For beer lovers, one could argue that there couldn’t be a more perfect holiday than St. Patrick’s Day! Traditionally, St. Patrick’s Day is a religious and cultural holiday celebrating Saint Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland. It commemorates the arrival of Christianity to Ireland and has grown to celebrate the heritage and culture of the Irish. Early Christian celebrations included the lifting of Lenten restrictions on drinking alcohol and eating. Because of this, drinking whiskey, beer, and cider became an integral part of the celebration. In fact, in Ireland, breweries would prepare months in advance to fulfill the demand for a stout or dark ale. Modern celebrations include parades, festivals, Irish music, wearing green, shamrocks, Irish food such as corned beef and cabbage, and the drinking of alcohol. In our feature article, we’ll provide an array of Virginia brewed red ales, lagers, and Irish stouts for your enjoyment this St. Patrick’s Day. In addition, our Events Calendar highlights a variety of St. Patrick’s celebrations being held at breweries throughout the state.
If all of this talk of Irish beer and St. Patrick’s Day has you mesmerized by the allure of Ireland, Jeff serves as your travel agent and provides his “must see and do” itinerary for a trip to the Emerald Isle. You’ll be fully immersed in the local culture as you explore a variety of local pubs and points of interest. Also in this issue, we will preview Northern Virginia’s first black-owned brewery Strange Fruit and Waygone Brewery in Henrico. Rounding out the magazine, we’ll include noteworthy happenings in Brew News. And, if a trip to Ireland is not in your plans this year, use our Brewery Guide to craft your own getaway as you explore the breweries located right here in the Commonwealth.

Legend to Focus on Beer, Less Food
By Jeff Maisey
Virginia’s oldest operating craft brewery is evolving — even coming full circle — in order to keep the beer flowing in 2024.
“We’re transitioning from a restaurant to a dedicated tasting room,” Legend Brewing Company announced on social media. “While our food menu will become limited and rotating, our commitment to crafting the beers you’ve cherished for 30 years remains unwavering.”
Legend Brewing Company got its start in 1994 when owner Tom Martin unveiled upstart brewpub, serving up traditional German, British, and Czech-style beers with a small menu that included sandwiches and fries.
In those days, beer makers had only two options when operating in Virginia: be a manufacturer (beer factory) or run a brewpub with kitchen.
Legend eventually grew to a 180-seat restaurant with an additional 200 seats on its outdoor deck with a million dollar view across the James River of downtown Richmond.
They’ve listed new operating hours as follows: Monday - Thursday: 3PM to 9PM; Friday - Saturday:
“Shocked and saddened,” was a common reply as fans and patrons of Factory Street Brewing Company in South Boston, Virginia learned of the passing of brewer/owner Brigid Layman in mid-December.
“Brigid passed peacefully due to complications from Type I diabetes,” the brewery staff announced on social media. “She lived big and she loved big. To know her was an honor and a joy shared by all of us.”
Kindred Spirit Lands in RVA
Kindred Spirit has operated its brewery on the way back side of an industrial/office complex out in Goochland’s West Creek area. With no foot traffic, Kindred Spirit was certainly a destination and well liked for its Headspace IPA.
The brewery — run by Merryl Gutierrez, John Barefoot, and Joe Trottier — recently announced plans to operate a satellite location in the former Castleburg Brewing location in booming Scotts Addition.
Ironically, both Kindred Spirit locations have a common neighbor — Hardywood Park Craft Brewery.

Beer Labels as Art
Starr Hill Brewery has begun selling its most popular beer packaging labels as print suitable for framing. The artwork sale will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Starr Hill will match funds raised from prints that include “Whiter Shade IPA,” “Grateful Pale ale,” and our favorite — “Snow Blind Doppelbock” featuring a momma polar bear and her two cubs.
The label art is that of BJ Swing.
Ugly No More
Longtime Big Ugly Brewing beer-maker-in-chief Evan Lantry has decided to move into the head brewer position at Bold Mariner Brewing Company that was vacated by John O’Reilly.
“While we will miss him dearly, we are excited to watch him spread his wings on his new journey,” the Chesapeake brewery announced on social media. “Join us in wishing Evan the best of luck on his new adventure at Bold Mariner.”
Under Lantry’s wing — nearly nine years at the helm — Big Ugly won several awards in statewide competitions held by the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild. Big Ugly won Veer Magazine’s overall Golden Tap Award in December 2023.

