INTRO In medias res — “in the midst of things” — one of my favorite phrases, and perhaps the most applicable to where I find myself today. There was a time I considered myself solely a writer. And as writers interpret for others; as writers stand in the midst of things, so too will I, as a designer. In the pages that follow, I’ve attempted to tell you my stories in a new language. Steel yourself now. As much as I am the sum of many things considered, so is this portfolio. With much to say, and only so much room, I’ve included a number of raw thoughts and as broad a range as possible demonstrating my work, capabilities, and progress. I humbly spread my dreams before you... and implore you to read softly because you read on my dreams.

This book represents “a new kind of hello. Yes I did watch Love Actually while working on this portfolio. No, I also watched Gladiator too. And Star Trek twice. And Forrest Gump. How many? I dunno... two, three, maybe 16 times?

For me, design has many voices.

I have a variety of theories as to who I am now.

Perhaps a big left hand or something.

10

... the first thing I did was load my copic swatches.

That scene, where they jump from the ship through space and into the atmosphere... I want to do exactly that.

A chronicle of my work and a painting of my potential.

This portfolio is as much journey as it is journal.

I am dually impressed upon by the intensity that design requires and the peace it affords on the other side of a deadline.

A good relationship withPhotoshop covers all manner of sins. 11

Intro to Fabrication / Team Project Two Weeks Make a Box, Creatively

thoughts

My partner and I decided we’d take the idea of “box” lightly -- i.e. that it just had to contain something.

solution

The unintended pun became intent when we settled on a lamp form, without, necessarily, lamp function. What resulted was something of a hybrid: part interactive sculpture, part light source, and part stealthy stash.

learning

To make the base & neckline, I specifically wanted to practice using the lathe. Doing so on a multi-wood surface (MDF + poplar) was especially enlightening when one layer of the MDF split, sending the whole block at my chest.

In an attempt to encourage lasting interest and long-term ownership, the individual pieces of the neckline can rotate, inviting others to “complete the design.

02. kneel context

timing problem

National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) pilot internship. My partner Ben and I were the first selected to collaborate with engineers at the Office of Mine Safety & Health Research to provide improvement recommendations for knee pads utilized in low-seam coal mining. 6 Weeks “Low-seam” coal mining is the extraction of underground deposit layers measuring 48” or less from top to bottom (approx. the height of a door knob). Despite the existence of specialized machines, human operators and engineers are forced to kneel and/or crawl in these restricted work spaces, resulting in thousand of work days lost due to knee-related injuries.

thoughts

NIOSH knee injury research and focus group videos provided helpful insight. In addition to reducing direct pressure to the knee and surrounding area, the primary concern to miners was discomfort -- from padding deficiencies, strap migration & bunching, and from dirt & water entering their pants & pads.

solution

Broad feature enhancements that we eventually combined into technical pants for low-seam miners.

learning

Nothing compares to designing with an actual client; a U.S. government agency no less. The budget & timing constraints, real time communication, professional expectations -- it was a very intense learning experience and an exciting challenge indeed.

Research & Explore

Present Ideas

Explore NIOSH research suggests that reducing and/or redirecting pressure from key landmarks at the knee cap and surrounding area might address a number of common injuries. Typical miner knee padding consists of a uniform-material cushion fronted by a hard shell with straps that go around the leg to hold them on. These ideas explore possible modifications in padding material, shape, & added multi-layer functionality.

Explore Miners consistently report that as they work, their knee pad straps invariably end up bunched behind the knee causing recurring irritation, soreness, and eventual skin damage. These issues are further complicated by dirt & water getting into their pants and padding. To address this, some miners alternate between

Relocating Straps Top-Mounted Straps Straps mounted to pants

• Alleviates “strap bite” • Easy to remove debris

Knee Cradle • Transfers some weight to the belt • Lifts knee off of ground Straps adjust for comfort Clip on to knee pad

wearing their straps tight and allowing them to hang loose as a means of reducing tension and/or allowing dirt & water to escape more freely. The following ideas explore various methods of sealing out dirt & water, managing strap adjustment & strap migration, or eliminating straps altogether.

Eliminating Straps

Top 5 personal discoveries during these three weeks: 1. Team projects are hard. They’re even harder on 50 hours of sleep in 23 days. 2. I need a more comfortable chair. 3. You know what never gets old? Coffee... and pizza. And Netflix streaming. 4. Not to worry. The work eventually ends and sunrises are always sublime. 5. You really can find the strangest things at the Goodwill.

