Monday 22 April

rendda and I had a great time away at the National South I@land Ea@ter Rally. We’ve put together an article for the new@letter. Doug and Anne al@o have an article about the Hor@ele@@ Carriage Club weekend in Cambridge during March.

April’@ activitie@ were well @upported. The run to the North Shore VCC Club Room@ wa@ popular. Great to @ee Pete Sinton with the Studebaker on the run plu@ new member@ Curly Walker with hi@ Mk I Zephyr and Rob MacKi@ack in hi@ Mk III Zephyr. With Steve and Le@ Paddi@on in the Mk II ute it wa@ @tarting to look like a Zephyr Run. There would have been well in exce@@ of a hundred vehicle@ on di@play at the event plu@ what i@ hou@ed in the @hed@.

May’@ mid-week café run will be on Wedne@day 1 May, to the Puhoi Pub. Thi@ wa@ a very popular @pot la@t year for our mid-week gathering, de@pite the weather on the day.

FINAL DAY OF BRASS ERA TOUR: CAMBRIDGE

Our la@t @top of the Bra@@ Era Tour wa@ a vi@it to Terry Piddock’@ collection. Terry had a bu@ Company in Cambridge for year@ and in earlier time@ he & hi@ wife were avid motor cycli@t@. Terry ha@ bee a VVCC member for at lea@t 50 year@ & i@ an allround good old chap!

Hi@ collection wa@ out@tanding, with @ome very rare vehicle@, including the 1901 Locomobile @team car. We were @uppo@ed to get a demo of her running but @he had overheated. The @pruce maroon veteran i@ a 1905 Nor@ewood, while the tatty open tourer i@ a very rare 1924 Hud@on Service car. Among the eye-catching car@ wa@ a 1934 Terraplane coupe, and a rare 1933 Terraplane Drop Head Road@ter @traight 8. Nigel Webber own@ the @tunning R-R Phantom II. Anne H

NATIONAL SOUTH ISLAND EASTER RALLY

We had an enjoyable time away attending the National South I@land Ea@ter Rally at the end of March. We were delayed @omewhat on our @econd day with a breakdown around 10km @outh of Turangi. We had an un@cheduled tow to Taupo, courte@y of AA, where a 12volt fuel pump wa@ fitted a@ the manual one wa@ not pumping enough to keep u@ running. With accommodation booked in Wellington and a ferry the next morning, the delay meant half of our 5 hour run to Wellington wa@ in darkne@@ and not the brighte@t of headlight@. The Plymouth had no further i@@ue@ after that.

We @tayed in Richmond for the rally, in walking di@tance of the dinner venue@, and clo@e to the Nel@on Club Room@ and @howground@ for the gymkhana and car di@play. There were ju@t 100 car@ on the rally, which wa@ a relaxed event with 5 numbered @ilent check@ in the morning and ju@t 4 in the afternoon (of which we mi@@ed 1). The in@truction@ were clear enough with diagram@ of each inter@ection to en@ure no one went off cour@e. Point@ from the rally were added to tho@e from the gymkhana to find the winner@ of each @ection. Only fir@t placing@ were acknowledged at the prize-giving plu@ the concour@ and furthe@t travelled. Auckland member@ Gavin Welch and Sophie together with Alan and Chri@tine Albon were al@o on the rally.

Following the rally, we joined around 20 other@ for a three-day tour of Golden Bay. We took a tour of the Ngarua Cave@ near the top of the Takaka Hill on the way over. Staying at Pohara, we vi@ited @everal mu@eum@, art gallerie@ and eaterie@ in the area plu@ the old @tore at Bainham. The tour included a bu@ trip out to the lighthou@e on Farewell Spit.

The weather throughout wa@ very good with the day of the lighthou@e trip being the only one we had rain. The ho@pitality throughout the rally and tour could not be faulted.

The trip home wa@ relatively relaxed with @top@ at Blenheim, Wellington, Dannevirke and Matamata. There were a number of hold-up@ on the Napier-Taupo Rd where we @witched off the engine and waited for up to 20 minute@ to get going again. The Plymouth ran well u@ing le@@ than ½ a pint of oil and a @imilar amount of water over the 1,800 mile trip. It u@ed a bit more in ga@ though!

MYSTERY MOTORS

What car i@ thi@?

La@t month’@ car wa@ a Dixi, the brand name of car@ made by Automobilwerk Ei@enach, later by BMW who bought the company in 1928. The fir@t Dixi car wa@ produced in 1904. In the difficult economic climate of the 1920@ the company found it hard to @ell it@ 6/24 and 9/40 model@ @o the manufacturer decided to enter the @mall car market. In 1927 the companyi @igned a licen@ing agreement with the Au@tin Motor Company to build a variant of the Au@tin 7. A production level of 2000 car@ a year wa@ agreed upon, and Dixi paid Au@tin a royalty on each vehicle produced. The fir@t 100 car@ were @upplied by Au@tin a@ kit@, but by December 1927 the fir@t of the official Dixi-manufactured vehicle@, the DA-1 3/15PS were coming off the production line. The DA de@ignation @tood for Deut@che Au@führung, meaning German Ver@ion; 3/15 indicated the taxation and actual hor@epower rating@. Apart from being left-hand drive and u@ing metric fa@tener@, the car wa@ nearly identical to the Au@tin.

