GOOD CONNECTIONS CAR Naantali is just a twenty-minute drive away from Turku. When arriving by car, take the E-18 road from Helsinki, highway 9 from Tampere, and highway 8 from Pori, which all have exits to Naantali. From May to August, there is a parking fee in Naantali. Metred car parks only accept card and mobile payments.

DRUMMER CALLS TO VESPER

THEATRE EMMA

A drummer beats out a traditional rhythm at the corner of Naantalin Kaivohuone just before 8 pm. The rhythm dates back to the 19th century. After the drummer, the sound of the evening vespers rings over the town. The evening vesper is played three times at 8 pm from the Luostarikirkko tower on 1 June–31 August: once in the direction of the Finnish President’s residence; once in the direction of the town, and once in the direction of the sea.

Theatre Emma is Finland’s most impressive outdoor theatre. It is located on Kailo Island outside Naantali Old Town, approximately 16 kilometres from Turku. A beautiful walking bridge leads to the island from the Old Town. The magnificent covered outdoor theatre is used by Moominworld in the day and is a summer theatre for adults by night.

This year, the 41st Naantali Music Festi-val will lead the Finnish summer festival season in sunny, coastal Naantali. Naantali Museum’s Hiilola property, situated in the Old Town, is home to 19th century interiors, reflecting the lifestyle of the bourgeoisie in a small town. The Sau-Kallio house, at the back of the sheltered and lush garden, gives visitors a glimpse of a humbler way of life.

KIRKKOPUISTO PARK Naantali’s Kirkkopuisto Park has been a place of recuperation for tourists and spa guests since the early 19th century. The park is a beautiful and pleasant oasis by the sea in the Old Town, and it also acts as a venue for many events.

THE ARCHIPELAGO IN THE DAYS GONE BY.

NAANTALI’S CHURCHES Naantali Church was built as a church for the Catholic Brigittine convent located in Ailostenniemi.

Now, the only remaining part of the convent forms the second largest medieval church in Finland after Turku Cathedral.

Church was completed in 1793.

In 1796, Bishop Jakob Gadolin donated the altarpiece depicting the resurrection of Christ as an acknowledgement of gratitude to the people of Velkua for their efforts to build their own church.

The building permit for the convent was signed by Christopher of Bavaria, the King of Sweden, on 23 August 1443. This date is also considered to be the founding date of Naantali Town. The convent buildings were inaugurated in 1462, and the convent was named Vallis Gratiae, the Valley of Grace.

Merimasku’s current cruciform church, built in 1726, is Finland’s 6th oldest wooden church still in use, and the only wooden church on the “seven churches route”, which is Finland’s oldest tourist route.

Naantali Church is a popular tourist attraction; however, it also functions as a Lutheran parish church and a Road Church in the summer.

In the late 18th Century, people of Velkua became tired of the long church journeys and decided to build their own church. Velkua

Rymättylä has had a parish and a church since the 14th century.

The current granite church was built in the early 16th century. The medieval style of the church has been preserved unusually well, and the church boasts objects surviving from the 14th century. The light in the church and the church’s colour scheme with its 500-year-old frescos are very special.

The Old Isotalo Croft and its outbuildings form the Kollola Local History Centre in Merimasku. The interior reveals how the last resident of the house lived. In summertime, the barn holds a special exhibition.

RYMÄTTYLÄ The Rymättylä Local History Museum gives visitors a glimpse of life in the archipelago in days gone by. The main building is from the 18th century and is surrounded by a loft, a granary and a post mill. The storehouse is home to an exhibition about seine net fishing.

SLEEPYHEAD FESTIVAL

Visit Naantali organises annually the legendary Sleepyhead Festival.

The event has become hugely popular, and the seaside, parks, streets and alleys are atmospheric and filled with market fun and happy people of all ages.

The three-day festival is the most delightful day of the summer for the whole family. On 27 July, the official Sleepyhead Day of the Year,

the person chosen as the Nation’s Official Sleepyhead is thrown into the sea at 7am sharp. The parade stirs hilarity before and after the immersion. The festival continues around the city from morning to night, and the programme includes visitors from Moominworld, the traditional children’s dressing up competition, the Sleepyhead’s Cake Competition, and of course a proper market. The evening ends

with the Sleepyhead concert. And to top it all, almost all the events are free-of-charge.

