the rise in Oklahoma City. The world’s most popular sport continues to generate a large enthusiastic following in OKC, and the object of fan affections is Energy FC. The Energy are part of the USL, the second tier of American soccer, and as of 2013, part of the development network for MLS players. The 2019 season will be the second under head coach Steve Cooke, who led the team through a tough 2018 in which the
Energy failed to make the playoffs for only the second time. The first home match—all of which are held at Taft Stadium—is March 16 against the Las Vegas Lights. The Energy team store at 1001 N. Broadway Ave. (in Automobile Alley) is the best place to find officially licensed merchandise. T H E O KC D O D G E R S The Oklahoma City Dodgers’ opening day is April 4, 2019. The Triple-A affiliate of the L.A. Dodgers will host the San Antonio Missions. There are 70 home games for the Dodgers this season, and Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark is the home stadium. The team was 75-65 in 2018 to take the Pacific Coast League American Northern division. They lost in the first round of the PCL playoffs, and are looking forward to another great season. You can find Dodgers gear at the team store located inside the ballpark. The Brewers Union is a little off the beaten path, but having four breweries under one roof makes it worth the trip. The first class of brewers “graduated” in 2018, and the new group features Crossed Cannons, Cross Timbers, Mad Hopper and Skydance. The taproom is open Monday through Saturday and includes beers from all four brewers, allowing you to sample the city’s newest brewery startups.
COOP Ale Works is the pioneer in Oklahoma City craft brewing. The company has redefined itself over the past decade, but the core beers remain the same. The company will move to a new home in 2020—the old NE 23rd Street Armory just east of Uptown 23rd. The 87,000-square-foot building will house all of COOP’s brewing operations, a taproom, a hotel and mixed use space for retail and restaurants. The current taproom is open Wednesday through Saturday with all their core beers on draught, as well limited releases like their popular Territorial Reserve line.
Elk Valley is the newest taproom in the downtown area. Located in Midtown, Elk Valley has a rooftop patio with a tremendous view of the downtown skyline. The streetcar stops right next to the taproom, which is open seven days a week. Expect traditional styles and at least one barrel-aged brew on tap.
LOCAL FAVORITE: These guys haven’t been around long enough to form an opinion yet, so enjoy the adventure!
LOCAL FAVORITE: DNR. A Belgian-style strong dark ale, with nutty, malty, sweet character and 10 percent ABV (so be careful).

LOCAL FAVORITE: Magic Juice. A ton of citrus makes this Northeast-style double IPA very drinkable, and keeps the three different hops from making it a bitter bomb. Relatively high alcohol at 8 percent, but doesn’t mar the mouthfeel or taste.
Twisted Spike is located right next to the railroad tracks, just east of Automobile Alley. It’s a fantastic setting for the brewery. With 24 beers on tap, there is always something new to discover. You can grab a bite onsite at Calico Joe’s or venture out to one of the many nearby restaurants.

LOCAL FAVORITE: Dirty Blonde. Available all year long at their taproom, this award winning Belgian Blonde Ale is easy entry into their line up. Dirty Blonde is fruity, slightly malty with a kiss of cloves. At 6.2 percent ABV this is one that you might just keep coming back to.
VA N E SS A H O U S E Vanessa House is located just off Automobile Alley, making it convenient to the streetcar. The five owners— all friends from college—lived in a house on Vanessa Street while at the University of Oklahoma, thus the name. The taproom has 12 taps, four of which are their core beers. The other eight feature one-offers, seasonals and “whatever the guys are thinking about.” The taproom is open seven days a week, with occasional food trucks out front. LOCAL FAVORITE:

STONECLOUD
Prairie Artisan Ales is best known for producing outstanding farmhouse ales, among other creative brews, and they are the most widely distributed of OKC’s craft beers, with products on five continents. Their 8th Street location is right off historic Automobile Alley. Not only does Prairie share a common area with Magasin Table Vietnamese Restaurant and are within easy walking distance of many great restaurants.
Stonecloud features two Avery Brewing Company veterans, making some of the state’s very best beers. With a state-ofthe-art taproom and an eclectic menu combined with the beautiful, historic Sunshine Laundry building as its home, Stonecloud is one of the most popular beer meccas in the city. The taproom is open seven days a week, with three year-round beers and a dozen “rotators,” including some of the most creative sours and stouts you’re likely to find anywhere.
LOCAL FAVORITE: Prairie Bomb! This aptly named heavyweight rolls in at 13 percent ABV. Despite its perilous name, Prairie Bomb! is a dark sipper that goes down smooth and surprisingly, isn’t overly boozy tasting.
11:09. This blackberry Berliner-style kettle sour is a rush of fruit and just the right amount of pucker. It’s as delicious as it is beautiful, and if you’ve never had a Berliner, this is where you should start.