Forgo The Green, Head For The Red
By Jeremy Bender
In the not-so-ancient past, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations meant one thing — green beer.
Whether at sports bars, the neighborhood dive bar, street parties or shamrockin’ parades, a drop of foodcoloring in the bottom of a clear plastic Solo cup instantly turned the draft Budweiser and Miller Lite a shade of emerald to the delight of patrons clad in Halloween-like leprechaun attire and those donning “Kiss Me I’m Irish” T-shirts and matching, light-flashing necklaces, and even a press-on tattoo snagged from the “prize” packet inside a box of Lucky Charms.
If you had the luck of the Irish, you might have scored a proper pint of Guinness Extra Stout, Harp Lager or Smithwick’s Red Ale, but that’d require landing a seat at an authentically replicated Irish pub.
In the 1990s, one more option could have presented itself — Killian’s Irish Red.
Though George Killian’s Irish Red got its start in Enniscorthy, Ireland in 1864, most American beer consumers “discovered” it after Coors bought the rights to the brand in the mid-1980s, brewed the recipe in Colorado, and widely distributed it coast to coast.
The amber hued, easy-to-drink 4.9% ABV brew was marketed as a “premium” lager and it became a hit with consumers destined to be on the forefront of the craft beer scene here in America.
In fact, when the craft beer revolution fired-up brewing kettles across the US in the 1990s and then exploded like a powder keg in Virginia in the 2008-12 period as SB604 read like the Declaration of Independence for beer lovers,

Irish red ales were a traditional beer style brewers featured on their menu boards. For some, they were instant flagships.
As a new generation lined up for a drink and as American brewers switched gears more quickly than a tour bus barreling down the twisty, narrow roads scattering sheep on the Ring of Kerry, red ales — and lagers — seemed to have taken more of a backseat to the flashy, trendy, juicy variations of hazy IPAs, sours, and others.
Still, the general public pleasing Irish reds continue to make a featured appearance — even a comeback it seems — as the rushing glut of fairweather, trend-migrating consumers move on to the latest TikTok influenced thing, and allow the true beer loyalists to relish a brilliantly produced pint.
In Virginia, there are many a fine pint of red ales/lagers to select from, whether on tap or packaged. Head for the red, or a locally-brewed dry Irish stout, this St. Paddy’s Day.

Get Thyself to Ireland
By Jeff Maisey
About this time each year I seem to run into acquaintances asking, “Hey, you’ve been to Ireland, right?”
“Yes, many times,” I reply.
“I thought so,” is often the response. “I’ve seen your photos on Facebook. I want to visit this year. Where should I start?”
My first words of advice are in question form. I inquire about the timeframe, budget, expectations, points of sightseeing interest, and food/drink preferences.
If the slate is relatively open, here’s an itinerary I generally suggest for first-time travelers in quest of a scenic and memorable experience to the enchanting Emerald Isle. And for the purpose of space limitation, this is a brief version to get you going.
Mitch Kirsner of Hampton enjoys a pint at The Olde Castle Bar in Donegal.

Air Travel
Given the pain in the ass state of airline travel these days, do yourself a big favor by driving to Dulles and flying direct to Dublin on Aer Lingus. It’ll cost roughly $700 roundtrip (flying in May).
Perhaps the best part of flying to Ireland is on your return; you’ll go through Customs and Passport Control at the airport in Dublin. When you arrive back at Dulles, just walk off the plane and head towards baggage claim or the parking lot. Simple.
When To Go
While Ireland is enjoyable year round thanks to the temperate Gulf Stream flow off its western coast, I prefer visiting in May or June. These are shoulder season months and provide ample daylight for taking your time and exploring the countryside.
September and October are also excellent months, though with noticeably less day time hours. March can be fun, especially if you make a point of attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade with local pipers and drummers in Dingle Town or the rugged Achill Island town of Dooagh (highly recommend).
Rent A Car
The only way to experience Ireland in my book is to have a good set of wheels. This gives you total freedom to explore any off-the-beaten-path town, stop for picture taking, and the delightfully unexpected.
If you enjoy driving, the narrow, twisting roads of Ireland are just plain fun. You’ll need to be alert at all times given most of the roads in the countryside have little shoulder room, with short stone walls and thick hedges instead hugging the pavement and marking landowners plot of green.
You’ll also need to watch out for sheep around every bend in the road and giant tour buses racing between major towns like Galway and Killarney and tourist hotspots such as the Cliffs of Moher and Rock of Cashel.
I often travel to Ireland with my friend Mitch Kirsner. It’s beneficial to have a co-navigator and additional set of eyes.

