Recently we have successfully completed the Crossrail C430 I&M contract at London, Farringdon Station for Laing O’Rourke – Strabag JV. We are working together on C410 Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road SCL monitoring for the BAM, Ferrovial and Kier JV. Furthermore, the level of quality in our work has led to us developing

a very successful relationship with the Railway Procurement Agency, the National Road Authority in Ireland, Crossrail in London and also Network Rail, Thames Water, Arup, Crown Estate, Cluttons, CBRE, Foster and Partners, Ballymore Group, Durkan Group, Berkeley Homes, J. Murphy and John Sisk & Son. Our experience working for transport and infrastructure related

projects enables us to deliver on survey requirements for the preliminary design, establishment of a control network, monitoring, laser scanning and BIM. Our monitoring solutions help asset owners to protect their structures and installations. The client can access the monitoring data online and can receive alarm messages via email and SMS. In most cases, ground movement monitoring systems are provided with remote access to the data and the ability to generate alarms (by email or SMS) if trigger levels are exceeded that so remedial action can be taken if necessary.

All the data are stored in one monitoring data base which can be accessed over the internet and provides interfaces to 3rd parties as Crossrails UCIMS. Urban tunnel projects, like the Cityringen or Crossrail in London, are related with special geotechnical risks. Most typically they are caused by poor geological conditions, very low overburden and existing structures in the influence zone of the construction. To manage these risks, an early detection and warning of unexpected behaviour of the affected geotechnical objects (ground, structures like tunnel and buildings) is mandatory. To accomplish this detection and warning, the design and execution of a suitable geotechnical monitoring program is necessary. This can only be achieved by implementing a monitoring database system capable of collecting monitoring results according to the monitoring program from different sources in near real time and to use the data after importing to the database to check different alarm levels

KRONOS provides functionalities to check if all monitoring works are carried out in compliance with the monitoring design by setting monitor plans for the different construction activities.

The monitor plans are working with monitor point groups. A monitor group can consist of the monitor points inside the zone of influence for example.

KRONOS is adjusting the monitor point groups according to the construction progress of a TBM, where the zone of influence is following the progress of the TBM. You know exactly which monitor points have to be measured and this allows an effective and economic planning of resources.

KRONOS has implemented filters and routines to verify the monitoring results and to avoid false alarm

generation. Reliable early warnings through KRONOS have already helped for example in adjusting the low pressure grouting of micro piles and to control dewatering activities.

In KRONOS database not only the values of the monitor points are stored, also the raw data, calculation protocols and quality data from automatic monitoring systems are stored and linked to the results and every result can be reproduced.

The collaboration with Geodata enables us to offer a full monitoring solution for the client. The client can directly speak with our sensor engineers, the installation specialists, the tunnel setting out surveyor, the surveyor and the software developer.

Since we have the full production chain in our hands we can adapt to customer requirements, be it the design of special miniature sensors,

MEMS Tilt Sensor – compression decoupled

Our tilt sensors and strain gauges are highly reliable and are ruggedised to withstand weather and seawater. Usually we combine horizontal and vertical tilt sensors with seismic sensors and possible ATS (automatic total stations) which are employed in locations of potential settlement or even collapse to detect any movement. Tilt sensors are typically installed on the abutments and piers and ATS used to monitor the road deck or railway tracks.

The measurements to the observation points are carried out at arbitrary intervals from mobile total stations at fixed positions.

The measuring points are fitted with suitable targets (glass prisms).

The survey is controlled via the EUPALINOS software system and is based on the automatic target recognition capability of modern total stations. Consoles or pillars are used to accommodate the instruments and, if necessary, they can be re-calculated and controlled by free stationing in the course of the measurements. Instability of observation points is strictly compensated via a balancing calculation, optionally also taking into account the distance scale. In this way, given a suitable survey configuration, meteorological data are not necessary.

We offer monitoring solutions for the construction of new tunnels, shafts and cross passages or for deep excavation and piling works near any buildings and structures which could compromise their structural geometry and stability.

We facilitate a wide range of monitoring requirements from geotechnical ground movement to environmental vibration, noise and dust monitoring.

We design and provide independent primary and secondary tunnel and site monitoring systems to ensure that a robust backup system is present in the event of any alarming reading therefore ensuring the double check of movements and preventing loss of data in case of any technical failure of a monitoring component If required, multiple total stations can be combined in a network to monitor widely dispersed areas.

