UNLEASHING THE HEALING POWER OF LAUGHTER

They say laughter is the best medicine

Well, yes, it is! Most people are currently suffering If you look around, listen, and truly observe people, you can see most people look like they are not having the best time of their lives.

Recently, I was afforded another year on this Earth and I’m so grateful However, my body has not caught up to the gratitude yet! My body sometimes takes it worse than I care to admit. Aching and grinding, but at least I am alive. I can always warm it up to get ready to move it in the fashion she likes!

Anyways, I realize that Birthdays are a celebration But really, we should celebrate every day for a few different reasons!

We have the day! Be present. You will soon notice a change in hope you show up and how you are in control of your life. Being present is often what I speak about when referencing laughter In Laughter Yoga, we do breathe and laughter exercises Here’s the thing, with breathing, you are present We can’t be in the past or in the future when you sit down and truly take time to be intentional and breathe. It’s also a choice to breathe and laugh. Similar in how we get the choice to give into stress or not. Often times, people worry about the past and the “Would’ve,” “Could’ve,” or “Should’ve ” Sadly, once things are in the past, you can’t change them You can only make the choice to be present and change what you can now

Stop the worrying! As for the future, we can’t do anything about it, unfortunately. When you chose to worry, you are saying yes to struggle, strife, and uncertainty. And honestly! There are people who worry about something even when there is nothing to worry about or nothing that can be done! So, I suggest you set a time limit for your worrying Give yourself a brief amount of time, and then get back to the present moment.

See the Present as a Gift It’s one that you’ll never get back As I grow seasoned, (I like saying that because old makes you feel worn out! Like being thrown away!), I enjoy more laughter and humor. It’s added many things to my day and those around me. You are a product of those around you.

At this point in my life, I only choose laughter0-filled people and those who want the best for me I have to say, the best is now always perfect, and to be honest, perfect is not what most people remember. Most people remember the unusual, quirky surprises and even the mishaps. It’s because they are not the same old; same old. If you can remember these and laugh at these it will bring a different mindset and more joy into your life

Today, I am a Laughter Yoga Teacher. Often, the best laughter exercises are the ones where you are enjoying the everyday routine and putting a laughter twist. For instance, how many times of a day do you wash your hands? You can wash your hands and laugh! This is a great way to incorporate more laughter and only takes 20 seconds The average is 10 times a day 200 seconds of laughter, giving you that little extra boost of happy hormones. So, you could do that with washing the dishes, taking a shower, or in the car commuting, you can search out times to laugh or smile, putting happy chemicals in your body

I wish all of you Happy Birthdays And Happy Days, every single day Even more importantly, remember the present of today. You can choose to take the paper off slowly or with fun and excitement. My challenge for you is for one week to write down give things that had happened in your day that was surprising, unusual, funny, different and see where you are in a week Then the next week try to wash your hands with laughter and see how your days will change

It’s reported to me those who have accepted this challenge have noticed a difference.

HAVEN COLLECTIVE: CREATING CONNECTION & SUPPORTING GROWTH

1. Throughout this issue of Vision Made Magazine, we are highlighting and spotlighting the powerful contributions of women in Ohio. Behind Haven Collective, who is Melissa and Danielle? A business is only as powerful as the wonderful women behind it-- so let your light shine! Share a glimpse of who Melissa and Danielle are behind closed doors.

The two of us met in graduate school at The Ohio State University and honestly, we became fast friends immediately So, what started as classmates in the MBA program, turned into a lifelong friendship 8 years later, we joined forces to bring Haven Collective to life, creating the space, community, and support system for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and side hustlers to get sh*t done, find balance, and conquer the world.

In addition to running Haven, we are both wives and mothers

A little more about each of us:

Melissa Blackburn is the Co-Creator of Haven Collective, a coworking space and community in Columbus, Ohio with two locations for freelancers, small businesses, and work-from-home professionals to connect, grow, and achieve their dreams

Prior to opening Haven, Melissa spent 17 years sharpening her operations and customer experience skills by managing large teams within the direct marketing, finance, and tech startup industries. Her motivational management style inspired her teams to crush goals to bring new products and services to market Melissa’s proven track record of scaling up while keeping an eye on the bottom line has been a significant factor in Haven’s success

Melissa is passionate about small businesses and startups. She leans on her cross-functional experience to support entrepreneurs inside and outside the Haven community through business coaching and mentorship, becoming the business partner that so many founders need to take their businesses to the next level In order to support even more Haven members, Melissa created a group mastermind program where members learn and grow together as a Collective.

Beyond Haven, Melissa is a public speaker who shares her small business insights and business best practices to share her knowledge with the broader Columbus community

Danielle Lim is the Co-Creator of Haven Collective, a coworking space and community in Columbus, Ohio with two locations for freelancers, small businesses, and workfrom-home professionals to connect, grow, and achieve their dreams

Prior to opening Haven, Danielle honed her project management and marketing skills in the venture capital and sustainability industries Most of her 20-year career was spent working-from-home where she gained an intimate understanding of the struggles associated with this isolation and virtual work environment

While experiencing some of those struggles, Danielle sought out growth opportunities beyond her day job that would also allow her the opportunity to bring people together She attended The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business to complete her MBA in Enterprise Sustainability, became a Project Management Professional, joined the boards of multiple non-profits, and grew Green Columbus into the largest volunteer community focused on Earth Day in the world as President of the Board. She continues to give back as Advisory Board Member to Green Columbus

Danielle’s able to draw from her experience as she builds a thriving, connected, coworking community. Her connections within and around Columbus bring a dedicated and passionate network of individuals and companies that offer our Haven community with relationships and growth opportunities members need to succeed

2. On a fun and personal note, you are a tremendous part of the support system for business owners in Central Ohio. How does it feel to have personally impacted so many lives through opening Haven Collective? Has it been rewarding? What has been the emotional reward for the two of you? Do you ever sit back and celebrate the work and impact you've been able to make?

The biggest thrill for us comes when one of our members achieves their goals. For some, that includes growing to a sustainable level for themselves and their families. For others, it's moving up from membership to an office to call their own. We've built the space and the support services to give those flying solo or working remotely to have everything they need to succeed We probably don't spend as much time as we should reflect on our own successes because we've devoted our lives to the success of the Collective.

3. Can you share any success stories or testimonials from entrepreneurs, freelancers, or side hustlers who have been a part of Haven Collective? How has the space and community helped them in their professional journeys?

One of our original members, who joined us before our space officially opened, Beth Menduni, has grown significantly since starting her entrepreneurial journey Beth created a video testimonial for us that you can watch here Beth has grown by niching down, undergoing a rebrand, and opening a video studio since joining Haven in 2017 Watching Beth grow personally and professionally over the years has been a dream come true. We hope for every member is that they hit their stride and grow to their fullest potential.

4. What is your creative vision for Haven Collective moving forward? How do you see the impact growing and expanding? What is your plan to do so?