OBAR OBar is on the top floor of the Ambassador Hotel in Midtown. The excellent view of the skyline is visible from inside the bar or on the rooftop patio, and the bartenders are some of the best in town.
MARY EDDY’S Mary Eddy’s is located inside 21c Museum Hotel in the Film Row District. Warm tones and rustic materials are combined in the repurposed Ford Model T manufacturing plant to create a beautiful lounge with excellent cocktails and an impressive wine list.

The Jones Assembly is a restaurant, music venue, courtyard patio and two bars. It’s a popular destination for locals, and if the upstairs bar has available seating, make sure you grab a seat and try one of the amazing craft cocktails.
Edna’s is one of the city’s most popular and low-key famous dive bars. The dollar bills stapled to the wall have attracted attention from national magazines, and the signature drink— sort of a rite of passage for locals—is the Lunchbox, which is orange juice, beer and amaretto. Yes, it’s better than it sounds.
MCCLINTOCK SALOON AND CHOP HOUSE McClintock Saloon and Chop House is an old school saloon in Stockyards City. With one of the longest straight-line bars in Oklahoma, there is plenty of room to enjoy the extensive whiskey selection and wine list. On some nights, owner Michel Buthion will even ride a horse into the saloon. He’s our very own French cowboy.

ARTS ROUNDUP Oklahoma City’s art scene runs year-round, so depending on your preference, there are options in visual and performing arts every day. Most of the city’s art galleries and performance venues are located in or near downtown, making it easy to take in more than one artistic experience.
OKLAHOMA CITY MUSEUM OF ART The Oklahoma City Museum of Art’s Dale Chihuly glass installation is a permanent fixture on the third floor, and rotating exhibits are held throughout the year on the first floor. This year, two major shows are planned for the OKCMOA: Ansel Adams and Photographers of the West from Feb. 1 through May 26, and; Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, a collection of works from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which runs from June 22 through Sept. 22.

RED EARTH ART CENTER Red Earth Arts Center offers a cultural experience that is uniquely OKC. Red Earth strives to preserve and promote the traditions, arts and cultures of the Native Americans through education. With more than 1,000 unique pieces of art in their permanent collection and a rotation of exhibits spotlighting local, regional and national artists, Native American arts are thriving at Red Earth. Every year the Red Earth Festival is held as a celebration of all things Native American. During the festival, Native American artists and dancers from all over the country travel to participate in the annual Juried Art Market and Pow Wow. Another highlight is the parade that treks through the streets of downtown. The festival runs June 7-9.
OKLAHOMA CONTEMPORARY Oklahoma Contemporary offers what is likely the broadest array of art forms in the city. This year, Oklahoma City native and Brooklyn resident Tatyana Fazlalizadeh will present “Oklahoma is Black” through May 19. The artist went back to her childhood neighborhoods on OKC’s northeast side and interviewed the people who live there and for whom race, gender and orientation present daily challenge. Presented as video interviews, paintings and wheatpaste portraits and statements, the exhibit is timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Clara Luper’s sit-in at Katz Drug Store.

T H E N AT I O N A L COWBOY & WESTERN H E R I TAG E M U S E U M The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is home to a gorgeous collection of Western and Southwestern art, and the museum regularly has rotating installations. The work of 20th century Native American masters is on display until May 12, including the Kiowa Six and Harrison Begay. Iconic Western illustrator Tom Lovell’s art is featured in “Horseplay,” a collection of sketches and prep work that include small- and large-scale studies of this symbol of the West, on display until July 14.

EXHIBIT C Exhibit C is a gallery and retail space in Bricktown owned by the Chickasaw Nation that focuses on Native American art. The work of approximately three-dozen Native artists is regularly on display and for sale at Exhibit C. In addition to paintings and sculpture, artisan works in jewelry, pottery and fabrics are also available.
FACTORY OBSCURA Factory Obscura is Oklahoma City’s new immersive art experience, modeled on Santa Fe’s Meow Wolf. In fact, Meow Wolf is one of the partners in helping Factory Obscura develop their first permanent installation “MixTape.” Located in The Womb, the art venue developed by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, Mix-Tape will be an homage to the mix-tapes of the 1980s with “immersive artistic representations of songs” from artists who are part of the Factory Obscura collective. Phase one opens March 21, and the full installation debuts Sept. 21.

PERFORMING ARTS For performing arts, Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park is a local favorite. The company is now more than 30 years old, and this season will feature “The Comedy of Errors” and “The Book of Will,” the latter of which won the 2018 Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association Award for New Play. Many of the shows are performed on the beautiful water stage at Myriad Gardens, and the season runs June through September. Lyric Theatre is another Oklahoma City institution, and this season’s schedule includes “Bright Star” (April 3-20), “Singin’ in the Rain” (June 25-30), “Newsies” (July 9-14), and “Frost/Nixon” (Sept. 4-22). Some of the shows are at the Lyric facility in Plaza District, and large-scale performances are at the Civic Center.

EMBARK provides fixed-route public bus service seven days a week in Oklahoma City, and service Monday – Friday in Midwest City and express bus service to Norman.
