VALLETTA THE CAPITAL CITY
Valletta, the capital of Malta, sits on a peninsula flanked by two magnificent harbours. Established by the Knights of the Order of St. John, the city was designed as a fortified stronghold and has preserved its impressive and distinctive fortifications to this day. From its elevated position, Valletta offers sweeping views of its strategic surroundings, including Mdina, the historic medieval city. Valletta is, since 1980, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, being the only European capital city in its entirety on this prestigious list.

St John’s Co-Cathedral
Originally built as the Conventual Church of the Order of St. John in the 16th century, this historic church was later transformed with lavish Baroque embellishments. Its interior showcases numerous artistic treasures, including two iconic canvases by Caravaggio.

National Museum of Archaeology
Malta’s prehistoric past spans back to the 7th millenium before the Christian era. This museum houses a unique collection of prehistoric artifacts, including large stone blocks adorned with intricate spiral designs, depictions of animals, and various decorative carvings. The exhibit also features the famous “Sleeping Lady” sculpture, along with other significant representations of human figures.

MUŻA – The Malta National Community Art Museum
Housed in the former Auberge of Italy, the museum features a diverse collection of art spanning from the late Medieval period to modern times. The works on display, including paintings, sculptures, and even furniture, represent both local and international artists. The exhibits are thoughtfully organized into thematic groups.

Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum
Situated in the historic Fort St. Elmo, the National War Museum highlights key periods of military history, primarily from the era of the Order of St. John through to World War II. Grand Master’s Palace and Palace Armoury
Once the residence of the Grand Master of the Order of St John, the Grand Master’s Palace has been recently restored with access now granted to extensive newly-restored areas. Several state rooms are open to the public, offering a glimpse into its rich 450-year history. Visitors can explore exquisite period furniture, artwork, and frescoes depicting pivotal scenes from the Great Siege of 1565. One of the highlights is a hall adorned with rare Gobelins tapestries, enhancing the palace’s grandeur. Entry to the State Rooms is through the impressive Armoury Hall, home to an extensive collection of armour spanning from the 16th to the late 18th century. The Grand Master’s Palace is still used ceremonially for major occasions by the President of the Republic.

Lascaris War Rooms
Explore the rock-cut headquarters of the Allied forces during World War II, later used by NATO in the Mediterranean, where the original setup remains preserved. The museum offers an in-depth look at key wartime events and Malta’s defense efforts. Nearby, visitors can also tour the Saluting Battery, the Gun Museum, and other historic sites within Valletta’s fortifications.

The Saluting Battery
Used as a platform for gun salute welcoming distinguished visitors into the Grand Harbour, this array of period cannons was also used by the British Navy to give the right time to the ships berthed in the Grand Harbour underneath. From here one can also access the Malta Time Gun Museum, housing a diverse collection of original cannons, uniforms, instruments, and equipment utilised at the Saluting Battery from 1570 to 1947. Nowadays, manned by Victorian era historical re-enactors, a gun salute is fired every day at noon and at 4pm, every day but excluding Sundays. Both the Saluting Battery and the Lascaris War Rooms are managed by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna – The Malta Heritage Trust.

Casa Rocca Piccola
This 16th-century residence, once home to a Knight and later to a Maltese noble family, is now a multi-awarded Valletta historic house museum open to the public. The house provides a fascinating glimpse into the opulent treasures of the nobility, the Order of St. John, and the British era. A highlight of the visit is the rock-cut air-raid shelter from World War II, offering a unique insight into Malta’s wartime history.

St Paul’s Shipwreck Church
One of Valletta’s most prominent churches, this historic religious building houses several notable works of art, including a 17th-century wooden statue of St. Paul. Each year on February 10th –a national holiday - the statue is carried through the streets in a grand procession during the feast of St. Paul, when the church is also beautifully adorned for the occasion commemorating the shipwreck of St Paul in Malta as narrated in the Acts of the Apostles, and the conversion of the Maltese Islands to the Christian faith.

Valletta Black Friars Experience
This experience offers a comprehensive tour of a number of edifices all linked to the Dominical religious order and dating back to the late 16th century. These include the Dominical Priory, two restored Oratories and the Basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Safe Haven and St. Dominic—one of Valletta’s most beautiful churches. Renowned for its artistic treasures and ornate decorations, the church is especially vibrant during the religious feasts in August and October. With the recently reopened Oratories and the Priory now accessible to the public, it has become a notable addition to Valletta’s religious heritage trails.

Mysterium Fidei Museum – St Catherine’s Monastery
This visit offers a rare opportunity to explore the hidden world of a cloistered community of nuns. Visitors can walk through the peaceful cloister’s underground complex, view the modest rooms used for daily activities, and see historic utensils and the community’s crypt. The experience provides a unique insight into the serene and contemplative life of the nuns, who still live and make use of the main cloister complex next door.

