‘black kitchen’, ‘house’, and development leads to a more modern, cleaner and more hygienic ‘house’, a living room such as is familiar today. Hearth room This is a living room with an open hearth where they once cooked, lived, worked and slept. The hearth is open, raised to provide a working surface and solidly built. There may be a mantel above it to collect the smoke and direct or lead it towards the door, above which there is normally a rectangular opening. The smoke can also go out of the door itself; the windows, which are placed high up the wall, are small and there are many of them in the room Smoke room The ‘smoke room’ is similar to the ‘hearth room’ except that it has a closed stove, the outlet for the smoke is still into the room, since the stove opens into it (Juvanec 1987: 17). There may be a semi-open box on the external facade of the house, above the door, through which the smoke runs upwards and in which meat is dried. The room itself also has many windows: small, rectangular, the dimensions can be some thirty by fifty centimetres, with sliding traps. The windows are set fairly high in order to ensure an outlet for the smoke and a relatively clean space, at least to the height of a man sitting on a bench. The smoke room, just like the hearth room, opens mainly towards the gable end of the house since, if the room has no ceiling, windows can also be placed in the gable. The smoke thus collected as high as possible and the lower part of the room was more or less clean for as long as possible.

Slika 19 / Figure 19 Značilnost ognjiščnice, prostora z odprtim ognjiščem, je mnogo dima. Nad višino izhoda dima, nad oknom, je vidnost nikakršna. Njega dni so bili stari ljudje zgrbljeni, manjši. A characteristic of a ‘hearth room’, a space with an open hearth, is a lot of smoke. Nothing is visible above the height of the smoke outlet, above the windows. Old people were formerly stooped, smaller. Was this really just age, or merely getting out of the way of the smoke?

Slika 20 / Figure 20 Ognjiščnica in dimnica imata enake značilnosti: množico oken v višini, kjer nivo izhoda dima kažejo počrnele stene. Dimnica v uporabi, z dr. Langom, okolica Hartberga na Štajerskem. The ‘hearth room’ and ‘smoke room’ have the same characteristic: many windows high up, where the level of the smoke outlet is shown by the blackened walls. Smoke room in use, from Dr. Lang, near Hartberg in Štajerska.
