THE

MAKING OF NIGEL C GULL

Meet Nigel, our celebrity seagull. What a feather in our cap he has turned out to be.

The star of stage, screen, and skies (obviously!) has gathered a huge flock of fans since he made his first appearance on our television screens in May 2022.

The beloved bird was painstakingly created by award-winning puppeteer Andy Heath who has worked with the BBC, Lucas Films, Disney, and The Jim Henson Companywhich of course gave us The Muppets.

Nigel’s voice needed to be Northern, memorable, and full of character so who better than husky comedian Johnny Vegas! The campaign and character were conceptualised by Creature, directed by Stephen Pipe and produced with Tantrum.

Here, we give you a fascinating behind-thescenes insight into how Nigel took flight…

u Pencil to paper – Nigel begins to come to life in these very early sketches. Already he’s a seagull with attitude!

u Nigel takes on a whole new dimension as he waits in the wings for his wings, ready to fly the nest.

u A bird needs a beanie hat – but should it be green, blue, or brown? The finer details take a lot of consideration.

6 visitblackpool.com
01 03 02

u The finishing touches – the finest of fur, the fluffiest of feathers, and a cocoa coloured Shetland wool hat. Only the best for our seagull!

u ‘Lights… camera… action… I’m ready for my close-up now!’

u Introducing to the great British public… our very own Nigel C Gull, resplendent and ready to ruffle a few feathers. It could only happen in Blackpool!

BIRD’S EYE VIEW

“You really need to spread your wings when you come to Blackpool. Take it from one who knows these things.

“The sky’s the limit when you’re a seagull like me. I’m lucky enough to get a bird’s eye view of the resort every single day –and you can too if you know the right places to go.

“So, why not let me take you on a flight of fancy…”

Towering Experience

Experience breath-taking panoramic views with a trip 380ft into the sky to The Blackpool Tower Eye.

Walk out (if you dare!) onto the spectacular SkyWalk – a five-centimetre thick glass platform, where you can gaze across the Irish Sea and at the famous Promenade below you. From this unique vantage point you’ll be able to see the North West of England spread out before you, from Bowland up to the Lake District and, on a clear day, down to Liverpool and across to the Isle of Man.

Sip And Sigh!

The sky really is the limit in the tranquil setting of Bar 380 at the very top of The Blackpool Tower.

Take in the stunning vista with a cocktail, mocktail, beer or soft drink. It’s the only bar in Blackpool where you can see the entire Fylde coastline and beyond.

Magic Circle

Sit back and take to the skies on the most striking feature on Blackpool’s Central PierThe Big Wheel.

Standing 108ft high, this giant Ferris wheel is an iconic part of the resort’s skyline offering amazing views of the Irish Sea, the Golden Mile and The Blackpool Tower and is particularly impressive when illuminated against the night sky with brightly coloured lights.

It has been named in the past as one of the resort’s 10 most Instagram worthy attractions.

Sky Bound

If you want to wing it like Nigel, you might want to give the SkyCoaster on South Pier a whirl!

Perched on the southern edge of the pier, 30 feet above the sea, it is said to simulate the flight of a seagull.

Highflyers are winched up over the bustling amusements and then soar above the many onlookers below and out over the edge of the pier. Not one for the faint-hearted!

Hitting The High Ropes

Your feet won’t touch the ground at the High Ropes Course at award-winning Stanley Park – or at least they shouldn’t do!

You’ll start off making your way through a range of wobbly obstacles on the low ropes to test your balance and confidence. Then you’ll move up a level to an 8m high platform before taking on the challenge of the high ropes including moving tyres, swings and bouncing bridges.

Clip in, hold on and enjoy the ride. How high and how far can you go?

The BIG One!

If, like Nigel, you haven’t yet been on The Big One, make sure you beat him to it!

Hit the heady heights on the UK’s tallest roller coaster and soar like a seagull.

The Big One was constructed in 1994 and stands 235ft above Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The three-minute ride hits speeds of 85mph so if you choose to wear a hat, you might want to hang on to it.

visitblackpool.com 9

ONLY IN BLACKPOOL

If you’re a lover of all things unique, there’s no better place to explore than the UK’s favourite seaside resort.

From a heart-thumping amusement park ride to a jaw-dropping gigantic mirror ball, there are plenty of oneof-a-kind experiences to wow you. Here we highlight just a few of them.

