Set in 4200 acres of open countryside, Rutland Water lies at the very heart of the county and is as spectacular in beauty as it is in size. Created in the 1970’s to meet an ever increasing demand for water, nowadays it’s widely regarded as a leading centre for water and land based leisure activities and has year round appeal for fishermen, cyclists, sailors and bird watchers. Whether you bring the family, come on your own, or in a group, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Convenient cafes and ice cream kiosks are dotted around the shore and the Tourist Information Centre at Sykes Lane, Empingham can advise you on how to get the most out of this magnificent place.

“Don’t miss out on visiting the jewel in our crown – Rutland Water. There’s so much to do there from cycling and walking to fishing, golf or sailing. Another must see is Lyndon Nature Reserve; summer home to the Osprey. You can learn such a lot from the knowledgeable staff and you can even watch the Osprey via live camera feed. My favourite season in Rutland has to be Spring; the sight of lambs bouncing round the fields, hedgerows beginning to bud, birds singing in the trees and the smell of freshly cut grass. It’s also exciting too, as we look forward to the new Summer season and preparing for the many visitors who come to the county. The thing I love most about Rutland is that it has so much to offer everyone of all ages and the food in particular is outstanding. Visit Hambleton Bakery for freshly made breads, our own Grainstore Brewery for a local brew and Northfield Farm for the finest local meats. When I describe Rutland to friends and family, quintessentially English springs to mind – peace and tranquillity, breathtaking countryside and beautiful stone villages. It’s the perfect antidote for today’s stressful modern lifestyles”.

Autumn in Rutland

Walking

Rutland is a wonderful place for walking all year round and each season brings its own palette of colours to the rolling countryside. The landscape in spring is spectacular - lush green fields and bright yellow daffodils along with lots of spring lambs of course, all create the idyllic rural picture. The arrival of summer brings wonderfully long days perfect for getting out and exploring the countryside, whilst autumn’s reds and golds signal the coming of the cooler weather and create some of the most captivating countryside scenes. Finally winter takes its turn, transforming the county into a picturesque winter wonderland with stunningly crisp, frosty scenes.

Around Rutland Water The 25 mile shoreline offers generally level tracks suitable for most levels of walking ability. It is possible to walk the whole way around the shoreline but most visitors are more comfortable negotiating a shorter section of track. There are convenient cafes and kiosks at the main sites (Sykes Lane, Normanton, Whitwell and Barnsdale) and plenty of parking available at all sites.

Cycling

Walking Trails A range of walking trails are available locally and are a pleasant way to explore the countryside. Titles include the ‘Oakham Heritage Trail’ – a great introduction to the key places of interest around the county town and ‘Rutland Heritage Trails’ – a range of enjoyable walks through some of the county’s pretty villages.

One of the most exhilarating ways to explore Rutland is by bike, and there are routes to suit everyone, whether you cycle seriously or purely for pleasure. The extensive countryside tracks has led to the county becoming widely known as a bike friendly destination.

Rutland has an historic association with horses; Rutland County Museum was once the home of the Rutland Fencible Cavalry’s Riding School – a yeomanry regiment of the British Army, and the county is home to the 350 year old Cottesmore Hunt. The stunning landscapes and good off road access means riding is a very popular past time here. As one of England’s prettiest rural counties, there really is no better place to bring your treasured equine for a change of scenery and some r&r. There’s fantastic hacking through some of the most beautiful countryside you’ll have ever seen and village pubs aplenty to refuel during your adventure. Enjoy some of the best views of Rutland and Rutland Water from the county’s quality golf courses. They’ll certainly challenge your game, and there’s plenty of choice when it comes to the type of course to play. Greetham Valley offers 3 challenging courses to choose from in addition to a floodlit driving range. The two 18 hole courses (Lakes and Valley’s) provide a stern test, whilst the 9 hole Par 3 is perfect for honing your short game. With spectacular views across Rutland Water, the recently extended and well established Rutland Water Gold Club now boasts an 18 hole layout, 9 hole Par 3 and a well stocked golf shop. Rutland County Golf Club, near the A1, offers an 18 hole links-style golf course in addition to a full range of practice and training facilities. Elsewhere, Luffenham Heath is widely known as one of the finest and most challenging heathland courses in the Midlands. In addition to the fine golf on offer, nature flourishes here, with the whole golf course being declared a site of special scientific interest. North Luffenham Golf Club is small and friendly, measuring just under 6000 yards.

