In 1928, George Whitney placed a scoop of vanilla ice cream between two large oldfashioned oatmeal cookies and then dipped the sandwich into dark chocolate. Jelly Belly Art was the brainchild of San Francisco artist Peter Rocha in 1982. After President Reagan publicly expressed his fondness for Jelly Belly beans, artist Peter Rocha tried some himself. He was immediately impressed with the range and brilliance of the colors of the beans. The first portrait, appropriately of President Reagan, took Rocha over six months to complete. The Jelly Belly Candy Company has worked with various artists to create the Jelly Belly art over the years, most recently Northern California artist Kristen Cumings. Each piece stands approximately fourfeet-by-six-feet-tall and is made with 9,000-14,000 Jelly Belly jelly beans. Large scale portraits of famous personalities and classic Americana subjects, all made in mosaics of thousands of Jelly Belly jelly beans, can be seen on display at the Fairfield factory.

(pronounced SUE-soon) means “west wind” in Patwin.
Long before the Spanish and other Europeans arrived in what would later become California, the area today known as Solano County was home to indigenous people called the Patwin (which means “people”) or Southern Wintun. In fact, Solano County is named for the Patwin leader Sina or Sem Yeto. Spanish missionaries used the non-Patwin name “Solano” to identify him. Established research shows the Patwin occupied all of Solano County to the Bay.
The Patwin were conscientious stewards of the abundant natural resources offered by the land and water surrounding them. They hunted wild game, fished for salmon in the river, and gathered edible plant foods such as acorns. They created fine baskets, nets, boats, and shelters from willow and other native plants and grasses.
Today, more than 200 years after the first Europeans arrived in California, three Patwin tribes remain – the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, Kletsel Dehe Band of Wintun Indians, and Cachil Dehe Band of Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian Community. The Native American Heritage Commission, a state agency that works with tribal governments
on cultural resource protection, has recognized Yocha Dehe as the Most Likely Descendant of the Patwin people buried in Solano County. The tribe devotes significant resources to protecting the sacred burial sites within the County.
Today, Yocha Dehe has a growing agricultural presence. With a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility, the tribe farms more than a dozen crops, including grapes and olives. Under its Séka Hills brand, the tribe produces multiple-award-winning wines and olive oils.
