With less than 7 hours left of the 2008 I sit down to pen my last column of the year. 2008 has been an exciting year of discovery, change, learning curves, growth, new friendships, treasured moments with friends and family and extreme gratitude.

On Christmas day, my mother and I took on the project of creating our vision boards. After several hours of cutting out pictures and words from magazines we were ready to carefully place them on our boards. I helped my mom put her board together first since I was so pleased she was up to this challenge. Her board was 4 feet wide by 3 feet tall. She was very pleased with the outcome and felt that this would help her with her health goals. Several days earlier I had started collecting my words and pictures. After my mother's board was complete, I started on mine. Well I must say that I had so much fun creating my vision board. The end result was 4 feet wide by 6 feet tall. I have it strategically placed in my office where I can see it, sit in front of it and joyfully go over every word, picture, feeling, and sensation. Look out 2009! A couple days later my brother, sister in-law and nephew arrived from Houston, Texas. We opened each other's cards and gifts after they were settled in and once again I was taken back with such gratitude for the opportunity to spend this time with them. This year is very special since over the past 25 years we have spent so few Christmas's together due to the distance barrier between us. So tomorrow on New Years day we will have our turkey supper together and bring in the year with thanks. We express gratitude and appreciation to our interactive columnists, contributors and artists who continue to inspire, awaken and touch the lives of January 2009

In this day and age, these modern wingless angels are all but ignored and denied on a regular, if not alarming, basis. Essential versus Fragrance Oils Part 1: What is a Pure Essential Oil? By Klaus Ferlow
While Canadians are familiar with synthetic fragrance oils, by and large, they have little or no knowledge about therapeutic health benefits of genuine, pure essential oils. Unlike North America, in Europe, high quality botanical plant derived essential oils are prescribed for internal use by medical doctors in hospitals. In the last decade essential oils have become a popular item, sold everywhere, which raises the question, “Does the consumer really know what they are getting?”
What is A Genuine Pure Essential Oil? Essential oils are more then merely plant secretions. The evaporation of essences from plant surface is a defence mechanism against infection by bacteria, fungi and pests. Aromatic plants have a protective aura of scent, just as all living things have an aura light. This aromatic aura also protects plants from excesses of heat and cold. To qualify as an essential oil, it must be 100% natural, preferable harvested from certified organic plants or wild crafted, and free of herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizer. A description of the biochemical compounds (using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry) will confirm if an oil is 100% authentic and contaminant-free. There are five different processes for making essential oils: - Steam distillation (this method produces the highest quality oil, but it must be slow and prolonged - Solvent extraction - Expression - Maceration - Enfleurage
Assessing Quality To assess quality, the label and/or therapeutic fact sheet should have these items listed: Complete Latin name, genus and species The distilled part: it is vital to know which of the plant (flower, leaf, bark etc.) has been distilled The chemotype: recognized internationally, and widely used in scientific publications, chemotypes, are associated with the Latin scientific denomination,
allows the perfect comprehension of the mode of action of an essential oil, so an oil can be used correctly. The type of soil, altitude, sunlight, climate, and surrounding plant population are all elements that influence the essence manufactured by the plant.
The Price All essential oils are not created equal. The price reflects many factors, such as the number of kilos of plant materials needed to make an essential oil, which is why they are sold in bottles of 5, 10 or 15 ml only. Some oils are even sold by the drop. I.E. a 1 kilo (approx. 1 litre) requires: 6 to 7 kg of clove flower buds, 50 kg of lavendin, 150 kg of true lavender, or 3500 – 4000 kg of Damask flower rose (1 hectare of roses)!