Basilica of Our Lady of Mt Carmel
Originally built in the 16th century, the church was reconstructed in the 20th century. Its vast interior, dominated by an awe-inspiring dome, makes it a striking landmark on Valletta’s skyline. While the new church is built in neo-classical style, it holds various artifacts and art works from the previous church, dating to the 16th and 17th centuries. The feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel is celebrated every year on the 16th of July.

Malta Postal Museum
Set in an old building, this small museum offers enthusiasts of philately the history of the postal system in Malta with unique furniture and all stamps issued in Malta. The museum also hosts frequent and freely-accessible visual arts exhibition inside its exhibition halls.

The Malta International Contemporary Arts Space - MICAS
The latest addition to Malta’s and Valletta’s rich arts and cultural spaces, the main halls of this facility stand in architectural dialogue with the Floriana fortifications within which that are located. The facilities which mainly host high calibre international artistic exhibitions also include historic chambers and exhibition areas, set on various levels within the bastions.

Garden of Rest Historic Garden
This garden is set within an early 19th century Protestant cemetery, and is perched on the Floriana bastion with an excellent view of Marsamxett Harbour. More than 500 persons were buried here, mainly English servicemen and their families, as well as some Maltese. The most famous of the latter is Mikiel Anton Vassalli, a Maltese linguist who lived in the late 18th and early 19th century, and is considered the father of the Maltese Language. The Garden is managed by local NGO Din L-Art Ħelwa.

The Manoel Theatre
Inaugurated in 1732, the Manoel Theatre serves as Malta’s National Theatre. Throughut the year it hosts a diverse program of performances, including drama, operas, concerts, and recitals.

St James Cavalier / Spazju Kreattiv
Located inside St James Cavalier, a restored 16th century fortress in the vicinity of City Gate and the Parliament, with an entrance overlooking Castille Square, Spazju Kreattiv is one of Valletta’s main artistic and cultural venues. It houses freely accessible visual arts exhibitions in its various gallery spaces, performances inside its theatre in the round, and films at the only arthouse cinema on the island.

Mediterranean Conference Centre and Sacra Infermeria
Located within the former 16th century Holy Infirmary, this complex of facilities also incorporates the largest theatre in Valletta where a variety of performances is offered throughout the year. The venue also include the augmented reality show ‘Reliving the Sacra Infermeria’. This consists of a walk through the halls of the old hospital of the Knights providing an opportunity to see through a number of scenes, through AR, that made this hospital famous.

Gardens
Upper Barrakka Gardens
Located on 16th century fortifications, these gardens provide a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour. To the left one can notice Fort Ricasoli, today used by large film productions for the construction of elaborate film sets. Bighi Hospital, the former British Naval hospital, stands on the next promontory, with Fort St Angelo and Vittoriosa next, and Senglea with its iconic vedette further in. The Grand Harbour is also home to the busy cruise liner terminal. To reach the shoreline, take the elevator, and admire closely the 16th century fortifications, or walk down from Castille Square along the panoramic road adjoining Herbert Ganado Gardens.
Lower Barrakka Gardens
From this quiet garden one can appreciate more closely the two arms of the breakwater, completed in 1910, which provide safety to the harbour. Closer still, the Siege Bell war memorial was set up to commemorate all the lives lost at sea during World War II. At its heart, the garden is dominated by monument to Sir Alexander Ball, first Civil Commissioner of Malta under the British rule, built in 1810.
Hastings and Laparelli Gardens
Walking along the bastions to the left of Valletta City Gate, one can appreciate the panoramic views of the landfront fortifications of Valletta and the Marsamxett area. Inside the ditch under City Gate bridge, the more recent Laparelli Gardens can be accessed from the Marsamxett ring road.
Floriana Gardens
Floriana, the suburb of Valletta has got several gardens within its territory. These are mainly located along the ring of fortifications that surround this suburb. Each one of them provides different panoramic views of the surrounding harbours. The Maglio (Mall) Garden, located next to the granaries, offers a green walkway towards Valletta, hosting several monuments that commemorate deserving individuals.
Argotti and St Philip Gardens
Set upon the fortifications of Floriana, these gardens offer a panoramic view of the landfront, and the surrounding towns. One can see up to the old capital city of Mdina. The Argotti Botanical Gardens overlook the even quieter St Philip Garden, both set within the outer Floriana fortifications.
Sa Maison Garden
Another iconic garden on the bastions of Floriana, laid out in different levels, offering views of the various creeks and yacht marinas within the Marsamxett Harbour and of the fortified Manoel Island.
Valletta Waterfront and Marsamxett
Ferry Promenades
The Valletta Waterfront is the best place to be for a variety of eateries, with a great sea-level panorama of the Grand Harbour. The eateries are located within the 18th century warehouses which have been well restored.
The Marsamxett side of the Valletta waterfront, mainly in the area around the ferry landing to Sliema, offers a smaller range of eateries but it is still a great place to be for another well-placed location beneath the fortifications of Valletta.

