The Facets of Theater Chemnitz T he cultural heart of the city is where the five artistic strands of Theater Chemnitz come together: opera, philharmonic orchestra, theatre, ballet and puppet theatre. Powerful performances, daring interpretations, spectacular set designs and international collaborations draw many culture enthusiasts to Chemnitz.

Prosperity and artistic sensibility were so widespread amongst Chemnitz citizens in the 19th century that their generous donations enabled the Chemnitzer Opernhaus (Opera House) to be built and opened as early as 1909.

Theatre in Chemnitz goes back much further and has had a permanent home in its very own theatre since 1838.

This was completely destroyed in February 1945, and performances were moved temporarily to the auditorium of a retirement home at the theatre’s current location. In 1976, this part of the building burnt down. A dedicated playhouse, the Schauspielhaus, was built in its place and opened in 1980.

Every season, the Theater Chemnitz succeeds in maintaining an internationally acclaimed standard of artistic performance. It is the tried-and-tested yet everchanging shift in perspective that makes the city’s theatre productions such triumphs. It is well worth exploring the diversity of its different stages.

1 — Opernhaus (Opera House) Right from its opening programme in 1909, the Chemnitzer Opernhaus ensemble has performed works by Richard Wagner.

This was the start of a tradition that reached a new all-time high in recent years: in 2018, four female directors presented a new staging of the entire Ring cycle. The effort paid off. Director Elisabeth Stöppler won the leading German theatre award, DER FAUST, in the Musical Theatre Direction category in 2019 for Götterdämmerung.

The Ring will also be performed over the Easter and Ascension Day periods in 2021. The music will be conducted by Guillermo García Calvo, who is known for his partiality for Wagner and whose interpretations are celebrated by audiences and the press alike.

The Oper Chemnitz repertoire is extremely broad and includes children‘s operas as well as classic operatic works by Verdi, Rossini, Bizet and Mozart. Performances of lesser-known works, such as Franco Faccio’s Hamlet and Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele, also feature in its programme, along with stunning renditions of musicals such as My Fair Lady and Evita.

2 — Schauspielhaus (Playhouse)

In the days when Chemnitz was known as Karl-Marx-Stadt, the Schauspielhaus was one of the most prominent and progressive theatres in the GDR. It staged productions by Frank Castorf and launched the careers of legendary actors such as Ulrich Mühe, Michael Gwisdek and Corinna Harfouch. For directors such as Michael Thalheimer, Armin Petras and Hasko Weber, it was also an important starting point and a developmental experience. Weber often returns, and directed Homo Faber by Max Frisch in 2017. But director in residence Carsten Knödler not only brings in well-known guest directors; he too directs productions in his home theatre. He, too, directs productions in his home theatre. He is partial to the American and Russian realists, such as Arthur Miller or Anton Chekhov, as well as German classics and adaptations of world literature and musical productions. His trademark, which has been remarked on by the press in relation to many of his productions, is that he is able to bring sensitive topics to the stage without moralising or wagging his finger. Established favourites also include light entertainment for the whole family, Christmas stories and the annual open-air theatre performance on the Küchwaldbühne stage.

3 — Figurentheater (Puppet Theatre) On strings, sticks or with their own hands, the performers of the Figurentheater use all manner of puppets and objects to tell fascinating stories – and often appear themselves on stage alongside their characters. Not just for children, the repertoire of the puppet ensemble ranges from classic fairy tales and adaptations of popular children’s books to utopian, historical and intergenerational productions.

The Figurentheater is increasing expanding its programme for young adults and adults, telling stories from history. Productions include an evening dealing with Stefan Heym and his home city of Chemnitz entitled If Somebody Asked Me… and Beate Uwe Uwe Selfie Klick, which looks at the National Socialist Underground.

Director Gundula Hoffmann and her team address challenging issues such as bullying or refugees and migration, as well as seeking to prompt a dialogue between the generations. Uprising of Things, for instance, dealt with German reunification. It was shortly followed by the début performance of Yuri – The First Journey. 4 — Ballett (Ballet)

20 dancers, 15 countries and four continents: Sabrina Sadowska has been the director of this international ballet ensemble since 2017. Its programme includes classical narrative ballet danced on pointe, such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, as well as family pieces and contemporary, experimental dance. Sabrina Sadowska brings in outstanding, internationally renowned choreographers such as Alexander Ekman and distinguished newcomers like Katarzyna Kozielska – both of whom were involved in the acclaimed dance evening, Nordlicht.

In the ballet hall, the company dances up close to the audience using its Showcase format, adressing controversial topics and exploring issues such as the relationship between the individual and society. For the international festival of contemporary dance, TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ, performances are also staged in public spaces in the city, allowing viewers to experience new dimensions of dance.

(Philharmonic Orchestra) The Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie is one of Germany‘s longest-standing orchestras. It adopted its current namein 1983 to mark its 150th anniversary. The city‘s orchestra was founded by Wilhelm August Mejo in 1833. Oscar Malata, Mejo‘s successor and from 1920 to 1931 the orchestra‘s first musical director, led the ensemble to national fame.

The philharmonic orchestra plays in the orchestra pit of the Opernhaus, accompanying operas, operettas and ballet performances, and has a wide repertoire of symphonies and chamber music. As part of other concert projects, such as the Klasse Klassik! series, the orchestra will play in unusual locations in Chemnitz – including the tram depot.

INTERVIEW WITH SABRINA SADOWSKA & RODRIGO PASTORE The Opernhaus and Hall 1 of Messe Chemnitz: two stages, one in the Opera House, the other in the trade fair centre, where excellence and emotion can create magical moments. At least, that is the aim of the Theater Chemnitz ballet company and the basketball players of the Niners Chemnitz team.

We spoke with ballet director Sabrina Sadowska and the head coach of the Niners Chemnitz, Rodrigo Pastore, about what their work has in common and how they produce outstanding performances. A conversation about Chemnitz as a city of sports and culture, and about how liveable they both find the city.

VISIT CHEMNITZ: First of all, congratulations to you both on your outstanding achievements this season so far. The Niners Chemnitz are almost unbeaten with their recordbreaking season. And your company, Ms Sadowska, has excelled this year, as in previous years, and has been highly praised by the critics. What makes your teams so strong and successful? How much of it is individual talent, and how much is hard work and other factors?

SABRINA SADOWSKA: First of all, you need to understand people. We all have a goal. And what is the goal of a performance? Is it only beauty? The criteria of a good performance are constantly changing. We have one team. And we have so many different nationalities and age groups. And yet we all need to work together so that everyone knows their position. Everyone needs to know what’s expected of them. We respect each other, but we also challenge one another: “Okay, that was good, but there’s more to learn.” Another important question is: what do I bring to the community? Community is very important. You can’t stand on stage as a soloist without a team to support you.

RODRIGO PASTORE: That’s a very good point. I would like to add another question: what is success? The public often defines success as victory. But we’re talking about something different. And I understand that victories count as success, but that is not what makes our season successful. Our team is bigger than just the players. There are many people whose names and pictures don’t end up in the papers. They’re never talked about. And yet they are extremely important in our organisation. Our success is what we achieve together. We also understand that this is a professional sport, where the players are playing for money. The club competes with a lot of other teams that may have more resources, so it needs to convince the players that it is the right place for them. That brings us to the second question: what do they want? When we talk to our players, we explain to them how we can help them with their personal development. We see in them the players they have the potential to become. In addition to their

individual qualities, that means belonging to something bigger than themselves. We are a very strong organisation guided by the mindset of “team first”. That’s what it’s all about. “We” is more important than “I”.

VISIT CHEMNITZ: You both lead very international and diverse teams. What is the most important factor for success in this kind of environment, what obstacles do you face, and how do you overcome them?

RODRIGO PASTORE: A lack of openness is often a barrier, which is why we are honest with everyone we bring on to the team. Before signing any contracts, we explain to them exactly what they should expect and that there is no red carpet waiting for them. There is hard work ahead of them. And there is no secret to making a name for yourself. If you want to be the best, you can be the best. But you won’t achieve it by sitting at home playing video games. That’s why we provide a very clear picture of what the reality looks like. We say if you don’t agree, don’t sign and don’t join, because we need your complete commitment. We demand 100% from every member of our team.

