All good things must come to an end…but that doesn’t mean there can’t be another good thing about to begin! It’s time to put away the bathing suits, shorts, and T-Shirts. Another summer has passed. All the flowers have bloomed. The bees and butterflies have done their jobs, and seeds will soon find snuggly places in the earth to wait until the warmth returns. Beaches, barbeques, and backyard shenanigans will have to wait till next year. No more lawn mowing. The flowerbeds will wait till Spring. The land is getting ready to sleep.

But before that happens, the trees will capture sunsets in their leaves.

The air will invigorate the heat-weary; heavy with the smell of crackling fireplaces coming to life. Farmers begin to harvest, and the networks prepare to entertain us anew. We’ll all pull out our cozy, cool-weather couture, and make ready for the brisk, beautiful Fall.

With all the big, winter-time events still distant on the horizon, Fall is a time for fun and coming together. Little goblins, heroes and pretty, pretty princesses can’t wait to gather their Halloween goodies.

Meanwhile, the bigger folk can’t wait to taste the delicious, new seasonal beers dreamed up at their local craft breweries! Let the kids have Halloween. For beer lovers, it’s time for Oktoberfest! Rich Marzen lagers have been aging since Spring, just waiting to be released from their barrels. Beer lovers will also have a variety of pumpkin brews to sample, because, why not? Everyone else is doing it! The robust colors of Autumn will pour from the taps in delicious ambers, malty porters, nutty browns, and red ales.

Who needs summer when you can gather around the brewery firepit with a glass of your favorite beer while listening to amazing, local musicians! Or, gather inside for more music, as well as incredible food from the best cooks and chefs on four wheels!

Summer may have rung the bell for last-call on some activities, but there’s never a last-call for fun! In addition to all the great, seasonal beers, the fantastic local music, and the delicious food-tuck cuisine, your local craft breweries are sure to keep it rockin’ with special events, games, weekly activities, and more!

Great Valley Farm Brewery

On Saturday, October 20, Great Valley Farm Brewery in Natural Bridge, Virginia, will be celebrating its twoyear anniversary! From noon till 8:00pm, guests can enjoy all of Great Valley Farm’s delicious brews, including their flagship Belgian Blonde Ale, which is a light bodied, refreshing beer with floral and herbal aromas, backed up by smooth, bready Pilsner malt flavors. There will also be a new release Belgian Quadruple, which will be available both in bottles and on draft. It will be a strong, Belgian style beer with a spicy, fruity character.

While drinking all the great beer and looking out over the Great Valley Fam vineyards, guests can also enjoy food from LexMex Tacos.

Entertainment for the event will include the Americana, country, and classic blues rhythms of the Red Hill Band, as well as the pop-Americana sounds of Rob Cheatam. There will also be games, including a special giveaway.

Though the brewery is celebrating two years of craft beer, owners Nathan and Irma Bailey, actually started out envisioning a winery for their Natural Bridge location.

Nathan began home brewing beer in 2008, but had already been making wine at home for many years before that.

Eventually, the couple’s love of wine and craft beer began to spark their entrepreneurial spirit. They wanted to do something for themselves, and so they left their careers behind.

Originally from North Carolina, the Baileys purchased the twenty-seven acres of farmland at 60 Great Valley Lane in 2008. In 2012, they finally moved to Virginia and planted four acres with wine grapes. There are Lemberger grapes for a Cabernet Franc, and Gruner Veltliner grapes for a signature white. Nathan tells us that both grape varieties originate from Austria, and it’s challenging to grow them in the wetter, more humid environment of Virginia. They’ve been doing well, however, and will be ready to begin

production next year, with the wines being available in 2020.

The vines actually began bearing fruit in 2014, but at that time, the Baileys had begun construction on the soft-blue, cottage-like brewery with its quaint, diner-like taproom.

Since they were concentrating on the brewery, the harvests from 2014 through 2018 have been sold to other wineries and markets. Now that the brewery is settled, however, the 2019 harvest will be the pilot for a variety of wines that will be available alongside the craft beers at Great Valley Farm’s tasting room. The bottled wines will also be available to purchase at the brewery location, but like all the craft beers, there are no plans yet for distribution.