In this case the data from the individual measuring stations are transmitted to a central server via (radio) LAN or ISDN and administered in a database. The data are also independently stored on the specific control computer of the individual measuring stations. Depending on the configuration, output of diagrams and the triggering of various alarm procedures are handled locally by the EUPALINOS software, or centrally by the KRONOS database system.

Our staff has been trained for site works as well as NR, LUL, DLR and other railway services to carry out installation works of monitoring sensors and equipment and to manually survey and monitor.

All data are collected in Geodata’s KRONOS tunnel monitoring database which can be accessed over the internet. The monitoring software caters for alarming and sophisticated alarm filtering in conjunction with daily update of the construction progress for small to large scale construction projects.

LIVERPOOL CITY The pictures on the left show the installation of MEMS electro level beams (ELB) in a railway tunnel under Liverpool City Centre.

The ELBs are designed to prevent the distortion by compression of the tunnel as in this case a multi-story car park had been built on top of the tunnel

so far as to have real-time design verification in the field.

Murphy Surveys – Geodata JV have started to adapt the BIM data model into the monitoring workflow.

Our experience with data models, databases and design checks predestined the converging of the monitoring data base with our 3D laser data capturing technology.

The initial start on most monitoring projects for Crossrail, LU or demolition and construction companies begins often with the request for up-to-date drawings which in turn prompts us to carry out a 3D high definition laser scan surveys. The laser scanner has become our day to day survey tool and often replaces other means of surveying. With that in mind we have started to add additional value to the data by structuring it in a way as to make the data ready for project and asset management.

This allows us to deliver additional features to the final client.

On first projects, we have converted our workflow to use the 3D laser data throughout the project, from initial design drawings, to setting out check, monitoring of movement, to final or intermediate stages of as-built surveys, pushing the limit

Our field BIM utilises design and asbuilt data to add further attributes to them while in the field. The cloudbased software combines cloud and mobile technologies to manage our data from preconstruction to

the field. Improves construction collaboration to prevent issues and drives higher quality and profitability.

The visual nature of the 3D laser data can ideally combine

completeness with easy accessible and comprehensive presentation of site data which allow different user to oversee, update and verify their specific requirements and keep one consistent data and programme schedule. The use of tablet PCs makes it possible to carry all the project data on site and update with near real-time speed.

The restricted access to tunnels in general and London Underground and TfL assets in particular, e.g. tunnels, shafts, utility chambers or water sewers, has meant that laser scanning techniques have been used for the past number of years for rapid data collection, be it from static tripod locations or mobile via car or train or as shown here by trolley.

For our works at Farringdon Station we created a BIM to simulate the progress of the pile installation and verify our movement and settlement monitoring results. The planning of the field installations and cabling could be carried out easily using the BIM database combining topography, utility and laser scan data with as-built and design.

The BIM task group states:” Essentially the UK Government has embarked with industry on a four year programme for sector modernisation with the key objective of reducing capital cost and the carbon burden from the construction and operation of the built environment by 20%.

Central to these ambitions is the adoption of information rich Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies, process and collaborative behaviours that will unlock new more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle.”

As we learned a decade ago with the introduction of GIS – Geo Information Systems, which today is on everybody’s mobile phone, used and carried around by millions every day, it should be considered whatever software we chose initially, will change over the lifetime of an asset. Therefore the data and the data structure, meaning the data we want to analyse and manage later should

be given the best assessment and consideration when implementing a BIM. The software should be open enough to adapt to different data models as they will vary in their requirements no matter what standard should be implemented initially. The laser scan makes it much easier today to decide which data should be captured as the scan data itself contain all the geometric information which then can be refined with attributes and data structure and hierarchy.

Companies that use BIM are making savings in time and money, thereby accelerating their production cycle and improving their output while running more controlled and planned project schedules due to the continuous and complete verification of planned design parameters. The leading market players have used BIM to competitive advantage to win projects and carry them out safely. By 2016 everyone will be using the same processes and technologies, therefore now is the time to start using BIM. We discover that completely new markets are opening up when introducing a BIM process. Retail business, property agents, facility management - in short everybody who until now collected special information of a building or plant room in form of paper drawings, digital photos in lists and tables could potentially make savings using and integrated BIM process.

With ever shorter product cycles and more frequent changes, refits or handovers of the building assets it is more and more important for managing this process throughout the refitting or restocking project. The BIM database needs to be updated during and after each change cycle.
