Taking The Waters
The Warm Springs Pools
Bath County was once inhabited by Native Americans who used the unique landscape to travel to buffalo hunting grounds and trade points. According to legend, a Native American discovered the springs on his way to a tribal council. Weary from the long journey, he bathed in the pools and felt refreshed enough to continue his trek. As word spread about the springs, the trip to the pools became known as “taking the waters”.
Over time, Warm Springs developed into a wellness destination. In the 1700s, many inns and resorts opened to accommodate the growing number of visitors. As a result, an octagonal stone basin was built in 1761 to manage the flow of water from the springs, making it the first spa structure in America. This “Great Bath,” now called the Gentlemen’s Bathhouse, was used by men and women on an alternating schedule throughout the day. It wasn’t until the mid-1870s that the second structure, the Ladies Bathhouse, was constructed.
One notable guest of the pools was Thomas Jefferson, who visited in 1818 at the age of 75. He stayed for over three weeks, taking the waters several times a day to alleviate his rheumatism pain. For a century, the pools were known as The Jefferson Pools in honor of his historic visit. However, after a multi-year renovation and rehabilitation by Omni Hotels and Resorts, the springs were renamed The Warm Springs Pools to acknowledge their historical significance and overall heritage.
The Warm Springs pools are listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places and are part of the Warm Springs and West Warm Springs Historic District.
Thanks to Preservation Bath and The Omni Homestead Resort for helping with this article and their tireless work preserving Bath County’s historic assets.

Birding The Open Road
In the spring, migratory birds return to Bath County and the rest of the Central Appalachians front their wintering grounds in the tropics. Many are summer resident birds which will stay in the region through fall, while others will nest further north and will just be passing through. Peak migration is normally around Mother’s Day. Here’s a couple birding walks that have easy access in Bath County:
Hidden Valley Recreation Area
For a river walk, travel (via Route 39 west) to Hidden Valley Recreational Area. Park at the low water bridge near Hidden Valley Bed & Breakfast and hike the Hidden Valley Trail east along the river to the swinging bridge. You can return via the same trail or cross the bridge and return via the Jackson River Gorge Trail. Look and listen for Northern Parula, Indigo Bunting, Summer Tanager, Eastern Kingbird, and perhaps even Golden-winged Warbler in the shrubby field areas.
Warm Springs Mountain
Take advantage of the higher elevations along the Warm Springs Mountain ridgeline. On the southern end of the mountain, drive up Airport Road (Route 703) very slowly, pulling over at the Airport Overlook and other wide places along the shoulder. Look for Chestnut-sided Warbler and Indigo Bunting near any overlooks on the western side of the road and perhaps catch a glimpse of a Canada Warbler along the rock/ boulder slides on the eastern side of the road.

Music & The Arts
The cultural landscape of Bath County is as breathtaking as the natural one. It’s not surprising that musicians, artists and craftsmen of all kinds find Bath County to be the perfect environment for creativity.
The Bath County Art Show
Every July, the Bath County Arts Association hosts The Bath County Art Show. This juried show often features over 700 works from close to 300 different artists. Proceeds from the show support arts and arts education in schools and sponsor events in the local community.
Did you know?
The Bath County Art Show is the largest indoor art show in Virginia, held annually at Bath County High School.
Warm Springs Gallery
Since 1995, the Warm Springs Gallery has been offering its visitors an exciting and inspired collection of contemporary paintings and fine crafts. Each year, visitors are treated to a rich collection of fresh new work and familiar favorites.
The gallery exhibits a diverse roster of established and emerging artists from around the country, representing more than twenty painters, whose styles span the spectrum from realism to abstraction. They also exhibit fine crafts, integrating exquisite sculptural objects in glass, wood, clay, fiber, and bronze alongside two-dimensional works.
Fort Lewis Lodge
Garth Newel Music Center
A renowned venue for chamber music and aspiring artists, Garth Newel Music Center is one of Virginia’s bedrock institutions in the arts. The center’s award-winning resident ensemble, the Garth Newel Piano Quartet, presents over 50 concerts each year. In addition, they maintain an active touring presence on the national and international stage.
An evening or afternoon concert at Garth Newel is truly an event to remember. Musicians break the fourth wall, engaging the audience with personal stories and conversation, often paired with an exceptional dinner, picnic, or cocktails. When the concert bell rings, guests take their seats and are drawn into an uplifting musical experience.