A beer and reading material at the cozy Thomas Connolly pub in Sligo.
Driving Route, Towns & Favorite Pubs
Go west, my friends!
From the Dublin Airport, I hit the ground running and head cross-country to the city of Donegal. Even though it’s essentially going coast-to-coast, the driving time is just 2:40 and you’ll arrive in time for lunch and pint of Donegal Stout. Depending on if you squeezed in a nap on the plane, you may feel up to driving towards Gortahork and looping back on the smaller routes for an overnight in the town of Donegal.
In short, I suggest routing your roadtrip through these places: Sligo, Westport, Achill Island, Doolough Valley in Connemara, Clifden, Galway, Doolin, Dingle, Kenmare with a loop around the Barra Peninsula, Kinsale, Killkenny, and concluding in Dublin. Take 10 days to two weeks to really enjoy.
You’ll encounter many genuinely friendly local folks and musicians, great seafood, and a mixture of Irish standard beers (order a Beamish if you find it and some new craft brews inspired by their innovative American brethren). Pubs are plentiful, though fewer than in the past.
For essential pub stops, I recommend the dark wooden, cozy The Olde Castle Bar in Donegal. Be sure to order the county stout.
In Sligo, Thomas Connolly is a must-see heritage pub founded in 1861. It’s the real deal — winning the All Ireland Pub of the Year 2023 — and features single cask whiskey releases as well as the finest Irish beers.
Matt Molloy of the legendary Irish folk group The Chieftains owns a namesake pub in Westport that many a fan of traditional music considers a pilgrimage focal point. Molloy’s Grammy Award rests behind the bar, but the bartender is keen to allow photo opportunities with your pint of Murphy’s Stout. Molly himself is known to frequent his pub.
Veldons Seafarer Bar in Letterfrack/Connemara is a brilliant stop for lunch and a few beers.
In Clifden make a point of calling Lowry’s home for the evening socializing.
If you’re staying in the pedestrian-friendly college town of Galway, get yourself to the salt-of-the-earth Tig Choili for live music and non-stop conversation.
The tiny village of Doolin has arguably the best local folk music pub in all of Ireland called McGann’s Pub. Plan to eat dinner and stay the duration. Gus O’Connor’s Pub, just down the street, is a good second option.
Dingle Town is a two-day stop for me with several of my favorite Irish Pubs: Dick Mack’s and J. Curran. For three generations a John Curran has run the establishment, which is part general store, but mostly an old man’s bar where I’ve engaged in memorable discussions with former horse racing jockeys, farmers, fishermen, and the like. What a gem.
Dingle is also a hotspot for music. Marina Inn never disappoints as musicians from surrounding regions descend upon it during the warmer weather months.
Kilkenny is known as the home of its famous brewer of red ales — Smithwick’s. You can tour the former 18th century brewhouse. For pubs, two are exceptional: Cleere’s Bar for its storytelling open mic sessions and the Medieval Kyteler’s Inn for dining, atmosphere, live music, a drink.
Before flying home from Dublin, I exclusively park my butt at The Palace Bar, a timeless, Victorian-era bar frequented in the past by journalists. Slainte!