We've been trying to support more and more entrepreneurs in Central Ohio Over the years that has looked like additional space (opening our second location, The Haven Mansion, in 2019), additional support services (business coaching, mastermind groups, and events are all included with membership), and additional team members (we hired our first Community Manager last year to better support our community). This year, we're building out additional private office space in our Upper Arlington location so we can provide space for entrepreneurs looking for more privacy and a place to call their own We are also expanding our coaching team We now have experts in accounting, business law, strategy, operations, leadership, digital marketing, branding, social media, consumer insights, and wellness that are devoting time every month to one-on-one sessions with Haven members

During 2020, we were able to formalize the support services and start offering them virtually so that our community could be available to anyone from anywhere. That Community Membership has remained a popular choice for people on a tight budget and for people who don't need coworking space, just support

In the future, we would love to open a third location so there is a Haven Collective within a short drive to most all of Central Ohio. We think everyone deserves a haven away from home to get their best work done and to be surrounded by other entrepreneurs looking to connect and grow

5. In a Post-Covid World, Community is more important than ever. How is Haven Collective prioritizing Community?

Our business is built entirely on supporting our community We often ask our members what they need and because we listen and adjust based on their feedback, they give it freely That feedback provides us the opportunity to continue getting it right for our community. We create the events they want, connect people to one another, bring in the experts they need, and make changes in our space that encourage connection, collaboration, and growth

INSIGHTS OF MIKAYLA CHESS

1. Thank you for sharing your insights with us! We are so grateful This edition serves to highlight amazing women throughout the State of Ohio and their contributions to the Buckeye State we love. Do you have a favorite restaurant, attraction, or store?

When it comes to my favorite establishments in Ohio, being a Cincinnati native, I have a few go-to restaurants that never disappoint They include Skyline Chili, LaRosa’s Pizza, and Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. However, my culinary adventures have expanded beyond Cincinnati, and I have discovered a hidden gem in Columbus called Fork in Africa. Ohio has so many great restaurants it is truly hard to pick even a few. Exploring the diverse culinary scene in Ohio is an exciting endeavor, and I'm always eager to try new recommendations, I love to indulge in great-tasting meals!

Retail therapy is my go-to when I need a pick-me-up There are so many stores I could mention The thrill of finding one-of-a-kind clothing items is unmatched I have modeled for places like Chozen 4 You boutique and Mae by Lee, and when I can keep a few pieces, I am ecstatic. When in Columbus, I enjoy a quick trip to Easton to shop for well-known brands. I am open to exploring the rest of Ohio for one-of-a-kind clothes as I switch my wardrobe from less quantity to more quality!

Ohio is undoubtedly a treasure trove of incredible restaurants, attractions, and stores, and I am grateful to call it home!

3. Diving in the pageantry portion, how did you become involved in the pageantry circuit? What moment or experience inspired you to take the leap and begin competing?

I became involved in the pageantry circuit because I had a genuine passion for being the center of attention and making a positive impact It all started when I received a National American Miss (NAM) packet in the mail, and something inside me felt like it was a sign. With the encouragement of my loved ones, we decided to take the leap and sign me up for the competition. Little did I know, that decision would shape my path and become an important part of my journey.

From the moment I stepped onto that stage, I fell in love with pageantry The thrill of appearances, the opportunity to showcase my talents, and the platform to make a difference in the community captivated me. It was an experience like no other, and I realized that pageantry was more than just a competition it was a platform to inspire and empower others.

Throughout my pageant journey, I have been fortunate to have a strong support system, particularly my mom and aunt. These incredible women have been my guiding lights, inspiring me to embrace the pageant world and supporting me every step of the way. Their unwavering belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and make the most of my pageant experiences.

After my time with NAM, I conducted thorough research on various pageants and decided to continue my journey in the Miss Black Ohio USA system, both as a teen and later as an adult The Miss Black Ohio America system also caught my attention, as it provided a platform to showcase my unique qualities and advocate for causes close to my heart

The pageantry circuit has become an integral part of my life, allowing me to grow as an individual, develop my skills, and create lasting memories. The experiences I have gained and the impact I have made on others have solidified my love for pageantry. It is an honor to represent Ohio and be a role model for young girls and women who aspire to make a difference in their communities.

4. What are your aspirations and goals for your reign as far as social impact and community service? What does serving the Buckeye State mean to you?

My aspirations and goals for my reign revolve around my platform, which is centered on empowering everyone, especially young girls, through self-love and confidence. In today's world, social media anxiety, self-harm, selfdoubt, depression, and comparisons have become prevalent in the lives of young girls. It is my mission to make a positive impact on as many young ladies as possible through various community service initiatives.

One of my primary goals is to organize workshops, fashion shows, and educational programs that promote self-esteem, body positivity, and mental well-being. By providing a safe and supportive space, I aim to equip these girls with the tools they need to navigate the challenges they face and to instill in them a sense of empowerment. Moreover, I believe in the power of being a role model and leading by example, demonstrating to these young girls that they have the potential to achieve greatness.

To maximize the reach and effectiveness of my efforts, I plan to collaborate closely with nonprofits that share similar missions. By joining forces with organizations already making a positive impact in the community, we can amplify our collective efforts and bring about lasting change.

Serving the Buckeye State holds great significance to me. It means actively working towards helping, supporting, and empowering local girls and organizations within Ohio. It involves being present where I am most needed and making a difference in the lives of those around me. It is about maintaining a delicate balance between staying true to myself and being the person the community needs me to be.

I am grateful for the journey that started with that NAM packet and the continuous support of my loved ones It has shaped me into the confident, driven woman I am today, and I eagerly look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead in the world of pageantry

Being crowned and representing the Buckeye State is a privilege and an opportunity to contribute to the betterment of my community It is a responsibility that I wholeheartedly embrace, and I am committed to dedicating my time, energy, and resources to serving and uplifting others Throughout my reign, I hope to leave a lasting impact, inspire positive change, and create a ripple effect of empowerment that extends far beyond my time as a titleholder

5. Has there been a funny or heartwarming moment during your reign that you'd like to share?

13

During my reign, I have had the incredible opportunity to visit over 30 schools and collaborate with the Girl Scouts of Southwest Ohio. Each of these experiences holds a special place in my heart as they have been filled with unforgettable moments, funny and heartwarming alike. The young girls I've had the pleasure of meeting possess an abundance of personality, incredible stories, and an unwavering sense of optimism that truly warms your heart.

One particular moment that stands out is when I was visiting a school, and a talented fifth-grade girl drew an absolutely phenomenal picture of me It was such a thoughtful and artistic gesture that touched me deeply I still have that picture to this day as a cherished keepsake

Moreover, the letters I have received from these remarkable girls and the sweet hugs they've given me have brought immeasurable joy to my heart. Hearing them express sentiments like "I feel loved and confident because of you" or "I want to be just like you when I grow up" truly reinforces the impact I am striving to make. It is incredibly humbling and inspiring to know I am making a positive difference in their lives.

