Insider Tip:
WHITEWATER RAFTING
From snowmelt in spring to the colorful days of fall, adventure-seekers flock to the Hudson and Rivers, two distinct waterways whose quick-moving waters provide an exhilarating challenge with conditions ranging from easy and relaxing to difficult and raging. Highly experienced rafting companies and certified guides on both rivers double as narrators with knowledge of local history and geography.
The Hudson River offers some of the most rip-roaring rafting in the country. Conquering “The Mighty Hudson” requires rafters to battle cold, churning Class III to Class V rapids as the Hudson swells each spring with the snowmelt. When summer heat lowers the water to more manageable levels, it becomes one of the best natural attractions in the southern Adirondacks.
The Sacandaga River offers great whitewater for beginners. Slow-flowing, dam-released Class I and Class II rapids ensure safe, family-friendly adventure. Traverse this four-mile stretch just above the confluence of the Hudson and Sacandaga that holds swirling eddies and gentle pools for a lazier river ride.
TUBING
Whitewater tubing is an extreme excursion for adept swimmers who want to ride the rapids of the Sacandaga River with Sacandaga Outdoor Center.
Lazy river tubing is a relaxing alternative for those who prefer to drift slowly on gentle currents and stop at a sandbar for a quick swim. Float down the Hudson River out of Lake Luzerne with Adirondack Adventure Center and Tubby Tubes River Co. Beaver Brook Outfitters also offers outings along a stretch of the Hudson that winds through North Creek.
WATER CALLING the is
When the summer sun is high in the sky, out on the water is the place to be. Take it slow and soak up the sights, or go full-throttle with the wind and spray in your hair. Either way—just dive in!
Wakeboards, water skis, and tubing. Hang on tight as the boat carves across the water’s surface, waves splashing as you shout and giggle.
Jet skis. Cruise past the luxury properties at the water’s edge, or hit crazy speeds on the open water— maybe even grab a little air.
Parasailing. Feel like you’re flying above the sparkling blue water with a bird’s eye view of the surrounding Adirondack Mountains.
Paddling. Strap on a lifejacket to explore coves, river bends, and islands by canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard.
Private boat tours. Book a guided day of fishing, luxury sightseeing, tubing, and exclusive access to hidden gems like cliff jumping and wildlife spots.
Swimming. Opt for a sandy beach, a swimming hole bordered by sun-warmed rocks, or ask a local guide for the area’s best cliff-jumping spots.
Boat rentals. Rent your own watercraft at one of the area’s numerous marinas and be the captain of your own lake adventure.
Sail boats. Plan a day of nautical luxury basking in breezes on the open water. Pack a bathing suit and a picnic for the full experience!

PAST & PRESENT
With more than 400 years of years of rugged history, the Lake George Area is rich in historical landmarks, societies, and museums that chronicle the fascinating stories illustrating how the region played a critical role in the birth and development of our nation.
Fort William Henry Museum and Lake George Battlefield Park stand among hundreds of landmarks throughout the area bringing to life the French and Indian War, which raged on the shores of Lake George in 1755.
Several Warren County towns including Chester served as abolitionist strongholds and key stops on the Underground Railroad.
The Chapman Museum in Glens Falls houses more than 3,000 images by notable Adirondack photographer and guidebook author Seneca Ray Stoddard, who documented life, industry and landscapes in the area more than 150 years ago.
Through the 1800s, steamboats and railroads made it easier for wealthy city dwellers to seek respite in the Adirondacks at luxury hotels like The Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing and lavish, private great camps. By 1850, tourism became the leading industry in the Lake George Area.
Vacation Vernacular
The word “vacation,” a quintessential American term, was invented right here in the Adirondacks. As New York City became stifling in the summer heat, those who could afford to would “vacate” the city in favor of fresh Adirondack air up north. Thus, the “Original Vacation” was born.
Gateway to Independence
Considered “The Gateway to Independence,” Warren County is celebrating its role in the Revolutionary War with events and celebrations marking the 250th Anniversary.