Planting Progress with Strange Fruit
By Jennifer Waldera
For the first time in over 400 years, Black brewers are crafting beer at their own brewery in Northern Virginia. With an unbridled passion for brewing and an enthusiasm for educating other lovers of beer, Austin Eason and Justin Broady launched Strange Fruit Brewing.
“We saw an opportunity to serve a virtually untapped market. When it comes to craft beer, Black people and minorities of all kinds haven’t fully embraced the booming craft beer movement and kind of got left behind in a sense. This has naturally led to a lack of diversity when it comes to ownership, consumers, and producers in craft beer,” said Broady.
The name of the brewery was chosen deliberately. While craft brewers are sometimes cheeky with their brewery and beer names, Eason and Broady’s choice for their brewery’s name holds specific significance.
“We wanted to be very intentional with our name but knew it would raise some eyebrows. Strange Fruit started as a poem in 1937. It was written in 1937 by a Jewish teacher named Abel Meeropol about his dislike of the violence and brutality levied against
Black people. In 1939, Billie Holiday performed the song as one of the first nationwide cultural protests – what some consider the spark of the civil rights movement,” said Eason. While the two are joint owners of the brewery, they operate from opposite coasts. Eason is on the West Coast, handling marketing and the infrastructure of the business
while Broady is in Northern Virginia, navigating the other aspects of the business. And though the pair each have worked in the technology industry, both are beer enthusiasts and have their own connections to the beer industry. Broady has been homebrewing for about 14 years while Eason has a background of working for breweries.
- 22 - FEBRUARY 2024 PROFILE
Austin Eason and Justin Broady
A taproom is still in the works, but a couple of Strange Fruit Brewing’s beers like the German-style pilsner Approachable Guys and the hazy IPA Subtle Nod are available at retailers like Total Wine. One of the duo’s favorite styles to brew is a lager.
“Lagers! IPAs are the more popular style, but when a beer enthusiast, brewer, or owner goes to a new brewery, they immediately try their cleanest, clearest beers. The pilsner, kolsch, blondes… It’s hard to hide impurities and mask flavors in a lite crisp beer. That’s why we put so much thought and R&D behind our German-Style Pilsner,” said Broady.
Between licensing and funding, Broady and Eason faced the challenges that many startups, particularly breweries, do. Opting to file for a wholesaler’s license helped to ease some of the obstacles, but the support from their families, and others, helped them along the way as well.
“We’d like to thank our wives for allowing us to chase this dream day in and day out. And our boys, Nate and Ryan! They’ve been a huge asset to us behind the scenes for a couple years now. Lastly, for our investors for believing in us.”
The support of the community has been integral as well. After the release of their first beer in June of 2023, Broady and Eason saw sales increase just from word of mouth and their relationships within the industry. They’ve also begun collaborations with other businesses and breweries.
“We collaborated with my local bike shop and brewery “Bike Lane” in October and brewed a delicious IPA (shoutout to Ward and Blake!). We’d discussed doing a beer together since we decided to start Strange Fruit and finally brought it to fruition. We’re releasing a beer with our friends over at DC Beer [on] January 27th. They have been tremendous supporters of ours since day one,” said Broady.
Broady and Eason also have a trifecta of principles that guide their brewing and business. The first is the simple concept of crafting excellent beer and being exceptional within the industry. The second is being caring and inclusive.
“We’re knocking the door down of the industry and bringing all marginalized folks with us, without being corny or cloying. When any customer -- but particularly an underrepresented one -- sees an SFB product, they know they’re going to feel welcome and get a great beer,” Eason said.
The final tenet of the philosophy that drives Strange Fruit Brewing is the desire to build knowledge and power within underrepresented communities.
“We want to celebrate and promote craft beer in Black and underrepresented spaces; celebrate and promote Black culture in craft beer spaces. And contextualize and boost the history of Black Americans’ contributions to craft beer and beer culture generally.”