With twenty-five years’ experience in the wine industry, Kevin Jones will be in charge of wine production at Great Valley Farm. As far as all the big plans go, says Nathan, they are right on track, and just where they thought they’d be at this point. Careful planning, with everything in its time, is the recipe for both the brewery and the winery at Great Valley Farm. Despite all the careful planning, however, the Baileys have still been surprised about how it’s turned out. Being located in the midst one of Virginia’s most popular cluster of tourist attractions, they were certain they’d get most of their business from people visiting the

Bridge, the zoo, the Virginia Safari Park, and the caverns.

Instead, says Nathan, they’ve had an enormous response from the local community. In the end, the guests that visit Great Valley Farm are about 75% local and 25% tourist.

They’ve really become part of the local community, and give back by hosting about six charity events per year, during which the Baileys donate a portion of their sales to a variety of worthy causes. On September 15, they hosted the Rockbridge County Pie Festival.

With the Festival Committee selling pie by the slice, and Great Valley Farm selling amazing craft beer, funds were raised that helped the community pool and all its swim programs. On October 6, they will host another fundraiser benefitting the Rockbridge Ballet and its children’s dance programs. Also in October, they will host a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and during the event, $1.00 for every pint of Hibiscus whit beer will be donated to the Foundation. The Hibiscus brew has a pink hue, which symbolizes the color embraced by the Foundation for its public awareness.

The Baileys love being part of the community, but they also love being part of a major tourist hub. It allows them to meet and talk with people from all over the country! Visitors enjoy relaxing after long drives on I-81, and they love taking advantage of all the space to roam around.

In just two years, Great Valley Farm has solidified its reputation as the go-to spot for quality beer and beautiful scenery. The Baileys take pride in making quality the number one goal when crafting a variety of Belgian-style ales using ingredients they grow on the farm. But they do not limit themselves! They also produce a delicious variety of IPA’s, English Ales, German Lagers, and more! Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company

When Bill Heckel became the new owner of Greenbrier Valley Brewing in January of 2018, it wasn’t time to party. It was time to get to work! Bill is a remarkable entrepreneur, believing fully in supporting West Virginia businesses. Having already run several successful businesses in Elkins, he decided to apply his skills, as well as his love of craft beer, to Maxwelton’s own Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company.

Under Bill’s new leadership, says General Manager Sam Walker-Matthews, they have been able to do things they weren’t able to before. Sam was with Greenbrier Valley under its previous ownership, and was retained by Heckel to head up the new team.

Also retained for their expertise were Brewery Operations Manager - Gary Vermillion, Tap Room Manager - Christina McDaniel, Cellar Manager - Travis Canterbury, Packaging Manager - Julia Gudmundsson, and Communications Manager - Tanya Hazelwood, as well as exemplary, ancillary brewery staff - Evan Metz, and everyone’s favorite Pub Quiz Host, James McLendon.

With this all this incredible talent already in place, Heckel also brought back former head brewer, Brian Reymiller, to serve as Brewery Director. He also recruited Alex Durand to be Assistant Brewery Operations Manager, and added brewers Dave Barron and JW Groseclose. Finally, Jeff Bray was brought on as Outside Sales Rep to help with plans for expanded distribution.

Since taking ownership at the beginning of the year, Bill Heckel and his team have increased the capacity at GVBC to brew four times the amount of beer than was possible, before.

They enlarged the fermentation space to include five 90-barrel fermenters, and are building a brand new, extra-large, drive-in cooler.

They’ve even added a new canning line and are very excited about expanding GVBC’s distribution footprint into the state of Virginia. In addition to all the other great Greenbrier Valley brews already available for sale at retailers and restaurants, there are also plans to can some of the new favorites, such as Zona’s Revenge; a light and refreshing Belgian-style wheat ale that features a zesty orange, melon, fruity finish with hints of herbs and spices. Also slated for canning is the Cardinal Red Scottish Ale; a rich, malty, sweet brew with a deep amber and light copper coloring that celebrates the West Virginia craft beer heritage and gives a hearty nod to the historic Cardinal Brewing Company from the 1990’s. Greenbrier Valley’s German Kolschstyle, FestivALE, will also join the distribution lineup, with its soft grain profile, balanced by the floral, citrusy, and slightly spicy essence of German grown Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops.