Old Confusion By Shelley Erickson For most of the last few weeks, I have been visited by an uninvited guest, named Confusion. I blamed her visit on what was happening outside me, but it really all started inside. It was a vicious circle. What I thought about, I got more of, and what I got more of, I thought more about, and the more I thought about it ‌.. Well, you know how that goes. Like a small child being ignored, Confusion stamped her feet when I thought I could put her in the corner, hoping she would go away; twas not the case. About that time I started getting nauseated; she even insisted I stay home from work. Of course continuing on my new exercise routine was out of the question. She knew that if I went for a walk, my head would begin to clear and she would be kicked out of her comfy old chair. There was no ignoring her; I found when I did she tended to bring home her nasty friends, Resentful and Victim too!
society? And who is the friend I am most comfortable with anyway, Pride or Peace? I have begun to realize that when I am gripped with the need for guarantees in my life it is because I have opened the door to Fear, and have allowed her and old friends merrymaking in my head. The fog lifts quickly when I really understand in my heart that I am one with all. That each and every one of us is doing the best we can at each moment. I am no longer afraid of the future, for Love is always there to lead when I remember to get myself out of the way. The sun shines brightly when Acceptance is my mentor. Funny thing I notice about my friends, when I am accepting of them, I find they are more accepting of me. Or is it I am more accepting of me? Little by little I began to feel Peace slip in by way of the shadows; Love filtered through the drawn shades; Joy even danced across my room every once in a while. Acceptance stood in the doorway with her hands on her hips, eye brows raised as if I dare question her authority again. I shall not today; and hopefully not tomorrow lest I fancy another visit with old Confusion again. Slowly through the fog, I began to realize it was Expectation that invited Confusion to disrupt my contented life. I can look back and say, even though this was a most uncomfortable visit, it was a great opportunity for me; for old Confusion made me ask some new questions about myself. Today I choose to entertain Presence instead, knowing that if for one reason or another I let Confusion creep in, it is of my own doing. For I can change what it is I am feeling by changing what it is I am thinking. I can change what I allow to affect me by paying attention to what meaning I allot to it, always asking where my original thought came from‌ my authentic self or January 2009

The First Time By Lori Balch Let me ask you a quick question? Would you consider yourself open-minded? Well, of course you do! Consider this. What if there 'were no accidents'? Is it possible that perchance your eyes were meant to peruse these words today? Like the time you didn't feel like going out with friends, but ended up meeting and marrying the man of your dreams, or the time you opted out of lunch with work mates only to find yourself browsing an old bookstore and finding the book you had given up all hope of finding. It makes you wonder; doesn't it? So, I invite you to read on, who knows, you just might find something here that tickles your soul, or at very least entertains your curiosity. They said anyone could do it. I, of course, had my doubts. I assumed that channeling was exclusive to the chosen few, the gifted, those belonging to the private club. Never, ever, did I think it was for the curious and inexperienced, like me. Lee Carrol describes channeling as "the word of Spirit (or God) as given to a human or humans for their enlightenment and information." (Lee Carrol, in 'A New Dispensation, Plain Talk for Confusing Times', Kryon Book Ten). Recorded history tells us of many who have channeled. The most famous, of course, was Edgar Cayce, known as 'The Sleeping Prophet'. Today there are over 14,000 of his readings on file at the Cayce Foundation--the Association of Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach. 'Channeling is a skill that can be learned,' were the first words I read in 'Opening to Channel' by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer. The owner of the little store literally placed the soft paperback in my hand as she whispered, "This is the book you need." Crinkling my brows, I wondered what she knew. Curious, I purchased the book. I hurried home with my new treasure and at once began to read. I shoved each word into my brain like food to a starving man, taking little time to taste its flavor. I read the background information and then studied the process. Before I knew it, the journey had begun. January 2009
Focus and Concentration The formula seemed simple and uncomplicated. Learning to quiet the mind was something I did often in meditation, so swiftly I graduated to the next step. This involved enhancing one's focus and concentration. Holding my favorite crystal, I directed all thoughts toward achieving a relaxed state. Attuning Next I would expand my skills at attuning to life force energy by getting to know the silky red petals of the Petunia plant I had recently purchased for my garden. I was learning to feel its life form and energy. I love to garden; but clearly, I had never established such an intimate bond with my flowers before. I half expected it to open up and hug me. Personal Trance Posture and Position Finally, I would learn to develop my personal trance posture and position. Without question, the most difficult step of all. This involved observing the stillness within, while experiencing and maintaining a sense of love and compassion--beyond the norm. Learning to feel centered, loving, balanced, and open, for the duration of the exercise. With practice, I felt I had passed the required tests that preceded each level and was excited to begin. The authors said that I would feel a great sense of compassion as my guides joined with me and began to channel verbally using my vocal cords. I prepared as instructed and attempted several times. Nothing happened. Not one to give up without a good fight, I knew there had to be another way. I realized that either consciously or subconsciously I had decided that this mode of communication was not going to work for me. Somehow I was blocking the process. Back to the drawing board, I went in search of a Plan B. Plan B The tools to this alternate mode of communication

