On The Cover: THE MIDWEEK RUN AT WAITARA And LUNCH STOP

Chairmans Chatter for Topical Torque

Hello Folks

Our Maunga Moana 60th celebration rally was a great success and its many thanks to the entrants who supported this annual event and also to the entrants and members who attended the Celebration Dinner held in the Ballroom of the Plymouth International Hotel.

The weekend started on the Friday evening with rally registration and the Treasure Hunt that took entrants to six points of interest around the city of New Plymouth where they collected information. A draw took place on the Saturday to determine the winner which was won by Ali and Brian Bolland. The road rally started on Saturday from the Hickford Park car park in Bell Block with 42 entrants and took entrants on a very scenic tour out into the eastern Taranaki countryside with beautiful sweeping views of our central North Island from a top of the ridges. These views are rarely seen if you travel along the main highways. The eighty-mile morning course was planned with speed changes to eliminate the need for manned checks. The lunch stop was held at the country Dudley Hall and this facility was very well accepted with time for a great social time over lunch. Many thanks to Kevin and Christine Fabish who arranged this venue for us. The afternoon section was shorter and finished on Egmont Road. The timed section finished here and was then collated by Peter Croot assisted by Eileen and son Robert. The precise way in which the timing that has been developed by Peter is obtained to produce a winner makes my job as rally organiser so much less stressful as I am able to completely relie on him for a job well done. Thank you, Peter, Eileen and Robert, for your time in collating and helping with the very professional rally results.

The dinner and presentation of trophy’s was held on Saturday night in the Ballroom at the Plymouth Hotel. We also were able to present two 50-year continuous memberships badges to Anthony Wilson and Doug Surgenor. Congratulations to you both for reaching this milestone in our branch.

All the results for the Maunga Moana rally are on display at the club rooms and its huge congratulations to Dave and Jocelyn Crompton who won the rally overall also winning the Merv Barras Trophy, the Findlay Trophy, the Bowman/Bognuda Trophy, the Max Fisher Trophy, and Castle Cup.

Congratulations to Nyall and Joelene Simkin who won the Colleen Moore Cup for two-person crew and were second overall. Thanks also must go to Rose Cox who made our beautiful 60th celebration cake which was enjoyed by all. Thank you to all who helped with lunches and Marshall duties. Special thanks to our Rally Secretary Rob Thomson who has a huge amount of work to do collating the entries. Good Team work all round thanks again everyone for your input.

A presentation of minatures will take place to Dave and Jocelyn Crompton at our next Noggin and Natter night as they were not at the dinner.

The Rally Raffle for the Maunga Moana was won by number 71, Vicky McKenzie, who was delighted. Thank You for your support of this raffle.

Entries are now open for the 2026 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring to be held in Nelson on the 15th to the 21st of March 2026. Please check your emails if you are registered with them or go to their website. It will be a great rally to attend and let’s hope they get a huge entry.

Check the events that our Club Captains have arranged as we have some events coming up that will be interesting, Club Night speaker on Banking Scams and the Breakfast run and End of Rego run. A working Bee at the Club rooms will be held on 16th April at 10.00am to tidy up the storeroom and general tidy of the club rooms if you would like to help the committee.

As our A.G.M will be held in May please consider helping your club run as all positions for committee will be open for nominations.

So, Keep the Passion......................Keep to the left when out driving................Day light savings has now ended.............Still good daylight for a drive ..............Cheers

EDITORS REPORT

A very pleasant afternoon was had by a group of members that travelled to Wai tara on the 26th March for our Midweek run. After a stroll to the banks of the Wa itara river where Jim Blyde told us about the early history of the railway in Waitara, we followed him to the Preservation workshop facility on Wai tara road where we spent a couple of hours inspecting the projects they are currently working on. Over a welcome cuppa we were also entertained by a film show of some of the Societies past projects and excursions. Thanks Bryan, for making this day possible.

As we go to print the End of Rego run does not have a destination, more info on this in next months mag. I think everyone who took part in last months Maunga Moana Rally enjoyed themselves on a lovely day, even those that strayed from the prescribed route! Big congrat’s to the rally organisers, who did our Branch proud, and the lunch ladies.

On a very wet and foggy Friday a couple of us managed to trundle out to the Lepperton School gala on the 4th of April. However, the organisers had allowed for the weather effects and a most enjoyable outing was had. I am sure that the event would have raised a good amount for the school funds and thanks for your support.

Hope to see some of you at the Breakfast run on Sunday, till then, that’s it from me.

A meeting of the Technical Committee for VTNZ will be held on May 11, Les Bognuda will be attending, if you have any queries of a technical nature, please contact Les asap.

THE RUMPLER

A few years ago, whilst visiting a motor Museum in Germany, Meg and I discovered an extremely unusual car called a Rumpler.

Dr Edmund Rumpler started his career in automotive design at the turn of the century and then changed to aircraft manufacture before World War I after the war the German government would not let him continue designing aircraft, so he designed his own car using many aircraft principle’s. This car stood over 7 feet tall and used aerodynamic body and windscreen features both front and rear. The driver sat on his own in the front centre with two rows of three seats behind. It was powered by a 2.6 Litre W6 motor in two three-cylinder blocks behind the rear seat and coupled to a three-speed transmission with independent axles driving the rear wheels. The cars were displayed at the 1921 Berlin motor show and were instantly rejected by the public. Some cars were used as taxis and prove to be unsuitable and the remaining unsold stocks were used by a filmmaker who wanted a scene in which a large number of cars were set on fire. According to a museum staff member I spoke to he thought about six cars survived.