But it’s hard to do that in an environment that’s so perfect, because it’s not worth tearing the walls down. It’s too beautiful. I’ve lived in many cities in Germany, particularly in the GDR in the late 80s. And when I came to Chemnitz seven years ago, it was like a garden full of treasures that nobody notices any more because there are so many of them. They see only the weeds and things that have grown over them. I go out every day and try to find something hidden, to take something from it, and plant some new flowers or a tree or something.

From this point onwards, a lively dialogue unfolds about the fascinating and (as yet) unknown aspects of our two interviewees’ different careers. RODRIGO PASTORE: For me, it’s an easy choice. When I walk my dog in the Stadtpark, one of the city’s many large parks, we always pass by a magnificent tree.

It’s magical in the summer especially, and at any time of year really.

I’m lucky to live right nearby. That would be my favourite place. But I also love the forests around the city for a peaceful stroll.

SABRINA SADOWSKA: I completely agree. I ask my dancers twice a season: “Do you really want to be here? Is this still what you want to do?” And if it isn’t, or they suddenly have a personal crisis and want to do something else, then we need to find a solution quickly. It can bring down the entire team if they bring issues to work with them that don’t belong there, or because they have personal problems that they have failed to mention or haven’t dealt with properly.

SABRINA SADOWSKA: For me it’s the Schloßteich, the beautiful Castle Pond, maybe even on a boat. If you were to ask me for an indoor place, I enjoy drinking a coffee while admiring artworks in the Kunstsammlungen.

VISIT CHEMNITZ: You have one other thing in common: Switzerland.

Ms Sadowska, you were born in Basel and grew up there.

Mr Pastore, you were a successful basketball player in Switzerland and started your coaching career there. This means you can both see Chemnitz as insiders and as outsiders. What makes this city special for you?

RODRIGO PASTORE: It’s very simple. When I first came to Chemnitz, it was the Niners’ president back then, Martin Schuster, who said to me several times: “Chemnitz is a city of hard-working people,” and I said: “Perfect. I’ll fit right in there because that’s what I’m like, too.” I’m in tune with this mentality, with this type of person. That’s how I am. And I must say, I noticed it from day one.

SABRINA SADOWSKA: In Switzerland, everything is perfect and organised for an optimal standard of living. But I was still very young.

I was twenty when I left. I wanted to tear down walls and build something new. I wanted to experiment on my own.

An annually changing venue is one of the key traditions of this festival, and gives the festival its name: Begehungen, meaning „inspections“. This arts and culture festival is a chance for visitors to enter places that are usually closed to the public and view temporary art exhibitions inside them. But that’s not all – with a wide-ranging fringe programme, consisting of performances, readings and concerts, Begehungen is also a meeting point for people from all walks of life. Since 2003, Begehungen has been the city’s biggest alternative culture event and has provided an unconventional and accessible way of experiencing art and culture. Begehungen is an inclusive festival with very few barriers to disabled visitors. Hosted on the third weekend of August, it has a wide range of events that allow visitors to experience a location in the city anew. And entry is free!

KOSMOS makes social discourse visible in Chemnitz. This meeting of local and international stakeholders presents different events on the themes, culture, music, the economy, politics and society. KOSMOS is a platform for discussion about the future and deals with issues such as how we would like to coexist with one another. It is held in the city centre in squares that host many other events, but also in vacant buildings, public spaces and the streets of Chemnitz.

Readings, concerts, talks, discussions, exhibitions and information stands are an invitation to rediscover the city and get involved. With over 40 venues in unusual and sometimes new locations, it didn’t take this event long to win a place in the hearts of many Chemnitzers.

CULTURAL HISTORY BROUGHT TO LIFE SMAC – a stroll through 300,000 years of cultural history, with 6,200 exhibits across 3,000 square metres and three floors.

This is the Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz (Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology), or SMAC for short.

An impressive multimedia exhibition helps visitors discover how humanity became what it is today. With its dynamic curved wave shape, this architectural icon is an integral part of the cityscape. Designed and built by acclaimed architect Erich Mendelsohn, the former Kaufhaus Schocken department store can look back on international prestige and a 70year history in retail.

Since 2014, as the Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz, it has offered visitors a stroll through history instead of a stroll round the shops. Visitors can wander through the development of our species over three floors, from hunting and gathering right up to the modern age. A striking feature of the exhibition is the suspended model of Saxony. As it travels vertically between all the floors of the museum, it uses video projection to fast-forward

through the millennia. Some of the archaeological exhibits reveal astonishing details and vividly illustrate the life and world of the people who once lived in the region that is now Saxony. Did you know that the people who lived in what is now Markkleeberg – in other words, right around the corner – 280,000 years ago liked to collect souvenirs?

And suddenly the penny drops: these were our ancestors!

The large bays on each floor formed by the curved windows offer one of the best views of Chemnitz. They also house an exhibition giving an insight into the history of the building. These long curved rooms, separated from the archaeological exhibition by white walls running the length of the windows, tell the stories of architect Erich Mendelsohn on the first floor, of the Schocken department store on the second and of businessman Salman Schocken on the third.

Stemming from various civic associations, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (Chemnitz Art Collections) are one of the biggest and most significant public art collections in Germany. They were first brought together as part of the König-Albert-Museum (King Albert Museum) in 1909 and have been run as a municipal museum since 1920.

Industrial development in the early 20th century brought wealth to the city, which led to the establishment of a culturally important tradition of patronage. This tradition is responsible for many of the treasures in the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.

Today, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz include the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz with the Carlfriedrich Claus Archive, the Museum Gunzenhauser, the Schloßbergmuseum of city history with Rabenstein castle, and the Henry van de Velde Museum in Villa Esche, which was designed by van de Velde himself. Each of these galleries has its own style and its own focus – including a focus on public space for 2020.

In the same vein, the work done by institutions like these will play an important role: at monthly public events, employers will shed light on their work in the Behind the Scenes format.

Museum Gunzenhauser Buildings in Chemnitz often take on a new use – and this is one of them. The Museum Gunzenhauser, which was named after its benefactor, the art collector and gallery owner Alfred Gunzenhauser, is located in the former premises of the Chemnitz Sparkasse savings bank. Designed by Fred Otto in the New Building style, it complements the collection perfectly: in addition to numerous artworks by Conrad Felixmüller, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paula Modersohn-Becker and Gabriele Münter, the museum also houses large collections of work by Otto Dix and Alexej von Jawlensky.

Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz (Art Collections on Theaterplatz) In 2020, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz will celebrate 100 years as a municipal museum. What’s more, it’s the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Kunsthütte zu Chemnitz, a civic art association whose collection formed the basis of the museum when it was founded. To mark this double anniversary, the museum will display a representative selection of artworks from the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz’ extensive exhibits.

Schloßbergmuseum As a museum of city history, it goes without saying that the Schloßbergmuseum is also housed in a historic building: originally a monastery and then the site of the city’s founding, later a hunting lodge and now an exhibition space – the history behind the museum site is just as fascinating as its unique collection. Perhaps the most interesting object on display is the “Holy Sepulchre of Chemnitz” – only three similar ensembles exist in Europe. But the special exhibitions are also well worth a visit and provide many fascinating insights into the city’s history, parts of which still remain to be discovered.

Henry-van-de-Velde-Museum In 1902, the textile manufacturer Herbert Eugen Esche commissioned the artist, designer and architect Henry van de Velde to design a whole villa, complete with interior. Today, this building, which is itself a work of art, houses the art collections of the Henry van de Velde Museum, as well as a restaurant and event rooms.

Burg Rabenstein (Rabenstein Castle) Burg Rabenstein is believed to be Saxony’s smallest medieval castle and, together with the castle museum in the Burgmuseum, forms part of the Schloßbergmuseum, at least from an administrative standpoint. The interior is open for viewing from May to October, and the medieval festival draws a crowd every Easter. The castle’s most famous resident is probably Hans Carl von Carlowitz, the “founder of sustainability”, who was born there in 1645.

Kunst Stadt Chemnitz (Art City Chemnitz) For this exhibition project, which has been awarded substantial funding from the Federal Cultural Foundation, public spaces in Chemnitz city centre will be transformed into sites for contemporary art during the summer of 2020.

More than 20 renowned international artists and collectives have been invited to explore the history of the city and its society, and to develop works linked to specific locations – including interventions, sculptures, installations and performances – for the urban space.

