The past month has had me going to Christchurch to the National meeting to sort the last, hopefully of the constitution meetings, or near to the last. Everything went well and we finished on time which meant we could get on the road home earlier.
Dinner out at Milton was very good and enjoyed by all those who attended. Thanks to Kevin.
Best of British was another great success but unfortunately, I was unable to attend.
I have just been on the Southern BackroadAdventure and it was a great weekend. We travelled many different roads with very little dust as it had been wet not long before we travelled on them. We went from tar seal to gravel to goat tracks with some sliding as we descended some steep slopes and some of the roads were cut up with the number of cars on them as they were wet after the rain the previous night. Travelling in convoy is hard in these conditions but the Model T never faulted. Looking ahead to the Otago rally where help is needed. is easy work for Club funds so please put your name forward.
For more events check the magazine and come to what you can.
Clubrooms are open every Wednesday
From 9.30 am until 11am
Acuppa is on offer for a gold coin donation. This is a good opportunity to meet other members and help out with a few chores that might need attended to.
From your Branch Secretary
While we are getting close to winter there is still quite a touring in our cars coming up. In a couple of weeks Mark will be hosting his first South Island Club Captain’s Tour with entrants travelling from both islands to join us. While we have absolutely everything crossed for good weather it will be what it will be. Following on from the tour – some of us will be stopping in Christchurch for the South Island Easter Rally so we will have 10 days of touring, catching up with old friends and making new while enjoying our hobby.
Donations of books, memorabilia etc – if you or someone you know is looking at donating items to the branch- can you please contact me in the first instance so I can make suitable arrangements for how these are to be donated.
Draft National Club Constitution – the notice of motion re the National Club Constitution will be going out to all members for voting in a couple of months and I encourage you all to have your say and fill in the voting form. I have checked with National Office and provided that all I am doing is collecting your vote in the sealed envelope I am able to forward them to National Office as a bulk mail. I’ll set up a ballot box in the club rooms at the time.
Branch Constitution – the committee is working on updating the branch constitution so we can re-register under the new Incorporated Societies Act. More information will be coming however we will have this ready to be voted on at the June AGM.
Branch Facebook page - Did you know that along with the main club Facebook page, Otago branch also has its own page – search for Otago Vintage Car Club. I set it up a few years ago and have been doing my best to look after it however would love to add another administrator who can help with content etc. Please contact me if you are interested. Branch Activities - We all know the success of the Wednesday morning noggin and natter plus the Monthly Thursday run however - what can we offer members that are not able to attend due to work or other commitments and that may also attract new members. Some suggestions are Fish & Chip nights, Breakfast at Emerson’s (or similar). Please let me know if these appeal to you so we can organise. Have you been visiting other branches lately? Remember to let me know so I can keep a note of this for when the committee look to allocate the trophies.
VIC and Lighting Endorsement Forms - These are available via the website vcc.org.nz/vic-vehicle classification for you to download and complete before contacting one of the VIC Officers.
Vero Insurance -The VCC Vero scheme is solely for financial members and the discount we enjoy ceases when your membership is cancelled either through non-payment of subs, resignation or death. National Office can arrange for it to be transferred to a joint member, so the simplest way to continue receiving the discount is to add your spouse to your membership. This means that in the unfortunate event of the main member passing, the surviving spouse has time to decide what to do without worrying about the insurance. Please contact me if you want more details.
Newsletters from other branches -remember to check the VCC website each month to read what is happening in other branches around the country. You can also find their event entry forms there as well. The website address is https://vcc.org.nz/news-from-ourbranches/

Please contact your branch secretary for a copy of the application form as soon as possible for presentation in June
Would you like to rent our Club rooms?
To help us decide whether we should apply to vary the resource consent, the committee is wanting to gauge if there is sufficient interest from various groups to renting the club rooms. The permitted activities would need to fit under community and leisure and have no more than 50 people in attendance. The rooms available would be the main hall and kitchen plus toilets. While this is solely a fact-finding mission for now and no guarantee of usage, can you please contact me if you know of a group or groups that may be interested and fall under this category.

Redroofs Retirement Village Visit
Earlier in March our branch members were asked to bring along their Vintage Cars and bikes to display them at Redroofs Village. This was to give the residents an opportunity to revisit memories of when most of these vehicles were still used in everyday life. The afternoon was sunny and warm so a good number of residents came out and had a look at the vehicles and took the opportunity to talk to their owners. From Graeme Duthie’s TT Truck, to Tony Devereux’s Packard there were also a couple of Chevrolets, a Dodge, Model T, Hillman Minx, Austin’s, Mini, Morris 8, Sunbeam, Jaguar and a selection of motorbikes, and a few others that I didn’t manage to capture of film. A great turn out of members. We were invited in for a lovely afternoon tea and had the opportunity to sit and chat with the residents in their dinning room. An interesting comment from one of the female residents was that there was not a lot of activities available for the men who were residents there. Maybe there might be a place for man sheds at retirement villages. Thank you to everyone who came along to share some time with these residents.