One of my favorite activities with the girls is showing them how to pick up items off the floor while wearing a crown. It may seem simple, but it never fails to bring about the cutest and funniest moments. The sheer delight on their faces as they navigate this seemingly glamorous task with their newfound "royal skills" is priceless. It's in these lighthearted moments that connections are formed, and laughter becomes the universal language of joy.

These heartwarming and funny moments have been a constant reminder of the immense joy and fulfillment that comes from serving as a role model and making a positive impact in the lives of young girls. Each encounter is a precious reminder of why I embarked on this journey and a testament to the incredible potential within each and every one of these young individuals

6. What advice would you give to young ladies who are considering pursuing pageantry as an avenue for personal development? How have you taken that own advice to heart?

First and foremost, understand that confidence is not something that happens overnight, and it may not always be constant. It's essential to practice building your confidence every day, and over time, it will become easier. However, there will be days when your confidence may not be as high, and that's okay. Remember that you're only human, and it happens to everyone. The key is to continue believing in yourself and pushing forward, even on those challenging days.

Secondly, remember that your journey is unique to you. Avoid comparing yourself to other girls in the pageant world or life. You have something special and unique to offer, so highlight your individuality not only in pageantry but also in every aspect of your life. Embrace your strengths, talents, and passions, and let them shine.

Additionally, it's crucial to find a strong support system Surround yourself with people who genuinely care about your growth and success Seek out individuals who will encourage you but also “Keep it real” with you by providing honest feedback to help you grow A supportive circle of friends, family, and mentors will be instrumental in achieving your goals and becoming the best version of yourself

As for myself, I take this advice to heart every single day. I wake up and actively work on building my confidence, especially during the ups and downs of life. I focus on making comparisons only to myself, comparing my progress to who I was yesterday, last month, or last year. I recognize that personal growth is a continuous journey, and my only competition is myself.

Moreover, I have consciously surrounded myself with people who genuinely support and uplift me. They help me stay grounded, provide guidance when needed, and help me become the best version of myself. Pageantry is about sisterhood, so finding a

TALKING WITH VANESSA KING

1. Throughout this issue of Vision Made Magazine, we are seeking to spotlight powerful women throughout Ohio. As the Executive Director of the Miss Black Ohio USA Scholarship Pageant, you are providing amazing opportunities to young ladies in Ohio. How does it feel to give back to the Buckeye State?

Knowing that I can make a difference in the lives of others is a great feeling! I love following our former queens and seeing their success and watching them make differences in their communities.

2. As someone who competed in Pageants herself, I know that Executive Directors can make a huge impact on the life of young ladies. What professional and personal values do you seek to instill in the young ladies who compete in the pageants?

I seek to instill selflessness and humility in all those competing in pageants. I let them know that working together to reach a common goal is very important as what we do as individuals affects us as a group.

3. What would you say to a young lady on the fence about competing in a Pageant?

I would tell them that pageants have been given a bad name. They are not looking for someone with just a beautiful face. We look for someone who is the overall package, inner beauty and intelligence. Outer beauty is an added asset. Pageants teach you discipline and build self-esteem, interview skills, poise, and a lot of other things that are or will be needed in everyday life. Being a pageant titleholder is not just about the crown on your head, it takes a lot of work, it is a job and requires their dedication and time to fulfill all the duties required of them. I would tell them to do research on the pageant they are interested in as every pageant looks for different qualities in their titleholders and to also make sure the pageant's values are the same as theirs.

4. In addition to your pageant director work, you are the founder of Queen Nefertiti Productions Inc. Share the story and symbolism behind your company.

Queen Nefertiti Productions is named after Queen Nefertiti as she was not only known for her beauty, but she was the most influential woman in Egypt for over a decade, as she reigned alongside her husband One of our goals is to teach participants to be influential and to recognize the beauty they each possess inside

5. Here at Vision Made, we would love to know who Vanessa is behind the scenes. What projects and goals do you have for the upcoming five years? We will be certain to look out for them!

Behind the scenes, I am the same as you see in the forefront I am a very caring and giving person that has a passion for helping others I don't require any of my participants or titleholders to do anything that I wouldn't do I still compete in pageants myself and volunteer in my community, just as they do I work hard and sometimes feel like giving up What keeps me going is knowing the difference I have and will continue to make in the lives of others

16
EMPOWHER WORLD

For the next five years, I want to continue to build the pageants we operate. I hope to obtain the funding needed through partnerships with businesses and individuals to build the Queen Nefertiti Productions brand so that we become the pageants everyone talks about and wants to be part of, and I want to be able to provide large scholarships to our winners. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and need your support to reach our goals. So, watch for our pageants and fundraising events so that you support us!

6. Is there anything else you would like to add? Thank you for the honoring of allowing us to interview you!

Our next pageant competition is we have scheduled is the Miss Black Ohio USA Scholarship Pageant It is planned for October 7, 2023, in Columbus We are seeking contestants (ages 14-45), partners (cash and in-kind), vendors, program book advertisers and volunteers to make the pageant a success Our Teen, Miss and Ms winners will go on to compete at the Miss Black USA national pageant for their age group in Washington, DC in August 2024. Those seeking information about the Ohio pageant can send me an email to MissBlackOhioUSADirector@gmail.com and indicate their area or areas of interest.

MOMPRENEURS' SUPERPOWER

TURNING CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES

Hospital, battling a condition that doctors couldn't yet name Stuck in the gridlock of Southern California traffic, the piercing sirens of the ambulance provided a stark contrast to the lifeless gaze in my son's eyes.

Life had dealt us a severe blow, but little did I know it then that this was just the beginning of a journey that would transform my life. Becoming a full-time caregiver, I chose to stay by my son's side during his treatment, living in the hospital for five relentless months. But life had to go on and bills had to be paid’ so from the side of my son's hospital bed, I launched a networking marketing business. That was thirteen years ago. Since then, I've learned what it means to be a mom, raising a special needs child and juggling multiple businesses from home.

A 2019 Census report indicated that there are over three million children with disabilities in the United States, with many moms facing an overwhelming list of responsibilities. Along with regular parenting tasks, these mothers navigate medical appointments, therapy sessions, medication regimes, 504s/IEPs meetings, and a seemingly endless cycle of paperwork and phone calls.

The journey is filled with emotional stress, financial strain, time constraints, and a feeling of social isolation Mothers often struggle with the initial diagnosis, an uncertain future, endless therapies, and the extensive care that their child requires It's easy for your identity to blur and your world to shrink to the point that you are “just” a caregiver

Moms raising special needs children are naturally creative, often finding innovative solutions to accommodate their children’s unique needs This creativity can form the foundation for distinctive business ideas They learn to be resourceful, maximizing the use of available resources - a skill that is highly beneficial in business

Life with a special needs child is a moving target; conditions and requirements change frequently, necessitating adaptability Adaptability is equally valuable in the ever-changing business environment Additionally, managing a wide range of needs and tasks becomes second nature, shaping the new skill of effective task management.

