The 1940 GM Futurliner
For nearly two decades in the mid-20th century, General Motors made a determined effort to bring cutting-edge science and technology to the American heartland through a program called the Parade of Progress. And nothing personified that spirit more than the shiny red-and-chrome 1940 GM Futurliner. The Futurliner was a behemoth, 33 feet long, 9 feet wide and more than 11 feet tall, weighing 15 tons. Sporting eight spiffy white-wall tires, the Futurliner had a maximum speed as stated at 55 mph, although some sources suggest they couldn’t top 40. But they sure looked speedy, giving off a Buck Rogers vibe. With a backlit stylized art deco GM logo on the nose, they looked like… the future.
What a great day. About 20 members assembled at the club rooms for a cuppa .About 12 cars set off on a car run heading to Cave. Traveling the inland back roads to Otio then down the main road to Pareora River Road, where a few questions had to be answered for the rest of the way . A stop at Southburn resulted in one car (a FORD escort)refused to start. Alot of different ideas of what was wrong with it, but as it turned out it needed a rest, then after a few tries it burst into life, (so did Steve he had a worried look on his face). On our way again taking the back road and down the Armstrong Zigzag then into Cave hotel.
A couple of drinks a natter then lunch, it was awesome. The winner of the day was Lindsay Anderton and his wife. A 40 dollar fuel voucher, Congratulations Guys. Cave hotel was another great place to hold a Function, very welcoming, Reasonably priced and well organized with the whole 20 meals coming out at once. Thank you to those guys.
At About 3 to 3.30 we started to depart Cave to make our way home
Thankyou to those members that took part I hope you all enjoyed yourselves. And thanks to Peter Bland for helping me to organize the run. Till next year. Cheers
Owen Duthie
