Chairman’s Report September 2017 I’ve been thinking, and thinking quite hard and I find that because our Branch seems to be running along without any controversy or problems, writing the Chairman’s Report is a real struggle. One of my work colleagues suggested that I go through all of my old reports and pick the eyes out of them. But that seems a bit of a cop-out.

On behalf of our Branch I would like to welcome our new members and at the same time extend our sympathies to those who have lost a loved one.

We have some exciting runs coming up in the near future. The Daffodil Rally will have been run by the time this goes to print and on the weekend of October 27 – 29 a rally to Te Anau with a Post 60/Post80s section going into Milford Sound. The reason for this part of the run being restricted to P60/P80s is that the cars need to be able to maintain an average of 90kph.

Having gone into Milford in the Rover some years ago, I’d also say that a good set of brakes are in order because the last time I had rather concerning brake fade by the time we got to the Cascades and the Rover’s brakes are fairly good.

Happy Motoring Murray A famous US general dies, and his ashes are to be taken to Arlington National Cemetery. All the airlines are booked, and no other planes are available. Someone comes up with the idea of using a helicopter, and it arrives at 5am. The newspapers report the story under the headline “The Whirly Bird Gets the Urn”.

Club Captain’s Report September 2017 Hi – another month has gone by and the days are getting longer and hopefully warmer.

Hope you have all your cars in ship-shape order for another season’s runs.

The club cars looked great in Ron Osborne’s funeral procession. Thanks to those who participated.

From the Editor’s keyboard This edition of The Wiper has a slightly competitive feel, thanks to contributions from Evan Henderson on the Nelson branch’s Sandy Bay Hillclimb and Greg Elder on restoring a Pontiac Fiero race car.

There is also a summary of the VCC AGM and Executive meeting held in Blenheim. This was my first time at a VCC AGM and it was an enjoyable and eye-opening experience. The local branch (Marlborough) certainly pulled out all the stops to welcome the delegates. They laid on sunny weather, transport to and from the airport and our motels as well as the AGM venue and to the branch clubrooms and parts shed (on the same site as the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre – which I, unfortunately, did not have time to visit) on the Sunday David North 5

Follow-up to Eligibility of Post 1980 Vehicles This issue was covered under “Correspondence” during the VCC AGM on 12th August. There was further input from the Southland branch delegate and the issue stimulated a great deal of discussion. As happened at the August monthly meeting here, there was a difference of opinion as to whether a 1987 car was first VCC-eligible in 2017 or 2018. There was, however, agreement that the current wording seemed ambiguous and needed tidying up to avoid any further confusion. Fortunately, one of the proposers of the remit to introduce the Post 1980V category was at the AGM and was able to clarify the original intent of the remit. The upshot is that the Management Committee’s interpretation that a 1987 vehicle is not eligible until the 1st January 2018 has been upheld and the Management Committee will put forward a remit to amend the wording.

In the interim, the Registrar is now only issuing Vehicle Identity Cards to vehicles that are VCC-eligible at the time the VIC is issued David North

Who? Where? When? What?

Much to my surprise, no suggestions as to the identity of this dashing young fellow were forthcoming prior to the August meeting.

However, at the meeting, a person who should perhaps remain nameless identified his brother, Gerry (minus his trademark mutton chop whiskers and posing with his first car,) as the subject of the photo. No indication of location or date was forthcoming.

What We Did On Our Holidays Nelson Sandy Bay Hill Climb

Three nice looking Jags at the Sandy Bay Hill climb held on the 21 st of May, the first car is my sister's partner's XK140, next is my Mk2 and the other Mk2 is my brother’s.

On the 18th May Terry Inder and myself left Gore and headed for Nelson to take part in the Nelson Car Club combined with the Vintage Car Club hill climb. On the way we met up with my brother Willie and his wife Sharron at Palmerston. They had travelled from Alexandra, also in a red Mk2 Jag. From there we carried on to Christchurch where we stayed the night. On the Friday morning we awoke to a very hard frost, during the night it blew a gale then rained like h--l and then froze, making it impossible to unlock the cars, open the doors or close the window that my passenger left half open. After applying quite a bit of warm water to the affected areas we were on our way to Nelson via Springs Junction Murchison.

We encountered a lot of trucks and road works on the way but all in all a good trip to Mapua where we stayed with my sister and her partner Phil, who has the Jag XK140 in the photo. Thanks to their generosity we stayed for the next few days.

Next on the list was scrutineering which was on the Saturday afternoon at Stoke. All OK, the 3 Jags passed with flying colours. On the Sunday it was up at sparrow’s, crank the old girls up and head up the road to the Sandy Bay hill.

Well, that's another story as my brother and myself were in for a little surprise as this hill is approx. 3km long and has 33 plus corners, some sharp and some very sharp, just not made for Jaguars but a lot of fun.

The vintage boys looked after their cars which is more than can be said for a couple of the car club boys. They bent their cars more than just a little bit, one in a Honda had quite an exciting ride backwards off the road over a big drop with only the pride hurt.

Jim Bennett in the Fury won the VCC section, Jim takes part in our hill climb every year. Don't ask us our times or what beat us, we still had a lot of fun, old boys and their toys!

A very enjoyable trip, well worthwhile and the old Jag travelled there and back without a problem just a couple of gallons of petrol, ha ha!

Tuesday Ramble, 25th July 2017 As some of us were standing around the car park we were aware of a sudden wind from the north and it was cold straight off the snow. We gladly signed the register and, led once again by the Austin A40 of Neil McVicar, headed to Riversdale. Ground conditions as we travelled were still wet from recent rains and, as we approached Riversdale, we could see heavy snow on the mountains which explained the cold northerly.

