BEHIND THE HEDGE

Notes from the Library Barnes

by Barry

Carla and I have been away enjoying the winterless(?) north for a couple of weeks and hence missed AGM. I understand there was not any heated competition for the coveted position of Librarian and I am still in the role! On my return I found a few items had arrived in the Library including a book unusually entitled “A Boot Full of Right Arms”, donated by Clive Merry. It’s the story of the 1974 London Sahara Munich world cup rally by Aussie, Ewan Green, whose entry was a Leyland P76. From a quick perusal of the contents and photos it looks like an interesting read. Thank you Clive. Another box contained the book Edwardian Cars by Ernest Carter, and workshop manuals for MGA, MGA twincam, MG Midget MG Magnette MK111, and MGB special tuning. Also included were Instruction manuals for Bedford Model M, Bedford CF, and Ford 6cyl truck 1942,plus mechanical specifications for 1932 Ford V8 and B4. This latter booklet was printed in NZ and was not actually a Ford publication. There was no indication of the donor so grateful thanks, whoever you are! The 101 used the 201 in³ (3,292 cc) six, taking advantage of its stock electric start, a first in a tractor.[1] Run at much lower revs than the truck engine, the 101 came in the usual standard and row-crop models, with four-speed transmission, and was capable of 20 mph (32 km/h) on roads.[1] The row-crop model offered adjustable rear wheel spacing and rear wheel brakes, as well as PTO. There was also a rare model with a single front wheel.[2] They also featured hood sides with dozens of louvers, which disappeared late in 1941.[3] The Super was upgraded to the 217 in³ (3,554 cc) Chrysler in 1940, [1] giving it almost 50 hp (37 kW) at

Weekend Away Moeraki February

3/4/5

A laid back, non competitive event travelling to Moeraki. All welcome. Accommodation: There are a large number of holiday homes available on the internet. Google “Accommodation Moeraki” which will bring up Bookabach, Holiday Homes, plus other options, camping ground etc. Saturday 4th: Travel down along as little of the main road as reasonably possible, probable lunch stop at Oamaru. Sunday: Optional touring day and we hope to have the usual Sunday night gathering at our digs but that will depend on numbers participating. Monday: Head for home. Tuesday is actually the Waitangi Day holiday and intending participants may want to consider an extra night at Moeraki or another venue like say Danseys Pass Holiday Park and head home on the holiday. No entry fee and while club eligible vehicles are preferred that is not at all essential. Further details will be provided to participants prior to the event. Contact Barry Barnes preferably by email bandcbarnes@slingshot.co.nz or phone 6885105 to register your interest. We will be overseas for 2 months from 23 August so early registration would be good.

A Northland Visit

By Barry Barnes When we in the Bay of Islands for a couple of weeks recently we were travelling in the far north when we came across the Matthews Vintage Collection in the Doubtless bay area as you near Aorere. We thought it could be worth avisit and came across a very eclectic display the life long collection of 1 man that featured cars from the vintage era onwards, motorcycles, automobilia, tractors historical household and general items literally some thing for everyone. Nashes featured strongly and I was taken with a 1927 Chev Capitol tourer which the owners, Lyn and Win Matthews, took to the Pan Pacific Rally in Christchurch via Cape Reinga and Bluff! It was a similar car to “Gert” who faithfully served as our family’s car in the mid 50s. As a 15year old it was my ambition to take over ownership of the old Chev, but, alas, that was not to be. We would definitely recommend anyone visiting Northland visit this museum and l understand that John Campbell and Ron Cooper have previously done so and no doubt there are others. I hope the Ed may be able to reproduce a few photos and if your interest is piqued Just google the Museum name and check out the gallery of their photos.

My sincere apologies for this late report from Shannon but the reading will be just as good this month as last month!

