In the spring and summer of 1862, more than 10,000 enslaved people crossed the Rappahannock River to freedom. The Trail to Freedom retraces their route. Many enslaved people saw the arrival of the Union army in nearby Stafford as a chance for freedom. During the Union occupation that spring and summer, enslaved people from the region streamed behind Union lines. It was likely the largest single exodus of enslaved people in America up to that time. Start exploring the Trail to Freedom with the John Washington Walking Tour, which begins in Fredericksburg and is followed by a driving tour. It also features stops on both sides of the Rappahannock River as it continues to Stafford County.

Robert Christian (pictured above) remembers the hostility he faced as a Black student attending Maury School when it was first desegregated:
“I don’t think I’ll ever forget when I desegregated Maury School. I can remember my mother, of course, was standing out on the front. I remember that photographer when he turned and looked a little bit over my shoulder. I could see him.”
- Robert Christian, interview conducted by Chris Williams.
Fredericksburg’s Civil Rights Trail has two parts. Part 1 is a 2.6 mile walking tour through Fredericksburg’s historic downtown district that starts at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center. Most visitors will want to drive sections of Part 2 which starts on the University of Mary Washington’s campus and includes stops at Shiloh Cemetery and the Dorothy Hart Community Center. Part 2 is .5 of a mile walking on campus and 1.9 miles long.
“Fredericksburg was still segregated, but because of the fact that the Civil Rights Movement had begun, churches in this area, white churches, in particular, wanted to make sure that the people here tried to bring forth the best united Christian front that they could. They helped us in trying to establish a means of improving conditions here, segregation and otherwise. It wasn’t just a church because some of the members of Mary Washington College were part of it.”
- Reverend Lawrence A. Davies, interview conducted by Chris Williams.
“When I gave the Commencement Speech over there (UMW) in 2006, I recalled how I would walk-by or drive-by admiring the beautiful campus but no one said it was open for me to attend because of the color of my skin. It was for whites only, and white girls only at the time.”
- Ambassador Pamela Bridgewater, interview conducted by Chris Williams.
“I remember very vividly hearing my grandfather and grandmother and people saying, “Make sure you help people read and write, but make sure they’re getting the money to pay that poll tax.”
- Ambassador Pamela Bridgewater, interview conducted by Chris Williams.
“Anyone who said he wasn’t afraid during the Civil Rights movement was either a liar or without imagination. I was scared all the time. My hands didn’t shake but inside I was shaking.”
- Dr. James Farmer, Co-Founder and Director of the Congress for Racial Equality (CORE), Distinguished Professor of History and American Studies at Mary Washington College, now University of Mary Washington.
“Realizing that patriotism and loyalty should be paramount in the breast of all American citizens at this time, and feeling (although a Negro) that loyalty for my country and the desire to serve her in this critical period, I am herewith offering my services for the Army Medical Corps should there be a need for a Negro physician for that branch of the service.”

In the summer, you’ll watch the eagles and herons dive for fish in the Rappahannock River. Summer visitors find a multitude of water sports and outdoor recreation. Fall is marked by the Virginia foliage bursting with sunset hues and the temperature allows for serene trail walks. During the winter, the outdoors turns into downtown strolls to take in the history and shops.
This 860-acre natural area, centered around a 160-acre reservoir, is a serene setting for canoeing, fishing, biking, hiking, and picnicking. In fact, the water is so clean here that it serves the residents of Fredericksburg with drinking water. It also features a nature center, orienteering course, more than 4 miles of hiking trails, 11 miles of biking trails, grills, kayak and canoe rentals, as well as jon boats.

There are many ways to de-stress at our parks - from playing in our new “smart park” (Riverfront Park), reading a book on a shaded bench, and playing a sports activity for a little exercise.
The Rappahannock River has many stories to tell - it has been crossed by soldiers of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars alike and followed by enslaved people escaping to freedom. And in modern times, it is used for fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, and memorymaking of all sorts. Equipment purchases and rentals are found on site at Motts Run as well as the Virginia Outdoor Center and River Rock Outfitter.
Located in Downtown Fredericksburg, the Virginia Outdoor Center provides river trips by canoe, kayak, tube and stand up paddle board. They also provide outdoor instruction for all ages in white water essentials, paddle boarding, rock climbing, & more.
