Weatherpermitting,thereisadeadtreeonthedriveway whichwillbecutdown.Ifyoucan,pleasebringalongsaws andchainsaws,andifyouwouldlikesomefreefirewood, bringyourtrailer.

Ifyouarenotabletoorwouldrathernotassistwiththetree trimmingandcutting,thereisongoingtidyingupofthe propertyandgardeningwhichneedsattention. Pleasebringsomegardeningtools.

HiEveryone,theweatherhascertainlygottenalittlecooler. Thepoorgardenplantsdon’tknowwhattodo.Ihavehydrangeas thataredroppingtheirleaves,butatthesametimehavenew flowersonthem.Thereareevenspringbulbscomingupallover mygardens.

TheLadiesFellowshipgrouphadagreattimelookingaround gardensandoutforlunch.Itwouldbegreattohaveladiescome downtoHorowhenuabranchofVCConthe5th April.Bringlunch fornogginnatterwithothermembersofotherbranchesofVCC. Iamonlytoohappytotakeacarloaddown,justgivemeacallifyouwishtohavearide. WehadalotoffunattheclubnightattheAuction.AbigthankyoutoCathyandGlynfor organizingtheAuction.Someofthethingsdidn’tgetmuchbiddinguntilGlynaddedadozen eggsoracake.AbigthankyoutoHarryforbeingthepersontoshowalltheitemsforsale. IwishtothankallthosewhodonatedgoodsfortheAuction.

Aswearegoingtohavelessbigrallieson,itwouldbegoodtohavemorepeopleandcars joinusonSundayRunsandonclubnights.Weneedtomaketheclubnightsinterestingfor everyone.Asforclubnights,ifthereistopicorpersonthatwouldlovetohaveonclubnights pleasecontactEstherwiththeinformation.Theclubnightsareforallmembersandvisitors tocomealongtoo.

Hereweare,inthemiddleofMarch2025andthemonthsareflying by.It'sonly280daysuntilChristmas,andIknowthatwehave someChristmasEnthusiastMemberswhoarejustitchingtoputup ChristmasdecorationsandTreesagain!

MarchhasbeenaverybusymonthforGlynandI.Wespentthe secondweekendofthemonthinChristchurchattheExecutive Meeting,anditwasgreattohaveEstherWilliamsjoinusasBranchDelegate.Itwasavery “robust”meetingattimes,mostitemsontheagendacompleted. MyreportwillbeintheMayTourer.

ThisweekendGlynandIareofftosunnyNewPlymouthtojointheTaranakiBranchin celebratingtheir60thAnniversaryoftheMaungaMoanaRallyandGlynwillalsobepresenting LongServiceAwardsattheCelebrationDinner.Iflastyearisanythingtogoby,itshouldbe agreatweekendofdrivingandsocialising!IwonderifManawatuBranchwilltakeoutallthe prizesthisyear?

CLUB CAPTAIN’S RAMBLE -

The2025editionoftheRuahineRamblewasenjoyedbyeveryone whoattendedwith31entriesincluding9fromHorowhenuabranch makingagreatmixofVehiclesandagoodnumberofpeoplestaying onfortheBBQattheendoftheday.

Ihad47bookedinfortheBBQanditwasnicetoseeEsther,Cathy andGlyndropinfordinnerafterflyingbackfromtheChristchurch executivemeeting.

Abigthankstoallthepeopleattheendofthenighthelpingwith thecleanupandthedishes-itcertainlymadeforaneasierendtothenightforme.

TheSundayJaunttotheRushcollectionwasdefinitelyagreatwaytospendafewhoursona Sundayafternoonandleftmostinaweofwhatisparkedupinlocalsheds.

Thisyear’sHighlandFlingisprogressingwell.Wearecurrentlysittingat83entrieswiththem stillslowlytricklinginastheydidlastyearrightuptothelastcoupleofdays.

LastweekendIrantheSundayrouteinitsentiretywithacoupleofnon-carclubpeople followingupintheirUte.Theywereabsolutelyblownawaywithroadsandsceneryaswellas thecoupleoffarmswetravelledoversomuchsotheyaretaggingalongthiscomingweekend tochecktheSaturdayroutethatincludesfourfarmsandanunmaintainedroad.

ForthenextSundayJauntI’mtryingtosortoutaveryinterestingcollectionontheedgeof PalmerstonNorth.

TheMarchissueoftheTourerincludedanarticlewhichremindedusthatin1998,Laurie Cockerreceivedthe“JohnLGoddardTrophy”,theVintageCarClub’shighestachievement awardforhisexploitsoftimespent,andmileagecoveredinhis1906Cadillac.

Thatarticlealsohighlightedanothermilestone-therecent‘clockingup’of100,000milesin thatverysame1906Cadillac.

Theownerofthis1929ModelAFordTownSedanprobablyfoundagooduseforthesidemountedsparetyre sinceitlooksasthoughtherightfrontwheelwasruinedbythecrash.Photographtakenon20th May1931.

Someoneremodelledthefrontendofthis1929Buickwithanimmovableobject.Thecarwas probablyscrappedbecauseofthisaccident.Theseries121roadsterwasonlyfouryearsoldwhenthis photographwastakenon17th April1933.Nodoubt,today’srestorerscouldfindawaytousetherestof thebodywhichappearstobeinexcellentshape.Only6195ofthesecarswerebuilt.

ItsFridaymorningandweareheadingofftoNewPlymouthtodotheTaranakiBranches MaungaMoanarally.Althoughitisthe60thrunningofthisevent,thiswillonlybeour2nd time.

