History In The Hardwood Hammock This issue, Avatar turns its focus to historic Coconut Grove – a community we love and have served for years. Here are a few intriguing historical facts: It’s the oldest, continuously inhabited neighborhood in all of Miami. The first settlers arrived in 1825, when John Dubose was manning the Cape Florida lighthouse on Key Biscayne. In 1873, Dr. Horace Porter established a post office and called it “Cocoanut Grove” – a name that stuck for nearly 50 years. Among those early settlers was yacht designer Ralph Munroe, whose homestead, known as The Barnacle, still stands at the head of a five-acre bayfront park. After two years of construction, Villa Vizcaya was finished on Christmas Day 1916. Its owner, the industrialist James Deering, arrived at his palatial new waterfront estate by yacht. The “a” dropped out of Cocoanut in 1925, when the City of Miami annexed the village and it became known as Coconut Grove.

The Grove’s community-focused, Bahamian atmosphere remains strong in both its culture and architecture.