Discover 500 years of industrial heritage in Saxony from Chemnitz For 500 years, Saxony has been shaped by mining and industry.

Sparked by the discovery of silver deposits in the 15th century and powered by coal, hard work and the spirit of invention, the region’s industry became the foundation for a cultural landscape that is unique in Europe.

In 2020, the fourth Saxon state exhibition, Boom. 500 Years of Industrial Heritage in Saxony, is dedicated to this fundamental component of Saxon identity. The central exhibition in Zwickau and six in-depth local exhibitions in Chemnitz, Oelsnitz, Zwickau, Crimmitschau and Freiberg present Saxon industrial heritage from the past to the near future. The term “industrial heritage” provides a whole new understanding of the Saxon mentality and culture.

Industrial heritage is not just the history of companies and manufacturing, but also encompasses the effects of industrial innovation on people, culture and the environment. Just as the TV detective Schimanski and kiosks are part of the industrial heritage of the Ruhr area, Räuchermann incense smokers, revolution, Audi and the Trabant are part of Saxony.

The old wisdom that everything comes from the mountain is the idea that unites the seven exhibitions. The discovery of huge deposits of silver in the western Erzgebirge more than 500 years ago led to an enormous boom in Saxony and laid the foundations for an industrial region. This was the beginning of a success story that continues to this day and has constantly reinvented itself through wars, revolutions and upheaval. For two centuries, Chemnitz has been an economic powerhouse in Germany and remains an innovative economic centre today. The city is the ideal starting point for a visit to the Saxon state exhibition, which for the first time ever will be shown not only in one location, but in many different locations in south-west Saxony from 11 July to 31 December. The central exhibition tells the story of traditions and permanent new beginnings. The 2,500-square-metre exhibition illustrates Saxony’s industrial heritage, from silver mining in the Middle Ages and class struggles in the German Empire to artificial intelligence in the near future. More than 500 exhibits chronicle and bear witness to Saxony’s rich industrial heritage. The treasures in the central exhibition are presented in an authentic historical building: the Audi-Bau museum in Zwickau, a place steeped in tradition. history in Saxony. In a unique atmosphere in one of the largest marshalling yards in Europe, the RailwayBoom exhibition in Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf explains the significance of the railway. At the Schauplatz Eisenbahn (Exhibition Railway), visitors can explore the industrial interconnection between people, raw materials and goods as they walk among historic steam and diesel locomotives in the sooty atmosphere of the roundhouse at the open-air industrial museum.

Mining in Saxony produced knowledge, raw materials and infrastructure that benefited other important industrial sectors. One of these was the textile industry, which was a leading industry in Saxony until German reunification in 1989/90. The TextileBoom exhibition brings its namesake to life in the unique setting of the former cloth factory, Tuchfabrik Gebrüder Pfau, in Crimmitschau. Spanning 100 years, its machine exhibits are preserved in their original condition and allow visitors to take a journey through the history of textiles. Another important industrial sector is the automotive industry, which continues to provide many people in the region with work and a sense of identity. Legendary brands like Audi, DKW and Trabant were born in south-west Saxony.

The CarBoom exhibition at the August Horch Museum in Zwickau illuminates automotive history and explores the future of the sector, focusing in particular on automotive production in Saxony. Alongside the exhibitions, the Chemnitz venues will host an extensive programme of accompanying events.

venues: each of the six industry museums represents an important sector in Saxon industrial history, located in places where these sectors once operated. For example, the SilverBoom exhibition in Freiberg, located 150 metres underground, explores the origins of Saxony’s wealth. A direct product of mining in Saxony is coal, which was abundant in western Saxony and triggered the Coal boom in the 19th century. This made Saxony one of the heartlands of the Industrial Revolution. In the shadow of the former headframe of the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge Mining Museum, from April an updated exhibition will help visitors understand the conditions in mines and the impact of mining, which continues to be felt to this day. The coal mined from the mountain became the industry’s “bread and butter”, and fed many people during the industrialisation era. As a result, Saxony became the cradle of German mechanical engineering.

Machines have been constructed and manufactured in the region for more than 200 years, from Glashütte’s intricate clockwork to Chemnitz’ high-tech machining centres. But what is a machine, and what role do machines play in our lives? In the local exhibition MachineryBoom, the Industriemuseum Chemnitz (Chemnitz Museum of Industry) explores the relationship between people and machines.

“There’s no culture without industry” Two venues of the Saxon Boom 2020 state exhibition are located in Chemnitz: the Schauplatz Eisenbahn (Exhibition Railway) in ChemnitzHilbersdorf and the Industriemuseum Chemnitz (Chemnitz Museum of Industry) on Zwickauer Straße. In 2020, both museums will be focusing their exhibitions and activities on the city’s industrial history. It’s only three stops by train – and on the train is exactly where Sven Liebold, Board Member of the Schauplatz Eisenbahn, and Jürgen Kabus, Head Curator of the Industriemuseum, meet.

We meet at Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf station. It’s a Tuesday in December; it’s cold outside, and the train arrives punctually. Ahead of us is a 14-minute train journey and a jar full of questions.

We board the train, show our tickets, get set and go. You might think our two interviewees had deliberately colourcoordinated their outfits for today.

Jürgen: Sven, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the railway and Chemnitz?

Sven: Lots of things! Chemnitz was once home to one of the largest marshalling yards in Europe. The Schauplatz Eisenbahn is not only a venue for the state exhibition, but also a vast and beautiful museum. Otherwise: travel and rail connections to many other lovely town and cities.

Next question! Sven pulls a question for Jürgen out of the jar.

Sven: What kind of visitors do you hope to receive next year?

Jürgen: Everyone! As a museum, I don’t have any favourite visitors. I hope that many people will come to visit Chemnitz.

Jürgen: Why is Boom 2020 an unmissable event?

Sven: Because it’s exciting and interesting. 500 years of industrial history in Saxony – and it covers almost every sector that everyone should be at least a little bit interested in!

Jürgen: I agree — Boom is about understanding.

Sven: One current example is the Thales railcar, which is being used as a test vehicle for modern technologies in the upper Erzgebirge. The keyword here is autonomous trains. It’s not fully autonomous yet, as there’s always a person present, so it’s more a question of computer-assisted transport.

Railway fans know a lot about the subject, you can tell. There is a sense of pure optimism – even between the lines. Time for one last question before we reach our destination. Jürgen draws for Sven.

A dialogue instead of just a Q&A. That’s exactly what we had in mind.

Sven: Industrial culture – somebody once said there is no such thing. But it has actually become a well-established concept in recent years, and I think it fits.

What is happening here now is industrial culture.

Sven: Tickets – the old-fashioned way from a ticket machine or from an app?

Jürgen: Industry or culture?

Jürgen: Tickets? Do we need tickets?

So we’re all of the same mind. Things are surprisingly agreeable on board, but the conversation is only just getting started. Next question for Jürgen.

Sven: What has influenced Chemnitz’s industrial history more: production or mobility?

Jürgen: That’s not an easy question to answer. Chemnitz stands for production – but production without mobility is futile. That brings us back to the first question: without the railway, there would be no goods transport, and without goods transport, there would be no sales. Both have influenced Chemnitz industrial history significantly. That’s why the railway and mechanical engineering boom happened here. Production and mobility.

Announcement. We have arrived at the central station. But our participants stay on track. The idea is clear now, and the discussion gradually picks up steam.

Jürgen: Museums – a place for history or for the future?

Sven: Both. History is the anchor of museums. But there are always ideas about the future that can and should be represented there.

Sven: I don’t know.

Laughter ensues. Time for a little more history. A question for Sven.

Jürgen: If you could travel back in time through Chemnitz’s history, where would you travel to?

Sven: I think I would like to see the Hartmann plant in action in its heyday.

The beginnings of industrial history here in Chemnitz – I think that would be fascinating.

From offstage, we say we would also be interested to hear Jürgen’s answer.

Jürgen: I think that’s a great idea. The concept of our exhibition is largely based on the future. We want to explore where we’re heading, what role machines play in society and whether machines are good or bad.

Sven: Yes, I can. Industry and culture can complement each other. We have industry here in Chemnitz – including modern industry. And culture is formed from what industry has brought into being, now and in the past. It goes all the way from remembering our history in museums to art.

Jürgen: I completely agree. The “or” in the question is misplaced. And there’s no place for industrial culture like Chemnitz.