The Sleepyhead Market fills Naantali’s seaside and Old Town with a variety of market stalls and units. You will be able to buy excellent artisan products, local producers’ creations, tasty treats and many other summer and leisure items and services.

NOISE AND CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE In Naantali, the 27th of July is a day of celebration – a day when someone particularly deserving is chosen to be the hero for the day.

But being a sleepyhead used to be a lot more bothersome, because late risers were woken with noise and pelted with prickly thistles.

The first sleepyhead stories date back to the times of Christian

persecution when seven holy men are said to have slept for 200 years. The present-day sleepyhead celebrations associated with the spa tradition, which had its heyday in Naantali and elsewhere in the 19th century and many activities were organised for the spa guests.

Back then, the Sleepyhead Day was full of noise and carnival atmosphere. The participants got together at 7am, and anyone who was even

slightly late had to put up with thistle bombs being thrown at them. After that, the noisy procession went out in search of houses where the curtains were still drawn. When such a house was found, the crowd burst into song outside it.

The Sleepyhead Festival was reintroduced in the 1950s. The National Sleepyhead Day is now celebrated in Naantali, where a person who has worked for the

benefit of the town is chosen as the Sleepyhead of the Year ™. Even today, the role of the sleepyhead is not without its drawbacks. At the crack of dawn, the sleepyhead is carried to the shoreline and thrown into the sea accompanied by festivities and the cheering crowd.

KULTARANTA CASTLE WAS BUILT AS A SUMMER VILLA FOR MERCHANT ALFRED KORDELIN IN 1916. THE VILLA WAS DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT LARS SONCK. TODAY, THIS IMPRESSIVE GRANITE MANOR, LOCATED BY NAANTALINLAHTI BAY, IS UNDOUBTEDLY FINLAND’S BEST-KNOWN SUMMER RESIDENCE. KULTARANTA HAS BEEN THE SUMMER RESIDENCE OF FINNISH PRESIDENTS SINCE 1922. THUS, NAANTALI IS REFERRED TO AS THE SUMMER CAPITAL OF FINLAND.

GUIDED TOURS OF KULTARANTA GARDEN FOR INDIVIDUAL VISITORS Visitors to Kultaranta are invited to admire the formal garden surrounding the residence. The Garden Tour does not take the visitors inside the buildings. Check any exceptions to opening times at www.visitnaantali.com.

Guided garden tours for the general public are organised from Tuesday to Sunday over the summer season. The garden is closed on Mondays. The guide takes the group on a 45-minute tour through the formal garden. The distance is approximately 1.5km along an easy-to-walk gravel road with a few steps along the way.

One of the specialities of the farm is that its greenhouse vegetables grow directly in the earth. ”Our greenhouses have been built on clay fields, and the soil has been softened with manure. Food tourism is a central development object for tourism globally and local cooperation is at the heart of it. The shared food event for restaurants and cafés, Smaku, originates from Porvoo and was first organised in Naantali in summer 2019.

“Naantali has distinctive local cuisine and producers and entrepreneurs dedicated to the cause. Local food was evident in the magnificent and abundant Smaku dishes created for the event, and the food was highly praised,” applauds Laura Pulkkinen from Smaku Events Oy.

Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and other vegetables as well as summer flowers are grown in the greenhouses. Potatoes and berries grow in open air. ”Our products are sold in shops around Turku and Naantali, and many of the local restaurants are our customers. In the summer, locals and tourists stop by in the garden shop.

In addition to the farm’s own produce, the garden shop sells organic bread from Livonsaari bakery; products from Saloniemi creamery; yoghurt and ice cream from Sikka Talu sheep farm as well as honey from the bees buzzing around the organic farm. ”People are more informed about and appreciative of organic farming, and they are keen to use the products,” Tita-Marjut Salonen rejoices.

