Things have definitely progressed in the way that the various Music Export Offices operate. In the early days many were just an extension of Government Trade departments and were run by well meaning staff with no real music business experience. Some financial back up was extended to companies and artists who knew how to access the systems and trade events like Midem saw these offices as a replacement for the record companies when selling expensive stand space. But those who were charged with actually alerting the rest of the world to their countries’ music talent have in many cases learned how work with and within the international music industry becoming a vital element in the development of new talent. One of the best examples of how the Export Offices have moved on is evidenced by the coming together of the Nordic country offices – all pretty effective in their own right – to work together under the title of NOMEX. Nordic Music Export is a collaborative organisation for all the Nordic Music Export offices; i.e. Music Export Finland, Export Music Sweden, Music Export Norway, Music Export Denmark and Iceland Music Export. Administrated by Music Export Finland the non-profit organisation’s stated objective is to work on projects beyond the Nordic territory together with its members, to strengthen the Intra-Nordic market and to provide support services to its members. VIP News has had direct experience of the Nordic excursions into the UK market – in the last few weeks I have attended events at the Residence of the Finnish Ambassador promoting the next project of accordion virtuoso Kimmo Pohjonen, a performance by three of Katzenjammer – the all girl band has four members usually, but one was ill – at the Norwegian Embassy, and last but not least the second birthday celebrations (In partnership with Record of the Day) of Ja Ja Ja - the monthly club night at The Lexington in London for Nordic music. This regular club night has been a great success in introducing Nordic Music to the UK market, and the presence of various well known agents and other UK professionals indicate how seriously it is taken by the London business. The line up for the 2cnd Anniversary presented Sóley from Iceland, French Film from Finland and Marit Larsen from Norway. Larsen is a big star in Norway, and successful in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Her debut Under the Surface (2006) went gold in only three weeks and her follow up album The Chase (2008) included the track ‘If A Song Could Get Me You’ which took up residence in the Norway single chart for twenty-four weeks! So far she has sold over 300 thousand singles and 250 thousand albums. Anna Hildur of Export Music Iceland told VIP News, “Ja Ja Ja is one of the first pilot projects all the Nordic Export Offices have invested in and worked on together. It has grown a reputation as one of the

Paulina Ahokas leaves Music Export Finland best showcase nights for Nordic Music in London. Sóley from Iceland participated in the second anniversary show and she is definitely one of the artists to look out for from Iceland at the moment. Her show at Iceland Airwaves was a great success and JaJaJa came as a good follow up to emphasize her talent to the UK media and industry. She has been signed to Morr Music in Germany but will definitely be noticed in 2012. This is a quality showcase which has served the Icelandic bands that have participated well.” Jonas Vebner of Music Export Norway who is based in London commented, “The 2 year anniversary night went down like a storm and it felt good to end 2011 on such a high note. The night was sold out as the previous ones and we had a strong industry turn-out. All bands, Marit Larsen/French Films/Soley, have reported tangible outcomes already, some of them of major strategic importance to their international carrier trajectory. The night lasted till the wee hours and we enjoyed copious amounts of smorgosbord, other Nordic treats and of course - a big birthday cake!” Vebner stated that the intention is to continue the Ja Ja Ja project next year, “We’re all really chuffed about the development of the night and look forward to a busy 2012 where we look forward to unveil some new exciting partnerships.” Further developments in the Nordic (what happened to the use of the term Scandinavian? – Ed.) activities include the departure of one of the driving forces behind the international development of Finnish music talent and the Nordic cooperation.