The First Time continued.... were simple; all I needed was a sharp pencil and a blank piece of paper. I prepared as before, but this time I was armed with my trusty pencil resting lightly between my fingers. If the thing was going to move, it sure wasn't getting any help from me. Time stood still as I lingered quietly in this unfamiliar space. I seemed to be experiencing a heightened state of consciousness. Strange however, I could still feel the delicate, soft fur of my faithful canine companions as they slumbered peacefully by my side. Through my open window, I was aware of the angry chatter of squirrels as they went about the business of protecting their young, and I could smell the sweet fragrance of freshly cut grass from the park across the street. Contact. It was subtle at first, like fresh rain dancing on my skin. A warm tingling began in my upper arm and radiated lovingly down my fingertips. Without a doubt, I knew this encounter was genuine. That solitary and unbelievably magical moment, when one single grain of sand slipped unnoticed through the hourglass, will forever be edged in my mind. Ever so gently, I felt the pencil right itself in my hand. It was like something was seeing and feeling the world with me. Soon the energies grew in intensity and my hand began to shake uncontrollably, but with that, the pencil began to move. It took off like a shopper on bargain day at the supermarket. My hand moved erratically across the paper as it dragged the pencil along, creating lines and circles. A euphoric smile broke free on my face and through closed eyes, tears ran tenderly down my flushed cheeks. In the stillness I sat in wonder. I had made contact, but with who or what? Incredible feelings coursed through me as I opened my eyes and looked at the paper. The little drawing resembled an old map of the world. The lines were soft, yet glowed with love. I grinned as I hid my secret away in a drawer.
I made a point of finding time daily to make the connection with what I felt was a spirit friend. In short time, the lines transformed themselves into written words and I was given a name. In plain language I learned that I was communicating with an individual energy that was part of a larger group or vibration. Within a month I was guided to use my 'writing machine', and the words came easily, filling pages and pages of typewritten notes. I have to confess; at first my ego reared its ugly head and tried to convince me that I had been chosen for greatness. Thankfully, I was reminded that every single one of us is meant for greatness. We merely have to re-member who we are and why we have come. I have recognized that I was not 'chosen,' but that I chose to make this happen. I am still trying to understand what purpose this all serves for me. The words are sometimes new, but often times a gentle reminder of my life purpose. I believe we ALL have access to this sacred place. We simply have to make the choice and ultimately the effort, to create the link. I tried the same process again a few days later and to my great joy and with ease, I experienced the same sensations; but this time the energies seemed even more passionate. Exiled from Chile during a military coup, her family relocated to Mexico in the early seventies, where she grew up on the grounds of a unique ecumenical retreat centre that hosted hundreds of people each year. Her religious family background was steeped in her parent's dedication to social justice and human rights within the progressive Catholic Church, and Ivonne always felt the full freedom to explore many avenues of spiritual insight and loved the study of comparative religion. The family approach to health took full advantage of the many options available in Mexico, combining homeopathy, Chinese medicine, and herbalism. The "alternative" was the norm. Blessed with the support of a network of intuitive practitioners over the years, Ivonne began a path of self-discovery in her early teens, often giving voice to her journey through songwriting. After completing a degree in Latin American Studies in Northern California, she returned to Mexico with her partner and married in 1994. The pregnancy and birth of her first child brought forth a profound healing opportunity through the spiritual connection between mother and child. The importance of living that bond consciously blossomed further with the birth of her second child. Their delivery by a homeopathic midwife fueled a growing interest in becoming an alternative health practitioner. Ivonne became fixated with the idea of studying naturopathy and began to lose touch with the gift of living in the moment...then God stepped in. In 1998 a severe illness abruptly separated her from her family for the first time ever, placing her firmly in the role of receiver. Through a convalescence period of nearly a year, Ivonne discovered the many lessons of the experience as she learned about non-judgement, openness, patience, and deep, unconditional love. One

of the greatest gifts was her shift into energetic and intuitive healing, a journey that continues to unfold to this day. She and her family moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2002. Spirit has continued to guide her, presenting a myriad of connections and opportunities to further her own learning. Cora Rennie begins her story in 2004 when she was expecting her second child. She visited a Chiropractor who did muscle testing with her and was intrigued by the practice, which opened a whole new door for her - to the energies of the body, and the concepts of natural healing in general. After her son was born, she struggled with what she now knows was Post-Partum Depression, and a throw-back to the experience of colic with her firstborn. She felt challenged emotionally, spiritually and mentally, and in her search for wellness (and without having great success with muscle testing for herself) she discovered the practice of using a pendulum. One fateful day, instead of picking up the pendulum, she found herself simply placing her head into her hands. Unexpectedly, tears began to flow and she had the thought "This is Reiki."
Baby Steps When she had first been told about an energy technique called Reiki, Cora's reaction was, "I can't feel energy." Nevertheless, she now realized that Reiki was the next step, and proceeded with level one training. She practiced on family and friends, eventually continuing on to take her Second Degree training twice, with two different Masters. With Reiki as a daily influence in her life, her confidence and awareness blossomed and it was well before her own Master's level training that the notion took hold of her to become a practitioner in order to treat others. Cora's natural sense of joy and humility brought more strength as she began exploring other modalities in the alternative healing field, including CranioSacral Therapy, and the work of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Her growth in the use of these modalities has come about because she practices diligently on herself and the family. For example, when her seven-year-old daughter recently had to undergo dental surgery, she employed EFT for four days prior to the procedure. She and her daughter