Waygone? Nope, They’re Just Getting Started
By Carl Hott
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a wall in a side room of Waygone Brewery in Henrico speaks volumes.
Located between the taproom at the entrance and the brewing equipment in the back, the room features a display of dozens of mounted photos. Each tells a snippet of the story of how the brewery came to be, starting with its early beginnings in a shed.
“This is the last party we had in the Boo House,” said co-owner and cobrewer Richard Myers, pointing to a photo in the center. (More on that later.) “Here’s the day we started construction … This is the day our equipment first arrived.”
It’s a chronicle of a hobby that grew into a passion and, eventually, a business. The grand opening was held in early November with his friend of about 15 years, Tim Powell.
Myers, who worked for United Healthcare for 25 years in sales training, wasn’t a craft beer fan when he met Powell and his wife, Nancy. “I was more of a Corona kind of guy,” he said. Powell, on the other hand, had dabbled a bit in home-brewing. Myers’ wife Nicole, sensing a potential interest, bought him a craft beer kit in 2014 as a Christmas present. But he didn’t dive in right away.
“It sat on my dining room floor for about a year,” Myers said. “I didn’t know what to do with it.”
At the time, while the families’ young daughters played together, the two couples bonded more over baking and foodie talk. Eventually, the following winter, Myers and Powell
decided it was time to dust off the beer kit and give it a try.
It didn’t go well.
“We were trying to cool the wort in (Powell’s) sink, but the sink collapsed onto the garbage disposal,” Myers said. The two managed to get the wort outside and cool it in the snow. Several weeks later, they finally got a chance to try it.
“It was awful,” he said with a chuckle. “I think we missed a few steps in the brewing process.”
Another time, the glass carboy sitting in Powell’s closet exploded, shooting the bung in the air and dousing his clothes. But the two kept at it.
In 2016, Myers bought a one barrel, gravity fed brewing system with direct-fire burners, setting up shop in his 800-square-foot shed. He maintained the temperature of the single wall fermenter by placing it between two air conditioners. (The fermenter has a second life at the brewery as a planter.) More recipes followed, until Myers felt confident enough to invite people over and evaluate his product.
“We got pretty popular around the neighborhood,” he said. “It started with about 20 to 30 people. Then people started driving to see us. People would come by that we didn’t even know.”
The operation expanded from the shed to a cabin with a half-dozen rooms that he built on his porch, which he dubbed the “Boo House.” More of an elaborate Halloween novelty for the neighborhood than a brewing area, he nonetheless incorporated taps into the wall, with a kegerator sitting outside.
Halloween is a favorite holiday for Myers. In June, he would start decorating the Boo House, then remove the decorations early the following year. A literal sign of what was to come - a large piece of carved wood reading “WAYGONE” - hung above the entrance.
“I always incorporated beer as part of my projects,” he said.
The brewery’s name is a play on words from the street the two partners live on, Goneway Drive. The brewery’s logo shows Myers’ boxy “Willy Wagon” car driving off into the

unknown with a bicycle hanging on the back - a nod to co-owner Powell’s love of biking. Myers said it symbolizes the leap of faith both took in deciding to open a brewery together. From there, a road symbol motif - such as the street signs labeling the bathrooms - began to develop.
What finally gave Myers the push to pursue building a brewery with Powell was the urging of his friend David Baum. Baum, the founder of Billsburg Brewery in Williamsburg, died four years ago.
“We would get together and drink beer; and one day, he said, ‘You’ve got to do it.’ That’s what made it seem possible.” In February, the brewery is releasing a 9 percent NEIPA memorial beer named after Baum.
After three years of searching, Myers and Powell settled on a location close to where they live: a strip mall in Henrico. They modeled their business after the relatively small, intimate setting of Final Gravity Brewing Co., located on Lakeside Avenue in Richmond. A similarly cozy feel was important as they began construction, which took about a year and a half. People in the neighborhood who enjoyed their early brews pitched in to move the equipment.
“We wanted it to be in a location where we felt comfortable,” Myers said.
Waygone’s opening date was November 3, with a soft
up to that point, including the ordering of construction materials. “But, it just blew up. We got delayed so many times; and when people found out the date, they said, ‘Hell - they’re open!’”
The current staff is definitely a family affair - both Nancy Powell and Rick’s wife Nicole man the taps, while Nancy’s father Mike cleans glasses and tables. Mike pitched in early on for previous beers by picking sage in California’s Sierra Nevada region. The resulting recipe, Mike’s Sierra Brown, was modified for the brewery and recently released on tap.
The brewery uses a four barrel system in addition to the original one barrel setup. The one barrel system is used for hard seltzers, sours and experimental beers.
“In the neighborhood, everyone gave us honest feedback (about the beers),” Myers said. “We like to make sure we have something for everyone.” Since opening, the brewery has about 18 regulars, he said.
Although the Boo House is gone now, the sign that once hung above the doorway currently resides on the brewery wall nearest the taps. After work, Myers still spends time with his neighbors in the shed where it all began.
“We’re not trying to overcomplicate it,” Myers said. “In the end, it’s all about community. We’re just trying to make something that people enjoy - something that people will