Validate - Take I (Two Weeks)

2 staple guns / 1 roll of duct tape / 4 packages of fabric weld / 2 flip flops / 5 pairs of pants / 3 sheets of technogel / 10 ft of nylon webbing / 1 sq ft of insulation foam / 1 camping mat / 2 elastic conditioning bands / Lots & lots of coffee

Validate - Take II (One Week)

After presenting our initial findings, we were directed to further explore strap concepts before NIOSH went back to their manufacturing partner. In this validation, we continued refining the idea of relocating the straps away from the rear of the knee by creating customizable mounting points on the pant legs.

To validate, we drew a grid on our sketch pants to record the preferred mounting points of various users. We then modified the mounting straps of an existing pad with gator clips that could attach to any point on the grid. Our findings appear in the graph above.

Final Proposal

Benchmarking showed pad and other safety technology, as well as market customization were relatively mature -- just not for mining. Given the complex environment in low-seam, rather than an isolated pad, we proposed a more lateral solution inspired by similarly demanding activities including snowboarding, paint ball, logging, athletics, motocross, manual labor, and the military. Furthermore, our design sought to introduce a cultural shift towards technical gear as a way of acknowledging the broader concerns and ownership of one’s safety, while also providing a means for personal expression and even friendly competition. Our final recommendation: A feature-rich pant, specifically tuned for rough terrain, dirt, and varying temperature & moisture conditions in lieu of everyday pads over jeans or dickies.

03. lucid Desktop organizers puzzle me. Multiple oddly-shaped compartments that hold an inconvenience of nothing, with the occasional built-in cello tape dispenser. Why? For a week, I melted, welded, bent, drilled, milled, band-sawed, polished, jigged, souped, and oven-formed acrylic (1/4”, 300ºF, 18min). I wanted something simple: Two main wells for assorted utensils and the middle bin, the exact volume of a 100-count box of jumbo paper clips. My design accommodates fingers of a 75% male allowing for easy retrieval and cleaning. Paper clip bin also has radiused internal edges providing easy pickings right down to the last one. I particularly enjoy the contrast clear acrylic has with your typical opaque organizers and how this quality shifts priority to the owner’s particular taste in tools. Organized, yet not entirely contained.

Buckle concept conveniently locates charger right next the main offender in your pocket. Genesis 05 Fictional client project: My friend Matt relies on his smartphone for news, entertainment, e-mail, and directions. My concept was another take on a portable dynamo generator, this time built into a protective cellphone case. I attempted to skin the case using my 42Y-Recon spaceship (next 2 pages) for styling cues as well as some earthy tones as a nod towards sustainability -brown, green, & blue for nature -- and cadmium orange for my client’s favorite color. Features 06 In theory, one would a) remove the phone from the case, b) squeeze the empty case like one of those grip exercisers to charge a separate battery stored inside, and c) replace the phone in the case to charge off the energy just generated.

:Polish Guaranteed Tough. Shovels are relatively straightforward tools -- you know where the business-end is, you know what it does, and, dude, it’s hardened steel. In designing the accentuated stomp area, the DeWalt brand was an easy, but purposeful overlay. Their chunky grips, big honkin’ batteries, and saturated color scheme leave nothing implied; all statement. Deciding to incorporate a stickshift styled grip was a short leap as well -- who doesn’t associate tools and labor with some kind of cartoon-sized manual-transmission 10-ton vehicle that could drive through a brick wall? DeWalt. Guaranteed Tough, period.

Problem:

It’s the age-old problem: round peg; square Hole. Tubeshaped bottles waste space in bags otherwise optimized for laptops and 8.5” x 11” paper.

Solution:

A slimmer, rectangular form for easy bag stowage + increased bulk-shipping efficiency.

Problem: Make a lamp. Typical. Thoughts: I have too many possessions; most of which go to little use on a daily basis. Solution: SCAMPER + Jenga Afterthoughts:    I had already “finished” when, ten minutes into my commute, I realized what a real challenge would be: to incorporate a common Jenga move as the on/ off switch. I can tell you, there’s not a lot of block left to work with once you jam a lamp in there. The throw and hollow ‘knock’ of the switch is especially satisfying. -As for this mock ad, I thought I’d embrace the “kitsch.” Thanks to Etsy, I’m about 92% sure I’ll never have to buy anything mass-produced ever again. Sure you can find most items on the general interwebs (hello, amazon.com ), but does it come fitted into an original 1980’s retro Nintendo controller? I think not.