What I've discovered over the years is that resilience is a superpower. The resilience that helps us navigate the challenges of raising our special needs children can be harnessed to create thriving businesses. Creativity, resourcefulness, adaptability, and effective task management are the superpowers that moms like us have developed.

EMPOWHER WORLD 18
Remember, you already have everything it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

Here are simple steps to leverage these strengths into a purpose-driven business:

Step 1: Embrace creativity: Recognize that the creative solutions you've developed for your child can apply to business as well. Start brainstorming how these innovative strategies might translate into a unique business idea. You might be surprised to discover the wealth of ideas that surface.

Step 2: Utilize resourcefulness. Resourcefulness has become your second nature. Use it in planning and developing your business. Do you need certain skills? There might be an online course for that. Limited budget? Bootstrap and start small: consider crowdfunding or apply for grants. Reach out to your network and don’t hesitate to ask for help

Step 3: Adaptability is your asset: Just as you've adapted to your child's evolving needs, your business will also need to adapt to the changing marketplace Be prepared to pivot and see this as an opportunity rather than a setback The ability to adjust to new circumstances is a massive asset in the entrepreneurial world

Step 4: Master task management: Apply the skills you've sharpen while managing a wide range of needs and tasks in the care of your child. Break down your business plan into manageable tasks and tackle them one at a time. Prioritize, delegate where possible, and remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.

Step 5: Ignite your passion: Ensure the business you are creating is something you are passionate about and gives you a sense of purpose. This passion will be your fuel when times get tough; it will shine through your work, attracting customers and clients who connect with your vision.

In the midst of the toughest season of my life, I found my purpose - the Mompreneur Conversations Network and TV Show It is a safe place for moms of special needs children who want to redefine balance, achieve well-being, and launch businesses they are passionate about.

Remember, you already have everything it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. It's not an easy journey, but it's worth it. As you embark on this new chapter of your life, let your resilience lead the way. Embrace your superpower and turn your challenges into opportunities.

If you're a mom raising a child with special needs and seeking to redefine balance and well-being while starting a purposedriven business, I invite you to join us at Mompreneur Conversations™ TV Show on Amazon Fire TV Here, you'll learn how to reclaim your identity, find harmony, and love the business you build

THE PERSPECTIVE OF SHANIECE WISE

1.Thank you for sharing your insights with us! We are so grateful. This edition serves to highlight amazing women throughout the State of Ohio and their contributions to the Buckeye State we love. Were you born in Ohio, or did you choose to relocate here?

My name is Shaniece M Wise I am a Business Expansion Coach & Strategist, CEO of Wise, Armstrong and Associates which is a business coaching and consulting firm Founder of the Unstoppable Community of Business Owners and yes, I am born and raised in Ohio.

2 What do you love most about the Buckeye State? A favorite restaurant, attraction, or store?

I am an Alumni of The Ohio State University where I earned two business degrees, one in Marketing and the other in Transportation and Logistics I absolutely love being a OSU Buckeye O-H-I-O Ohio is a very family-oriented state, and my family is very important to me, immediate and extended Eighty percent of my family was born and raised in Ohio and still live here today My favorite attraction is Cedar Point because my family enjoys amusement parks I love shopping, and Columbus has very nice shopping areas, for example Easton Towne Center and Polaris Mall. I absolutely love going out to dinner and my favorite restaurant (amongst many that I love) is The Pearl, because of their New Orleans style oysters.

3 How did you discover your passion for helping individuals and businesses achieve growth in their revenue? Where did that spark of passion truly ignite from?

I have always had the heart of an entrepreneur. At the age of twelve I had a lemonade stand in the front of my home. Growing up, I was always teaching, educating, and selling something. My my nickname was “Boss Lady”. Early in my twenties, I became a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant and began selling makeup and teaching others how to build their own Mary Kay Business. I moved up the career path very fast and became a Sales Director at the age of twenty-four, driving a Pink Cadillac and being one of the youngest black Sales Directors in Columbus Ohio at that time. I traveled all over the United States teaching women how to build businesses. I was featured i Mary Kay’s national publications, earned national awards, driving seven Mary Kay Career Cars, four being Pink Cadillacs In one year, my unit sold over $500,000 in retail sales For fourteen years, I built an amazing career in Mary Kay Cosmetics, met some amazing people, and had a lot of fun Then in 2008 I started my Business Coaching Firm, Wise, Armstrong and Associates, LLC, where I help entrepreneurs build beyond six and seven figures I teach business owners how to grow their visibility, increase their profitability and improve systems and strategies while they step into the role of CEO I am the author of Activating Your Gifts and Activating Your Gifts – 2nd Edition - 15 Steps To Identifying Your Gifts To Prepare For Entrepreneurship and I speak all over the country about business growth and development

As you can see, I love what I do. Helping business owners is my jam, but it did not become a passion until my father passed away. He loved his family, but he never fully operated in his gifts. He was an amazing clothing stylist. He could have run with the best celebrity stylists in the game. But he never got the opportunity to show his gifts to the world. After he passed, what I loved to do, turned into my passion. Helping business owners turned into me fully operating in my gifts. That is why I teach business owners how to develop their businesses by using their gifts to help serve others and change lives, and not taking their dreams and their gifts to the grave.

4. As a certified Business Expansion Coach, what are some key principles or strategies that you believe are essential for individuals and businesses looking to increase their revenue?

As a Business Expansion Coach & Strategist I have five key principles I believe are essential for established business owners looking to increase their revenue.

1.Implement a consistent framework. Successful framework is what is what business owners put into signature programs/ offers and ultimately become known for in their market.

2 Clear strategy and systems Business Owners cannot focus on revenue if their business is not built on a strong foundation

3. Solid pricing model. When moving into the CEO Role, business owners must price programs and services at pricing points that reflect the long-term transformation provided.

4 Must have a team that supports your visions Business owners cannot scale businesses by themselves, they need teams that believes in their vision and will support their goals

5. Be authentical and do not compare. It is important that business owners embrace their authenticity with no comparison to others.

5. What role do mindset and self-belief play in achieving revenue growth, and how do you help your clients develop a positive and empowering mindset? Do you find any specific mindsets are pervasive or consistent here within the Midwest as opposed to other geographical areas?

I believe mindsets are more consistent within the Midwest as opposed to other geographical

areas. The Midwest is more family oriented, slower paced but evolving and expanding rapidly. It is not as fast paced as other areas, but I believe it will soon get there. What I have seen in the Midwest is more people are selective on where and what they spend their money on.

