CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY BRANCH ofthe VINTAGE CAR CLUB of NZ (Inc) Lamb Country

Branch Email: centralhawkesbay@vcc.org.nz

The Type 57 Ventoux was purchased from Paris in 2015 by founder and owner of Classics Museum in Hamilton, Tom Andrews. Having always wanted to own a Bugatti, Andrews decided to build a recreation of Jean Bugatti’s 1936 Type 57S Coupe ‘La Voiture Noire’, No. 57453. Some seven years after he began his mission to rebuild a classic barn-find Bugatti, Hamilton unveiled the fully realised creation to the public for the first time in Napier. The meticulously recreated 1937 Bugatti Atlantic Type 57 was unveiled at Napier’s 2025 Art Deco Festival. Where it took part in the vintage car parade amongst numerous other rare classic cars.

Originally purchased in a rough state for $460,000 in 2015 as one of 60 cars discovered in a single barn find, the meticulous rebuild included acquiring one of just three wood frames in the world, produced in Germany. The car’s swooping aluminium body was created by Creative Metals in Pukekohe, with numerous other local businesses playing a role in the restoration.

The value of the recreation can only be speculated. Only three other restored 1937 Bugatti Atlantic Type 57s exist globally. One is owned by illustrious designer Ralph Lauren, who bought it for US$40m. In 2019, Andrews noted that a Type 57 Ventoux in a “decent state” had recently sold for US$1.5m. In a post shared online, Andrews paid tribute to his wife, Diane, fabricator Simon Tippins, mechanical engineer Gordon White, and project manager Greg McDell. Purchasing the Type 57 Ventoux from the Roger Baillon Collection in Paris in 2015 was a big moment in my life. I absolutely loved the car and all of its rich, fascinating history. After I laid eyes on the Ventoux back here in New Zealand, however, I was inspired to add another Bugatti to the collection at the Classics Museum. Jean Bugatti’s 1936 Type 57S Atlantic Coupe that went missing in 1939. “No one had ever built this specific car before, so I began to formulate a plan as to how this could be achieved. My initial focus was to assemble a talented, motivated, and close-knit team around me that could pull this build off.”

CHB Branch of the VCC—Chairman’s Report—March 2025

Summer is over so cruising in our convertibles with the roof down is just about a thing of the past.

The Elsthorpe Domain Gymkhana was held on Sunday 9th February. Many thanks go to Golly and Seton for organising this event, they have done this for a number of year now, an enormous amount of work goes into organising an event like this. We encourage more to attend this fun day next year.

The Art Deco CHB Market was overloaded by the 2 events on at the same time put on by the same person which spread the visitors out thinly but those who attended and had stalls, seem to be quite pleased with the day over all.

Having the official Art Deco weekend on in Hawke’s Bay had a lot of our CHB cars up in Napier, but we did have some cars on display here in Waipukurau looking shinny, bright and fabulous. Thank you for attending Our very own Michael and Vicky Harding took out the best dressed for the day, Congratulations they looked fantastic.

The branch dinner meeting was well attended; Stand in “show n tell” guest was Brian Connor with a guess what these items are???. This was very well received and we all participated, Thank you Brian.

Also a very big thank you from Lorry Cribs for those that purchased the Art Deco cups and tea towels that were on display club night.

Laurie and Gloria are looking for support for the Dannevirke Club promotion day coming up soon, Saturday 15th March. You can contact either me or Laurie to let us know if you can help. Thank you.

Public

consultation begins on

extensions to WOF and COF inspections of Vintage Cars, Vintage Motorcycles, and privately owned Motorhomes

Public consultation opened on February 24th 2025. The Government’s proposal is to reduce compliance requirements for owners of Vintage Cars, Vintage Motorcycles, and privately owned Motorhomes. Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the Government is looking to reduce unnecessarily onerous compliance rules on such vehicles.

