Lodgingtaxdataandsurveydataonvisitorexpendituresinformestimatesoftotalspendingassociatedwithovernight visitorswhostayincommerciallodginginthestudiedregion.DRAmaintainsitsourownexpendituredistributiondatabase foreachstateweworkin,withinputfrommultiplemajorsurveyproviders.Inventoryofcampgroundsarecollectedfor commercialandpublicsites,andoccupancyismodeledbasedonarepresentativesubsetofsites.Salesattributableto travelersstayingintheirsecondhomesarecalculatedfrominventoriesfromtheUSCensusandpublicinformationon averageutilizationrates.Visitationoffriendsandrelatives(VFR)isgenerallystableacrosstimeandgeography,theprimary driverforadestinationbeingthelocalresidentpopulation.Estimatesofvisitorspendingrelatedtodaytravelcanbedriven byseveralfactors,includingproximitytonearbypopulousareas,opportunitiesforrecreationandshopping,andinventoryof lodgingoptionscomparedtosurroundingareas.Baselineestimatesfordayvisitationarecalculatedasafactorofovernight visitation,thefactorbeingderivedfromregionalresultsofnationalvisitorprofiledata.