Best of British 23rd February 2025
This year was the largest turn out of vehicles for a number of years with 183 cars, 3 motor bikes and one commercial vehicle participating on a reasonably sunny day raising funds for the Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust.
This year there were 2 routes for entrants – the usual longer one which took around 1 /12 – 2 hours to complete or a shorter route to encourage older vehicles to join in. From those who started from the Victoria Road car park the route went through Waldronville to Brighton, up Scroggs Hill, along Saddle Hill back to Mosgiel – through Chatsford and then down to Henley and back to finish at the Outram Rugby Clubrooms. We heard that some found the shorter route tough going so we have put forward some suggestions for next year that hopefully will make it easier to navigate. Whether it was the venue or the weather, youcould see lots of smiling faces enjoying the picnic like atmosphere on the field.
A couple of members won prizes on the day – Andrew Roxburgh won Best Motorcycle with his 1910 Triumph and David Cunningham came second in the Vintage Car Trial in his 1924 Austin 12. Since 2017 – our branch has been looking after the gate
at the finishing venue. While some things were outside of our control (like running out of forms as there were more entrants than anticipated) I think our system this year worked extremely well and we were able to process the large number very quickly. Thanks to Andrew, Neil, Trevor, Stuart N, Gavin, Darryn and Mark who volunteered their help this year – it was greatly appreciated and I hope you enjoyed your day Nicola
Motorcycle Group News
The Motorcycle team have had a busy few months with events in both the North and South Island. I have some photos – but no reports yet. Seems the owners are too busy enjoying the opportunity to go riding and making the most of the nice weather we have been having.

Friday 21st February 2025
Left the Green Island Sports Centre with no followers and headed for Gore, via the Catlins and stopping for lunch at Owaka. From there we went around the coast through Fortrose, Titiroa and Pine Bush where my ancestors carved a farm out of the bush after travelling from Dunedin with and Ox and wagon after landing in Dunedin off the sailing ship Plada. My Grandparents used to take me down to Fortrose to net Flounders.
We didn’t fall off the bottom of the Island only messed up the turn off once, to get to Edendale, where we messed up again on the new route to get to Highway 1, to travel to our accommodation just north of Mataura.
Saturday 22nd
We attended the Gore VCC Festival Rally and it was a marvellous run through country I had never seen before from the ground, although, I had covered some as a commercial traveller many times.
Sunday 23rd
Raining today, put the side curtains up, this was the only time we had to use them for the whole trip.
Next stop Riverton, contemplated overnight stay in Invercargill until the weather cleared. We carried on to Riverton where we had lunch at the Aparima Restaurant which used to be a pub where I stayed before it was burned down. At this restaurant I had the largest piece of blue cod I have ever had, done in a beautiful beer batter, it was 1st class. Weather clearing so we travelled on through Orepuki, Colac Bay, Tuatapere, Lake Monawai to Manapouri where we had to make a booking through a booking system for a motel for the night. This was booked by friends back home.
Monday 24th
Visited Te Anau. It has changed completely from what I knew 70 years ago, as have all the towns and villages. A few years ago, on a Tiger Moth safari we arrived over Cascade Creek Restaurant and the carpark was full of Chinese tourist buses, we hit the deck and flew down the Eglington Valley at naught feet to Te Anau, good fun memories.
Next stop boiled the billy at Mavora Lakes. I had landed here some years ago on the strip between the lakes, it has a delightful camping area and I take my hat off to DOC and its top-notch loos. Kelvin assisted some youths to fix their puncture with the modern glue system, then we headed off to Mossburn, no accommodation
available so on to Lumsden where we booked a cabin in the camp ground for $30 each. Only time I had to use my sleeping bag.
Tuesday 25th
Heading down the Waimea to Riversdale to the farm where I spent a lot of time in my early childhood - 1930 I was aged about 2 years old. I slept in a window box in my Grandparents bedroom. The present owners purchased the farm from my grandparent’s son (my Uncle) – (a few tears shed here).
The participants of the Model T Club run a week before, visited this farm where there is a tremendous collection of cars, and memorabilia, Kelvin had a ball. The farm is 99% changed. No draught horses or traction engines with the tin mill to thrash the oats or cut chaff.
Back up to 5 rivers where the Southland Gliding Club had permanent facilities. I made many trips down with my glider in the past. On up the road to visit Brian Hore in the Nokamai. A delightful setting, and took Brian and Nicola for a ride. Nicola would have swapped seats with Kelvin happily. Brian had owned an Auster, and a Mustang and now has a Tiger Moth and Helicopter, he holds a current licence.
After this we carried on to Athol, Garston, Kingston to Queenstown and it was an overwhelming tourist town (I won’t ellaborate). We stayed with friends Greg and Kerryann Doran at Morvan Ferry. Greg builds aircraft and has vintage cars, one 1913 METZ similar to a REO with a very unusual driving system he imported from the USA after a visit to Oskosh. He also has a number of classic speed boats.
Wednesday 26th
Arrived in Wanaka to stay with a friend, but unfortunately they had Covid, so we headed to Hawea and Makarora where we booked a cabin to stay after a quick trip to Haast and back. Kelvin arranged permission to land his Aircraft and overnight on the air strip.
To be continued next month
