OurbranchhasbeeninvitedbacktotheJuliaWallaceRetirement Villageontheafternoonof7th Marchtobringcarsfora ‘Parkand Show’ fortheresidents.

Membersmaybeinvited to takesomeoftheresidentsforaquick ridearoundtheVillagegroundsintheirVintageorClassiccar. MeetatJuliaWallaceat1.30pm.ThereisnoneedtoRSVPforthis ‘ParkandShow’ Afternoonteawillbeprovidedmidafternoonforthosemembersparticipating.

HiEveryone,ithascertainlybeenahotanddrysummer,which makesitareallygoodtimetogetthecarsorbikesoutandenjoy thecountryside.

WehadagreatturnoutontheSundayruntoWanganuiandteaat theWanganuiBranchClubRooms.

IamsorrybutIwillbemissingthenextSundayrun,asIwillbein Hamiltonatmygrandson’s1st birthday.ThenextSundayrunwillbe veryinteresting,sodon’tmissoutbynotputtingitonyourcalendarforthe2nd March.

AgreatbigthankyoutothecommitteeofGlynandCathy,KenandAnnetteforputtingona greatMotorCycleRally.Thetouringroutesweregreatandthefoodwasamazing.Theyreally didtheclubproud.Bigthankyoutoallthehelperswhetheryouwerekitchenhelpersor driversofthevansormarshals.IwasveryproudoftheManawatuBranchoftheVCC.

WehadagreatturnoutoftheLadiesFellowshipGroupontheSaturdaypicnicwithladiesand menfromMasterton,Horowhenua,WanganuiandAucklandbranchesjoiningusforalovely lunchanditwasgreattomakecontactwithotherladiesfromthesebranches.So,sorryladies, butIwillnotbethereforthenextSaturdaygettogetherasIwillbeinHamiltonatmy grandson’s1st birthday.

ForourMarchclubnightwearegoingtohaveashinypartsandbric-a-brac,homebakingor preservesetc.auction.Pleasestartgettingthingstogetherfortheauction.Thisisgoingto beagreatfunnight.Themoneythatismadeattheauctionisgoingtogobacktothe memberslateronintheyear.

GlynandIsupportedthesocialsideofDerek’sVeteranRallyonSunday16thFebruary,along withLaurieCockerandLenHaycock.Itwasextremelydisappointingthattherewereonly4 entries,2beingfromManawatuBranch.

IwouldliketoremindALLmembersthatyourBranchCommitteeworksextremelyhard organisingtheseBranchRalliesforyourenjoyment.Wegiveupconsiderablehoursofourown personaltimefortheseevents,(withsomeCommitteeMembersstillworkingfulltimejobs), andallweaskinreturnisthatyouasmemberssupportusbyattending.Youdon’thaveto cometoeveryrallybutitwouldbenicetoseemoreofyouonaregularbasis.

,iscomingup injustovertwoweeksonSunday9thMarch.TheEntryFormwaspublishedintheFebruary Tourerandnodoubtwillbepublishedagaininthisissue.AsatwritingmyScribbles,Ihave beenadvisedthatwehaveonly9Entries,5fromManawatuBranchsofar.Pleasedon’tmake “petrolcosts”theexcuse,weallhavetodealwiththatonadailybasisrunningourmodern vehicles.AsBranchSecretaryIhavea100kmroundtripeveryfewdaystotheClubforone thingoranother,soIknowwhatthecostofpetrolis!

IstronglyencourageyoutoenterforthisAnnualRallyfortheBranch,atimetoshowcaseour amazingCarClubVenueandstrongmemberparticipation.So-comeon-rollupthegarage door,getthosedustclothsoffyourcar,giveitaquickwashandcomeandsupportyourBranch Committee.Somestatsifyouareinterested-The50thRuahineRamblein2014drew63 entries,theRuahineRamblein2024had48entries.