Greenbrier Valley’s taproom area has always been unique, with its fixtures built from salvaged pallets and bourbon barrels from Smooth Ambler Spirits. However, Heckle and the GVBC

crew have renovated the taproom to better accommodate even more craft beer lovers! They’ve also installed new taps to serve sixteen varieties of delicious Greenbrier Valley brews.

General Manager, Sam Walker-Matthews, tells us that the production expansion, as well as all the other changes, has allowed them incredible flexibility to produce specialized beers for the tap room. The new owner fuller supports GVBC in brewing the flagships, as well as increasing the number of seasonal and one-off releases.

There are still more plans for growth and expansion, but after eight long months of hard and rewarding work, Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company finally took a moment to celebrate.

On Friday, September 28, the brewery held a combination newownership and expansion party. If you missed it, however, don’t worry! Bill Heckel, Sam Walker-Matthews, and the entire GVBC crew invite you to Greenbrier Valley’s big Oktoberfest event! It happens on Saturday, October 13, starting at 2:00pm.

The party will feature flagship beers and delicious food from fantastic vendors, as well as awesome music from The Kind Theives.

But don’t let all the fun end with just one party! On the first Saturday of every month, from 2:00 – 9:00pm, Greenbrier Valley features live music concerts, delicious food, and drink specials.

It’s a family fun event, with the taproom hosting games for all ages, including Corn Hole, Jenga, darts, foosball, chess, and checkers.

There’s also music on most Friday nights, along with food from favorite partner vendors, Blackwell’s Catering, Swift Level Farm, Rolling Thunder, and Pretty Penny.

The Legend of the Black Beer

D

eep in the heart of Franconia, in Saxony and Thuringia, lies a brew that is not for the faint of heart. It reaches back far into the depths of time and tradition. Brewed with the darkest malts, smoked and roasted over open flames, it uses ‘magical’ yeast that has been tempered and trained to respond to the cold depths. Buried in the ritualistic, cold, dark caves and left for months at a time (or lagered) to ferment was the legendary “black beer” or schwarzbier.

Though all of Germany’s delicious lagers hold a special place in not only world beer history but american beer history, the schwarzbier is truly a unique example of Bavarian Brewing. Literally translated to “black beer” and though closer in color to a very deep ruby or garnet, burnt chestnut, or chocolate, this style was the darkest of all German brewed lager.

Though the very first “black beer”, the Brunswick Mum, was first mentioned in the late 1300’s, this was probably more a bastardized style of the a Munich dunkel, rather than a true schwarzbier. Köstritzer Brewery is credited with first brewing the beer in 1543, and they still brew the famous style till this very day.

Unlike the dark ales of England or Ireland, this beer was different. It was lagered in true Bavarian fashion. Like the pilsners and amber style lagers produced there, being lagered meant that it took on the natural characteristics of Germany’s famous lagered taste profile. Forgone were the predominant fruit esters and buttery taste common with English styles, now replaced with a clean, snappy finish that was produced from the lagering process. Using the darkest malts and being lagered meant that this beer could showcase the delicious malts used in its creation. This was exemplified in the taste of the brew. So a soft sweetness would sometimes be balanced with a VERY subtle coffee bitterness, with notes of the darkest chocolate, light coffee, and even the faintest hint of a dried fruit.

Though they employed the use of roasted and smoked malts at the time, there was

seldom very little roastiness or burnt flavor to the brew. It is often finished with noble hops, which helps reinforce and clean up the light bitterness on the end. A very dry hop snap finish in the after taste was just enough to have you going in for another quaff. It comes in lighter bodied, like that most dark brews, but with a medium mouthfeel, very little to no astringency, and silky smooth.

At around 4.5-5% ABV, the schwarzbier is very easy to approach. More so than its cousin, the Baltic porter, who’s much more full bodied, warm boozy approach could scare some off. The delicate, but deep, dark hue draws you in for a whiff of faint hint of caramel, slight hop aroma, in the nose.