WILD AND FREE Our forests are full of food. Freegrowing plants and wild fish and game are called wild food.

Rymättylä’s Herrankukkaro is a conference and recreational centre built in an old fisherman’s homestead. For decades, its traditions have included wild food and, particularly, wild saltwater fish.

“We procure almost all our fish locally from the traditional fishermen and prepare it here by hot smoking, cold smoking, planking or grilling. The nearly forgotten European smelt, tench, freshwater bream and ide have been rediscovered and are

enjoying great popularity. We also use mushrooms, berries, herbs and game found on the island,” says Pentti-Oskari Kangas from Herrankukkaro.

At Herrankukkaro nature’s own bounty is served in the seaside lean-tos and on jetties by a fire. The fantastic experience is truly worth an award.

The summer season is important, but once you stir interest among the locals, there is demand around the year. I believe that we will manage to get more companies on board in the future and expand into the archipelago as well.”

2020 is a year of celebrations in Moominworld. Moominworld, on an island just outside Naantali Old Town, is a theme park based on Tove Jansson’s beloved stories. A Moomin day is full of all sorts of fun. SPEND THE SUMMER ON THE BEACH Swimming is one of the favourite summer activities for families and particularly children. Nunnalahti beach is a popular public beach, and Kalevanniemi and Taimo are also firm favourites. Naantali’s other public beaches are smaller. MEDIEVAL CHURCH ARCHITECTURE Where seafarers live, churches have always been an important meeting place and a safe haven. Thus, the islands have beautiful and cosy medieval churches, all worth a visit. Rymättylä’s granite church dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Merimasku’s wooden cruciform church dates back to 1726 and the church on the Palva Island in Velkua was built in 1793.

ARCHIPELAGO TRAIL The Archipelago Trail is approximately 250 kilometres long including the ferry journeys, and it travels from Turku via Kaarina, Parainen, Nauvo, Korppoo, Houtskari, Iniö, Kustavi and

Taivassalo to Naantali and back to Turku. The Small Archipelago Trail is approximately 120km long and goes from Turku via Parainen, Nauvo and Seili Island to Hanka in Rymättylä

and from there via Naantali back to Turku. You can travel the trails either clockwise or anti-clockwise.

The Archipelago Trails are open from 15 May to 30 August 2020.

Museums such as Kollola Local History Centre in Merimasku, Rymättylä Local History Museum and Röölä Herring Tradition Centre recount life in the archipelago in the bygone years.

SMALL ARCHIPELAGO TRAIL 110 KM VARIABLE TERRAIN 1–3 DAYS This longer cycle route is a magnificent way to experience the archipelago and witness the local way of life. The route leaves from the centre of Naantali and the journey (25 km) to Hanka in Rymättylä is very hilly. The journey takes you on

a traditional short ferry crossing and onboard a commuter vessel on an hour’s journey from Hanka to Nauvo (check the timetable in advance).

From Nauvo, you will be travelling along flatter terrain. A ferry from Nauvo to Parainen takes in more magnificent archipelago scenery.

The route from Parainen back to Naantali is along cycle roads next to sometimes busy traffic. Overnight accommodation can be found in Nauvo or Parainen.

www.naantali.fi/pysakointi When parking in Naantali, please use a parking disc to indicate your arrival time. Please note Naantali’s metred car parks now only accept card and mobile payments and not coins.

There is a free, non-stop bus service from the Moomin car park to the old town.

A public toilet, open year-round, can be found by the town hall; the toilet by the beach is open during the summer season.

BANK MACHINES Naantali’s bank machines are located on Tullikatu (opposite the market square) and in K-Supermarket Ellen. There are no bank machines in the old town or by the sea.

SCENIC SEASIDE WALK Come and experience Naantali’s best scenery by taking a seaside walk. The route starts at Naantali Spa and continues along the beautiful seaside to the Old Town.

Take a moment to enjoy the atmosphere in the Old Town. Carry on along Rakkaudenpolku to Kuparivuori. You can continue your walk along the route all the way to Naantali Camping or, if you so wish, return along Mannerheiminkatu or through the market square.