Sven: After all, we practically invented it.

Jürgen: I think I would like to visit Chemnitz in around 1800 and see the first spinning mill. But I’d also be interested in seeing the early beginnings and periods of upheaval, as well as the major players in the city, such as Schönherr.

To see how Schönherr and Hartmann worked together and butted heads – now we can only speculate about that based on historical records.

Chemnitz-Mitte: we have reached our destination. It’s still cold, but Sven and Jürgen have worked up a little heat from their exchange. We continue on foot to the Industriemuseum. There we address the big issues once more and take another look at the question: why was the “or” struck out from the last question?

As you approach the hostel building, you will quickly notice its unique architecture in the classic modernist style. Built in 1908, the building was converted into a transformer plant on the basis of designs by the architect Friedrich Wagner-Poltrock in the 1920s.

Considering all the metamorphoses Chemnitz has undergone over the past few decades and even centuries, continuously reinventing itself in the face of historical developments could be described as one of the city’s specialities.

Perhaps it is precisely this ability to change and adapt that has served as a vital anchor for the identity of the Saxon city at the foot of the Erzgebirge as it constantly rediscovers itself.

This is how Chemnitz came to write its own history and define the periods that have shaped it. All of this leads to one conclusion: the emergence of a capital of change and opportunity on the banks of the River Chemnitz.

This industrial complex right on the banks of the River Chemnitz was known colloquially as Schubert and Salzer before the Second World War and has a prominent place in the cityscape of Chemnitz – and not just because of its architecturally striking bell tower. On the contrary, it is one of the largest structures of its kind still standing and is a characteristic example of how the city approaches its industrial heritage. Different in architecture and layout from other surviving industrial complexes of the same type, the former knitting machine factory leaves a strong impression of the city’s industrial power on all those who enter it. With a pinch of imagination, you can still hear the pounding of the sock knitting machines and their tireless pulse, as well as the hustle and bustle of industrial Chemnitz in its heyday, as you walk down the paths that weave like canyons between the towering industrial workshops and factory halls, which are now listed and have been renovated. This hustle and bustle and industrious pulse have returned to the complex between Annaberger Straße, Gleisbogen and the Chemnitz South railway station, known today as a place to party.

Slightly further to the north but still in the river’s direct vicinity, the Schönherrfabrik, a former factory on Blankenauer Straße, has found a new destiny.

Architecturally distinct from the Wirkbau, it nevertheless follows the Chemnitz principle of converting disused yet valuable industrial buildings. In the former weaving loom factory built by Louis Ferdinand Schönherr, numerous small businesses have found new homes, including an events agency, IT and software developers, the cosy Café ankh, the max louis restaurant, which is famous for its excellent cuisine, the canteen of the same name and of at least equal quality, photography studios, artists, and even the practice room of a well-known Chemnitz punk band. A fitness studio for women, an exclusive sports store and a wellness studio are also located there. In a sense, the conversion of the Schönherrfabrik itself is like a wellness spa that has rejuvenated more than just the former complex and its historic industrial buildings.

Numerous small traders and businesses, artists such as Osmar Osten, and the Nomad restaurant have set up shop in the Wirkbau and filled the complex with life and economic ambition again. True to the city’s tireless faith in renewal through change, socks are no longer knitted here. Rather, the Wirkbau breathes life into new entrepreneurial dreams. And who knows, maybe socks will be one of them again someday.

STROLLING THROUGH LIFE

Chemnitz recommendations from Isabelle Weh and Uwe Dziuballa A stroll begins with the desire for unplanned discoveries. And sometimes this desire rests in the start of something new, in the search for the small but special things in life. It also resides in the creative impulse to bring completely opposing things together. If this is how you see things, Chemnitz is practically predestined to be a hub for lived and applied creativity. It’s rare for any city to offer a virtually bottomless reservoir for growth. The reason it exists here is because the necessary conditions and impetuses lie side by side in this city – despite being at odds with each other – and yet often do not stand out at first glance.

It was not so different when Isabelle Weh first encountered Chemnitz. And, as it becomes clear, it didn’t happen overnight for her. A decade ago, with her heart set on the dream of leading her own theatre, she stumbled upon an advertisement stating that what is now the Fritz Theater was looking for new tenants. Only shortly after having moved to Munich, she noticed another article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper about a Mr Uwe Dziuballa, who had for many years managed the Jewish restaurant Schalom in the city where the aforementioned theatre was located. She didn’t know Chemnitz at all, but if such a restaurant was a famous culinary destination in the city, then surely a new theatre could thrive there, too. So she wrote to this Mr Dziuballa and asked him what the city was like. The reply she received was more than just a euphoric description of the city, but in true Chemnitz style, a wellconsidered list of ten pros and ten cons of her future home.

The rest is history. The pros must have outweighed the cons because today the independent Fritz Theater is among

Chemnitz’s best-established venues. With Isabelle Weh, Alica Weirauch and Hardy Hoosman at its helm, it is located in a predominantly residential area on the north-western edge of the city. And so begins the next unusual, but very much characteristic story about Chemnitz and the density of opportunities that can be found here. The fact that such a theatre was able to establish itself so far from the city centre and its cultural attractions has a lot to do with the creativity, wit and skill of the ensemble, and the theatre’s ever-growing circle of friends; it has a lot to do with perseverance and persistent courage. That’s because the theatre is located in the former culture centre and cinema of the company Wismut AG. When you learn about the life of this theatre, with its 250 seats, then it shines like a jewel in its own right, not only in this quiet residential area, but also in Chemnitz’s remarkable cultural landscape. However, the beginning, as Isabelle Weh describes it, was rough. “But,” says Weh, “we could sense that we were constantly moving forward, and that more and more encouragement was coming.” People showed a willingness to help that there wouldn’t have been in Munich, for example.

So many people not only promised their support, but helped make sure that the theatre kept going – without, as Isabelle Weh puts it, holding their hand out for money right away. “We had barely announced the project, and already there were five people lined up saying ‘yes, come on, let’s do it’,” says Weh about those early years.

Schalom Restaurant Of course, the restaurant Schalom, managed by Uwe Dziuballa for twenty years and now in its third location at Heinrich-Zille-Straße 15, close to the Brühl, is an absolute must, according to Isabelle Weh. And not just because it was Uwe Dziuballa that brought her to Chemnitz, and they have stayed in touch ever since. The restaurant owner can often be found in the restaurant and, with a little luck, so can the occasional celebrity – and not just a big name from Chemnitz. Guests come from all over Germany to enjoy themselves and each other’s company in peace and quiet. A delicious kosher meal accompanied by an extended conversation is a great way to start an amble through Chemnitz, and it can be savoured in an ambiance that would have to be invented if it didn’t already exist. Uwe Dziuballa describes the key to Chemnitz’s successes as follows: “If you have an idea and do honest work, and don’t let yourself be influenced by too many outside suggestions, then you can very well find success within a large community in Chemnitz.”

When Isabelle Weh and Uwe Dziuballa meet on a bright January day, they instantly pick up where they left off. They have the rapport of familiar acquaintances who value each other for their commitment to Chemnitz and have written a shared story together. Before they know it, they are off on a mental stroll through life in Chemnitz and don’t just stay on the beaten track. A conversation about exuberance and Isabelle’s and Uwe’s personal discoveries and recommendations ensues.

Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz (Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology, SMAC) The Staatliches Museum für Archäologie is a suggestion from Schalom’s manager and an interesting recommendation, as a deep understanding of Jewish culture not only rests on knowledge and traditions that have been handed down, but on the study of archaeology and history. The museum, known as SMA C for short, is housed in the former Kaufhaus Schocken department store and explores 300,000 years of human history in Saxony. In a permanent exhibition spanning 3,000 square metres, it presents the history of Saxony from the time of the first hunter-gatherers roughly 300,000 years ago to early industrialisation. Its 6,200 exhibits also provide an insight into the work of the Archaeological Heritage Office in Saxony, while its layout and design – which reflect a very modern approach to museum education – inspire visitors to set off on a voyage of discovery from our early hunting and gathering ancestors to the Industrial Revolution in Saxony. The moment you enter you are immersed in a fascinating world where you can effortlessly learn all about how people shaped the cultural landscape – a memorable experience for young and old alike, not just for kids on a rainy afternoon! To top it all off, interesting special exhibitions round off this exceptional experience. “You can’t go wrong with SMAC,” says Uwe Dziuballa. “Not just because of its remarkable permanent exhibition and the special exhibitions, but also because of its insights into the history of the former department store.”

