Tostartwith,thepassingofCarlLutzwasabitofasurpriseinasmuchas weknewthathehadhadashortstayinhospital.Butafterhehadreturned home,Max(hisson)realisedthatherequiredcare,sointimehemovedto aretirementhome.
WiththeAPandIshowcomingupinLevin,itwasarrangedthattheday, inpart,wouldbeacelebrationoftheFordsonTractor,andtoachievethis itwasarrangedthattheywouldgetagoodrepresentationofCarl’stractor collectiontotheshowandhaveCarlthereasaguestofhonour.Notonly washetheownerofthetractors,hehadrestoredthemallexceptforthe firstFordtractorthatheboughtforfiftypounds,savedfromhispocket moneyinordertobuyamotorcar.ThefamilyshiftedfromtheUpper HuttareawhenhewasayoungboytosettleintheOtakidistrict,andhe hadbeenfarmingintheareaforabout85yearsafterthedeathofhisfather. Withhispassing,thepresentationattheAPandIShowwasstill proceededwith,andwaswellreceived.
IattendedthefuneralserviceattheOtakiRacecourse.Carlwasalong servicememberofourClub,beingduelaterthisyearforhis50year badge.HewasalsoamemberofVintageMachineryClubinLevin.His involvementintheaffairsovertheyearsintheOtakiDistrictwaslisted andisveryimpressive.
Duringtheservicehissonpointedoutthathewas98yearsand364days oldwhenhepassed,thenextdaybeinghis99thbirthday.
Thenextwasashockinnouncertainways.ItwasdiscoveredthatMike Khullhadpassedaway,sometimeovertheweekend18/19January,athis home.ItwasMike’swishthattherewouldnotbeafuneralserviceand initsplaceamemorialservice/eveningcouldbeheldattheclubrooms, whichforanumberofyearshadbeenalmostlikeMike’ssecondhome. Induecourse,thiswasarrangedanditwasapleasuretohavehisson Marty,daughterDeborahandMike’ssisterwithhusband,asguestsatthe ClubRoomsonthe5thofFebruaryforagettogetherofmembers,withthe
intentionofdisplayingtothefamilytherespect,comradeshipand friendshipthatwaspartofusallforMichael.Atthesametimewewere abletoexpressourprideofhavingamanofhistalent,ability,skilland knowledgeinourmembershipandthefactthathegavefreely,any knowledgethatmayhavebeenrequestedofhim.
Alsoofnotewasthefactthathehadjustbeenpresentedwithhis35-year membershipbadge,thathehadbeentherecipientoftheJohnL.Goddard Trophy,thetopNZVCCawardforservice,andinbetweentimes,someof hisvehicleshadappearedonthecoveroftheNZVCCBeadedWheels afterhavingbeenrestoredbyhim.
OnSaturday8thFeb,wehadaworkingbee,agoodonetosaytheleast,to preparetheclubroomsforaneventonSundaythe9th,whichwasthe officialnamingoftheLounge.
Amongthe80personsattending,wehadclubmemberspastandpresent, alongwiththeinvitedfamily,relativesandfriendsofthemanofthe moment,PeterNightingale,allpresenttowitnessthepresentationofthe framedprintedsign,namingthelounge“TheShonaandPeterNightingale Lounge”inhonourofthededication,commitmentandservicetoourClub bybothShonaandPeteroveraperiodofsome50oddyears.
TheactivitywaswellmanagedbyourPatron,TomHayesandalongwith anumberofspeechesfromguestsincludingPeter’sdaughter,brotherand thefirstChairmanoftheClubfrom1977,theafternooncouldonlybe describedasatotalsuccessandwasenjoyedbyallthosepresent. Imustmentiontheeffortofthesub-committeeledbyTomandincluding JackieJob,DaphneWilliams,WynBishopandRichardSaltwhich resultedinaverysuccessfulday.
Wellwhatamonth.Icanonlysaythatitisattimessuchasthese,Ifeelit anhonourtobeChairmanofthisClub.

TheDecembergaragevisittoMichael’splacewasanotherhugesuccess, andIwasdisappointedthatIcouldnotattend.Thankyou,Michael,for openingupyourgaragecontainingaVintageHarleyDavidsonmotor cyclecollectionandothertreasures.
WeparticipatedintwoChristmasParadesandoneAP&Ishowduring December.Iwouldliketothankpersonallythosememberswhoturnedup totheseparadeeventsandshowcasedourclub.Thecarsvariedin categoriesrepresentingtheclub,andIwasblownawaywhen16cars turnedupfortheparadeattheAP&Ishow.IthinkIstilloweeveryone thatcamealongafreecoffee.Inalast-minutedesperateemailtomembers, Ididmentionafreecoffeetothosewhoattendedtogetmembersalong.I don’tknowhowIwilleverbeabletorepaythisoffer.
RestorationoftheYearhasbeenpostponeduntiltheclubnightinMarch.I haveentryforms,sopleaseletmeknowifyouareinterestedinentering theevent.
BythetimeyoureceivetheFebruaryeditionoftheSparkMagazine,our firstgarageraidfortheyearwouldhavetakenplace.Basilhaslinedup moregaragevisitsforusonthesecondWednesdayeachmonth throughouttheyear.

