After a quick cuppa, Rally organiser Bryan explained the rally route and rally pack details to the 22 entrants. It was good to see a couple of outside entrants, Murray and Penny Firth from Auckland in their 1931 Bedford, and Norman Willis and navigator Cristina Van Dam from Wellington in their 1925 Fiat. With two extra pairs of eyes in our car we hoped we could easily find all 30 of the photographic clues and be in contention for a prize, but little did we know we were much mistaken. One of the pairs of eyes almost went to sleep at about 50 miles into the morning run and the other was more interested in spotting animals. The rally route was almost 80 miles long and took in scenery around Bunnythorpe, Coylton, Feilding and Halcombe districts before ending up at the Pohangina Hall for lunch. Just as well Bryan had booked the Hall for lunch as it rained again during this stop. In the morning run we missed a couple of turns and had to back pedal only to see other entrants making the same mistake but not turning around. This we found to be confusing. Little did we know that there were A & B routes with subtle differences. Nice one Bryan!! After an enjoyable lunch, prize giving took place. 1st prize went to Allan & Suzanne Hardacre – they got 19 out of the 30 photographic clues. Whilst Suzanne was navigator and did the rally in the front passenger seat, Allan did take three of his students on the rally and one of them came up with him as navigator (suspect he had four navigators).