Restoration Run - 18 June 2017 by Shannon Stevenson On a frosty mid-June Sunday morning, over 20 vehicles, the oldest a 1923 Ford Model T truck, materialized outside our Redruth clubrooms for the Restoration run. With the day organized by the Irving family, serving cups of tea and coffee to warm us before setting out, it was interesting that a fair number of vehicles present were of the canvas top variety, albeit with the hoods up. With a variety present, a few of us were soon encountered by a Morris Marina pickup owner, keenly asking us 'experts' how much his vehicle was worth, one of us, Murray Martin, himself a Marina pickup owner. Although Barry Lovegrove is now no longer with us, it was pleasing to see two of his vehicles present, his Triumph 2500S now owned by Les Wenlock, and 1980 mini Clubman convertible, piloted by Grant Mitchell and sons. Hitting the road after 10, we were headed south, past a fleet of Jaguar owners cars out for a run of their own, and out west into the depths of Beaconsfield, before reaching the heights of Claremont, the dips of the Taiko valley, and the hairpin turns of Cleland Road Hill. With frost covering the ground, it was a trip through Raincliff – Clive Merry's 1928 Buick stopped at the rock art drawings – and Middle Valley, reaching the scenic Geraldine-Fairlie highway to reach the Fairlie Heritage Museum. With Ollie Irving armed with information sheets and guiding us to spaces in front of the vehicle barn, we soon set out picnic tables and chairs, braving the Mackenzie weather. Some interesting stories were told, particularly by Nola Day of the lunch stop on the recent West Coast Scenicland rally, visiting a large community based at Haupiri. With the Museum having opened its vast facility for us, much time was spent looking at the cars, trucks and farm machinery on site, along with historical Mackenzie museum displays and exhibits – one member proving their musical prowess on the piano housed in the former Fairlie railway station, on site since 1976.

Mid week Run—A very wet and cold grey day but a nice turn out even so, we set off in quite a few moderns and a few vintage. Up to Cave and back through wet roads lots of wet paddocks and stock to look at along the way. Arriving at our hosts for afternoon tea beside a cosy warm fire at Roz and Les’s. Thanks to Roz and Les for another great wee rally. The photo tells most of the story!!!

Waimate Garage Raid 22-7-2017 Well what can I say, Rain, Fridays downpours certainly had a dramatic effect on attendance, After checking on Friday evening, we were told it was still on but the attendance on Saturday was VERY small, One group from Ashburton, two groups of three from Timaru ,none from Oamaru. The road was fine only a small amount of surface water near the Morven Hall, Certainly there was plenty of evidence of water over SH1 on the Friday. In all we visited 7 “sheds” 3 before lunch & 4 after. Shed 1,an interesting collection of mainly Allis Chalmers Tractors plus a “Barn Find” Model T 4 door Sedan of about 1925 Shed 2 near Morven. A great “Man Cave” with some Ford Escorts & Cortina’s,A nice original Mk 2 4 door Escort, a sound 2 door Mk 1 Escort under development + a very tidy Mk1 Cortina, all with mechanical tweaks. The owner also has a Mk2 Cortina 1600E under Restoration Shed 3 also at Morven was about Model T’s . A 1915 restored Station Hack, a nearly finished TT truck, a partly complete Model A Woodie,& a restored chassis for a T Truck After a Lunch of hot soup +”Pea,Pie & Pud” +tea and coffee were headed off to Shed4 a large shed in upper High Street with a collection of Massey Fergusson Tractors. Shed 5 A long shed with quite a collection of vehicles,1952 Chev, Similar age Oldsmobile,3 Austin 7’s,1928 Chev Truck, a 1927 Model T 2 door sedan, an restored Caterpillar D4 almost completely reassembled. Another restored crawler tractor.+ A large Mercedes Tandem drive Truck Shed 6 A real treat A Very nicely presented collection of 3 Early 60’s Ford Falcon Futura convertibles, a Futura 2 door hard top,a 1970 Falcon, 67 Mustang in original condition, A GMC pick up PLUS an immaculate Ferrai 328 Shed 7 a collection of unrestored “Saved” tractors plus a couple of Falcons plus a “Desert Baked” 1957 Cadillac with lots of Patina, a big project or parts car ? It has all its original paper work with it, plus a long bed Chev 70’s pick up with potentional. A Big thank you to the Waimate Branch for hosting this event.