In total there are around 4.4 million light vehicles in New Zealand, with around 128,000 of them being vintage, and about 39,000 private motorhomes, he said. ”At present the owners of these vehicles must spend time and money on Warrant of Fitness or Certificate of Fitness inspections every six months. “That’s despite motorhomes and vintage light vehicles travelling much less per year compared to most modern cars, and evidence showing that faults in these vehicles are half as likely to have contributed to serious crashes involving these vehicles. “That’s true even when factoring in the smaller numbers of motorhomes and vintage vehicles on our roads. ”The public consultation, being run by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, proposes to: reduce WOF check frequency for vehicles aged 40 years-plus from every six months to every year; and reduce COF check frequency for privately owned heavy motorhome vehicles from every six months to every year. Bishop said evidence shows that initial pass rates for vintage vehicles are higher compared to all vehicles aged under 40 years old. “In fact, light vehicle WOF pass rates [of initial inspection only] actually improve as vehicles age from 40 years old showing that, with proper care, some things really do get better with age. “That’s why we’re consulting on easing the overly onerous compliance requirements on these types of vehicles, so that owners of vintage cars and private motorhomes can spend less time waiting in line at the VTNZ, and more time tinkering happily in the garage or cruising the open road. “The Minister said extending the time between WOF and COF inspections “is a sensible approach to ensuring vehicles are safe while not going overboard on compliance”.

Public consultation on the proposed changes began on Monday 24th February Visit nzta.govt.nz to share your feedback

The last day for feedback is on Friday 4th April 2025

Austin Motor Company brought back to life, with all-electric Austin Arrow

Previously defunct British motor manufacturer, Austin Motor Company, has been brought back to life with a fully-electric take on the Austin Seven, called the Arrow. The electric transition started when now Austin Motor Company owner, John Stubbs, was able to purchase the rights to the Austin name and trademark for just £170 ($211).

The Arrow is the first car to be born from the brand’s rebirth, a two-seater roadster inspired by the original Austin Seven from 1922, but this time, with an all-electric drivetrain in place of the original’s internal combustion engine. While the Austin Arrow is still a relatively niche product, it comes into an ever-growing market of classic electric cars – from like-new restomods from firms such as Everrati, simple conversions, and all-new vehicles inspired by original designs, such as the Austin Arrow Performance-wise, the Austin Arow uses a 15kW, rear driven electric motor to propel it to a top speed of 60mph – which takes just eight seconds, thanks to the Arrow’s light footprint of 605kg. A 20kW battery pack offers a range of up to 11miles. With a starting price of £31,000, Austin Motor Company aims to limit production to 120 cars this year, in a nod to the number of the original Austin Sevens produced in its first year of production – though the firm does plan to scale up production further down the line. Austin currently employs ten staff at its Essex facility, but does plan to extend production to India to create more powerful editions of the Arrow and to start developing other models for the brand.

FIRST CAR OUT OF THE RELAUNCH

“It felt like the eyes of Sir Herbert Austin were watching me. Almost as if I needed his approval to build a heritage Austin. Austin Sevens were simple cars. They were lightweight and easy to modify – so they were used for everything – from family cars to racers. So I wanted to try and inject the same feeling and emotion into the new car – to capture the simplicity and spirit of early motoring, but with a modern electric twist. Our first car, The Arrow, is half a kilo lighter than the original 1922 car. We build and manufacture everything from scratch here in Essex.”

Eight cars attended the gymkhana organised by Ian Gollan and Seton Thomsen held at the Elsthorpe Domain in early February. Once again it was a hot sunny day, and we enjoyed the shade from the huge old trees.

Four different challenges were presented for people to master. First one being (The Golf Ball Challenge) where the driver and the navigator were both given 3 golf balls each to put on top of road cones as we drove around. Second challenge was called (Stop) where the driver was asked to stop at 55 meters and then 65 meters. Third Challenge was (Bulls Eye) where both driver and navigator were given 4 small bean bags each to throw nearest to a marker as we drove around in a circle.

The fun was interrupted by lunch and then the fourth Challenge was held, this being called (A Drive Round The Farm) where the driver was blind folded and the navigator had to direct him through the gates aka road cones.

Prize giving 1. Golf Ball Scarlet and Rod McKenzie in their Holden Commodore.

2. Stop Barry Smales in his 105E Ford Anglia.

3. Bulls Eye—Chris and Bernard Murphy in their Triumph Spitfire.