Withsomuchgoingonwithralliesandalsohavingtosortmy29 Chevoutafterblowingaholeintheradiatordoingbackupforthe Motorcyclerallyandcrackingtheheadatthesametimeit’sbeen stupidbusytryingtojugglework, family,Chevrepairsandcarclub commitmentsIcan’twaittillMaywhenitallcalmsdown.

February’sSundayJauntwaswellreceivedwiththeVisittoBruceArdell’spartssupplyandcar collectionitwasquiteaneyeopenerforthosewhohadneverbeenbefore.Oursecondvisit wastoRobandLyndaO’Keefe’sBuickcollectionwasalsowellworththetripacrossWanganui thenontotheWanganuiVCCfordinnerallupIcovered130milesfortheafternoon.

TheRuahineRambleisfirmlyundercontrolwithavariedandinterestingdayaheadfor everyonewiththelunchstopattheBullsDomain.SofarI’vespent7.5hoursworkingonthe ramblewithapproximately3morebeforerallyday.

Thisyear’sHighlandFlingisupto80entriesandhavemanagedtoarrangeaccessto3new farmssoofftochecktheseoutthisweekendonceI’vegottheChevbacktogether(no pressure)thenroughlyanothertwofulldaysdrivingafterthattofinalisetherallyroutes.

In1998,LaurieCockerreceivedthe“JohnLGoddardTrophy”,theVintageCarClub’shighest achievementawardforhisexploitsoftimespent,andmileagecoveredinhis1906Cadillac. Now27yearson,anotherhistoricmilestonewiththeCadillacpassingthe100,000Milemark withLauriebehindthewheel.

AcommonsightontheroadsbetweenRongoteaandFeildingwithLaurieusingthevenerable oldVeteranthreeorfourtimesaweektocometotownononeerrandoranother.Notbadfor a120yearcar!

Therewere127motorcyclesregisteredfortherally -three1913modelsbeingtheoldest,throughtoa 1992BMWmodel.

Amongtheother‘AfterRallyTour’destinationswas astopatthePongaroaHotelforlunchandavisitto Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu (whichholdstheworldrecordforbeingthe longestplacenameontheplanet)nearPorangahau southofWaipukurau.

The29th NationalMotorcycleRallywasbasedattheManawatuVCCClubrooms.Saturday25th Januarywasabeautifuldaywithblueskies.130VCCentrantswereseparatedintoclasses, i.e.Veteran7,Vintage11,PostVintage18,PostWar40,Post196038,Post198013.The rallyrouteswereatparticipant’schoiceofdistancewithshort,mediumandlongavailable.

Onthelongroutethreecheckpointsandavarietyofaveragespeedsbeforethengoingat yourowncomfortableratefortherestoftheday.

TheLongroutehadusleavingourClubroomsthenpassingthroughKomako,Umitoi,Apiti, KimboltonwithlunchstopattheCheltenhamPub.TailendCharliehadpickedupaHD sidecarwhichhadlossclutchdriveontheway.AfterlunchagoodrunviaTokorangi, Halcombe,ManghsRd,MakinoRd,ColytonRdandbacktotheVCCClubrooms.Fuelrefill stopsatKimboltonandBPFeildingwerewellpatronized.Therewereavarietyofmotorcycles rangingfrom1913to1992withsomelesscommonmodelsfromDienper,ExcelsiorBigX, Cotton,Henderson,Puch,Jawa,Ambassator,LMC,Panther,Humber,Vincentandathree wheelMorganpoweredbyaVtwinMatchlessengine.AgoodrepresentationofAJS,Ariel, BMW,BSA,Matchless,Norton,Honda,HarleyDavidson,Indian,Yamaha,RoyalEnfield, Suzuki,Triumph,&Velocette.Goodcountryroadswithaminimumoftrafficwasappreciated DaytwoonSunday26th leadustotheBlackBarninHarrisonLineforthefivesection Gymkhana.

 ThereallychallengingsectionOnehadtheaimtoPlace5rolledupnewspapersinto5 tyresonyourlefthandsidewithoutstopping.

