Many thanks to Len and Gladys Haycock who set this Mid Month Meander up – initially suggesting the venue, and then making all of the arrangements to ensure a successful outing for us. See also the interesting report from Deidre McPherson SUNDAY RUN TO THE MOTHERED GOOSE CAFÉ – BULLS – 19 August 2018 In good weather a collection of fine vintage cars motored to the Mothered Goose Café in Bulls for afternoon tea - the route taking them through Rongotea, across SH1 onto Campion Road, then along Tangimoana Road to SH1 and into Bulls. Thirty one people spent about an hour at the Café after which nearly half the group ventured across SH1 and wandered down to the Bulls Museum which Len Haycock had arranged to remain open for an extra hour so that we could check it and its exhibits out. As well as a short term display on Scott’s Ferry, the museum has six permanent displays set up. One of the permanent displays is that of Chris Amon, a Kiwi motorsport legend who was born in Bulls. Another display is of the Flock House Farm Training Institute which was started in the early 1920’s as a repayment of debt to British seamen who gave their lives keeping the sea-lanes and oceans open for trade during WW1. Orphans of British seamen were invited to Flock House Farm and were trained to be farmers at no cost to them or their families. In the 1930’s the NZ Government took over the project to train young New Zealand men for farming careers and local colleges took over this role in 1988. Also at the museum is an ANZAC Centenary Memorial. This museum is well worth a visit – if you didn’t get to drop in on this outing or haven’t been in lately, make a point of calling by next time you are passing through Bulls. Thanks to those who supported these recent outings. Bryan and Catherine Abraham