Be warned, though this beer style looks the part of most stouts and porters, it is famously approachable and will use its dark mystique to pull you in, its subtle aromatics will reach out to your senses and at first drink it may have you in its clutches.

Then, there you will be helpless to do nothing but enjoy one of Germany’s famous styles.

And you too will be another entranced fan of the deliciousness that is The Black Lager. Though classic dark in style, this a beer you can enjoy over and over this Halloween season without having to be as worried about the “boos”.

A Musician’s Homage to Craft Beer

I

f you are reading this, you already know that nobody knows the craft beer scene in this region like Brewhub does. But if there just might be two other people who just might come close, I think it could be my bandmate and I. We are Redleg Husky, a country and bluegrass duo from Asheville, North Carolina. It is Tim McWilliams on guitar and vocals and yours truly, Son the Bassman, on bass and vocals. For a few years now we have been crisscrossing the Southeast and cutting our teeth in music in the same way that our heroes did back in the first half of the 20th century – loading down a car not at all meant for touring and playing 250 gigs a year. We seek both to make a living from our songs and to hone our skills and keep developing a sound and a live show that we can be proud of.

Unlike those heroes of ours, we are touring in the age of craft beer, which means that many of our shows have taken us to breweries of all stripes. We have gone from the tiniest garagebased operations in the hills of Southwest Virginia to massive temples to beer in Charlotte and Charleston, to everything in between. We have played for young families on Sunday afternoons and for far rowdier crowds on Saturday nights – usually back to back – and have figured out how to make our sound come across in

every kind of acoustic space, including the dreaded echo chamber concrete warehouse.

What we have mostly learned about, though, is the passion and the love that fuels this industry and this culture. We have met more owners, brewers, and bartenders than we ever thought we would and felt their love for not only the beer that they are pouring but for the communities that they are bringing together and the common spaces that they are creating in their taprooms.

We have watched as new breweries have sprung up and have given the chance for cross-town neighbors to meet, for locals to gather with tourists, and for people from all walks of life to remember what the public house is all about and to recreate the spirit of that ancient institution. We have been honored to be a part of it and to contribute our music as another rallying point for these gatherings.

It is with that spirit in mind, and with the desire to pay tribute both to this movement and to this publication, that we wrote a Brewhub Magazine theme song, which can now be found on YouTube and on the Brewhub website. &Bands Jonah Carden was born into music.

Growing up, his Dad’s rock cover band would always rehearse in the basement, so he was exposed to band life from a very early age. It was during Christmas at the age of twelve, however, that Jonah received his first guitar.

Jonah tells us he made a lot of strange noises on that guitar before he started to get the hang of it. But, by the time he’d reached fourteen, he was playing in clubs. At the time, he didn’t want to be a singer. But neither did any of the other teenage boys he was jamming with. Somebody had to it, though, and by the time he was sixteen, Jonah began adding vocals to his performances. Since then, Jonah has developed a great deal of respect for the art of singing – an art many teenage boys avoid like homework! “It’s like playing an instrument,” says Jonah. “You have to develop it. You find your strong points and you work on them.”

Jonah joined a couple of bands over the years, and indeed still plays with cover band, “One Eyed Jack”, along with his drummer-father! He was having a great time, but it wasn’t long before a song-writing muse began tapping on his shoulder.

Jonah wanted to write original material, and eventually managed to have enough to release his first solo album in 2010. “The Great Depression” was a guitar-driven, single-style concept album, featuring an acoustic, grunge rock sound. Jonah tells us it very much reflected the typical teen desire to be cool.

In the eight years since, Jonah has grown and evolved, as both a person and as a musician. The desire to be cool has been replaced with a genuine appreciation of the musical art. His second album, “Last Train Home” was released in summer of 2018. This new album features a variety of sounds; incorporating several mountain music instruments along with rock and jazz for a compelling, unique sound. A sound, it’s worth noting, that Jonah himself creates by layering track upon track so that he can not only sing lead and play guitar, but also perform the backing vocals and all other instrumentation, apart from the drums. Jonah says he’s come to appreciate how hard it is to write a good, clean song without hiding under the distortion of heavy guitars.