 Asecondchallengeoffivetennisballsintofivebucketswithoutstopping. (Thinkabout thecoordinationofRHontwistgripformaintainforwardmotion&LHonclutchlever plustryingtothrowpapersorballs.)

 Eventthreewasequallychallengingwithastakeandaropewithatwolitremilkbottle suspendedinthemiddleofitslengththatwasnotmeanttobedroppedontheground asyounavigatedatightcircle. Thecoordinationofreleasingtheclutchplusholding therope,thensteeringatightradius.Ididseeatleasttwocompetitorsgetmaximum points.

Thenewbrake-by-wiresystemremovesthemechanicallinkbetweenthebrakesystemand thebrakepedal

Boschhasjustcompletedtestingitsnewbrake-by-wiretechnologyonpublicroads.

TheBoschdevelopmentteamtravelledmorethan2,050miles(3,300km)acrossseveral climatezonestoreachtheArcticCircleinsixdays...inaNissanAriya.

Thetechnology,knownashydraulicbrake-by-wire,removesthemechanicallinkbetweenthe brakesystemandthebrakepedal.

Thesystemworksbyforcingthebrakepadsagainsttherotatingbrakediscwhenaremotecontrolledactuatorisengaged-thedriver'sactualbrakingrequestissenttothebrake-bywiresystemasanelectricalsignalonly.

Thetechnologysavesweightandinstallationspacebyeliminatingtherequirementfor hydraulics-thatis,thehoses,reservoirs,brakingcylindersandcontrolunits.

Boschstatesthatithasalreadyreceivedordersfromautomakers,andanticipatesthatover 5.5millionvehiclesgloballywillhavebrake-by-wireby2030.

Bosch’snewbrake-by-wiresystemworksbyforcingthebrakepadsagainsttherotatingbrake discwhenaremote-controlledactuatorisengaged.Thisisbignewsformakersofelectric vehicles,whichdependonlightweightdesigntoextendtheirrange.

Thetechnologyincorporatestwoindependenthydraulicbrakeactuators-aby-wireactuator andanESP(electronicstabilityprogram)actuator.Thisarrangementdoesawaywiththe redundancyrequiredforconventionalintegratedpowerbrakesystems,inwhichmalfunctions mayoccurinthemechanicalconnectiontothebrakepedal.

There'sanotherbigplustothistech-it'seasiertomanufactureright-handandleft-hand-drive versionsofvehicles,thankstotheflexibilityinwherethebrakeactuatorscanbeinstalled. It'salsopossibletocomeupwithnewbrakepedalconceptsthathaveconsiderablylesstravel, whichfreesuproomforinnovativeinteriordesigns.

What’smore-intheeventofamalfunction,theESPandtheby-wirebrakeactuatorcan independentlyincreasethenecessarybrakepressureatallfourwheels.Thisisbecausethey areconnectedtoseparatechannelsoftheelectricalsystem.

Bosch’snewbrake-by-wiresystemsavesweightandinstallationspacebyeliminatingthe requirementforhydraulics.

RideAparthasdiscussedthepossibilityofasystemlikethisbeingimplementedinmotorcycles. Indeed,itwouldofferafarmoresophisticatedbrakingexperienceandasmallerbrakedesign. Thatsaid,itwouldalsocreateahostofreliabilityissues,consideringmotorcyclesendurefar morethancarsdo.

Onmotorcycles,brake-by-wirewouldrequirealotofredundancyandfailsafestomakesure thatthesmallestmalfunctionwouldn'tendangertherider.

Soit’shardtoseethistechnologybeingcarriedforwardtotwo-wheelersinthenearfuture. Inthemeantime,thisshouldbeasoundadditiontothealreadyimpressivecartechthat’son offertoday.Thesystemisexpectedtogoonsaleinthelastquarterofthisyear.

