KARINA & RACQUEL DRIEGER
Arts enthusiasts
“There are many fun performing arts opportunities, including show choir, school musicals, and the Area Community Theater (ACT). Mitchell has an amazing community of talented people that you get really close to.”
- Racquel“I like that the community theater has plays for kids of all ages; not just adults.”

Lake and Bike Trails
“The trails around Lake Mitchell add real value to living in this community. They are fantastic for cross country skiing in the winter and for biking in the summer. The trails are not particularly difficult to ride (compared to the dangerous trails in more mountainous regions), and sections are fairly easy while other sections are more challenging. There are numerous obstacle courses constructed now and an excellent pump track. There are at least 15 miles of single-track trails total. Upper and lower loops extend most of the way around with numerous extensions. There’s a lot to explore out there and folks are increasingly driving to Mitchell to ride our trails.”

Mitchell offers our family so many amazing outdoor activities for outdoor fun and recreation. The Palace City Pedalers biking organization has created the most amazing trail system for not only mountain biking, but walking and running as well. It winds all over taking you on a great outdoor adventure around Lake Mitchell, with a pump track for challenging your bike navigation skills. If you haven’t checked it out, you won’t believe how good it is! Our children have outstanding facilities for their sports as well, including the Cadwell baseball complex, the hockey arena, Lakeview Golf Course, and a great park system just to name a few. The opportunities and the people of Mitchell can’t be beat, and that’s why our family loves it here!
JASMINE SALCIDO
Dakota Wesleyan Student
“As a family we are lucky to be part of the of Mitchell, getting to know the education system from elementary school all the way to college in the same city has been a great experience. Great programs are offered beginning in the elementary school setting, many activities in both sports and the arts are available for kids. At the high school, all of the staff and professors provide great support and attention to their students and families. Leading all the way to college, Dakota Wesleyan University is a family-oriented college where all faculty and staff take the time to get to know the students and their families. Bonds and connections are formed from meeting people who care and assist in every way to ensure a positive learning experience and future for our new generations.”
EMERSYN GUENTHNER
Cheer and Gymnastics Athlete
One of the reasons I love living in Mitchell is that I have the opportunity to practice different sports. Two new gyms; Core Athletics and Palace City All-Stars, allow me to be a part of growing gymnastics and cheer teams. Our cheer team won a bid to the National D2 Summit in our first cheer season ever! It’s pretty cool that my mom was able to start a cheer company and that my gymnastics coach was able to follow her dream and open a gymnastics gym.
BETSY RAYMOND
Library patron
“Our favorite place is the library – they bring in great presenters and have a lot of activities for kids throughout the summer. In this photo, we are with Dr. Lucie Poulet from the Kennedy Space Center, who talked about her participation in recent Mars analog missions and the challenges for growing plants in outer space.”

WORLD’S ONLY CORN PALACE
AN ANNUAL ROYAL TRANSFORMATION
This beautiful, whimsical community icon has attracted the unusual, the notable and the road-weary to Mitchell’s Main Street for more than 125 years. The World’s Only Corn Palace undergoes a majestic transformation each year, when some 325,000 colorful
ears of corn are painstakingly sliced and nailed into place. Throughout this process, which can only be described as corn-by-numbers, enormous murals appear, creating a larger-than-life work of folk art.
rowsendstudio
A local labor of love, the corn – 13 colors! – is grown and harvested by Mitchell farmers, and the murals are designed by students at Dakota Wesleyan University. It is a year-round process of removing, redesigning and recreating.
The Palace continually undergoes corn-struction projects to enhance the visitor experience inside and out. A viewing balcony, the grassy Corn Palace Plaza, selfie-worthy signage and
sculptures, the welcoming entrance and lobby with beautiful Italian-tiled pillars that evoke cobs of corn demonstrate that we are corn-mitted to our heritage. As visitors wander the main floor, they’ll find images of the Corn Palace through the years and artwork describing the many performers who have graced the Palace stage – from Lawrence Welk to Pat Benatar.
Finally, second-floor exhibit space is dedicated to Oscar Howe, the world-
renowned Native American artist who served as the longest running Corn Palace mural designer. Visitors will find images of many of the murals he created from 1948-1971. FOR

MITCHELL PREHISTORIC INDIAN VILLAGE
AN ACTIVE ARCHEOLOGY SITE
The Prehistoric Indian Village on the shores of Lake Mitchell is the only active archaeological site in South Dakota that is open to the public. Inside the Thomsen Center Archeodome, summer visitors can watch archeology students and interns uncover clues about the people who lived here 1,000 years ago.
In the Boehnen Memorial Museum, a reconstructed earthen lodge and many recovered artifacts that have been recovered on site are on display. A video showcases ongoing excavations, and the Shoppe Antiquary features the work of Native American artists.
Outside, Audrey’s Garden features the plants that villagers grew for food, medicines, ceremonies, dyes and other basic needs. A Native American sculpture, benches and interpretive signs make this a tranquil and informative setting.
For a listing of upcoming events throughout the year please visit our website.

PREMIER HUNTING
TOP RINGNECK RANGE
The Plains of eastern South Dakota are home to one of the richest ringneck pheasant populations in North America. Bird hunters from across the United States flock to the Mitchell area for pheasant hunting. Guided and youth hunts make this the place to indulge your annual hunting tradition.
Locally owned sporting goods stores cater year-round to hunting, archery
and fishing enthusiasts. In addition, Cabela’s has an 80,000-square-foot retail outlet in Mitchell that is part store, part wildlife museum, and part tourist attraction. The aquarium features living lunkers such as trout, walleye and bass. The soaring back wall is a “mountain” adorned with realistic animal mounts, from bighorn sheep and mountain goats to mountain lions, bear, moose
and elk. Many of the mounts were created by Hellman’s Taxidermy, the renowned Mitchell taxidermy shop. Local businesses roll out the red carpet each fall to welcome hunters as they make Mitchell their home away from home. Mitchell is also home to the largest membership Pheasants Forever Chapter in the country.