Encouraged by his fiancé, Jonah left his lab technician job behind two years ago to pursue music, full time. Though he’d been playing for ten years, this new focus has allowed him

to work on his music, every day. When not writing or recording, Jonah is booking, making flyers, keeping up his social media presence, and all other aspects of the music business. He’s been able to play larger venues, with shows farther away than just Bluefield, West Virginia.

He’s been able to network and meet more people; allowing his growth to snowball. Fans have even begun following Jonah to different towns to hear him play.

More than any of his other songs, the fans ask for “Last Train Home”; the title track from his new album. The song reflects how he felt about leaving his job. “If I don’t go, I’ll never leave,” is the sentiment, and the rest of the album was built around the sound of this song. The video for “Last Train Home” can be seen on Youtube.

Reflecting on how times have changed over recent years, Jonah tells us that even the shows themselves have changed.

He used to play in bars and clubs until 2:00am, but that scene has faded. “It’s a whole different experience,” says Jonah, “playing breweries.” He loves that the show starts earlier and ends earlier, making it easier for him to be a husband and father. He’s excited that breweries are giving musicians a place to play again, and he deeply appreciates that the people who come to breweries actually want to hear music. They’re not just there to party, like the club crowd who couldn’t care less who was playing.

Looking forward, Jonah plans to keep doing what he’s doing.

He wants to keep building his music and developing his style.

“It’s all about finding your fans. There’s always people who’ll like your music. You just gotta find them.”

hough JoJo Stockton is a fourthgeneration guitarist, he didn’t get started until he was sixteen years old. When he did finally pick up a guitar for the first time, it was a Wednesday.

On Sunday, he was playing. With music having been such an intrinsic part of his family for so long, JoJo’s art is more than a personal passion. He’s carrying on his father’s legacy.

And it doesn’t stop there. To carry the tradition forward, JoJo’s thirteen year-old son, Elijah, is already playing his own guitar. Proud-dad JoJo is sure Elijah will be “the one”.

Over the past five years, JoJo has become an independent blues artist, inspired by greats like Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, and Robert Cray. He’s now a sought-after celebrity around Roanoke; hosting his own “Jojo’s Unplugged” show, every Wednesday night at Wall Street Tavern, as well as the New River Valley Blues Society Jams at FatBack Soul Shack in Christianburg. In such a short time, JoJo has been able to make a name for himself and do exciting things like playing lead for Roanoke’s own R&B queen, Jane Powell, and recording with popular Roanoke legend, Hoppie Vaughn. He’s also band leader for the popular group, Soulacoustix.

Soulacoustix began a few years ago when JoJo connected with soulful singer, Stuart ‘The Human Jukebox’ Brown. Sometimes a duo, sometimes a trio, and sometimes even a quartet, Soulacoustix covers all genres of music by creating crazy, high energy mashups. JoJo tells us that during a typical Soulacoustix show, they’ll play everything from Journey, to Bonnie Raitt, to Michael Jackson, to Celine Dion, and more! Always-on-point drummer, Chris Eural, and groove-oriented keyboardist, David Miller, round out this crazy entertaining group.

Though JoJo is making a big splash on the local music scene, he’s also a proud to be a former Patrol Officer with the Roanoke Police Department. But he didn’t leave that behind to pursue music full time. JoJo still protects and serves at the Roanoke Sheriff’s Office. JoJo says he’s never sought fortune and fame.

Where showbusiness is concerned, creating good music and carrying on his father’s legacy mean much more to JoJo than seeing his name in lights. “If I can earn enough to provide for my family, I’ll be happy.”

When not hosting or playing with Soulacoustix, JoJo is also a solo artist, and he really loves playing at breweries. He says it’s a great experience; somewhere between the anonymity of playing background in a club or café, and the overwhelming focus of playing a spotlight show. “You’re more than just the music in the background, but not in the spotlight,” he says.

not be in anyone’s face. People will notice you. It’s a good place to try new things and improve.” And he must be doing something right!

He’s gotten excellent response, and many standing ovations.