NewZealandMotorCaravanAssociationIncchiefexecutiveBruceLochoresaidtheassociation hasbeenraisingwiththeGovernmentthatCOFfrequencyisinappropriatefortheuseof motorhomesforaroundfiveyears.

“It'snevermadesensebecausethesevehiclesdoafractionofthemileageofnormalvehicles, theyhaveafractionoftheseriousaccident.

“Itgotlumberedinwithallheavyvehicles,”Lochoresaid.

Hesaidmotorhomeownerstravelledaround5000kilometresannually.

“Soyouknowit'sanover-exaggerationofcomplianceforsomethingthat'sreallynot necessary.

“It'scostlyaswell…It'supto$300everysixmonthsforamotorhometogetthis.”

NewZealandFederationofMotoringClubsInchadbeencampaigningforareducedinspection frequencyforatleastfiveyearstoo,PresidentGarryJacksonsaid.

“We’rejustdelighted.

“It'sbeenaconsistentfrustrationandnaggingissue,notonlythecostofdoingiteverysix monthsbutthetimeittakestodoit.”

HesaidtheWOFsforvintagecarscostbetween$70and$100.

Jacksonsaidvintagecarsarewell-maintained.Theassociation’sownresearchshowedthat theaverageannualspendperhistoricandclassicvehiclewas$6355.

“Theamountofmoneythatpeoplespendonthesecars,rightacrossNewZealand…is probablyfourtimestheaverageofanyvehicle,”hesaid.

Hesaidinspectorsoftenweren’tfamiliarwithvintagecars,whichaddedtotheburden.

“It'sthetimeittakes,andformanyofthesecars,themileagethattheywillhavedriven betweenthepreviousWarrantoffitnessandthecurrentwarrantoffitnessmightonlybe literallyfromtheirhousetothetestingstation,butyou'vestillgottogothroughit.”

Jacksonestimatedtheaveragemoderncarwasdriven15,000-20,000kmannually,compared totheassociation’sresearchfindingthatavintagevehiclewasdriven3700kmannually.

HesaidtheFederation’svehiclesurveyreportincludedanestimatedtotaleconomicfootprint forcostsrelatingtohistoricandclassicvehiclesinNewZealandof$16.5billion.

“Ithinkthefactthatwedidthisresearchayearagowaspartofthereason,andthat coincidedwiththechangeofgovernment.”

NewZealandAutomobileAssociationIncprincipalpolicyadvisorTerryCollinsalsowelcomed themovebutwantedtheGovernmenttogofurtherwithitsinspectionreview.

CollinssaidtheGovernment’sproposaltoincludelightvehiclesinroaduserchargessystems wastherighttimetoimplementaninspectionregimebasedonavehicle'sdistancetravelled ratherthanitsage.

“It’sutilisingthechangesthattheywanttomake,andwethinkitwillbeabetteroutcome becausethosevehiclesthatneedtobeinspectedwillbeinspected...

"Thosevehiclesthatdon’tbecausethey’reaged…Orsomepeopleownsixorsevenvehicles… particularlythevintageandtheclassiccarpeople…Sothey’renottravellingineachvehiclea lotofdistance,butcollectivelythey’rehavingtogetthemre-inspectedallthetime.”

Collinssaidthepublicconsultationfortheproposedvintageandmotorhomeinspection changewasa“greatopportunity”toconsultonadistance-basedregime,too.

Collinssaiddistancewasa“verygood”indicatorofwearandteartoavehicle.

“Weseethatontyres,that’soneofthemainreasonsthattheyfail,theygettoacertainpoint aftertravelling40,000kilometres.”

Onthe16thofFebruary,afewkeenmotoristsjoinedtogetherforagreatrallytobe remembered,arallyofveteran-onlyvehicles.Thedaywasclearandtheatmospherewas cheeryatTheGroveonSundaymorning.Peoplecamewiththeircarsfromfarandwide (HawkesBay,Bulls,andRongotea)forthiseventandweallknewitwastobeagoodone.

