Why Do We Call It Muletown?

Columbia, Tennessee, is often referred to as "Muletown" because of its mule heritage and its longstanding annual event called Mule Day. The nickname originates from the significant role that mules played in the town's agricultural and economic development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And the annual event, Mule Day, has roots dating back to the 1840s when the town established "Breeder's Day." This event was initially focused on showcasing and trading mules. In 1840, the first recorded mule show in Columbia took place, and it eventually merged with Breeder's Day. Over the years, the celebration continued to grow, and the term "Mule Day" gradually became more widely used. The festival has evolved into a multi-day event featuring a parade, mule shows, competitions, and other festivities.

Today, the nickname “Muletown” is often used as a term of endearment and as a nod to the town's history and to Mule Day.