WeweremakinggoodtimeuntilnorthofWanganuiwespottedGlynandCathClements stoppedonthesideoftheroad,bonnetandbootlidopen.Myrtl'sfuelpumphadstopped working.Glynwasunderthebonnetworkingonitbutwashavingtroublebecausethecase thathethoughtcontainedhisglasses,infactcontainedCathssunglasses.Fortunatelymy glassesweregoodenoughtoenableGlyntoseewhathewasdoing.Usingthesparefuel pumpinthebootandswappingpartsbetweenthe2fuelpumps,GlynwasabletogetMyrtl runningagain.TherestofthetriptoNewPlymouthwasuneventful.

Aftercheckinginandgettingourrallypacksitwasofftothebarforafewdrinks.Therewas anoptionaltreasurehuntaroundNewPlymouthfridayeveningbutafterthedriveupwe decidedtogiveitamiss.Fromwhatweheardthosewhodiddoithadanenjoyabletime.

Saturdaywasrallyday.Anotherwarmsunnyday.WehadtobeatHickfordParkinBellBlock by9amforbriefingwithfirstcaraway20minuteslater.

There42entrantswithManawaturepresented3cars,AlanandRobynHenryintheirMG, GlynandCathClementsintheirMorrisMinor,andAnnetteandmyselfinourHumber80. Themorningsectionwas70milesofwindinghillyroadsthroughbeautifulTaranaki countryside.Therewereafewtiredarmsatthelunchstopandthelowergearsofsomecars hadagoodworkout.

ThelunchstopwasatDudleyHallKaimiro,about3milesfromInglewood.Afteralonglunch stop,therewasashortrunofabout14milestotheendoftherally.Therestofthe afternoonwasourstodowhateverwewanted.WemadeaquicktriptotheTaranakiparts shedbeforeheadingbacktothehotelforarestafreshenupbeforeheadingdownformore socialising,thendinnerandprizegiving.

Glyn,asNorthIslandClubCaptain,presentedtwoTaranakimemberswiththeir50year badges-DougSurgenorandAnthonyWilson.

Thencamethepresentationontherallytrophies.CongratulationstoGlynandCathon3rd placeintheP60class.

Followingthepresentations,RobThomsongaveashortonthehistoryoftheMaungaMoana rally.Robwasinvolvedintheveryfirstrallyandwastherallysecretaryforthisone,the60th. AlsopresentattherallywereacoupleofentrantswhowerealsoatthefirstrallyBrucePoole (currentlyCentralHawkesBaybutwasaManawatumemberatthetime)andSarahandIan HowellfromtheWanganuiBranch.

Finally,therewasthecuttingofthe60thanniversarycake. Itwasanothergoodweekendaway.ColinJohnstonandTaranakibranchputonawonderful event.

Iencourageyoualltoconsiderattendingthenextone.Itisagoodweekendawayandnot toofartotravel.

TheFordThunderbirdwentthroughtwoproductionruns,from1954to1997and againfrom2002to2005.Thoughit'snamedforamythologicalcreature,Native Americansbelieveditpossessedtraitsofpowerandstrength.Thosearen't shabbycharacteristicsforavehicle.

TheDodgeColtisappropriatelynamed;itssmallbodyisaperfectfitfortheterm "colt,"whichisrepresentativeofayoungmalehorse.Manufacturedfrom1971 to1994,theColtwasasubcompactvehicle.

TheMercuryCougar,firstintroducedin1967,wasadvertisedasasteptoward Ford'sThunderbird.Whatitreallywas,wasaslightlysouped-upversionofthe FordMustang.Cougarsareknownfortheirpowerandabilitytochallenge animalsevenbiggerthanthemselves

There'ssomediscrepancyinFordhistoryaboutwhethertheMustangwasnamed afterthehorseorafighterplanefromWorldWarII.

Whicheveritwas,amustangisstillahorse,andFord'sMustangremainsoneof thebrand'smostpopularsellers.

ThePlymouthBarracudawasverynearlythePlymouthPanda,butthatdidn't nearlyrepresentthestylingorsportinessthattheworld'sfirstponycarexuded. Asforthefishit'snamedfor,thebarracudaisapredatoryfishwithasnake-like appearance.

Whichcamefirst:UniversityofKentuckyWildcatbasketballortheBuickWildcat? TheBuickWildcatwasintroducedin1962;theWildcats'firstbasketballseason datesbackto1903.

Ifthere'sonethingthatthenameRoadRunnerconveys,it'sspeed. PlymouthdidmanagetostrikeupadealwithWarnerBros.tousetheworld's mostfamousroadrunnerinitsadvertising.

Achargerisawarhorse.Soundstough,right?That'sexactlywhatDodge thoughtwhenitchosethenameforitsmuscly,horsepower-fuelledCharger. Andwhowouldn'twantacaryoucouldtakeintobattle?

TheRamblerMarlin(latertheAMCMarlin)wasinproductionforonlyashort periodinthe1960s.

Itsfishynameisfitting,then,sincesomevarietiesoftheactualmarlinare consideredvulnerabletoextinction.

TheMazdaBongoisavanand,yes,it'ssortofshapedlikeadrum,butthat'snot quitewhereitsnamecomesfrom. Instead,itsharesanamewiththeAfricanbongo,atypeofantelope.

MaybetheReliantRobinhasahardtimestayinguprightbecauseitonlyhas threewheels.Yeah,youheardthatright.ThreeWheels. "TopGear"famouslyrolledonesimilartoMr.Bean,whoregularlyrolledanother Reliantproduct,theRegal.

EverheardoftheDatsun(later,Nissan)Bluebird?Don'tworryifyouhaven't. ThisJapanese-madecarenjoysgreaterpopularityininternationalcirclesand evenservesasamodelfrequentlyusedasataxi!