Themorningrallybriefingwasat9:00am,whereDerekHaycocktalkedabouthowwewould becompletinga50mileruntodayaroundthelocalarea.Firststop:justroundthecorner, notfiveminutes(well,itwasforsomecars)tothehouseoftwoManawatuBranchmembers. Entrantswereentertainedwithatalkfromthetwofellowenthusiastsallabouttheirvehicles theyhad.Firstcamethestoryofrestoringa1971ChevroletCamaro,thenofacomplete restorationfortheirfirstvintagevehicle,a1929ChevroletPickupTruck,thenataleof workingona1928DodgeVictorySix,andlastlythestoryofaveryoriginalandrare1923 StutzSpecialSix,ofwhichsomeofitshistoryremainsamysterytotheowners.

Afteravisittothefirststop,entrantshoppedintheircarsandmadetheirwaytothenext stop:DennisMilne'splacetoviewhisnewlyimmaculatelyrestored1913Austin.Itwasahard journeyforsome,withTonyPrebensenbreakingdownnotamileawayfromDennis'shome, inhisbeautifullyrestored(andrecentlymaderoadworthyagain)1903Holleywithpassenger MikeStewart.Withsomeheadscratching,itwasdecidedthatitwouldbeeasiertopushthe littlecartothelunchstop,onlyafewhundredmetres(ifthat)awayandtinkerwithitthere. ParkedforlunchonDennisMilne'slawnwasa1916Chevrolet490(LenHaycock),1909 RenaultAX(PeteJohns),1906Cadillac(LaurieCocker),1903Holley(TonyPrebensen&Mike Stewart),joinedbyrallyorganiserDerekinhis1932ChevroletPickupandRogerCorlettinthe AustinFeijoaVan.Dennis'sAustinlookedsuperb,it'spaintjobandallgleamedbrightlyinthe sun.Afineexampleofacarwhichhadhadhoursofworkputintoitwhichhadpaidoffwell. WithlunchatDennisandJudy's(withsomewonderfulmuffinsmadebyJudy...greatly appreciatedbyallI'msure)theentrantswereoffagaintothefinalstop,theOhakeaMemorial Museum,foratourtakenbyitscurators.

IspenttheremainderofthedayridingintheHolley,(atotallydifferentexperiencefromriding inthe'16Chev)atrulygreatveteranandsomethingthatisnoticedbymost,alotoftootsand waveswerereceived.WebrokedowninthemiddleofNowheresville,andsomepushingwas required,butsoonenoughwewereontheroadagainandarrivedontimetoseeafantastic museumwithcuratorsthatfilledourbrainswithknowledgeofthehistoryoftheAirForce Baseandotherrelatedtopics.

Afterthatitwasbacktotheclubrooms,butfirstitwasaquickstopattheicecreamshopat Feilding,adelightfullydelicioustreatafteralongjourney.Backattheclubrooms,thelast eventwasafieldtest,atestwhichtestedthecapabilitiesofthedriver,andbythatImean me.ItookaturndrivingthelittleHolleyanditdidbyallmeanstestmyskillsofremembering whichpedaldoeswhatandhowtochangegearetc.AfterafewlapsI(think)Igotthehang ofitandtherewasslightlylesslurching,andsuddenlyitallbecamealittleclearertome.The Holleywasasuperbcartodoarallyin,likemostveterans,itshowedadifferentsideof motoringtoitsdriverandpassengers.

Therallyconcludedwithabarbecueputonbybranchhelpersanditwaswellreceived!Prize givingresultedinLenHaycockwinningfirstprizeforoverall.Wespenttheeveningtuckingin todinnerandpudding(well,Ididanyway).ThanksamillionforDerekfororganisinga fantasticeventforallofus,I'msureeverybodyfeltthesame.Theonlydownsideswerethat onlyfourcarsshoweduptotherallyandmybottomhurtforadayorsoafterridinginthe Holley!