The Brühl Next to come up in the conversation is the Brühl, a district that has both our guides almost gushing as they praise it as a neighbourhood to stroll round and discover. A lot has changed in recent years, they say, as a wide variety of cafés and a colourful selection of stores have set up shop here. For example, it’s home to the Eierlikörz shop, which is famous for making the best egg liqueur, and just nearby there are delicious butchers’ shops. Especially in the spring, summer and autumn, you can amble through numerous events large and small hosted by the residents, who have made this boulevard what it was originally intended to be: a lively hub for ideas and activities in the city.

Isabelle is delighted by how the Pelzmühle is developing. This area in the Rabenstein district of the city has come along nicely and is well worth a visit, especially with kids, she says.

There is now a beautiful playground and, if you were to stop by one Saturday, you would quickly get the impression that it’s the centre of the universe. As it’s nestled in a lovely little park not far from the nearby Tierpark (Chemnitz Zoo) and the beautiful pond that bears the same name, many Chemnitz residents come to the Pelzmühle with their little ones or simply to relax.

Restaurant Janssen Janssen is the perfect place to end a stroll through the city, says Uwe Dziuballa. The restaurant’s terrace alone is worth the visit. In fact, if the terrace were suddenly to disappear one day, Dziuballa says you’d be sure to find it in front of his own restaurant. The restaurant is the ideal place to sit back and tuck into a tasty meal after a long tour of the city, or to finish an inquisitive stroll with a well-made coffee.

Schloßteich (Castle Pond) The Schloßteich, which Uwe Dziuballa warmly recommends, is not only a short stroll away from the Brühl, but also from nearby hotels. The Chemnitz native considers it a must-visit destination because this beautiful cultural landscape, right in the city centre, is truly enviable.

The Schloßteich lies at the foot of the summit of the Schloßberg, where the Chemnitzer Schloßkirche, the former Castle Church, proudly stands, visible from far afield. Created by the Benedictine monks from the local monastery, the pond is a piece of the city’s prehistory. It was once a fish pond that was used to feed and fund the monastery and its residents. Today, the joyfully youthful music festival Fuego a la isla takes over the island in the middle of the pond once a year, while outside of the festival, Chemnitz locals and visitors stake their claims to its banks.

Museum für sächsische Fahrzeuge (Saxon Motoring Museum) on the “Museum Mile” The Museum für sächsische Fahrzeuge on Zwickauer Straße, which some slightly euphemistically call the “Museum Mile”, is also within walking distance of the city centre.

But why not take one of Chemnitz’s modern Škoda trams, which roll through the city with quiet elegance? For Uwe Dziuballa, the museum has more to recommend it than just its vehicle exhibits. Rather, the team behind the museum exhibits the same spirit as the Fritz Theater: “There is so much enthusiasm from the management, who want to do much more than simply preserve artefacts. I think it’s fantastic and shows tremendous professional commitment,” says the restaurant owner, brimming with praise.

Experience and enjoy all that the festival has to offer every day throughout July and August (except Mondays). It’s the ideal way to start an evening or as a light cultural intermezzo during a stroll, sitting on a yoga mat or a picnic blanket on the lawn, dancing in front of the stage – sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, but always relaxed. CHRISTMAS MARKET For many people, Chemnitz Christmas Market begins with the arrival of the big Christmas tree in mid-November.

So this moment is traditionally celebrated in fitting style – with the first local sausages and mulled wine of the year.

Our tree is naturally the most beautiful and often also the largest in Saxony; Chemnitz Christmas Market has won multiple awards for being Saxony’s most attractive. Every year, the market is officially opened on the eve of the first Sunday of Advent by one of the largest miners’ parades in the Erzgebirge Mountains, with over 1,000 participants from 30 miners’ guilds and associations. 200 festively decorated booths, stands and fairground rides fill the area between Klosterstraße, the Marktplatz, Düsseldorfer Platz and Rosenhof with their Christmas cheer each and every year. Thousands of lights make the entire inner city twinkle, and delighted children wait in front of the stage for Father Christmas.

The booths offer gifts from the region or from further afield, and there are always new surprises to discover. It is this attractive mix that rekindles the excitement every year afresh. Erzgebirge folk art, sometimes very modern, alongside Russian hats, Bratwurst alongside crocodile goulash, Griene Kließ (potato dumplings) from Saxony alongside tarte flambée from Alsace, French crêpes alongside German Eierkuchen pancakes, mulled wine alongside mulled beer – you can eat and drink your way around the world at Chemnitz Christmas Market.

There’s something very different to see on the Innere Klosterstraße. In keeping with the street’s name, which recalls the monastery that once stood here, musicians entertain visitors with medieval airs, and children shriek with joy as they ride the swingboats and practise their crossbow skills. There is forging, roasting and boiling over open fires as people gather around the flames to warm themselves in a convivial circle. A large hot tub of water steams in the chilly winter air while brave bathers clink glasses of mead. The monastery Christmas has become a firm fixture of Chemnitz Christmas Market and in the hearts of the visitors.

Touring a Christmas wonderland of lights Anyone who visits the Erzgebirge Mountains at Christmas experiences a magnificent festival of lights: “Schwibbögen” candle arches in all the windows, glowing pyramids on the market squares of picturesque mining towns, and gloriously decorated streets and alleys stretching as far as the eye can see. Experience the unique beauty of this region during Advent while you discover mining culture and customs along the “Silver Road” in the Erzgebirge.

The Industrial Revolution in the Chemnitz region began in around 1798 with the construction of the first cotton mills.

The city of Chemnitz grew, and two giants of industry arrived in the forms of Richard Hartmann and Louis Ferdinand SchĂśnherr. Together they helped make Chemnitz one of the richest cities in Germany by the start of the 20th century.

Numerous impressive and striking buildings, among them monumental factories, were erected – cathedrals of industry which still shape the Chemnitz cityscape to this day.

1 - ALTE AKTIENSPINNEREI (OLD SPINNING MILL) UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Straße der Nationen 33 Situated in the immediate vicinity of Chemnitz central station, the Alte Aktienspinnerei presents a stately prospect following extensive renovations.

Formerly a spinning mill, and then the main city library and home of the Figurentheater (Puppet Theatre), the building is now used as the university library and archive.

2 - SCHÖNHERRFABRIK (SCHÖNHERR FACTORY) Schönherrstraße 8 This is where Louis Ferdinand Schönherr started the production of weaving looms on an industrial scale in 1851 – and he made his 10,000th loom just 20 years later. Covering some 83,000 square metres, the factory had an in-house foundry, a company fire brigade and a production line that was expanded to produce bobbin winding machines and even construction machinery. Following gradual restoration, a broad spectrum of new ideas, uses and leasing opportunities has emerged since 1990.

3 - HAASE-FABRIK (HAASE FACTORY) Rochlitzer Straße 19 The foundations were laid for the development of Chemnitz as a textile town with the granting of rights to establish a bleachery on the river Chemnitz in 1357. Weaving and spinning mills and drying houses followed, as did dyeing works, such as the factory built by the industrialist Theodor Haase. This imposing, carefully restored brick building is now once again the headquarters of a mediumsized company.

4 - JANSSEN-FABRIK (JANSSEN FACTORY) Schloßstraße 12 Directly opposite the Haase-Fabrik, on the other side of the river, lies the former Strumpfwirkerei William Janssen, a hosiery factory built in 1894. Today, people can live and shop here – or enjoy good food in Restaurant Janssen.

A recasting works was needed for trams in the city centre – so in 1908, a suitable building was constructed on the edge of central Chemnitz. A functional building with corners and edges in the New Objectivity style was expanded in the Golden Twenties – and survived the bombing in 1945. Today you can stay in the hostel or hold a meeting here: the Jugendherberge “eins” has plenty of space!

Housed in the former premises of several foundries, the Chemnitz branch of the Sächsisches Industriemuseum (Saxon Museum of Industry) provides an excellent insight into over 200 years of Saxon industrial history. As one of the participating venues of the 2020 Saxon state exhibition, the focus here is on machinery.