Gardening; it is one of the nation’s favourite ways to spend an afternoon – and in Rutland, this passion for horticulture is everywhere you look.

In the towns, hanging baskets and pretty patio boxes show off beautiful seasonal blooms, carefully tended by the local Britain in Bloom volunteers, winners of a gold East Midlands in Bloom Champions of Champions award. Tucked away in the small village of Wing you’ll find the delightfully different Art De Jardin - a garden showcase of contemporary outdoor sculpture teamed with expertly landscaped grounds, providing both inspiration and relaxation in equal measure.

“My perfect day in Rutland would have to begin with a morning learning to fly fish out on a boat with Rob Waddington of Rutland Water Fly Fishing who never seems to stop laughing - that would set me up for the day. This would be followed by a delicious lunch at Barnsdale Lodge, because it’s a lovely setting and I have never been disappointed with a meal there. Finally, depending on how much I consumed for lunch I would spend the afternoon cycling round Rutland Water or walking through Exton Park. A big part of Rutland’s charm is the rural feel and less frantic way of life but the thing I like most about Rutland is its rurality – you are never more than a stones throw from being off the beaten track. Also, people in Rutland are very genuine and from my experience you don’t get that from many other places in the UK”.

Your guide to quality When you decide to visit Rutland, you’ll want to be assured that the accommodation you’ve chosen to stay in meets the standards you would expect. That’s why, in this guide, you’ll only find members of the two nationally recognised quality assurance schemes – The AA and Quality in Tourism. These schemes assess accommodation providers against a rigorous set of national criteria and inspect each property every year to ensure standards are being maintained.

Star Ratings

Quality assured accommodation is graded with stars, except the AA assessed camping and caravanning sites which are graded with pennants. Star ratings are designed to meet the expectations of consumers with regards to quality. Generally, a one star rating would indicate simple, practical no frills accommodation whereas at the other end of the scale a five star rating would indicate exceptional quality with a degree of luxury..

Awaiting Grading

Accommodation Ratings made easy ★ Simple, practical, no frills ★★ Well presented and well run ★★★ Good level of quality and comfort ★★★★ Excellent service throughout ★★★★★ Exceptional with a degree of luxury

A guide to the awards AA Food Rosettes

If you find this next to a property listing, it means that the property has applied to participate in either The AA or Quality in Tourism scheme and is waiting to be assessed.

Holders of AA rosettes demonstrate a high standard of cooking which sets them apart from other restaurants in their area. They create dishes using quality local ingredients put together with care understanding and skill.

Walkers, Cyclists, Pets & Families Welcome

Awards For Hotels, Guest Accommodation and Self-Catering properties. Highly sought after, these awards are given to an establishment in addition to the star rating, and reflect the highest standards of quality in bathrooms, bedrooms and service.

AA & Quality in Tourism Breakfast Awards Properties with these awards offer their guests quality and choice at breakfast combined with service and hospitality which exceeds their star rating.

AA Dinner Awards The AA pie symbol indicates a very special dinner with an emphasis on freshly prepared local ingredients.

Properties with the any of the Welcome logos offer facilities to meet the needs of these visitors e.g. drying facilities for clothes and secure areas for bicycles.

The National Accessible Scheme Establishments taking part in the National Accessible Scheme have been assessed to ensure guests with hearing, mobility or visual impairment will have a comfortable stay.

Prices & Booking Prices in this guide are generally on a per room per night basis. Please be aware that prices can vary depending on season, view from room, numbers of occupants in a room or room facilities, so please check with your chosen provider to obtain a total price before confirming your booking. To confirm your room, book online at www. discover-rutland.co.uk or, if the accommodation is not bookable online, contact your chosen establishment directly.
