Technology Competency Framework

The DuluxGroup Technology Competency Framework sets out, defines and describes the competencies that successful employees possess at each level. The framework is aligned with our leadership capabilities and values and behaviours.

The competencies help to clarify what is expected of you in your current role and identify your strengths and areas of development.

The competencies described will help you to recognise which skills & behaviours you will need to develop as you progress through different stages of your career.

To help you strengthen and develop, these competencies link with learning & development experiences you will have at DuluxGroup.

The requirements for each individual position are taken from two different types of competencies: DuluxGroup core and functional.

The DuluxGroup leadership capabilities provide a guide to behaviour for all roles. The capabilities are defined differently at different levels of the organisation.

Our Technology Competency Framework applies to all R&D positions and reflects the collective skills, knowledge and characteristics we must possess and demonstrate as a function. Angie Thomas

Yates Horticultural Communications Manager

Making people’s lives better through gardening As the Yates Communication Manager Angie Thomas is responsible for all product communications, training packages for Bunnings, marketing and sales, and website content for both Australia and New Zealand.

Angie joined Yates as the Technical Manager after gaining experience in horticultural roles in the University sector. As the Technical Manager Angie was responsible for NPD, Regulatory affairs and gained experience in getting a product to market (label design, safety & product suitability). The role combined her horticultural and science backgrounds with a love of gardening.

Angie says that her R&D background helps in her current role as it allows her to effectively communicate to R&D and to marketing about new products and the processes that have been used to develop them and helps her to explain to the sales team the ‘why’ of a product.

After finishing her Science degree, Caitlin joined Decorative R&D in the Colour & Complaints group working on a project that converted tinters from high VOC to low VOC. This was followed by moves to the Polymer team and then to the Product Development team. Caitlin’s experience within Decorative was the basis for her next role in a cross functional team whose remit was to source products and innovation opportunities from around the world.

A move across to marketing as the British Paints Product Manager was the next step in Caitlin’s career. In marketing she has had various roles that have included the Berger Brand Manager and the Dulux Exterior Product Manager. In these roles she has gained experience in brand management, developing customer relationships which has included the partnership with Surf Life Saving Australia and the launch of Porters into Bunnings. Caitlin has also completed an MBA while in marketing as well as taking internal Marketing Masterclasses.

Caitlin loves understanding how the different parts of our business work, and how they come together to deliver for our consumers. “I think this comes from my time in R&D in trying to understand what’s happening in whatever project I was part of”.

Dulux is a large group with many opportunities if you are prepared to move out of your comfort zone

Vivien Schapendonk Senior Procurement Specialist

Delivering new products to the market place draws on a strong need for analytical skills and planning ability Vivien started her career in R&D in Decorative Trade before moving into the Protective Coatings business. She says that her time in Protective Coatings taught her “how to interact across cross functional teams and how to influence people”.

Viv built on this experience with her move into Purchasing as a Senior Buyer Raw Materials. Her Purchasing role has drawn on her analytical and planning skills that had been developed in R&D. In her current Purchasing role Viv’s team looks after packaging for the Dulux Group. This role exposes her to various groups across Dulux which consolidates the experience that she gained while in R&D.

Michael joined Dulux in 1994 in the Dulux Decorative Exterior products team. After a few years he moved into the newly formed Customer Care team, looking after customer complaints.

Michael comments: “At each stage of my career I have moved to new roles whilst still enjoying the current role I was in. I looked upon each move as an opportunity to broaden my skills and challenge myself to learn new processes. There is no doubt that my time in R&D gave me a fantastic grounding for each of my subsequent roles. Having an indepth understanding of what makes up a paint and the performance properties that can be achieved is extremely beneficial whether you are selling, making or marketing products. Within each new group there will always be opportunities to learn and I have been fortunate to be able to complete a range of safety, leadership and marketing courses which has further enhanced my knowledge.”

Career path stories The freedom to “think beyond my work area

Denbigh Morris

Production Support Chemist Merrifield

The importance of following standard methods in production After 4 years with Selleys, Denbigh moved into the operations team at Yates Mt Druitt. Initially working on process improvement, the role quickly expanded to cover quality, insourcing of new products and chemical hazards management. Denbigh’s time in Selleys allowed her to develop a strong interest in process and the importance of following standard methods.

Denbigh followed the building of the Merrifield plant with lots of interest, so that when a role in the Merrifield P&C team came up, she jumped at the chance. Being at Merrifield Denbigh has been exposed to the wider R&D and supply chain teams in Dulux. Denbigh’s time in R&D at Selleys laid the foundations for her career by exposing her to a wide range of technologies as well as gaining experience in production.

Matt says that the Selleys R&D management and culture gave him the freedom to “think beyond my work area” and actively learn about other business units and participate in side projects Matt joined Dulux in Selleys rdC as a graduate Chemist in 2011 where his main project was on the successful reformulation of All Clear to reduce inhalant abuse potential.

While in rdC Matt was able to experience all stages of the research, development and commercialisation process but he also wanted to apply his engineering skills and move beyond the lab. This led to a role as a Continuous Improvement Engineer where his rdC experience provided significant scope to improve factory processes from a different perspective.

Since 2016 Matt has been in his current role as the Product Introduction & Improvement Manager. This role is to ensure the successful scale-up of new products and is a key interface between R&D and Operations. Matt is currently involved in transferring Liquid Nails production to the new Nippon site in Qingyuan.

Selleys Product Introduction & Improvement Manager 16

Peter joined the Dulux Decorative R&D team in 2007 after first spending three years at Bostik gaining experience in formulation development, manufacturing and marketing/sales support.

After three years in the Premium Exterior (Weathershield) team, Peter was seconded to the Gracefield plant in New Zealand for 12 months. On his return he spent another 12 months at both the Glen Waverley and Rocklea sites as a P&C Chemist/QC supervisor.

Steve Champion

Project Manager Dulux Concierge Painting Service

Steve started in what was then called the Decorative Market Focus group delivering NPD projects. After his Science degree he had previously worked in laboratory services companies operating a GC/MS to test soil samples for volatile chemicals.

Steve gained experience within the various Decorative groups spending time in NPD roles, longer term research roles and polymer tech. He then moved to Cabot’s and returned to Decorative as a Team Leader for Exterior. Steve then became the Team Leader for the Channel Brands team and then the Trade team.

The next move was across to marketing as the Brand Manager for Trade, and recently he became the project manager for the Dulux Concierge Painting Service.

Steve’s time in R&D has given him a sound knowledge of paint technology which enables him to help trade painters with their problems and educate them on why some of their problems might be occurring.

He’s also gained an understanding of the time required and potential challenges in formulating NPD so that projects can be more effectively coordinated. In his new role Steve is “Being exposed to a diverse range of problems and getting new opportunities to learn new skills has made me a more rounded person with a broader range of experiences within a Dulux setting”.

Peter’s next role in Decorative R&D was looking at possible new raw materials and he was on the Perfect Palette project in the lead up to Merrifield being commissioned. These experiences in different facets of the Decorative business allowed him to build relationships with Procurement and Operations as well as developing his strategic thinking and technical knowledge. These skills were the foundation for a move to Procurement in 2017.

In Purchasing, Peter is interacting with not just technical but with suppliers and Operations. The fast-paced nature of the area as well the strategic thinking attracted him to the role – as Procurement/Operations is always evolving/changing there is constantly new challenges therefore opportunity for growth.