6 - BECKERBRÜCKE VIADUCT Beckerstraße / Annaberger Straße

This building, which is still currently under renovation, also once housed a textile firm. Designed by architect Hans Poelzig, it is a key object of industrial heritage, situated on the threshold between expressionism and the New Objectivity, and representing modernism in Chemnitz. Following the refurbishment, spacious apartments will be created here.

Built to replace the previous stone bridge, the viaduct was completed in its present form in 1909. Until this day it symbolises connectedness and committed citizenship, and is an outstanding industrial monument that fosters a sense of local identity.

7 - WIRKBAU Annaberger Straße 73 The foundation stone of the Wirkbau was laid as early as 1883 – the development of a complex ensemble of buildings, including the imposing clock tower, followed. Carl Schubert and Bruno Salzer established Germany’s largest textile machinery factory here. Today, many sections have been extensively refurbished, and numerous businesses, artists, and cafés and restaurants have set up shop here.

11 - VILLA ESCHE Parkstraße 58 Flourishing industry leads to great wealth in some cases, which is why it’s no surprise that, in 1902, textile manufacturer Herbert Eugen Esche commissioned Belgian architect Henry van de Velde to build a villa for him. The ensemble has been largely preserved, and today it is a museum and an events venue.

8 - MUSEUM FÜR SÄCHSISCHE FAHRZEUGE (SAXON MOTORING MUSEUM) Zwickauer Straße 77 There is no better place to retrace history than at a historic site. So it is only logical that the Museum für sächsische Fahrzeuge is located in a car park. Or, more precisely, in the Stern Garage, one of Germany’s oldest surviving multistorey car parks, built in 1928.

As an industrial metropolis, Chemnitz attracted many industrialists, who made their homes here. They expressed their success by building prestigious company headquarters, elegant art nouveau villas and elaborately decorated buildings in the Gründerzeit style. Often translated as “Founding Epoch”, this term refers to a period of economic growth in the 19th century. As a result, the Kaßberg neighbourhood is now one of the largest cohesive examples of art nouveau and Gründerzeit architecture in Europe.

Entire streets are resplendent with lovingly detailed decorative façades. In a central and elevated location, today the district is a sought-after residential address, and not only for young families – because here every culinary desire is catered for.

4 - MARIANNE-BRANDT-HAUS (MARIANNE BRANDT HOUSE) Heinrich-Beck-Straße 22

The property, in which Bauhaus artist Marianne Brandt lived from 1954 to 1976, was built by Paul Doederlein in 1889 in the NeoRenaissance style. Today, it is home to the offices of the MarianneBrandt-Gesellschaft, the society devoted to preserving the artist’s legacy, with two gallery rooms presenting a multifaceted account of the artist’s life and work.

5 - MAJOLICA HOUSES Barbarossastraße 48-52

The architect and property developer Reinhold Siebert built the “Majolica houses” in 1897-98 almost on the summit of the Kaßberg as early art nouveau buildings. These town houses are amongst the most striking buildings in the city and gems of urban architecture.

6 - HELENENHOF W.-Oertel-Straße/E.-Mühsam-Straße/G.-Landgraf-Straße The Helenenhof housing complex was built in 1926-27 by a cooperative of craftsmen and architects. It is considered a forerunner of the lavish buildings built in the 1920s.

4 1 - VILLA RICHARD HARTMANN Kaßbergstraße 36 One of the city’s most famous industrialists was Richard Hartmann. He has gone down in history as the “Locomotive King”, and his legacy includes the industrialist’s villa erected in 1868. This glorious symbol of the Hartmann empire served as a director’s villa from 1890 until 1930. From 1956 onwards, it has been used as a youth centre.

7 - KYFFHÄUSERBURG (KYFFHÄUSER CASTLE) Hübschmannstraße 19 This ensemble was erected in 1909-10 in the Wilhelminian spirit – with allusions to the legend of Barbarossa, the great emperor said not to be dead but asleep under the Kyffhäuser Hills. The art nouveau “fairy tale houses” are located very close by at Gustav-Adolf-Straße 23-25.

More than architecture

The Kaßberg is not only treasured for its architecture – it also enjoys great popularity as a place where people can get together. It is home to some exclusive shops and small stores, such as the stationer Haamit (see page 37 for more information). If you have some spare time after your tour or would like to take a break along the way, then pay a visit to Emmas Onkel. As cosy as your living room, with food as delicious as Nana’s: coffee, tea and cakes, but also hearty snacks for rumbling stomachs. And if you stay out a little later, then you’re sure to find the perfect drink to round off your evening on the cocktail menu at Maroon.

Dating from 1904, this building is a masterpiece of Gothic façade ornamentation. Intricate glass mosaics, the coats of arms of Saxony and Chemnitz, and postal and telegraphic symbols reference its history.

Whether you arrive by car or train, or even on foot, before you have even reached the city with its rich industrial heritage, you will have already passed through a cultural region shaped by a host of tourist attractions, with the city itself at its centre. And this is why Chemnitz’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2025 also involves and enjoys the support of many municipalities within the region. The diverse cultural attractions of the surrounding region correspond closely to those of the city itself, and therefore this support is expressed in diverse ways. With its joint application, the Chemnitz cultural region is releasing its potential and becoming even more closely allied with Europe.

The history of the city and the region might have evolved differently if it had not followed a spirit of cultural openness and curiosity when it departed from the path towards its first identity – as an impressive industrial metropolis, which is perhaps still how the city is best known. Over the centuries, the city grew into a champion of German industry, a path that continued into the 20th century. This development can be traced back in part to an episode in history: seven Macedonian cloth merchants wanted to stay in Chemnitz, then still very much a medieval town. They initially intended to stay only briefly. Having been turned away from Leipzig and Halle an der Saale, amongst other places, and heading back to their homeland, they found a peaceful and friendly welcome in Chemnitz. This prompted them to try once again to sell their wares to the people. The rest of the story, and the departure mentioned above from the path that took Chemnitz from a small medieval town to an impressive Saxon industrial metropolis, can be summed up as follows: until this very day, the city and region exhibit a deep-rooted culture of curiosity and a pioneering spirit. This means that its people are always able to see opportunities as they arise and later, if things get tough again, to find an even better path to follow, not just once, but time and again.

Curiosity about the Macedonian merchants’ fabrics sewed the seed of an idea: why shouldn’t the people of Chemnitz produce cloth themselves as well? And so weaving mills appeared in the city on the banks of the River Chemnitz and nearby. Not only because the rivers, such as the Zschopau or the Zwickauer Mulde, flowed picturesquely through natural beauty in towns like Flöha, Aue-Bad Schlema, Mittweida, Burgstädt and Hainichen. But rather because their residents learned from the example of nearby Chemnitz and quickly realised that these rivers harboured energy which could power motion and drive machinery – and that making textiles could be a profitable trade. For this reason, there are now monuments to former cotton spinning mills and weaving mills all over Chemnitz and the region, rightly commemorating this industrial heritage. Some are impressive, such as the mill in Hohenfichte, close to the small town of Augustusburg, or in the previously mentioned Flöha, where the building still serves as the town’s cultural centre, with a variety of offerings.

The idea that they themselves could build the weaving looms and later spinning machines, that they could produce the tools to build them and draw new economic strength and new ideas from each further development – this is simply the logical consequence and evidence of the culture of invention that is a Chemnitz speciality. This economic strength virtually predestined the city to become home to all kinds of art and artistic activity. This forms another aspect of Chemnitz’s identity, and not only because of the city’s important tradition of patronage. This Chemnitz identity is another strong reason why the city’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2025 is unmistakably linked with the pioneering spirit exhibited here and throughout the region.

If we start from the assumption that the current transformations represent the gradual opening of a new chapter in the industrial heritage of the city and region, this completes the circle – everything is always in motion.

Close to the Chemnitz cultural region is the Mining Cultural Landscape Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří, which was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortuitous proximity is due to conditions that complemented each other despite being very different. The Erzgebirge region, famous for its role in the history of the origins of the American dollar and for the importance of light in its cultural history, has very similar tales to tell to those of the Chemnitz region. These stories of the Erzgebirge, rooted in its mining tradition, give us a wider perspective that encompasses whole swathes of a cultural landscape. And thus the two regions come together beautifully in their history, culture and art.