As our feathered friend Nigel C Gull says in his television ad ‘Only in Blackpool’ and he’s certainly no bird-brain!

Let’s Twist Again

When it opened at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 2018, ICON was the UK’s first and only double launch rollercoaster.

When the exhilarating high speed ride was adapted to twist and spin freely three years later, it was a first in Europe.

ICON launches riders with the same acceleration as a Formula One car, before hitting a second launch, powering riders high above the country’s most ride intensive amusement park. Do you dare to be twisted?!

Funny Business

You’re having a laugh… or you will be when you check out these mega mirth mustsees!

u Be tickled pink by the bronze bust of Professor Chucklebutty himself, Sir Ken Dodd OBE at The Grand Theatre. Made by Graham Ibbeson – known as the People’s Sculptor for his previous works including Les Dawson, Laurel and Hardy and Morecambe and Wise (see below) - Doddy and his beloved Diddyman, Dicky Mint, take pride of place in the Dress Circle.

Vanilla Ice

There’s nothing vanilla about Blackpool… unless you pay a visit to Notarianni’s. The iconic ice cream parlour in South Shore serves only one flavour and there’s a very special reason why.

The Notarianni family have been making and serving ice cream in Blackpool since 1928. Their vanilla ice cream is made fresh every day from locally-sourced ingredients to the same secretly guarded recipe that has been passed down through four generations of the family.

Start your stroll at North Pier – which celebrates its 160th birthday this year and is the oldest of the three. Then, at your leisure, walk the Golden Mile towards Central Pier, finishing at South Pier. The walk from North to South is around 1.6miles and will take around 35 minutes (excluding the piers). At which point, you’ve earned a well-deserved sit down!

Greatest Show On Earth

Still tripping the lights fantastic, we might be biased, but we believe there’s nothing else on earth like Blackpool Illuminations.

The pure pleasure of clean, soft sand between your tootsies cannot be overemphasised! Our beaches have won awards and, when you’re sat gazing out across the Irish Sea, it’s easy to see why.

Laugh Out Loud!

Warning: Seagull Joke Coming Up

Question: Why do seagulls fly over the sea?

Answer: Because if they flew over the bay, they’d be called bagels!

If humour (however bad) rather than culture is more your thing, spend some time on the outdoor Comedy Carpet in front of The Blackpool Tower. It celebrates all-things funny on a giant scale, immortalizing the gags, one-liners, songs, and catchphrases of more than a thousand of Britain’s bestloved comedians and writers. Cost of bellyache? Absolutely zilch!

From out of the darkness shine more than a million magical bulbs, bathing the entire Promenade in a sea of colour and you can enjoy each and every one of them with our compliments!

The famous Switch-On event will take place on Friday 1 September triggering a nightly display during the autumn and winter months. Prepare to be dazzled.

On a sun-kissed day or even a wind-swept evening, there’s no better place to be. Build a sandcastle, go for a paddle, pack a picnic (but please don’t leave any litter behind) or just quietly ponder the meaning of life (or what you fancy for tea!) Don’t forget to say ‘Hi’ to Nigel, our celebrity seagull if you spot him. He’s the one wearing a rather smart beanie hat!

Toy Story

Take a trip back in time with a visit to Brooks Collectables and Toy Museum.

This is a real hidden gem for anyone with an interest in toys from the 60s, 70s and 80s. including a vintage Star Wars collection, and a fascinating array of radios, cameras, and dolls.

The family-run business on South Promenade is hugely popular with adults and children alike.

The first floor museum is free to enter, and you can wallow in nostalgia for as long as you like.

We work very closely with AccessAble to provide detailed, accurate information to support all visitors. There are Access Guides available for hundreds of venues including The Blackpool Tower, Madame Tussauds, Pleasure Beach, the Comedy Carpet, Blackpool Transport and the Winter Gardens so that anyone visiting the resort can find out in advance if a setting is going to be easy to navigate and enjoy.

They include photographs and maps and detail such things as ease of access from outside, lifts and lighting, change in levels, car parking spaces, accessible toilets and changing facilities as well as the availability of devices such as hearing loops.