Coming up, JoJo is thrilled to announce the release of his first solo album! Coming in October, “Cookies and Cream” will feature all songs not only written by JoJo, but he also sings and plays every instrument on every track! It will be a bluesy collection, featuring songs titled after sweet treats. But, says JoJo, even people who don’t like blues will like this album. It will definitely have enough blues to satisfy the hardcore blues fan, but will also contain elements of rock, R&B and jazz. Physical CDs will be available for sale at shows, but tracks will also be downloadable from online music resources like iTunes, Spotify, and many more!

Master Sergeant By Vickie Holt Before veteran, Leonard Murray, retired from thirty-one years in the Army, he was already talking about owning his own food truck. And perhaps, one day, his own restaurant. He’d enjoyed cooking for the troops and wanted to continue cooking after his service was done. But not until he’d relaxed a while.

When he was ready, Leonard started with a pickup truck, a tent, and a small, pull-behind trailer and smoker.

In March of this year, however, he got his new custom trailer and has been making a name for his delicious, award-winning pulled-pork barbeque and savory wings, ever since!

The Master Sergeant menu features baby-back ribs, pulled pork, barbeque chicken, and “porky” dogs! You can also get delicious chicken wings and mouth-watering, southern side dishes like mac ‘n’ cheese, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, and collard greens!

And don’t forget the Master Sergeant’s special BBQ Nachos!

Leonard – along with his wife, Rhoda, and their truck-man, Michael McGeorge – will satisfy the hungriest crowds at your event, venue, or business. Be sure to call on the Master Sergeant for your party and catering needs!

Leonard says that Twin Creeks Brewing in Vinton really gave him his start. In regular rotation there, Master Sergeant BBQ has become part of the family. Leonard says he’s even getting to know many of his customers by name. Chaos Mountain Brewery in Callaway also welcomed the Master Sergeant, as well as Soaring Ridge in Roanoke.

Looking forward, Leonard hopes to grow his business. He wants to add more trucks to his fleet, and hasn’t given up on the dream of a brick and mortar restaurant location. Until then, when Master Sergeant is not on the road, Leonard, Rhoda, and Michael serve pop-up truck lunches and dinners from their location at 111 Virginia Avenue in Vinton.

Though Terri and David Nichols were long-time landscapers by trade, they had so much more fun when friends would ask them to help out by providing foods for events. Their foods were featured at auctions, festivals and other get-togethers for many years. With all that experience, along with a love for preparing great food, it wasn’t long until they set up a brick and mortar, neighborhood restaurant. But it wasn’t for them. What they’d loved most about helping their friends was going places, experiencing the events, meeting new people, and making new friends. They closed the restaurant after two years.

In June of 2016, however, the couple began planning for a food

and turkeys throughout November and December!

The whole family helps with all aspects of food preparation and on-site concessions. And as a result of all that hard work, Mountain Grille has caught on in a big way! Terri tells us they have become so popular they are unfortunately having to turn away work. But, the Nichols’ hope to facilitate all requests with a second truck next May or June of 2019.

Another Burger-Fest award winner is Mountain Grille’s “Angry Mama Burger”; topped with jalapeno peppers, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, and hot sauce.

You can always find these two burgers on the Mountain Grille menu, but Terri and David have created exclusive menu items, as well! It all started when they took part in Chaos Mountain Brewing’s Sasquatch event. They made a special burger for the event, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, an onion ring, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. Since then, Chaos Mountain has added Mountain Grille to their regular rotation, and “The Sasquatch” burger can only be found served at Chaos Mountain.

Twin Creeks Brewing has also put Mountain Grille in regular rotation, and have also received a special, exclusive burger on the menu! The folks at Twin Creeks worked with the Nichols to help create and name it, and “The Creek Bank Burger” – topped with pimento cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickle – is only available when Mountain Grill is at Twin Creeks. Terri says they hope to keep this fun new trend going as more breweries add Mountain Grille to regular rotation.

In addition to all the great burgers, Mountain Grille serves up a cheese steak that is so amazing, they sold out half way through their last event! Other sandwiches include the “Poorman’s Steak” (bologna on a bun), the BLT, and two varieties of veggie burgers.