According to satellite imagery, almost 80 per cent of Chemnitz is green space. The city no longer deserves its former nickname of “sooty Chemnitz”; the pollution has vanished along with the chimneys. The city is now able to draw breath, and its green lungs spread over 1,000 hectares – that equates to 60 square metres each resident. So there’s plenty of space for passionate picnickers, fitness fanatics, blissed-out barbecuers, Schloßteich rowers or whatever else might take your fancy in the great outdoors. There is, however, one drawback: the urban setting means that the parkland is broken up every now and again by buildings and streets, and so too is the Stadtpark. But at six kilometres in length, it is still one-third larger than New York’s Central Park.

Culture and golf in the south

Picturesque. This single word is actually all we need to describe Wasserschloß Klaffenbach, surrounded by an artificial lake and parkland. A particularly striking feature of the 16th-century square-set, four-storey Renaissance castle is its unique roof in the form of two crossed ogee arches. If you look at it carefully, you can make out upturned ships’ hulls in the structure. The castle’s full beauty is revealed once you step through the portal into the courtyard. Directly opposite, the Golfclub awaits with its panorama course and castle course, as well as two routes to the 18th hole. But beforehand, it’s worth briefly leaving your golf clubs at the clubhouse and strolling around the castle grounds. As you browse around the studios and creative shops, an afternoon’s golfing can sometimes turn into a craft workshop, followed by a concert in the castle courtyard.

Oh yes, and please watch out for children throwing rose petals! The Wasserschloß is one of the most popular wedding venues in Chemnitz.

Relaxation in west Chemnitz

Visit a castle, go swimming, free your soul The west of Chemnitz has a wild and romantic feel: this is where Burg Rabenstein, the smallest medieval castle in Saxony, sits proud on its rocky pedestal. The castle is believed to have been built around 1170 and is first mentioned in the historical record in 1336. The popular day-trip destination and much-loved subject for photographs leaves lasting impressions on visitors. And this is no wonder when you remember that one of the city’s greatest sons, Hans Carl von Carlowitz, who would go on to become chief inspector of mines and the founder of sustainability, was born here in 1645. Here, you can sometimes see jousting and medieval weddings.

The baroque palace SchloĂ&#x; Rabenstein slightly further uphill now shines with new splendour. It was built in 1776 by the then owner of the castle, Johann Georg Siegert, as a family residence. Today, thanks to the lovingly detailed restoration work, hotel guests and restaurant diners can now enjoy pampering in the bedrooms and salons. It makes a good starting point for further exploration as well.

And anyone in need of refreshment and a break after a visit to the palace will find the ideal place just above the castle. The Golfbad Gesundheitspark health park tempts visitors with its sauna and wellness facilities, and a little further uphill, the Stausee Oberrabenstein reservoir offers large sunbathing areas and plenty of water for bathers. The popular natural open-air pool was opened back in 1976 as a reservoir to protect against flooding. Today, its unspoilt beauty and idyllic location make it the ideal spot for sun worshippers, paddlers and, in a separate area, nudists.

But the extensive woodland surrounding the Stausee has even more activities in store. In addition to the excellent network of walking and cycling paths, mountain bikers will also find interesting trails to explore even when the annual MTB highlight Heavy24 is not being hosted. Those with a head for heights will find challenges on the Kletterwald (Treetop Rope Course), and nature lovers will adore the native species in the Wildgatter Oberrabenstein (Oberrabenstein Game Reserve). For those who prefer their animals more amphibious or more international, a detour to the city’s zoo, Tierpark Chemnitz, and its vivarium is well worth it.

To the north, in and on the water

By bicycle through the Chemnitztal and Muldental valleys The great thing about rivers is that they flow through valleys. So when, as is the case in the Chemnitz valley, a cycle route runs directly alongside a river, there are very few hills to worry about. There is absolutely no obstacle to taking a relaxed cycle tour northwards.

The route partly follows old railway embankments, and it’s well worth making small detours along the way, for example to the Taurasteinturm (Taurastein Tower) or the small nature reserve Am Schusterstein.

And because the River Chemnitz flows into the Zwickauer Mulde shortly before Wechselburg, you can also pedal on a short way to Rochlitz, or change your mode of transport at the bridge in Wechselburg and transfer to a canoe or inflatable boat. But only after first taking a short detour to the Benedictine Monastery in Wechselburg, , which has been in use again as a monastery by the Benedictines themselves since 1993. The late Romanesque basilica is considered to be one of the best-preserved major Romanesque buildings in the region. In Rochlitz, the imposing castle awaits paddlers and pedallers eager for experiences. Its themed tours are especially popular, above all Stories and Histories of the Smallest Room. Anyone who wrinkles up their nose at this can find out all about the history of the castle and its strong women in the permanent exhibition.

Right at the heart of things

Museum für Naturkunde (Museum of Natural History) The Petrified Forest stands right in the middle of the Kulturkaufhaus DAS tietz (DAS tietz Cultural Centre) at the heart of Chemnitz. It is part of the Sterzeleanum, one of the most valuable collections of fossilised plants and the major attraction of the Museum für Naturkunde. Originating from a donation to the city by Chemnitz residents with an interest in natural history, today it is a modern museum, housing an important collection of paleobotanical writings, an insectarium and a volcano which erupts every hour. The museum also runs an excavation site, which is open to visitors, on the Sonnenberg.

Wheels, spokes, feet & fingertips It might sound surprising, but we even have to start with (industrial) history when it comes to extreme and adventure sports in Chemnitz. The city that once produced world-famous bicycle brands such as Wanderer, Presto and Diamant is now fostering highly celebrated cyclists, mountain bikers and climbers. They have sought out and established their own very personal and entirely new fields of activity.

An interesting fact about Konkordiapark: it owes its name to the industrialist Johann von Zimmermann, who founded the Erste Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik (First Machine-Tool Factory, ERMAFA) in Chemnitz in 1839, and the corporation Konkordia-Aktien-Gesellschaft in 1874.

The ERMAFA buildings opposite the park have now been repurposed for commercial use. A beautiful view of the park and the ERMAFA buildings is the reward for those who make it to the top of the wall in the climbing hall opposite.

Around the lake Not all sportspeople can manage the strenuous circuits around the Stausee Oberrabenstein reservoir.

The 24-hour mountain bike race Heavy24 is considered to be one of Germany’s toughest races. The route and the weather challenge both man and material, sometimes pushing both beyond their limits. But this is the very attraction of this race, which has now established itself as one of the largest events of its kind in Germany and as a firm fixture on the mountain biking calendar.

Lukas Knopf loves getting mucky and making daredevil leaps over bumps and any other kind of obstacle you can imagine. The mountain biker and slopestyler also shares all his antics publicly on YouTube. He is ranked among the world’s best slopestylers. He tried out his first jumps and tricks in the skating hall in the Schönherrfabrik, the former Schönherr Factory, and developed his skills at the skate spots in Chemnitz – so the dirt track in Konkordiapark has certainly played a part in his success. The Skatepark is a success story in itself. It all started around the year 2000 with a bit of mud – a small dirt track for BMX riders, which is still well used and looked after by the bikers today. The City of Chemnitz already had plans for a bigger skatepark, and the bikers were delighted to get involved. A first park was built with wooden ramps. Then in 201314, the Skatepark was completely redesigned, with the old wooden ramps making way for a paradise for boarders and bikers – made entirely of concrete and even including a pool. Fans of the park consider it to be unique in Germany because of its versatility, since it is equally suitable for beginners and professionals, skateboarders, roller skaters, BMX bikers and scooter riders, and is used by everyone accordingly. Over the years, further additions to the site have included a basketball court, a parkour practice area, a playing field, a giant art installation which locals have nicknamed the “bird’s nest” and, last but not least, a wild flower meadow.

Heavy 24 25 – 27 June 2021 | www.mtb-chemnitz.de Onwards and upwards Mountain climbing on two wheels: during the Fichtelberg Radmarathon (Fichtelberg Cycling Marathon), around 900 cyclists who have been training hard come from all over Germany and push themselves on the ride from Chemnitz up to Saxony’s highest mountain, the Fichtelberg. After covering around 90 kilometres and climbing an altitude of over 1,800 metres, they are rewarded with a breathtaking view over the Erzgebirge Mountains.