THE THREE CITIES
Vittoriosa (Il-Birgu) holds several museums, churches, and walkable winding streets inside a fortified town surrounding a main square, and having Fort St Angelo at its tip overlooking the Grand Harbour.
Senglea (L-Isla) offers rich artistic and devotional heritage. Highlights include the Oratory of the Holy Crucifix, a church rebuilt after World War II, and a charming garden situated on the bastions. Cospicua (Bormla) is built along the shores later developed into the Drydocks area. Dock No. 1, constructed in the mid-19th century, has been restored as a monument to the area’s vibrant seafaring past. The parish church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception overlooks this newly landscaped area.
The Three Cities can be accessed by boat using the harbour ferry between Valletta and Cospicua (www.vallettaferryservices.com), the Esplora Luzzu that works between both Valletta and Sliema, and Kalkara, or using one of the small traditional boats, known as Dgħajsa, that carry small groups between Valletta and Vittoriosa.

Maritime Museum

St. Joseph Oratory
Admire a rich collection of religious artifacts belonging to the Parish of St. Lawrence. Located within the attached former small church of Our Lady of Damascus, you’ll find remarkable items such as the hat and sword of Grandmaster Jean de Valette, the legendary hero of the Great Siege of 1565. The Oratory is opened by volunteers. The area around the Oratory provides access to a number of church-related heritage sites, including the Chapel of Our Lady of Damascus, the Oratory of the Holy Cross, and the Parish Church of St Laurence.

Paola Hypogeum Prehistoric site –A UNESCO World Heritage Site
This extraordinary site, carved out over 5,000 years ago by prehistoric communities, is a testament to early human ingenuity. SLIEMA AND ST. JULIAN’S: A GUIDE TO MALTA’S LIVELY COASTAL AREAS
Sliema
Originally a small 19th-century village, Sliema began to flourish after the establishment of British military residential sites in the area. It soon became a favoured destination for locals, and later, a booming tourist hub. The influx of visitors led to the construction of numerous hotels, many of which have since been modernized to include all the essential amenities.
Sliema is also well-known for its diverse dining options, offering cuisines from around the world. Additionally, it has become a premier shopping destination, featuring high-end shops, two major shopping malls, and countless restaurants and cafes to suit every taste.
St. Julian’s
St. Julian’s, another urban area that was developedfrom the original fishing harbour in the late 20th century, is a vibrant hub for tourists and locals alike. Renowned for its nightlife, particularly in the Paceville district, St. Julian’s boasts a variety of bars, restaurants, entertainment facilities and accommodations.
Historically, the area is home to Palazzo Spinola, an early 18th-century country residence, as well as nearby seaside arcades once used by local fishermen. Across the street stands a small church built by the Spinola family. Another landmark is a 19th-century summer residence, constructed by Marquis Scicluna, now part of the Dragonara Casino.

Harbour Cruises
Multiple companies operate harbour cruises departing from Sliema, including tours of Malta’s two harbours, trips around the island, and day cruises to Comino. Tickets can be purchased at the ferry terminal, with several departure times available.
Ferry to Valletta
A quick and scenic way to reach Valletta is via ferry. This trip can be combined with a short bus ride or a walk around Valletta’s fortifications to the opposite Grand Harbour side of the city, where another ferry takes you to the historic Three Cities.

Swimming
The coastline around Sliema and St. Julian’s is mostly rocky, making it a favourite swimming spot for families and children. The area has three Blue Flag awarded beaches, consisting of the sandy beach at St George’s Bay, the Med-Bar Reef Club within the Dragonara complex, and the rocky Fond Għadir beach on the southern end of the Sliema promenade. Both Sliema and St. Julian’s offer a mix of modern conveniences, historical charm, and diverse activities, making them must-visit destinations in Malta.

Sliema is one of Malta’s top destinations for shopping, with high-end stores, two shopping malls, and a wide range of eateries nearby. Most of the shopping hotspots are found around the ferries
area on the Marsaxmett side, as well as along the promenade from Sliema to St Julian’s.