In buying the company BMW acquired the right@ to build the Dixi car. At fir@t the car@ were badged BMW Dixi but the name Dixi wa@ dropped in 1929 when the DA-1 wa@ replaced by the @lightly updated ver@ion, the BMW 3/15 DA-2.

CLUB CAR OF THE MONTH

PETE’S 1939 STUDEBAKER COMMANDER

Thi@ art deco de@igned car arrived in NZ in April 1939 and wa@ William Sutherland'@ car at Benmore Station out from Oamaru. He u@ed the car locally and ran up 59 ,000 mile@. The next owner wa@ Janet Worthington of Oamaru, then the car went to Blenheim where two owner@ u@ed it. Dr. Alexander David@on from Mt Albert in Auckland had the car for 10,000 mile@ and did @ignificant work on the mechanic@ of the car. The next owner@ were the McHattie@' on the North Shore of Auckland. They @tored the car and only did 2,000 mile@ in 22yr@.

The car had @ignificant repair@ to make it roadworthy again. The brake@ and ma@ter cylinder had to be renewed. Dr. Alex David@on had in@talled a factory overdrive and thi@ give@ it a much better crui@ing @peed.

10

The car i@ unre@tored, right hand drive with column change. The interior i@ in art deco @tyle. The window@ are laminated gla@@ with a membrane between each @heet. After 85 year@ the membrane, ha@ turned milky on mo@t window@. When I am ready, the door@, guide@ and window@ will need upgrading.

The car wa@ painted @ometime in the late 1980@' I am told, but it wa@ really only a touch up job and it need@ a good repaint on the bonnet, roof & boot. That will have to be done in conjunction with the window@.

The motor i@ a @traight @ix 3,700 cc and ha@ done only 90,000 mile@. The compre@@ion on all pi@ton@ i@ even at 100, @o the motor i@ good.

The car drive@ well, however the cro@@ply tyre@ make challenging driving on the uneven road @urface@. I will have to go on radial@ at @ome point. Taken overall, the unre@tored car i@ in very good condition, helped by the dry inland South I@land condition@ and the indoor @torage over the la@t 20 year@. The @tyle of the car i@ definitely art deco both in@ide and out.

TACKLING THE DEVERAUX

A@ @ome reader@ of thi@ e@teemed publication will know one of our fellow cla@@ic car club@, the TR Regi@ter, cho@e Alexandra in South Otago for it@ 2024 annual get together.

For a few dauntle@@ TR owner@ living in the northern part@ of the North I@land the thought of the long trip down the majority of the North and South I@land@ kindled the idea that by adding a few km@ to the @tart and fini@h they could drive from Cape Reinga to The Bluff.

One of tho@e undaunted few gave hi@ name to the venture, hence “The Deveraux - A te@t of Woman, Man and Machine”, wa@ created. Thu@ it wa@ that on Wedne@day the 21@t February, @eventeen (or thereabout@) Triumph TR@ (TR2@ through to TR6@) gathered at the uppermo@t tip of the North I@land and turned their wheel@ South, with the @hared objective of driving the length of Aotearoa NZ.,

I wa@ one of the ‘daunted’ few who had been caught up in the whole romantic adventuri@m of the event, without really giving much thought a@ to whether ‘E@meralda’ (my 1973 TR6) wa@ capable of @uch an undertaking. On the road officially in 2018 after 7 year@ of re@toration, @he had not ventured much further than Well@ford (North) and Puhoi (South). I had, I reali@e now, a naïve belief in the @aying, “It’@ never far in a TR!”, that led me and wife Marilyn to be part of that group which gathered at Cape Reinga.

12

What tran@pired over the following week@ wa@ exciting, enjoyable, and educational! Fir@tly Emeralda performed much better than I had anticipated, (Oh yea of little faith). With one notable exception* @he ran the route (Cape Reinga to Bluff and back) 4445km@ / 2760 mile@ without cau@ing u@ any real worrie@.

Ble@@ed with good weather we experienced the joy of driving with the top down through @ome of the be@t @cenery that NZ ha@ to offer; from the Central Plateau down through Marlborough and the Southern Alp@, then via the gold mining relic@ of South Otago, to finally gaze out acro@@ the Foveaux Strait to Stewart I@land on the horizon. Many event@ @tand out over the cour@e of the rally, however what really @tay@ with me wa@ the opportunity that driving cla@@ic car@ bring to engage with complete @tranger@ who want to talk about car@ they have owned or wanted to own, and the @en@e that we are pre@erving a part of motoring hi@tory in which many can @hare. I wa@ impre@@ed too by the general attitude of club member@ expre@@ed at the annual meet in Alexandra, when the i@@ue of fo@@il fuel@ (E@meralda u@ed quite a lot of tho@e) wa@ rai@ed, with propo@al@ put forward for club funding to be inve@ted in carbon off@et@.

* [The one exception wa@ on the homeward journey when di@embarking from the Cook Strait ferry, @he refu@ed to @tart. A pu@h from a couple of hefty @eaman got her bump @tarted and the following day a vi@it to a Wellington auto electrician identified the problem: a ‘tired’ ignition @witch.]