The guides are also designed to help others with access

needs, such as parents with prams or the elderly needing to know more about walking distances or areas to rest. To find out more, go to accessable.co.uk or visitblackpool.com

We’re proud to have one of the UK’s most accessible venues here in the resort. 1860s - 1890s

u When being built it was decided that North Pier would focus its efforts on catering to the ‘better classes’, charging for entry and including attractions such as an orchestra and band concerts. To further enhance this, in 1874 the pier was enlarged, and the Indian Pavilion was constructed alongside the bandstand. This would prove to be the resort’s primary indoor entertainment venue before Blackpool Winter Gardens was built in 1879.

On 8 October 1892 a storm damaged vessel unfortunately hit the south side of North Pier, causing four shops and part of the deck to collapse onto the beach bellow. Luckily, all the ship’s crew members were safely rescued and repair work costing a hefty £5,000 was soon underway.

Between 1895 and 1896, the pier was deemed too unsafe to open so, during this time, renovations took place to widen the structure and add electric lighting. However, further

damage was later caused in 1897 when HMS Foudroyant –Nelson’s former flagship – was moored alongside North Pier for an exhibition. The anchor slipped during a violent storm on 16 June impacting a section of the jetty.

1900s - 1940s

u It’s not all doom and gloom because by 1903, new additions were added to the pier. Including shops and an arcade pavilion incorporating a wide range of games catering to all ages was

added to the front. Between 1932 and 1933, alterations included transforming the open-air stand into the Sun Lounge with amazing views. In 1938, a fire broke out in the Indian Pavilion, this lead to the construction of the North Pier Theatre, a new 1500-seater art-deco theatre which opened in 1939.

On 19 July 1948, Harry Corbett bought Sooty from a novelty shop on North Pier. After a long, illustrious career one of the original Sooty puppets has been gifted back and is on show on the pier.

44 visitblackpool.com
The Blackpool Pier Company has had a long and vibrant history. This year marks a very special date in the calendar with North Pier reaching its milestone 160th birthday. Here is a whistle stop tour of how that came to be…

1960s - 1990s

u In 1960, the pier saw the addition of an amusement arcade and the much-loved Merrie England Bar, popular for many years. The rebuilt North Pier Theatre narrowly escaped damage when a fire broke out in 1985 but fortunately was spotted by performer Vince Hill. It was time for a fresh new look in the 1980s with a new Victorian style entrance costing £350,000.

1991 heralded the arrival of the most famous landmark on North Pier - The Carousel! 1997, however, ended on a low point. A fierce storm on Christmas Eve destroyed the jetty completely severing it from the pier.

On the 21st May 1863, more than 20,000 visitors attended the opening ceremony of Blackpool Pier – now known as North Pier. It was quite the occasion conducted by Mayor Preston and 150 officials and marked with a canon salute and procession. Despite the final 50 yards of the pier not yet being completed, all the shops in the area were closed and decorated with flags and streamers for the special event.

Designed by Eugenius Birch – the second of 14 piers to be created by him – North Pier was built by Glasgow Engineering firm

2000s

u In 2004, North Pier was recognized as ‘Pier of the Year’ by the National Piers Society. It is one of the few remaining examples of Birch’s classic pier architecture and is a Grade II listed building, the only Blackpool Pier to hold that prestigious status. In 2011, local family, the Sedgwick’s took ownership of North Pier and vowed to restore it to its former glory. After suffering severe storm damage in 2013, multi-million pound repairs to North Pier were in full swing and by the end of 2014 it was said to be in the best condition of all time.

Initially two kiosks were occupied by book and

confectionery stalls, with sheltered seating at the wider pier head. In 1866 a landing jetty into deeper waters was added for steamers to be moored.

A very exciting future lies ahead for North Pier

u North Pier has witnessed many changes over the years. Most recently has been the addition of Bloom Bar and The Garden situated at the end of the pier where you can take in magnificent sunsets while enjoying a glass of champagne, Prosecco, or a gin and tonic. The contemporary lounge, surrounded by flower blossoms and comfortable chairs with a view of the Blackpool coastline, provides endless photo opportunities. There’s even an Instagram wall, perfect for posing on the Gram!

Families are welcome and entertainment is provided every day throughout the season.

North Pier recently honoured Blackpool legend, Joe Longthorne, who performed more than 20 sell-out seasons in the iconic North Pier Theatre. The decision was made to rename the venue The Joe Longthorne Theatre. The much-loved artist described it as his all-time favourite venue, and it now provides first-class entertainment to people from across the country.

Fast forward to 2023 and North Pier is celebrating its 160 birthday. It knows how to celebrate, so keep an eye out for what’s in store…