The site rapidly became popular and has now achieved worldwide recognition in the skating scene. It plays host to various skate events and competitions. One of these is the Bring da Truckaz festival, which has grown into Germany’s largest independent skateboarding competition – with international contestants and a fringe programme of music. The Spotfight is a particular challenge for the BMX community. Since 2017, this event has united the oldest spot at the Jugendklub BPlan youth club, an L-shaped mini ramp, with the largest. A spontaneous visit to the park is always worthwhile and can be perfectly combined with a tour of the Schloßteich (Castle Pond) and the Schloßviertel district, with or without skates or spokes.

Rope up: climbing Chemnitz Our city is a place of mutually inspiring contrasts.

If they haven’t learnt this already, visitors will find it out when they try their hand at bouldering, climbing or mountaineering. At first glance, there may appear to be little sign that Chemnitz has been the home of a strong climbing scene for several decades now and that bouldering – supposedly a leisure trend – has its own particular history here.

However, if you look beyond the limits of the city and consider Chemnitz as just a starting point for explorations with your ropes and climbing shoes, then you will quickly come to understand why this is the case. Since it is only half an hour by car to the Greifensteine and the “Wolkenstein Switzerland”, which is also blessed with challenging climbing routes and considered an insider tip amongst ambitious climbers, climbing fans are sure to enjoy a mental and physical workout here. By contrast with the “soft” sandstone further to the east in what is known as the “Saxon Switzerland”, the gneiss and granite of the Erzgebirge Mountains offer an entirely different type of “hard” boulder to conquer, and not only from a geological perspective. It is no surprise that nationally and internationally renowned extreme mountaineer Jörg Stingl, born and bred in the Saxon capital, Dresden, trained in the surrounding climbing areas before he became the first German mountaineer to pay a personal visit to the highest mountain on each of the seven continents in his Seven Summits attempt. He even climbed Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. It’s only logical therefore that Chemnitz has two establishments with the space and the routes for this type of upwardly mobile activity – the bouldering hall in Altchemnitz and the Kletterzentrum climbing centre in Konkordiapark.

Boulderlounge Chemnitz (Chemnitz Bouldering Lounge)

Boulderlounge Chemnitz (Chemnitz Bouldering Lounge) Bouldering and climbing are like two sisters who could not be more different. Yet bouldering has been a recognised and separate discipline within sport climbing since 1970, with the first bouldering competitions being hosted during the Climbing World Championships in Wintherthur in 1990.

Unlike traditional sport climbing, in bouldering routes are followed without climbing ropes or harnesses as a matter of principle. The aim is not to reach a peak, but rather to climb a path along natural rock faces or even artificial faces at jumping height, without serious risk of injury. Its low access threshold has meant that interest in bouldering has been growing constantly since the 1990s, and Chemnitz has had a bouldering lounge since 2010.

Still typical of Chemnitz: the popular indoor bouldering venue has a unique setting in a former industrial complex, the Spinnereimaschinenbau, the old spinning machine factory on Altchemnitzer Straße. In a stark yet inviting atmosphere, routes of widely varying levels of difficulty run beneath a factory clock, which seems to have fallen through a crack in time, and under disused crane equipment.

Today, its approximately 850 square metres of space are ideal for both amateur climbers and sportspeople who require a high level of difficulty. Around 150 routes of six different difficulty levels mean that there is something for every interest and all abilities. Last but not least, small and very small climbers can also test out their own climbing abilities in the

children’s climbing area, measuring approximately 250 square metres.

Tom Petzold is one of the owners of Boulderlounge, which is part of a larger company within the bouldering sector. When you listen to him speak, you understand immediately why people are so enthusiastic about this sport, which, unlike pure sport climbing, is practised entirely solo and without a climbing partner. As Petzold explains, bouldering is a type of fitness activity that is closer to going to the gym than to trampoline parks, which are also enjoying a boom in popularity. “We get many visitors,” says Petzold, “who come to us regularly once or even several times a week.” In another example of the Chemnitz spirit of invention, he recounts how his group of climbing friends used to drive to Dresden or Leipzig in their free time and in winter to practise their sport in the indoor facilities there. Then they went on the hunt for a space in Chemnitz and found one in the site of the former Spinnereimaschinenbau. At the beginning, they only built the first routes for their own enjoyment.

Today, it’s an entirely different story, and the Blocz group of companies, to which Boulderlounge belongs, operates worldwide. With a workforce of around 170, the company is dedicated to the production, sale and construction of bouldering walls, as well as operating or owning a stake in bouldering halls in Germany and all over the world.

Kletterzentrum Chemnitz (Chemnitz Climbing Centre) Another indoor climbing space can be found in the Kletterzentrum below the Schloßberg, very close to one of the most popular outdoor leisure areas in the city, Konkordiapark. It’s about routes and paths here, too, some of which are screwed into new positions every week. One thing you are sure to notice: the routes go considerably higher, and ropes and harnesses are virtually essential. Some of the paths demand a high level of skill of climbers, and, as a compulsory safety measure, no one is allowed to climb here without a climbing partner. But everyone starts out young and cautious sometime, so there is a children’s climbing area with a bouldering cave, jungle wall and balancing path. The centre also offers various courses, ranging from basic instruction for beginners through to technical and lead climbing courses.

DER FLEISCHLADEN

DELICATESSEN & RESTAURANT Meat in all its glory: even by its very name, Der Fleischladen (The Meat Shop) differs from conventional butchers or, to put it more bluntly, meat sellers. It is more of a boutique of pleasure than a fine foods store. Located on Hermannstraße in Chemnitz, it is in close proximity to the urban hotspot of the Brühl.

Products are selected for sale with what the shop terms sensitivity and understanding, or made into diverse delicacies in its in-house restaurant. And the principle that nothing is left over is not only a matter of taste, but epitomises the concept of sustainability. The products are also sourced fairly, with the meat coming directly from freerange producers. You enter this temple of carnivorous desires driven by the anticipation of pleasure and leave it with satisfying feelings in the stomach, on the tongue and on the conscience.

BOHNENMEISTER COFFEE ROASTERS

One of the most beautiful of scents: when someone in need of a caffeine fix enters the Bohnenmeister coffee roasters in the Wirkbau, they are immediately and softly enveloped in its distinctive aroma.

The premises of the coffee roasters alone could be described as awe-inspiring and, above all, classy: it can be found nestled directly under the imposing bell tower of the Wirkmaschinenbau, a former industrial building that is now being reused for a diversity of cultural and commercial purposes. Bohnenmeister offers everything you could ever wish for when it comes to inspiring, steaming drinks. It principally roasts and serves coffea arabica beans. Customers can also purchase special coffees for different methods of preparation, as well as extremely unusual coffee utensils. And so it is: at some point you have to leave this aromatic realm again, but not without a little longing for pleasure filling your heart even as you leave.

EMMAS ONKEL Now refurbished but retaining its original character, Emmas Onkel didn’t have to fight hard to regain its original custom on the Kaßberg after its renovation. Home-baked cakes, home-made ice cream and spontaneous happiness are all on the menu at the corner of Weststraße and Ulmenstraße. Customers can put together a sausage snack for a merry evening from the freshly painted menu board; vegetarian and vegan delicacies are also served. The inspiration for Emmas Onkel came from the unusual idea of selling Italian coffee from a stylishly converted trailer. The trailer still exists. It is to be found at the heart of the numerous city centre events that Emmas Onkel supplies with tasty snacks and quality coffee. Speaking of events, twice a year, Emmas Onkel plays a central role in two festivals that have achieved fame beyond the Kaßberg neighbourhood: the 100-Meter-Weihnachtsmarkt Christmas market and the 100-Meter-Sommer in summer are hosted by the bookshop Lessing und Kompanie and the Badische Winzerstube wine bar in the immediate vicinity of Emmas Onkel, and are highlights on the Chemnitz events calendar.

The offerings all go perfectly with the brewhouse atmosphere, however, and as a result you leave the establishment hours later with a sense of satisfaction at time well spent on good conversation, good beer and good, hearty food.

SCHALOM RESTAURANT

Attractive on the outside, cosy and hospitable inside: as the only kosher restaurant in the region, Schalom, located on the edge of the Brühl, has had an eventful history. It delights diners with its authentic kosher cuisine and Jewish customs. The owner also has plenty of stories to tell about Jewish life in Chemnitz. The chefs know where their ingredients come from, and not only because they follow kosher rules.

Highly recommended: the restaurant’s own Simcha beer. Its name means “happiness” in Hebrew, and trying it here is a must.
