Chairman’s Report Several members have been flying the flag for the Club in the last few weeks. Four members took residents from Peacehaven for a drive around the city and environs, and six members assisted with delivering daffodils to businesses in town for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day. The National Daffodil Day Rally was a success with $500 being raised for the local Cancer Society. The Club’s annual auction was a great success with over $1000 being raised. Thanks to Auctioneer Simon and all those who donated goods or purchased things they may or may not have wanted. Kevin Clarkson is unable to make the presentation of the 50 year badges next month. His place will be taken by National Secretary/Treasurer Michael Lavender. You may have noticed that the hedge has been removed between the carpark and the neighbouring property. The next step is to clear, level and gravel the area to extend the carpark. This was one of the main reasons for purchasing this property. It is hoped this work will be completed before the Easter Rally. The Easter Rally Committee has been doing sterling work, with entry forms being handed out on Saturday evening.

From the Editor. Last month I went to Newfield Autos to take a photo of Dave McKenzie presenting tyres for the Darracq to Gerry Pethick. The photo was in last month’s Rumour. Arthur Warren had organised this and after we had finished taking photos he invited us to go and look at the tram he is helping restore. The tram is at a Richardson owned property in Otepuni Ave. Gerry, Dave and I went and had a look at the tram and the progress that has been made. While there we were invited to look at some old trucks that were also stored on this site. The first shed we checked out had an old Foden with L.E. Elms & Sons Ltd, Hastings on the door. Both the colours and the company were familiar to me as I was brought up in Hastings. I did a bit of research and found that L.E. Elms & Sons Ltd was registered in 1959 with William Arthur (Bill) Elms and John Charters Elms as shareholders and directors, but the total shareholding is now with William Arthur Elms.

These were both sons of Leslie Ernest Elms who had been in the transport business for many years and it is likely that this company was actually a re-registration of a previous company. This transport company was based just around the corner from Frimley School which I started at in 1958. I can remember seeing the trucks around the area. More significant was that Bill Elms’ daughter Margaret was in my class right from the time I started school and I think her older brother was in the same class as my brother. This certainly brought back a few memories, although I can’t remember Margaret being in my class after we left Frimley School to go to intermediate school. She would have been at the same school but must have been in another class. My research also brought up an current address for her (still as Margaret Elms) and it looks like it is the house that was attached to the depot back in the ‘50s. The Foden that the Richardsons have apparently doesn’t have a motor which is a little unfortunate as Fodens used an interesting 2 stroke diesel of their own design and these are probably pretty hard to find these days.

Round the Takis Run

Saturday 2nd September dawned chilly with a frost as we gathered in Preston Street for the annual jaunt to Te Anau for the night. Of the 20 bikes leaving Preston St 6 were only going on the day trip the rest were staying overnight. We left at 10am heading for Colac Bay for morning tea where we were greeted by a warm fire and the pub cat sitting on his bar stool drinking water from a glass placed on the bar – apparently this is its favourite trick – makes quite a sight. Here we were joined by the crew coming down from Te Anau, also bikes from Mossburn via Riverton. At 11:30 after a warm cuppa we headed off again towards Tuatapere where the 3 oldest bikes on the run caught up with us. Here we were joined by 13 bikes from Queenstown which swelled our numbers to 80 plus. It was good to see Errol Brown back on the bike after a stint in hospital. After the lunch stop in Tuatapere with the weather sunny and a cold breeze we headed towards Manapouri, but at least the roads were dry. After a stop at Manapouri we headed to the final stop, Te Anau arriving at 5pm. After booking into our accommodation, changing clothes we headed to the Ranch House for a lovely roast meal for tea, after which we had prize giving and then tried to put the world to rights. Sunday morning after breakfast at the Distinction, we hit the road for home leaving at around 10am. It was nice day in Te Anau but got quite chilly once over the Gorge Hill. A cup of coffee at Bracken Hill, Mossburn warmed us up. Here we were greeted by Wayne Nicoll’s sister-inlaw, Marie who makes a great cuppa. Once again we hit the road heading back down the Wreys Bush Road arriving back in Invercargill around 1:30. All in all the run went very well with only a couple of hiccups, firstly Wayne Calderwood went out to the garage on Saturday morn and unfortu-

nately found his rear rim sitting on the ground – quite deflated he was, anyway after trying a couple of valves finally got the rim to come off the ground and away he went without another hitch. Unfortunately the other break down wasn’t so fortunate, Simon Apsinall on his Norton came to a sudden stop when his motor blew up - not a good sound. The run took us over 350 kms of great riding and comradeship, personally ticking off the 33rd run. It was great to see those local members riding VCC eligible bikes. A big thank you to Kevin McDonald, Rogers Yahama, for supplying the back vehicle. The Colac Bay Hotel, Tuatapere Hotel and The Ranch House for their donations. Also a big thanks to Liz Thumper for organising the Te Anau end of the trip. Russell’s Ramblings Autospectacular. Twelve members on a boys day out travelled by rental van to Dunedin for this event, collecting Greg Elder in Gore. Brian “Fangio” Dunick drove keeping us alert with driving frequently on the Rumble strip. The Edgar centre was packed with cars from various clubs with their dedicated makes on display. Ferraris, Jaguars and Fords were in abundance. My visitors choice of a vehicle was the Fiat 510 six cylinder. The 1922 auto is from the Olveston Historic homestead where it is garaged. On the Otago Vintage Car club display was a 1902 Clement Farroad motorcycle. I’m certain with light pedal assistance it would keep you fit travelling around hilly Dunedin. There were numerous stalls selling vintage material with a predominance of books and model cars. Wayne Nicolls’ grandson was happy with the seven dollar pocket watch he bought, and, no it did not have a bamboo mainspring. Once again a popular event to see, thanks go to Colin Fleet and Brian Dunick for the help. Olly Olsen has his Chrysler 77 together having fitted a head with some water gallery adjustments. Dave Calvert has sold his Hillman Hunter station wagon and is working on his 1930 Model A Roadster. He has had hood bows made and motor work done. It will be a good practical vintage car when finished. Graeme Russell is fettling the 1928 Triumph model N Delux that Tony Warren was working on. He aims to have it ready for the Arrowtown Rally. With the motorcycle collections of the Motorcycle Mecca, E. Hayes, and local private owners there are the best part of six hundred veteran, vintage and classic motorbikes in Southland. Except for cam grinding and magneto rewinding, all the other restoration work can be done locally. This includes plating, wheel building, powder coating, tank painting and engine rebuilding. Also many new members in the local Club are restoring and riding bikes. One can understand why Invercargill is being called “The Motorcycle City”. The light at the end of the tunnel is the train.

From National Office We have received two emails from National Office regarding deposits into their bank account with no identification. 1. The date the money was inputted in to our account was 6 September 2017. Reference – all I have is the word Transfer I do not want to give the amount as that is the only way I will be able to determine that it is correctly the person who contacts me. However it is over $100. 2. We have another member who has deposited money in to our account on 8 September and put a 17 digit number and declared the payment is Vintage Car Subs but nothing else. I have no idea who it is for. Our bank THINK it may be from a BNZ Bank. If you could have made either of these deposits please contact Julie at National Office. Rumour