NORTH-WEST OF MALTA
The north-west of Malta is rich in natural, historical, and entertainment areas. This area features sandy and rocky beaches, countryside walks, nature reserves, and entertainment areas for the whole family.
Mellieħa
Perched on a hilltop and surrounded by picturesque countryside and pristine beaches, Mellieħa is a charming village offering a historical core together with a range of hotels and restaurants. It is famous for the Mellieħa Sanctuary, a devotional site housing a medieval image of Our Lady. Tradition holds this icon to have been painted by St. Luke, while historical research indicates the 12th century as a more likely origin but possibly with much older devotional practices linked to the site. Visitors can explore the beautifully adorned church and its collection of votive offerings, as well as a brand new museum housed inside the former Pilgrims’ Lodge dating back several centuries. The landmark parish church, dedicated to the Birth of Our Lady, was completed at the end of the 19th century and is constructed entirely of stone quarried from the north of the island.
Mosta
Mosta is dominated by the iconic Mosta Rotunda, renowned for its massive dome and richly embellished interior. During World War II, a bomb pierced the dome during a service attended by approximately 200 parishioners but miraculously did not explode. Natural Environment
Dwejra Bay
Dwejra Bay is a treasure trove of geological and natural wonders. It features the remarkable Inland Sea, a tranquil lagoon connected to the open sea through a natural rock fissure. The area is home to the small church dedicated to St. Anne, rugged coastlines, and the dramatic Fungus Rock, an iconic and inaccessible islet. The Azure Window, another remarkable geological formation which has featured in several films, was swept away by a storm in 2017.
Wied il-Għasri
This secluded inlet, with its fjord-like scenery, boasts a small pebbly beach that offers a tranquil escape. The area is a favourite for trekkers, thanks to its striking natural beauty.
Wied il-Lunżjata
Located near Victoria, this lush and well-cultivated valley provides a serene retreat where visitors can enjoy the soothing sounds of nature. The area is also known for its charming small church and unique architectural features.

St. Mary’s Tower and Battery

Beaches
Generally speaking, Malta’s coastline is rocky and steep on the south side, while it is rocky and low lying on the north and eastern side. Most of the sandy beaches are situated either on the north western side of Malta or in Gozo. Malta’s beaches are small in size, with the largest shoreline just over 500 metres. Boat trips
Leisure trips around the coast are usually boarded from the Strand in Sliema, from Buġibba and St Paul’s Bay area, from Marsaxlokk to St Peter’s Pool, and from Wied iż-Żurrieq for a tour of the caves. Additionally, several leisure boats operate from Għadira Bay and Ċirkewwa, as well as from Mġarr, Xlendi, Dwejra, and Ħondoq irRummien in Gozo, although these may vary seasonally and depend on the weather. It is always best to confirm whether trips are working on the day with the operators beforehand.

Boat trips to Comino are provided by various operators departing from Malta and Gozo, with information easily available on their websites. The main departure points in Malta are Ċirkewwa, Marfa, St. Paul’s Bay and Sliema, while in Gozo all trips leave from Mġarr Harbour. Eating and drinking
Valletta and all the tourist areas offer a wide selection of quality restaurants to suit the budget-conscious and the gourmand alike. In fish restaurants, the menu may vary according to season and the day’s catch. It is recommended to ask for fresh fish which may also be on display. To experience traditional Maltese home-cooking, try dining at the more popular family restaurants specialising in local fare.

Rabbit dishes: stewed or fried
Braġjoli: beef-olives filled with a mash of spiced Maltese sausage and eggs
Timpana: macaroni pie
Lampuki: dorado fish, mostly in season from mid-August onwards Swordfish and Tuna: with tomato, olive and caper sauce
A variety of popular home-made soups and pasta dishes.
Stuffed marrows: oven baked and traditionally served with potatoes.
Ġbejniet: traditional cheeslets made from goat or sheep’s milk, in three types – fresh, dried or peppered.
A range of sweet desserts, including several almond-based varieties, nougat, honey rings, and date-filled pastry known as imqaret.
Pastizzi and qassatat are the local favourite snack, traditionally with cheese or pea filling.
Ftira: Round, leavened bread with a variety of fillings, often with tuna, onion capers and olives. In Gozo, the ftira is more pizza-like with thin potato slices and a variety of fillings. Included in the UNESCO Intangible World Heritage List since 2020.

Public transport services run regularly during the day, and night service is also available on select routes. A range of travel cards ideal for visitors are also available and can be bought from the Malta Public Transport kiosks at the Malta International Airport (Arrivals Hall) and the Valletta Bus Terminus.
Malta: The main bus terminus in Valletta provides services to all towns and villages at frequent intervals. Direct bus services are available from various tourist areas to Rabat, Marsaxlokk, Ċirkewwa ferry, Qawra and Buġibba, as well as between various tourist areas. Gozo: A regular bus service is provided from Mġarr Harbour to the Victoria (Rabat) terminus, from where it is possible to reach most outlying villages also using public transport. Bus cards are valid for both Malta and Gozo public transport.