On top of living in a slower paced city or state, mindset and self-belief play a huge role in how people operate and how they perceive themselves. They both are huge when it comes to achieving revenue growth because the mind is where it all begins There is a quote that I use by Henry Ford, that says, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right,” It is all about what you believe, it is all about what is in your head As a Business Coach I understand the importance of mindset, and anytime I do training on business growth; I always start with the mindset and self-belief first

Mindset tells me a lot about a business owner There are activities in my book “Activating Your Gifts: 15 Steps to Identifying Your Gifts To Prepare for Entrepreneurship” where I teach how to transform your thoughts, your words and your energy. Mindset is all about how you see yourself whether it is positive or negative. It is hard for a business owner to reach their full potential with a limiting belief system.

For example, in my early career as a business coach, I had some clients that I coached who came from poverty childhood experiences which caused poverty type mindsets. They operate from a place of lack and could be very negative and pessimistic.

6. What is one piece of advice that you often find yourself giving to clients who are looking to overcome challenges and unlock their revenue potential?

The one piece of advice that I often find myself giving to clients who are looking to overcome challenges and unlock their revenue potential is one of my favorite quotes by Les Brown It is a quote I share with all my clients, “You must be willing to do what others won’t in order to et what others don’t have” This quote simply means you must be willing to do what others, or the average person will not do to get what the average person does not have. It means going above and beyond and it goes back to mindset work.

7. Finally, what is the most rewarding aspect of your work as a public speaker, best-selling author, and business coach, particularly when you witness the transformative impact it has on people's lives and businesses?

The most rewarding aspect of me being a public speaker, best-selling author, and business coach is knowing that the knowledge that I have is meant for me to share it with the world. The transformation that my books, my words, and my skills provide allow me to help thousands of business owners build amazing businesses.

I know that the Lord has blessed me with my gift as a Business Coach to see what others cannot see and to help business owners transform at the highest level possible. I love how my clients evolve from when they first join my coaching program to when they graduate. I get to watch them transform right in front of my eyes. For example, my client, Breanne, who is an Airbnb SuperHost and Short-Term Rental Coach, went from $30,000 to $250,000 in 10 Months while being in my program.

Prior joining my coaching program, she earned $30,000 with 2 units from January to June After joining my program in June, she had earned $100,000 and was up to 10 units in five short months Her business grew to over $250,000 in revenue with 10 units and she is now a breath away from half-million Breanne was not afraid to step out in faith and follow her dreams

When Breanne was asked what she learned from me as her Business Coach, she said “I learned the importance of having a prayer strategy and remembering who I am in entrepreneurship. I also learned the power of scaling my business and being resilient. Lastly, I learned that it’s okay to take a breather, hear from God about what’s next, and move accordingly. Growth in business is not linear.” Then asked how working with me impacted her business growth, Breanne simply stated, “Working with Shaniece has opened my eyes to what’s possible in business for me! While I know that Airbnb will not be my forever thing, I’m amazed at what I’ve been able to accomplish in a year I’m looking forward to continuing to build on the foundation that you’ve helped me build Onwards to my first $1M”

8. Are there any exciting projects you are currently working on that we should know about?

THE CREATOR OF BLESSED BODY WORKS

1. Were you born in Ohio, or did you choose to relocate here?

Yes, I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio

2. What do you love most about the Buckeye State? I love the homely feel of it. The city is big but not as big as NY lol.

A favorite restaurant, attraction, or store?

My favorite attraction is Lake Erie, it's so peaceful sitting by the lake. I love the water.

3. What inspired you to create Blessed Body Works, and what sets your luxury black-owned candle company and skincare line apart from others in the beauty industry?

The desire to create products that promote relaxation and self-care is what inspired me to create Blessed Body Works. What sets us apart is our heart for the people. We don't just sell candles and body care products. We promote an overall relaxing lifestyle and promote self-care which is a form of great mental health.

Was there a moment where you "knew" or was it more of a gradual experience? I can say it has been a gradual experience.

4. How do you incorporate your belief in self-care and self-love into the ethos of Blessed Body Works?

By creating a customer service philosophy that describes how to meet customers where they are and provide a great experience for everyone across platforms. In what ways do your products go beyond skincare and contribute to a holistic well-being experience?

Incorporating emails and social media posts about Selflove, or being good to yourself, will help you develop your physical wellbeing. For so many women, self-care is an act of honoring themselves. Is that how you see self-care? Self-care to me is a Lifestyle. It’s anything you do to take care of yourself so you can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally well.

5. What motivated you to focus on providing high-quality skincare products that enhance and celebrate natural beauty? Knowing the effect that it has on women.

Enhancing one’s confidence and when you look good you feel good.

How does Blessed Body Works promote authenticity and inclusivity in the beauty industry?

We understand that everyone’s self-care looks different, we have created products that aim to promote relaxation. It was essential to develop products that help people embrace where they are, on that self-care journey.

6. Beyond the physical aspects of skincare, how do you encourage your customers to embrace their inner radiance and practice self-love through your brand?

By teaching them that if you don’t love you, you can’t expect someone else to love you. You can’t pour from an empty cup filling yours up, it is most important.

7. Looking ahead, what are your plans, aspirations, and visions?

My plans are to become a household name I aspire to have Blessed Body Works come to mind when you are looking for an in arms reach sense of self-care and aromatherapy. I also plan on moving into a brick and mortar where customers near or far can come shop, tour the many candles, scents , candle vessels I have and do a Wick & Wine which is a candle making workshop I started 2 years ago for my customers and fellow candle lovers.

THE INSIGHTS OF QUAMIL WRIGHT

1. Thank you for sharing your insights with us! We are so grateful. This edition serves to highlight amazing women throughout the State of Ohio and their contributions to the Buckeye State we love. Were you born in Ohio, or did you choose to relocate here?

I was born in Elyria, Oh in Lorain County My dad went to the army when I was a baby and we moved to the army base in Kentucky My family relocated to Columbus right before I started Kindergarten

2. As a musician and production studio owner, what initially drew you to the world of music and what inspired you to establish your own studio?

Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember I come from a church background which included my mother being a choir director and singer. My maternal grandmother sang in church as well. My aunt, Norma Jean-Wright, was the original lead singer of the disco/R&B group Chic. I started singing in church when I was very little and have been doing so ever since. I started songwriting when I was a Freshman at Denison University but didn’t decide to seriously pursue a career in music until 2011.

After over a decade as an Independent artist and owner of my entertainment/production company, Soul Dope Entertainment, I wanted to branch out and open the doors to a physical space that would be a multipurpose work, rehearsal and learning space for artists. This is something that I really needed myself and I knew that there was a need for it in the community. The Soul Dope Production Studio officially opened in June.

3. How has your background as a musician influenced your approach to running a production studio? In what ways does your firsthand experience enhance your understanding of the creative process?

