Chairmans report April 2025
Firstly, a message for all members who would like to order a commemorative plaque from our 50th Anniversary East Coast Rally. These were very popular and due to demand; we are going to have another batch made. The plaques cost $15 and if you would like to order one, please contact Barry Spry.
The projects in the garage are continuing and there has been plenty of fun happening out on the roads. As I write this report, I am looking forward to heading away to the Beach Hop festival and I hope to catch up with plenty of EBOP VCC members while we are there.
As a club we have some important matters to deal with in the not-too-distant future including the registration of our club under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. At our next AGM we must firstly agree to register under the new act and consider the requirement for any changes to the club’s constitution. As many branch members will be aware, our existing constitution is unlikely to meet the requirements of the new Incorporated Societies Act so changes will almost certainly be necessary. I encourage our branch members to attend or regular monthly club meetings as we work to address this matter.
A survey link has been sent out by our club secretary requesting our support on a proposed law change concerning WOF requirements for our vehicles. This opportunity has come about through a lot of hard work by the VCC together with the FoMC and has resulted in the Government reviewing the WOF legislation in New Zealand. This is a great opportunity to show that our 8000 plus members support this work and want to see the changes being considered become law. The NZVCC will be preparing a larger submission, but we have all been asked to simply click on the link in the email and individually make our voices heard in support of this.
There are plenty of events on the club calendar and I would like to thank our members who have taken the time to organise runs and activities for all of us to enjoy. Our club is all about getting out on the road and enjoying our vehicles and the company of fellow club members. Having plenty of activities to look forward to ensures our club, it’s members and our vehicles remain active.
Happy and safe motoring
Bevan

Taupo Country Roads Rally Saturday 15th March Bright and early Saturday morning Gail and I with the two pups in the back of the Capri headed off to Taupo for the Country Roads Rally. Well it was bright for 6am, the moon was huge and it was almost like daylight, especially after the blood red moon the night before. It was a good trip to Rotorua then the fog came down, we could hardly see a thing, slow going. Then some idiot coming the other way appeared out of the fog with no lights on, we didn’t see him until he was right beside us, then he disappeared into the fog again.
We got to Taupo about 7.45am, let the pups out for a run!! then headed off to the Clubrooms to find we had 6 of our Branch cars entered, John and Jacqui, Harry and Gay, Steve and Joy, Walter and Sue, Barry and Tessa, and us.
After the briefing we set off at 2 minute intervals, our 2 minutes before our start seemed like 2 hours as we listened to the Rally Starter telling us he was a Fiat man, “far superior to Capri’s” in his opinion, but we started the rally on friendly terms (lucky I didn’t value his opinion).
We were off looking for silent checks (we are never good at this) on some country roads somewhere, with some cryptic questions to answer and more silent checks. Soon we were on State Highway 5 headed Rotorua way, off to a wetland reserve to answer a question about a dog, then in a round about way we found ourselves at Waiotapu Loop Road to have morning tea at the Tourist Centre Cafe. A great place to park up and let the Tourists view our cars and the Cafe had a special offer of $12 for a coffee and a scone or muffin.
Then we were off on the second part of the Rally, which was written instruction with 2 pages of photos that were to be identified as we passed them. Wondering how this would work we drove up the Waiotapu Loop Road towards State Highway 5 where we found one photo. On to State Highway 5 then turn right Murupara – Waikaremoana, then a loop up toward Rerewhaakaitu and back on to Murupara Road, where we found more of the photos, this is fun. Back up past Lake Okaro and back onto State Highway 5 heading toward Taupo. Turn into Campbell Road and then into Birch Road, found more pictures, into Settlers Road and onto Reporoa heading to the Woolshed Pub for lunch.
In our excitement to get to the pub, we missed the last 2 pictures (the easiest ones to find), well we were looking forward to lunch and a beer.
We had a nice pub lunch and an interesting chat with others about the run, we all agreed that it was a great rally with the photos we had to identify made it so different and enjoyable from any other rally we have attended.
As the afternoon run was not competitive and we were closer to home and weren’t staying in Taupo and as we weren’t likely to get any placings we decided to come home from the pub. But it turns out we were gifted 4th place of P60 the largest group. Sorry Taupo we didn’t come back to receive our prize.
Steve and Joy won their P80 group with Jacqui and John 2nd. This was a great Rally, well thought out and very enjoyable. Thanks Taupo, we must do it again. Les. .7.