"tapped" again just before and after the surgery. The nurses were amazed at what a good patient this little seven-year-old was, and her recovery was speedy. Where she was expected to feel drowsy and out of sorts from the after-effects of the anesthesia, she instead was wide-awake and wanted to go out and play. The only thing that this little girl complained about was that they hadn't given her the tooth they extracted! When she later discovered that the tooth fairy visited anyway, all was well once again.
Throughout this journey into alternative therapies, Cora is constantly researching. She is a sponge for knowledge and wants to know all that she can to assist herself, her family, and now that she has opened her doors professionally - her community. Cora is a registered alternative Health Practitioner with the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada.
A Military Life Cora's compassionate nature has a lot to do with her lifestyle and the influence that her husband's employment has on their family life. Cora's husband is in the Canadian Military and has been away from home on training and deployment for the better part of the past year. Cora openly admits, "I don't know what I would do without the ability to use EFT on myself to maintain a sense of peace." Gypsy Woman Juey Ann MacLeod has let nothing stop her in her adventures around the world. In the process, she has learned about life, love and most importantly herself. Her story begins in the corporate world where she was for 25 years, while living in one of Canada's busiest cities, Vancouver B.C. One day in the mid 1999, she gave it all up and began a six-month journey throughout North America. Juey Ann turned Gypsy, putting over 65,000 kilometers on her car and thousands of airmiles. 403-729-2170 www.nurturingnergy. com The Beginning of the Journey… The three-year-old child with third degree burns on her face could tell the difference. She knew people were looking at her oddly after the accident. They were treating her different than before. She began to feel abandoned and alone. When she looked into a mirror, all she saw was ugly burns, still in the healing process. They scared her and she began to withdraw. As she grew, the burns healed, leaving minimal physical scarring, but the scars in her psyche ran deep. She withdrew more, developing a passion for books and animals. Evolving into adulthood brought Nadine through more difficult and traumatic experiences and today she is grateful. She is grateful for the challenges that taught her how to be kinder, more empathetic and more understanding of others who struggle. Over the Years… Nadine Gordon is a country girl born and raised in Alberta. Her love of books drove her to continually study and research things that intruiged her. Along with her love of books, came a passionate love for writing. Over the years, she has been published in various papers and magazines including a Calgary Magazine, Horses All; where she wrote an article about the 1994 round up of the wild horses of Suffield. A similar article was featured in the Strathmore Standard. Her passion for animals particularly horses; led her to study and acquire her Animal Sciences Diploma. Nadine was an officer who worked in the Correctional Field for fifteen years. She trained in self-defense and various other courses such as counseling to assist her with Government work. Finally, struggling with exhaustion, anxiety and depression, she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome, which forced her to leave her employment as a Correctional Officer behind. Prescribed medications did not help. After 4 to 6 months, Nadine sought out wellness from other, more natural sources. She turned to yoga,

