CHAIRMAN’S REPORT FEBRUARY 2018 A warm welcome to 2018 and hope that all members had a great Christmas and New Year! January starts off with a club run up to Rotorua for the Rotorua Lakefront Show & Shine. We usually get a good turnout of our members and hopefully this year the weather is fine unlike last year where although warm we had wind & rain. If you are coming then meet at the clubrooms at 8.45AM on Sunday 21 st departing at 9.00AM to travel in convoy up State Highway 5 through to Rotorua. We will join those coming as the group passes our road. Bring your lunch and sun umbrellas or if you wish there is the Sunday market close by as well as all the restaurants in the main street – all within a few moments walking distance. The show officially starts at 10.00AM and finishes a little earlier at 2.00PM as those attending in previous years wanted a shorter programme. On February 3rd we have our annual “Open Day” at the clubrooms. This is an opportunity for the club to show Taupo locals where we are as well as the excellent facilities the club has and meet our members. If you can please bring your car (or cars) and invite anyone else that you know who has a vehicle (car – truck – motorcycle etc) of interest that can complement the display we will have on the day. We usually get 2 or 3 (sometimes more) new members signing up from the Open Day. The other two events coming up is the summer BBQ at the clubrooms to formally kick the year off – remember members bring salads & desserts and the club supplies the meat. Also the Blind Run – we will need a few cars for this to ensure everyone gets a ride. A new year seems to bring a flurry of new vehicles or in some cases replacement vehicles within the club. Rumour has it that a very well known MGB roadster is in the market an about to be replaced by something even more exotic – watch this space! Also don’t forget that the Lake Taupo Rally is all set for the 9th – 10th & 11th March. This year’s rally is going to be even more fun with what has been promised a ‘more relaxed format’. So don’t delay get your entry form sorted and plan for a great weekend.

Taupo Vintage Car Club Open Day. Saturday 3rd February 10.00am to 1.00pm. At the Clubrooms, Hickling Park. This is a day we can show our cars off to the public and we usually pick up some new members. Bring your car or cars along to show off and enjoy a BBQ sausage while talking cars and things. See you there and for more information contact a committee member.

Club Night BBQ and Dinner at the Clubrooms. Wednesday 8th February, 6.00pm onwards, Dinner around 7.00pm. The Club will provide the BBQ,sausages and Meat patties. You may wish to bring a drink, soda water or something stronger. Those attending please bring a Salad or dessert. Be prepared, we will do a ring around to get numbers and what you intend bringing.

Annual Picnic Run for the Taupo Blind Group. Sunday 18th February 1.30pm at the Clubrooms. This is to provide a run for local sight impaired people and the run around town is 45-60 minutes. The Blind group brings afternoon tea. Please support this run as we If you can assist please let a Committee member know on BBQ night. will need your car to assist in transporting these people around.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT FEBRUARY 2018 Welcome to 2018 and we hope you all had a great Christmas with family and friends. We had a great welcome into 2018 on New Years Eve in Taupo with Fireworks display and great weather, but what happened a couple days later upset a lot of home owners and holiday makers with a severe storm lashing the North Island including Taupo. Taupo was probably one of the lucky towns that came through with little damage. What’s 2018 going to bring? Lots of great Club events. See attached notices, for Open Day, Club Night BBQ and Club Run/Blind Run While I have pen in hand I would like to clear up any matters that relate to fundraising for Megan Hodgkinson,( Jan Trims granddaughter). As many of you may, or may not be aware, the Taupo VCC is NOT fundraising for Megan but assisting the best way we can. As always, Taupo VCC was involved in the 2017 Taupo Christmas parade. This time we allowed one of our cars to carry signage supporting Megan, while family and Club Members carried collection buckets hoping for public donations. The Club has also given the lunch contract to the Hodgkinson family to provide Rally Lunches to all Rally entries for our upcoming Rally in March. Again, please support it. If you feel like you can assist in any way please contact Jan Trim directly. Jan (Megan’s Grandmother) has taken on this huge task to raise in excess of $120.000 to get Megan to the USA for surgery to enable her to walk again unaided to try to avoid spending the rest of her life in a wheelchair. What do we belong to a Club for? For Pam and I, it is for meeting new people and doing things with others with common interests. As we are Members of the Hawkes Bay Model A Club we travelled to Napier on the 7th January to visit the Gannet Colony and Mokopeka Power Station. We were booked in to see the Gannets during our Model A Easter National Rally in 2017 but due to bad storms just before Easter this visit was cancelled, until now. The Club entered the Cape Farm gates at Clifton and travelled the 17km to Cape Kidnappers along the farm track and then a short sharp climb up to viewing and 17km back out again taking approx 1hr each way. Mokopeka Power Station was constructed in the early 1900 on a farm in the Mokopeka Valley. This Power Station is the oldest working Power Station in the world and its in NZ. We got to see it working generating power. As members of this Club we got to see something special and still in working order. Eric and I decided we see how well our bulk email service works. Thanks everyone for supporting our Club Captain’s Morning Tea. You must have read your inbox. It was great to see so many old faces and new ones also. Let’s hope I managed to say hi to everyone. The Club intends sending out more bulk email reminder to Members of upcoming events. With changes to email adresses(thanks to vodafone) over the last year, please ensure that we have the correct email address for you. Also,If you have trouble reading our Newsletter on your computer, please tell us and we just might be able to help. Cheers for 2018.