Ididnotcompletethethirdraceoftheweekendwhenitwas"redflagged" duetooneofthecarscatchingfire;andmycargottoohotduetothered flagstoppageprocedure.
Infact,threeofusdidnotmaketherestart.Justcircumstances.Themain thingwasthatthedriverofthecarthatcaughtfirewasOK.
IntwoearlierdryracesIcame3rdand2nd,aftermakingpoorstartsdueto toomuchwheelspin.
Thefourthraceoftheweekendwasdamp(lightrain)thenwetforthelast twolaps.Istartedfromthebackofthegrid;duetonotrestartingafterthe redflagrace.

My1937FordModelYwaslastontheroadin2004andtheregistrationhad lapsed.
ItookthecardowntothetestingstationtogetaWoFandthencompliance checked.
TheWoFwasrejectedbecausethetyreswereperishedwhichwasfairenough, butthenitwasdiscoveredtherewasnosplitpininacastellatednutontheL.R. backingplate.
Correct,there'saspringwasherunderneath,butnope!ALLcastellatednuts needtohavesplitpinsinserted,sothespringwasherwasremovedandasplit pininstalled.
Next,theboltonthesideofthechassisholdingthesteeringboxwasdeemedto belooseandneededtobetightened.ThisnecessitatedremovaloftheGirling double-actingshockabsorber thatcoveredupaccesstothe sidebolt,whichwhen checked,wasfoundtobetight enough.
Ireplacedthetyresandtook thecarbackforarecheck.
Thenitwasdiscoveredthe frontlugonthesteeringbox hadbrokenoff,sothesteering boxhadtocomeoutandanew luggetweldedon.Ialsomade upaplatetosandwichthe steeringboxintoplaceagainst theundersideofthechassisas anaddedstrengthening measure.
Afterallthisthecarpassedinspection,butthensomethingwaswrongwiththe newtyres!ThespeedmarkingsonthesidesofthetyresontheLHSdidn'tmatch upwiththetyresontheRHSsothefrontandreartyresononesideneededto beexchangedwitheachother.
Oncethatexchangewasperformed,aWoFandRegowereobtained. Thetotalcostwasjustover$625,newtyresexcluded. NowtheModelYisbackontheroadagain,after21yearsresting.

IhavebeenworkingonCarl’strucksandtractorsforaroundthirtyyears. Hewasafrequentvisitortomyworkshop,wasusuallyinahurryashe hadworktodo,butoccasionallyhewouldstopforacuppaandalways hadajoketotell.Wheneverwewereworkingonrestorationsinhisshed wealwayshadteaandtwoBelgianbiscuits,andsortedoutthecountry whiledoingso.
Carltookoverrunningthefarmwhileonlytwentyyearsold,afterhis father’searlydeath.HeattendedeveryA&PshowinLevinfrom1936to 2024,wasafounderoftheVintageMachineryClub,amemberofRotary andwasinvolvedinmanycommunitygroups,wasontheboardofseveral dairycompaniesandwasasupporteroftheOtakiRiverrestorationproject.
Carlhastwentyseventractorsinhismuseum,andmanyothersworking onthefarm;allFordsons.HehasbeenagreatfriendandIwillmisshis cheerfulnature.

FeelfreetocomeforjusttheKilnsorjustforlunchifyoudon'twant todoboth.TheKilnsdon'tnormallyopenduringtheweek,butthe Trust'svolunteersareopeningspeciallyandlayingonmorningteajust forus.
Youdon'tneedtobeinterestedinpotterytobefascinatedbythe BeehiveKilns.I'mnot,butIlovethestoryofhowayoungMirekSmisek lefthisnativeCzechoslovakiain1948toescapefromtheRussian occupationandforcedlabourcampswhichwerethelegacyofWorldWar2. AfterstudyingceramicsinSydney,hecametoAucklandtoworkforCrown LynnPotteriesandmadeNewZealandhomefortherestofhislife.
Hesoonbecameaself-employedpotterandgainedworld-widerecognition forhissalt-glazefiringtechnique,operatingfromtheTeHorosite since1970.HereceivedanOBEfromtheQueenin1990,andoneofhis lastjobswasacommissionfromSirPeterJacksontomake700goblets, bowls,bottlesandjugsfortheLordoftheRingstrilogy.
Inafinaltwisttothestory,thekilnsfaceddemolition5yearsago whentheOtakiExpresswaywasbuilt,andtheyhadtobemoved,brickby brick,20metrestotheEasttotheirpresentposition.The100year-old TeHororailwaystationwasalsointhepathoftheexpresswayandwas alsoshiftednexttothekilnswhereitnowprovidesaccommodationfor thevisiting"potterinresidence".Comealongonthe26thtolearn MirekSmisek'sfullstory.