I approach every decision from an artist-centric perspective. I think about what I needed when I was starting out and what I still need as a seasoned artist This helps me to focus and be very intentional about what I want this space to look and feel like as well as what to offer here

My firsthand experiences enhance my understanding of the creative process by giving me an endless pool of knowledge to pull from Though I am always learning and a forever student of this business, I have been through a lot, seen a lot, tried a lot, worked with many people, experienced success and failure All of it helps me to understand what artists are going through at various stages of their creative process and to be able to be a resource to them

4. What type of services do you provide for your Clients within your Studio?

The Soul Dope Production Studio is available for band/show rehearsals and as a general work space. Artists can come in, close the door and have meetings, write, record podcasts, shoot video, do photoshoots and more. We also have a recording booth setup for music. It’s truly a multipurpose space that we can work with anyone to customize to help them get their art done. We will also be offering creative workshops and classes covering various areas of artist development very soon.

5. Making music in the Midwest is different than in NYC or LA. What is your favorite thing about performing for crowds and communities in Ohio?

There’s nothing like performing at home. My friends are here. My family is here. People who have been supporting me since day one are here. It always feels good to contribute to the culture in my own community by being in the thick of it and connecting with people in person.

6. Can you share any notable challenges or obstacles you've encountered in your career as a musician and studio owner? How did you overcome them, and what lessons did you learn from those experiences?

One of my greatest challenges throughout my career has been staying encouraged to keep making art through the ups and downs of life. I am a mother of three and it isn’t easy to find and maintain a work/life balance. Sometimes, it’s hard not to feel guilty for needing to still be YOU It’s very important to learn how to manage time and know when to take a break to catch your breath and refocus

EMPOWHER WORLD 26

I’ve had to find my way back to music after losing multiple loved ones in the past few years, particularly both my maternal grandparents in a 2 year span, and fighting postpartum depression It was a very very hard time for me to push through I was certain that I was ready to be done I still struggle at times but I overcome it by allowing my loved ones to support and hold space for me I make taking care of myself and doing the things I love more of a priority and I allow myself to be unapologetic about that One of the most important lessons has been that boundaries will save your life It’s okay to say no to things It’s okay to disconnect from anything that is not helping you heal or enhancing your life

7 What advice do you have for up and coming entrepreneurs and artists in Ohio? Listen to your gut. People will try to talk you out of your dreams and project their fears onto you. Do NOT listen to them. Find community with other entrepreneurs and connect with them. They will GET you. Study your field incessantly. Try things. Fail. Try again and tweak as you go. HAVE FUN! There is no point to doing any of this if you don't love it.

8. Are there any specific projects you are working on that we should know about? Always! Lol I am the current booking manager and host of Soul Sundays at Natalie’s Grandview. The Soul Sunday series is held every first Sunday evening. I feature a variety of R&B/Soul artists and bands. I am preparing for the fourth season of my podcast, The Soul Dope Show, where I have candid chats with guests about indie art and culture. I am also working on a new album that I plan to release in 2024.

GOAL SETTING AND ACHIEVING

a plan will not be reached overnight but through your growth process. You have to grow into the goal and become the person that gets the goals you set out to achieve

Achievement

We should look at goal setting as more about achievement, something that you want to achieve, the next thing that you want to achieve When we look at achieving a goal, we must consider what it will take to complete it Where we are and what we are doing now may differ from the steps we need to take to reach our goal We must step out of the frame as if helping a friend become our friend Ask ourselves; What do I need to do? What characteristics do I need to have? Whom do I need to evolve to get what I want to achieve my goal? What am I willing to give up? What do I need to give up? Where am I ready to make the time to follow through with the activities to bring my goal to fruition? Goal achievement comes down to what we are willing to do to achieve it What will we do to achieve our goal?

Big

Our goals have to be so big that they seem unachievable to the average person. We must have big enough goals that the average human would laugh at. Big goals are goals that we have to lean on God to help us achieve them. The expressive saying by Norman Vincent Peale, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Whatever your goal is, double or triple it. Make your initial goal a milestone as you continue to reach for the moon. One of my favorite quotes was by Michelangelo when he said, "The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark." We have to reach for more than we want; if we plan too small when we achieve it, we'll stop, and it was probably a goal that did not stretch us into becoming more.

Actionable

As you set your goal, break it up into small actionable steps. When the goal or action seems too big, we may not move forward to achieve it When we can make the process doable, we’ll be more prone to act and keep moving forward If the goal is a dollar amount or number, divide the number into twelve months, three months, or one month, and that’s the monthly or quarterly number you need to reach in order to achieve your goal in twelve months Break your goal down so your subconscious mind is not intimidated and believes you can achieve it Revisit your goals often, and know your numbers to see where you are in the goal achievement process Your numbers will tell you if you need to take more action or if you need to push your goal date out a little Never settle for anything less than what you set out to achieve If it’s the end of the year and you haven’t reached your number, or you’re going to the gym three days instead of five, move your five-day goal out three or four more months Don’t be attached to your goal dates, be flexible to move your target date and adjust the timeline Consider that you set the goal; you do what you’re supposed to do; you work your plan and let God be responsible for the outcome; God is responsible for the results

28 EnpowHer Mindset

History Leaves Clues

Look at your past. Think about a time that you set and achieved a specific goal. What did you do? How did you behave? What was your plan? Looking at how we reached a past goal will let us know how we operate. I looked back and found that when I achieved a goal, it was because I knew what I wanted, had the steps laid out, and moved forward step after step. I didn’t walk around telling people about my goal; usually, by the time I told someone about it, I had already taken the first steps. In my not-so-past goal setting, I have shared upfront with people what I wanted to do, and then I started to get input on how I should obtain it and what I should do next. I was stuck on other people’s information and opinions that I had not asked for. I asked myself, what was going on? Why am I not moving forward? How did I achieve goals in the past?

As I reflected on my past goal achievement process, I realized that I am wired to set out for my goal, take steps towards it and then seek help and talk about it when I’m stuck or don’t know how to get a specific action done. I seek guidance from mentors that have done it before I even hired a therapist who coached me to discover what was holding me back When we don’t find successful goal achievement in our past, our mind is left to wander, and possibly the self-talk comes up and the belief that we won’t achieve the goal this time as well; besides, history leaves clues, history repeats itself So, look at your past, and find what paradigms you had that helped you achieve your goals

Assistance

Most of the time, we need help in goal setting or achieving Some people have gone before us that have reached the goals already that can help put a plan together There are three kinds of people that we need in our circle The first person that we need is someone that we can trust and that will hold us accountable. Look for a friend or accountability partner you can update that will help and keep pushing you forward in your goal, helping you push through even when you don’t feel like it They ask for updates, your next step, and possibly even a date around that next step They won’t accept excuses as to why you are not moving toward what you want. They celebrate you as you reach milestones in your goal.

The second kind of person that we need is a mentor. When we don’t know what to do next or if we need help with getting our plan together, we need to find a mentor. Mentors have successfully reached the goal or a similar one and can provide mentorship and guidance to help you get there. If you want to lose weight, you’ll find a mentor that has lost weight and know what you need to do to lose it. Mentors are there to tell you what action steps you could take next. Mentors let their history and experience guide you. They can tell you what worked and did not work for them. A mentor does not have to be someone you are connected to and can talk with; you can be mentored and guided by studying someone that has already achieved the goal. Research and find out whom you can explore that has already achieved what you want to achieve. What did they do? What kind of person are they? What kind of steps did they take? You can be mentored through books as well as through human contact.

