IMMIGRATION REPORT 2019 - 2020

In 2019-20, the government had planned to welcome 160,000 newcomers through the permanent migration programs.

Due to travel restrictions, processing delays and decrease in applications owing to the pandemic, a total of 140,366 visas were issued.

Almost two-thirds (95,483) of these visas were issued to skilled workers, 41,961 under family stream visas, and 2,481 under child visa categories.

Nearly 70% of visas issued under skilled migration streams, and 56% of family stream visas, were granted to people who were already residing in Australia.

23,372 visas were granted under the regional visa categories, which includes the two visas launched in November 2019.

37,118 visas were issued to partners of Australia citizens and permanent residents, compared to 39,918 in 2018-19.

21,495 foreign skilled workers were granted permanent residence based on state/territory nomination, compared to 16,672 in 2018-19.

29,261 foreign skilled workers were granted permanent residence based on employer sponsorship, compared to 33,025 in 2018-19.