Let us know if there are members out there who are unwell, feeling a bit blue or would like a visit wherever they may be. Even if you would like to participate in a club event and are no longer able to drive your car please let a committee member know and they will make sure members are taken care of. Let us provide some sunshine in your lives!! Apparently, the Club used to do something along these lines but at some stage in the distant past(long before I was involved. Ed)somehow it got forgotten about. This reintroduction will however only succeed if you make us aware. We are not mind readers.

Terrys Tyres Lake Taupo Rally 9 /10th March 2018 Club Rally Report. The Rally Committee has now successfully brought Terrys Tyres on board as our major sponsor for the 2018 Rally and we are all looking forward to working with Terrys Tyres. The Rally this year will consist of a competitive morning run, out to the country for our morning tea stop and then returning to the Clubrooms for lunch. The lunch this year will be provided by the Hodgkinson family, going towards the fundraising the family is doing to support Megan their daughter which requires a operation in USA later in the year. At only $15.00 per head I am sure that you will get a great lunch, so PLEASE tick the lunch box when entering. After lunch we also have plans for a run, but it will not be competitive. Evening meal and prize giving will be held at the Golf Club. Club Members PLEASE support this Rally as it is intended to be a fun Rally with good driving roads suitable for all cars. Also if you would like to do the rally, but your car is in the repair shop, please let us know and we may be able to help. Dinner and Prize giving is open to all Club Members but we need you to fill out an Entry Form for Dinner only even if you are not going on the Rally itself. Fill out your entry form now, Eric is waiting at the Post Box. Tony Mannington, Club Captain. th

DO NOT wash your hair in the shower!! It’s so good to finally get a health warning that is useful!!! IT INVOLVES THE SHAMPOO WHEN IT RUNS DOWN YOUR BODY WHEN YOU SHOWER WITH IT. WARNING TO US ALL!!! Shampoo Warning! I don’t know WHY I didn’t figure this out sooner! I use shampoo in the shower! When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label this warning; “FOR EXTRA BODY AND VOLUME.” No wonder I have been gaining weight! Well! I got rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with Dawn Dishwashing Soap. Its label reads, “DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE.” Problem solved! If I don’t answer the phone, I’ll be in the shower! 13

The following pages list some activities that may be of interest to members. They are not Club Events, but they may interest you. Ruahine Ramble – 3 March 2018 Bruce & Trish Jefferies have asked that we include details of this run organised by the Manawatu VCC Club. Sounds like a great outing,so if interested please email for an entry form. You may wish to contact Bruce or Trish for more details. Unfortunately Tony and I won’t be able to make it, as we have other plans. Below is a copy of what was in their last magazine.

Planning for the 2018 Ramble is well under way with the route now set and the first check having been completed. With the Saddle road having busied up through being the main route to the Wairarapa the decision has been taken to avoid crossing the ranges. Also considered was the loss of the gorge as a “flat road” alternative (which was used by some of the entrants in the 2017 Ramble to Ormondville) and which could preclude some lower powered vechicles from participating in the Ramble. The 2018 Ramble will therefore not follow the usual terrain and as a result the morning route is an easy one of approx. 75 miles (120 km) through rolling countryside which will suit vehicles of all VCC Vehicle Classifications. The afternoon section is also on good roads and is quite short – ending at a Café which will be the end of the Ramble. The Ramble will follow the theme of recent years and will be a relaxing non-competitive outing. There are no unsealed roads: just approx. 1¾ miles (3 kms) of State Highway in the morning and a similar length in the afternoon. So keep 3rd March free, and the Entry Form and other information will be in the February Tourer. If for any reason you need a copy of the entry form before it is published please email me requesting a copy. (”

Club shirts were out in force at Rotorua Show and Shine on the 21st January. Approximately 15 cars travelled over in convoy from our Clubrooms, and others arrived at various times. Eat Street was well patronised at lunchtime. Below a few photos courtesy of Terri Foley and Pam Mannington