The third kind of person that we need is a coach. When we find that we are stuck and we know exactly what we should be doing, and we can’t move and don’t understand why, we have to find a coach, possibly a life coach Instead of advising what to do, coaches ask you questions that help you uncover the things inside you and the limited beliefs that may hold you back Coaches question you in a way that enables you to go on the inside to see what paradigms you must change to reach the goal you set out for Coaches help you become the leader in your life; they help you determine the next step you need to take

Always know where you are and determine the right kind of person that you need to help you along

Paradigms

We reach our goals through our current and future sets of paradigms Paradigms are sets of habits that we do on autopilot; we don’t have to think about the patterns (habits); they are just automatic. The main thing in anything is self-awareness, and we must know our current habits to replace them with habits that will serve us and help us reach our goals.

Think about how many people have New Year Resolutions; they have goals they want to reach by the end of the year but give up after three weeks for example, wanting to be in the gym and work out five days a week. They start going to the gym the first week, and by week three, they are burned out; they no longer have the stamina to go to the gym five days, but they still desire the outcome of going to the gym five days a week by the end of the year.

29 EnpowHer Mindset

What happened? They set a goal (New Year resolution) and started as if they’d already built all the habits (paradigms) necessary to go to the gym five days a week consistently. They begin with old neuropathways and try to force new neuropathways. Neuropathways are not created overnight; they are built by our beliefs and consistent actions.

The more you believe, the more paradigms you create towards your goal, the more action you take, and the more energy you put into achieving your goal. The less that you believe that you will achieve your goal, the less energy and activity you will put into the plan and upgrading your paradigm, thus falling back into the original habits (paradigms) and continuing to get what you currently have, a life without reaching the goal you set.

To achieve our goals, we have to become someone more than we are; we have to replace old habits with new habits and create new neuropathways and paradigms that will support us in reaching our goals. We can’t swallow the apple in one bite! We must become goal-focused, change our paradigm, and change our mindset We must permit ourselves to take one step at a time, one bite at a time If your goal is to work out five days a week, start with one day, and build the habit of going one day a week so your mind and neuropathways get used to the new routine that you want If your goal is to make a hundredthousand dollars this year, give yourself permission to start with a thousand

Trust the process; it takes twenty-one days to start to form a new habit, and it takes about sixty to seventy days for a habit to be automatic, for a new paradigm, a new neuropathway to be created and stick We have to give ourselves the seventy days to make a new norm Otherwise, we return to the original habits that we no longer desire If we want something different, we must start with small incremental steps We have to give ourselves time to adjust to a new norm

Affirm

We must affirm who we are daily, in the morning, afternoon, and evening. In the mirror as we brush our teeth. Whenever we think about our goals, we have to affirm ourselves. Tell ourselves, our subconscious minds, who we are, saying things like, “I achieve goals that I set out to reach.” “Goal achievement comes easy for me.” “

Give yourself grace through the process. It’s perfectly human to fall short in our activities. If you fall short one day, re-affirm yourself, get back up, and give yourself permission to keep moving towards your goal. Only talk about goals and plans to people who will speak into you, affirm, celebrate, and support you through the process.

Celebrate

Celebrate every step of the way, even for your smallest step. If the first step is writing your action in your planner, celebrate after you write it. Congratulate yourself on taking the first step. When you achieve a milestone, have a more significant celebration, perhaps a meal at your favorite restaurant Plan what your big celebration will be when you achieve your goal Our subconscious minds love celebrating and looking for things to create more of that happy feeling When we celebrate the small steps, our subconscious minds remembers what we did and helps us to continue to do more of it Keep creating that happy feeling, moving towards your goal, and celebrating along the way

GENESIS DOWNTOWN

1. Thank you for sharing your insights with us! We are so grateful. This edition serves to highlight amazing women throughout the State of Ohio and their contributions to the Buckeye State we love. Do you have a favorite resturant, attraction, or store?

Gosh, that's a very hard question! Columbus has so much to offer, but as a foodie, I have to say locally owned, Arepazo is definitely one of my favorite restaurants! I absolutely love Peruvian food! For a good steak, I'm going with Ruth Chris all the way!

2. You have a background in Event Management. How did you know it was your passion and what moment or experience inspired you to step out in faith as an entrepreneur and business owner?

So I actually didn't identify event management as a passion of mine until my final year in college at the University of Cincinnati, but looking back on my life, there were multiple moments that can be traced back to my love for events! It was in college where I began tapping into planning events as I was involved in numerous campus organizations and always planning a program I interned with an event management company my senior year as well as a nonprofit organization After graduation I applied for hundreds of event planning positions, many within hotels, and no one gave me an interview. After months of applying, I said to myself "well, I guess I need to work my way up the ladder"! I landed my first job out of college working the front desk at the Hampton Inn & Suites making $9 00 an hour Talk about unexpected turns The hotel industry captured my heart and I eventually moved in the sales department as an administrative assistant and eventually landing my first management position as a Catering Manager. As I grew in my career, I realized that I was always pointing out ways to make processes and procedures better and enhancing the customer experience It was in my most recent role that I started receiving phone calls from people who wanted to truly customize their event and having the ability to choose their vendors I turned down many bookings at the hotel and that's what made a lightbulb go off that there's a problem and a solution was needed.

3. How has your background and prior experiences served you while building Genesis Downtown?

My background has definitely helped me become a well-rounded career woman within the events & hospitality industry I've been fortunate to work as a Host, Server, Bartender, Front Desk Associate, Sales Assistant, Catering Manager & Events Manager. My experience has also made me more appreciate of the front line workers who have to navigate the "not so friendly" customers on a day to day basis and understanding the importance of empathy, patience, communication and partnership

4 For those who are unfamiliar, paint the picture of what Genesis Downtown offers and the feelings you want people to have when they walk into the center.

GENESIS Downtown is Columbus' newest wedding & event venue offering 2,700 square feet of flexible space. The space features stunning 14-foot ceilings, brand new floor to ceiling windows bringing in bright, natural light and stunning chandeliers This historic space is adorned with original crown molding and modern wood-inspired floors. Our hope is that every client and guest feels the authenticity of the faces behind the brand. We want people to feel comfortable and supported before, during and after their event

5 Events are such a unique industry You have a chance to be a pivotal part of so many people's special days. Can you share a memorable experience or moment-- heartwarming, funny, or anything inbetween?

Oh for sure! To be honest with you, we get the biggest chill bumps when we are providing site tour and learning more about our clients and their events Our venue has come across so many different types of events, many in which are small businesses. Whether it's a customer appreciation event, a pop up shop, a vendor expo, we get the opportunity to hear their stories and how they got to where they are It's humbling to know we too, have made an impact on people's lives as we showcase how GENESIS Downtown was brought to life. It's pretty overwhelming. We are grateful for those moments.

6. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are considering leaving the corporate world to pursue their passions and start their own businesses? How have you taken that own advice to heart?

My advice - timing is everything. Have faith in knowing everything happens for a reason and in due season. Don't give into the pressure of social media by quitting your 9-5 before it's time There's something special about every season that ultimately prepares you for entrepreneurship Stay humble, grounded and keep your heart pure. Also know that faith without works is dead. You have to put in the effort, the late nights, saying no to things, people and places for a period of time. Lastly - set your boundaries. This takes time to master, but ultimately, make sure you are still carving out time for the things and people important to you and protect that

7. Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for Genesis Downtown? How do you envision the future growth and impact of your business?

We always say we want to be a part of the city, not just in the city Simply put, Columbus is our home and we want to put forth every effort to pour into its people and its growth. We see GENESIS Downtown as a pillar in the community, not just another venue. We have plans to grow and hopefully open a 2nd location in the next couple of years - who knows, maybe Cleveland or Cincinnati!

FERMENTATION FOR HEALTH AND HOME

Ferments tend to have a fairly unfavorable reputation Strange smells, jars rusted shut, people wandering around in socks and Birkenstocks all scary things indeed But in fact, fermentation is one of the oldest documented food preservation methods, having been used by virtually every culture (pun intended). Yogurts and cheeses were some of the very first fermented foods, even before all the beer and wine that are most commonly associated with the process Indeed, the first yogurts are thought to have been made as far back as 10,000 BCE in the Sahara Desert Made of goat and camel milk, the thermophilic lactic fermentation thrived in this subtropical climate.

Fast-forward to 1910, when Russian bacteriologist Elie Metchnikoff found that Bulgarians had an average lifespan of 87 years, something that was more than unheard of at that time The reason why? This Eastern European country is a fermented milk hotspot Locals even say that the bacteria in the air that is used to make yogurt and other dairy ferments is not found anywhere else in the world. In some languages, the word ‘Bulgarit’ translates to ‘fermented cheese’. This began a craze towards fermented foods that was suddenly going far beyond pungent cheeses and vinegars

Modern food culture equates this to the concept of probiotics, which can be found in the aisles of any self-respecting American supermarket in the form of drinks, yogurts, supplements, and everything in between.

People are owning up to fermentation, branching out from sauerkraut and soy sauce It is in fact quite the popular food preparation method Between sourdoughs and spiked kombucha to kimchi and kefir, these are trends that are easy to get behind Delicious and fun to make if you’re patient, and eat if you aren’t, everyone can agree that ferments are filled with health benefits.

Become Friends With Digestion

Ferments are excellent ways to promote good bowel function Kefir, which is essentially fermented milk, along with yogurt, have been known to relieve constipation and improve stool consistency. Also, fermented foods typically have superior digestive benefits than their non-fermented counterparts. This is especially true in baked goods, as if we needed another excuse to go for sourdough Sourdough was actually found to cause less bloating and abdominal pain than breads made from conventional yeast

Speaking of bacteria, a crucial aspect of digestive health is the presence of unwelcome microbes in the gut system This is where ferments come to the rescue Kombucha, for example, inhibits the growth of salmonella, among other potentially harmful strains. It was also found to reduce the symptoms of IBS, such as constipation. Miso is another heavy hitter in terms of digestive assistance, being filled with beneficial enzymes and bacteria that promote gut health

Absorb Those Nutrients

One essential aspect of good nutrition is the concept of antinutrition, where a plant compound negatively affects the body’s ability to best absorb nutrients Some foods come in strong here, such as fermented grain derivatives Tempeh, for instance, reduces phytic acid, an antinutrient known to hinder the absorption of minerals. Sauerkraut does a similar thing in as much as it increases sulfur-based compounds that, at low doses, offers antiinflammatory and antioxidant benefits

The most appealing part of ferments is its weight loss qualities Eating a healthy portion of kimchi at every meal for a few weeks has been found to reduce BMI and waist circumference. It also impacts the genes that produce fat cells. Yogurt shares these qualities and is a more versatile snack to boot

Your Turn!

If you love to hang out in the kitchen, you can absolutely make your own ferments at home instead of buying them at the supermarket This is often a more budgetfriendly option too, given how trendy (and therefore costly) they are these days Once you’ve gotten them started, they are quite a low maintenance project For instance, once your sourdough starter is ready for use, it can live in the fridge with monthly flour feedings. Similarly, kimchi is a bit of a hassle to start just because of the amount of salt, aromatics, and Napa cabbage to contend with, but it lasts for a few weeks to a few months depending on how well you take care of it

Some of the easiest ferments to try at home are simple probiotic pickles You won’t need any special equipment, and they are a great healthy alternative for snacking Carrots are a nice place to start since they are universally liked, but you can get fancy and do turnips, radishes, chard stems, okra, or green beans. It’s of course possible to stick with salt as a main flavor, but honestly more interesting to pop a crushed garlic clove in the jar alongside some bay leaves, peppercorns, cardamom pods (just a couple, they can be quite intense!), coriander seeds, and most other aromatics Eastern Europe is well-known for its fondness for pickled things, going as far as to pickle mushrooms, watermelon, and tomatoes

Proceed with Caution

One thing to be aware of before you start buying an arsenal of fermenting supplies: improperly made ferments can damage your stomach bacteria, leaving you feeling mighty unwell Make sure to work in a sanitary environment and use the freshest ingredients you can find to start your pickles. Remember to sterilize all of your equipment and work in a sparkling clean kitchen, or you could find yourself countering all the nice digestive effects you were hoping to achieve

Keep the Tradition Alive

People have understood the benefits and practical aspects of fermenting for millennia. Today, this ancient knowledge has resurfaced in full force, much to the joy of medical and culinary professionals alike The tradition is easy to carry on in our modern world with a plethora of options, from the commercial to the homemade

Zucchini Fridge Pickles

Fridge pickles are some of the easiest, quickest, and low maintenance ferments you can make Generally ready overnight, they are a great way to use up random produce at the bottom of the drawer. They make for wonderful snacking and great additions to salads and crudités platters. Zucchini is just one of many veggies that can be used in fridge pickles Try with cucumbers of course, but also green beans, okra, onions, and many more!

Ingredients :

1 cup distilled white vinegar

2 ½ cups water

¼ cup sugar

2 tbs coarse sea salt

8-10 black peppercorns

2 bay leaves

½ tsp turmeric

2 zucchini, sliced into chips

Method:

Bring the water and vinegar to a boil in a small pot with the salt and sugar to make a brine. Stir well until the salt and sugar have dissolved Place the zucchini in a quart sized mason jar with a lid and top with the peppercorns, bay leaves, and turmeric. Carefully add the brine and leave to cool for 30 minutes or so. Close the jar and place in the refrigerator overnight. Enjoy!