engaged in psychological counseling and was drawn to experience and study Reiki. Through these studies, she found her way out of Correctional work, and into the world of natural healing. It was a perfect fit as she began to learn how to help others overcome their challenges and live healthier, happier lives that are more productive.
Nadine refers to herself as a Dreamwalker. She defines herself as 'One who has awakened and is walking her dream.' Her role is to, 'assist others to walk their dreams.' She states that, "A Dreamwalker is a person who is able to traverse all worlds in any dimension, past present or future through the light or darkness to access hidden dreams in order to bring about wholeness or healing for the client or self. This can be done in a lucid state or out-of-body trance. A Dreamwalker will bring you what you need, alchemy. It may be a message from the other side, healing, counseling, a laugh, exercise, meditation, or change in diet. You will be given work to do so you stay grounded and in balance, this enables you to retreat to your dreams but live in the present." Today… She now resides just outside of Leslieville, Alberta, and from there runs a Sanctuary called Nurturing ‘NerGy. At the Sanctuary, she teaches various workshops entitled, Latent Energy Level 1 and Advanced, as well as a Course in Animal Wisdom. She also sees clients for private consultations by appointment, and usually utilizes the Usui System of Reiki in her work. In her counseling work, Nadine strives to assist her clients in balancing mind, body and spirit. She utilizes psychometry, her intuition and her counseling background, as well as everything she has learned through her extensive research. Her own experiences with pain, heartbreak, isolation and fear drive her to share with the world tools she learned to use which helped her to become well again. Nadine currently writes a column for the Violet Ray Magazine entitled "Scrolls of the Dreamwalker", and is in the final development stages of releasing her first book. I brought home stray pets and I was always sharing my food and toys. My father was a preacher and we did not have much money. In those days preachers lived mostly from love offerings from their congregation. When the congregation was having money struggles they could not afford to give the preacher and his family money. Many times I remember eating dandelions. My mom became an expert in preparing dandelions - dandelion greens, stew, broth, etc. I do know what it was like to go to bed hungry and I would lie in bed as a child visualizing eating a turkey dinner with stuffing and all the trimmings and finishing it off with pumpkin pie. I found to my surprise that this did work and I didn't feel quite as hungry. Of course there was that little, gnawing, irritating pain in my stomach asking for food. I started to work very young cleaning dog kennels and working at my paper route. Every cent I made went to the family for food. My desire to help others became even stronger, so they would not have to experience what I did. As I got older, I came to the conclusion that I really could change my world and the people in and around it by changing my negative thinking to positive thinking, one new, positive thought and one new action at a time. I discovered the Affirmation process quite by accident. When my son David was born with crooked feet I did an Affirmation that he would walk. At that time I did not even know what the word Affirmation meant, much less how it worked. I looked at my baby son and said with conviction to him, "David you will walk." I told others that he would walk and I kept that belief at the forefront of my mind. Then I was introduced to a wonderful organization the Shriners, who accepted David and took care of the surgery, the lengthy hospital stay and after treatment. My Affirmation, that I said with love that only a mother could feel for her child, worked!

The Affirmation process that I teach has worked for me in every area of my life, with exceptional and miraculous results. I have also been nicknamed the Affirmations Doctor. As I feel it is so important to teach children the power of the spoken word-Affirmations I have created several Children's Affirmation Programs such as KAP And also Motivational Affirmation Club, (MAC), in a club setting where kids really feel that they can belong. I am so honored and blessed that I am in a position to shed the wondrous light of Hope to people everywhere. Let's Meet Kathy Kathy graduated with honors on February 28th 2003, from The Alberta Institute of Massage and is a registered member in good standing with the Natural Health Practitioners of Alberta (NHPC). Even though she had done so well in training, she was guided to work for an established and reputable massage clinic for the past five years. Kathy’s intention was to start her own business, but she wanted to learn through observing how to become an independent businessperson. Ortho-Bionomy facilitates the therapeutic process and promotes natural body alignment, balance and pain relief. The practitioner works with you to identify areas of discomfort, tension and pain as well as areas of comfort and ease of movement. The use of gentle movements, comfortable positioning and compression are incorporated. No forceful movements are used. The training to become certified in Ortho-Bionomy is intense, and Kathy is currently completing the 505 required hours in the Practitioner program. The program consists of over 15 different required classes, as well as over 10 different electives to choose from. Once completed, she will have the option of continuing on to the Advanced Practitioner level, which is another 500 hours of study. Ortho-Bionomy is a system that allows us to integrate our physical, emotional and mental experiences. Once the client becomes more aware of their own physical tensions, they can gradually learn to connect both the physical and energetic patterns within the body to affect a change without necessarily engaging physically Massage Therapy is not a requirement to learn Ortho-Bionomy, but Kathy feels fortunate to be able to incorporate these techniques into her massage sessions. Reiki Master Stephanie Monsen's first personal experience with a healing modality called the Yuen Method™ in May 2006 was, as she put it, "spectacular". This experience was the final step on a journey of self-discovery and learning that led her to create Watersong Wellness. As a senior executive for a national financial services firm, Stephanie observed how health issues, difficult relationships, stress and anxiety could deeply impact an individual's well being in all areas of their life. Four weeks later, Stephanie had made a full recovery and was back at work. Her doctor was amazed at the state of her lung. It was as if it had never been injured! With a focus on her journey to make a difference, Pam became a Paramedic in 1992.
