Follow the Trails
Take a gentle walk around valleys of clear streams, spinneys of beech and perfectly preserved stonebuilt towns. Miles of bridle path also make the Wolds popular with horse riders, and increasingly mountain bikers who relish the climbs and descents that are unique to this part of the county. Enjoy fine views from elevated vantage points, especially at Wolds Top, just north of Normanby-le-Wold.
Eastern Promise... Inland, stretching beyond the city of Lincoln, the county has an astonishing variety of landscapes and characters. To the north is a peaceful rural landscape dotted with market towns, and the beautiful rolling limestone of the Wolds – perfect walking country. To the south, the Vales stretch out with green fields and stone-built towns, and the Fens are criss-crossed with waterways that are paradise for boaters and anglers.
The epic Viking Way Runs the length of Lincolnshire, starting on the banks of the Humber, passing through the Wolds, and eventually ending at Rutland Water some 147 miles later.
Essential Experiences Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse in Northern Lincolnshire are among the finest in England and well worth a visit. Once you've explored the beautiful architectural ruins why not take a trip to nearby St Peter's Church and unlock the Buried Lives Exhibit?