Our jaunt coincided with the 44th Annual Riversdale Mixed Media Exhibition, but it had to wait until after we partook of a finger lunch across the road at Oliver’s Bar.

At the Exhibition we were amazed at the variety of articles, ranging from patchwork quilts which were displayed around the walls, with paintings lower down. There was jewellery, some in display cabinets; driftwood horses, dogs, etc. then on to the glassware, all glittering under spotlights.

Copper, brass and chrome articles, the delicacy of some of the badges, brooches and earrings showed off the patience of the makers; models carved out of limestone; bowls turned from tree trunks and most males were amazed at things made from old metal “junk” we have all thrown out. The 350 entries covered it all and certainly showed off the talents of the many artists.

What’s In Your Shed?

1985 Pontiac Fiero Race Car Restoration

by Greg Elder A couple of years back I was asked by Canadian friend Jack Ondrack if I would restore a Pontiac race car and a 1965 Iso Rivolta 2-door coupe for him. Both cars were in Colorado Springs USA at a race car shop where Jack had several of his race cars housed and prepared. The cars and their spares etc. were loaded into a new 40-foot container and started a very long journey to Riversdale. After being delayed in a port strike in the USA which affected shipping worldwide for many months the container finally arrived in my yard in December 2015.

We unloaded the cars to find that the Iso was in very poor condition.

There had been some work done on it back in Colorado but it would need many hours more to get it back to being a nice vehicle.

Now to the Pontiac: This car was first raced by Dick Murray in America. If you go to http://www.racingsportscars.com/chassis/photo/GTU-002.html you will see a series of photos of this car. The car that arrived in New Zealand is exactly as Murray raced it: It has a tube chassis following Pontiac Motorsports drawings (about 100 of these cars were built, most went to Central America, South America and Puerto Rico for the Caribbean four-cylinder Pro Series); an under three-litre Pontiac SD4 pushrod engine, built by Huffaker Engineering in Sonoma, California with Kinsler fuel injection; a Hewland DGB 201 transaxle, the same as Hewland was supplying for Champ Cars in 1984; 16 inch BBS wheels and AP Brakes.

Pontiac Fieros with 2.7 and 2.9-litre pushrod motors ran in the IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) GTU (under three-litre) class from 1984-1987, all the years in which Fieros were produced. The Fiero line was discontinued in 1988. Fieros were not competitive with the other makes until IMSA allowed the use of a four-valve dohc head conversion that GM commissioned from Cosworth. By the time that 25

head was ready, GM had withdrawn factory support in light of their plan to cease Fiero production – so nobody raced Fieros in professional series like IMSA. The last IMSA GTU Fiero engine, the four-valve 2.9 litre Cosworth, made ~ 400hp. The 2.9 litre pushrod engines (the one in the car now) made 300hp and the early 2.7-litre engines made 270hp.

After removing the body many hours were spent repairing all the fibreglass panels and assembling back to its original shape. We replaced the alloy body mounts and front radiator mounts with light furniture tubing steel for ease of manufacture and pressed up new alloy undertrays, interior panels etc. I then applied many high solid undercoats followed by a lot of block sanding before finally painting it back to its original yellow colour. The chassis is painted black and on the interior body panels I used a light grey. We replaced the rear and side windows with new polycarbonate and urethaned in an original glass windscreen. I fitted to the original rear panel LED tail and brake lights.

Mechanically I have rebuilt the brakes with new rotors and pads which I had made in the USA to original specs and re-kitted all master cylinders with new seals etc. The suspension and steering is very nicely built so I have just checked, cleaned and re-assembled. I have had the motor running after replacing wiring, fuel lines, checking over the fuel injection and ignition, replacing drive belts to the mechanical fuel injection, dry sump and water pumps.

Upon trying to drive it the clutch would not work correctly and on removing the rear transaxle I discovered that one of the double clutch plates had been fitted back to front which had caused the whole assembly to distort with heat. So a new double plate Tilton clutch was sourced from USA and fitted. Here’s hoping the problem is fixed.

The car now (May 2017) is ready for testing. (Any volunteers in the club that are sick of driving slow old vintage cars!!!)

Back to the Iso I mentioned at the start of this article. It’s for sale as an unfinished project. It’s a very rare car with only 700 built. Fitted with a 327-cubic inch Corvette V8 and gearbox from new. (There is a spare 800hp all alloy Donovan engine with it also.) Jack has decided to send me out another two Pontiac race cars to restore so the Iso has to go.

So, members, there must be one of you interested in spending many hours at night in your shed building up a rare classic road or race car!!

VCC AGM and Executive Committee Meeting, August 2017 I attended these two meetings as the Gore Branch delegate and have attempted to pick out the items from the Agendas and subsequent discussion that are of most interest and/or significance to the branch.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this summary, or the meetings themselves.

Executive Meeting The meeting started with a welcome to the first Junior Member to attend an Executive Committee meeting. This was followed by an explanation of the duties and responsibilities of the Branch Delegates for the benefit of the newbies (like me!).  



  

Health & Safety Policy and Guidelines for the VCC National Day have been provided to all branches. These can be adopted for branch events.

The role of the Communications & Marketing Manager is to be reviewed by the Management Committee as the initial 6-month contract is up and the workload for the person’s full-time job has expanded. He is continuing to support the VCC Facebook page and posting the branch magazines on the website.

The first magazine was posted on the website on 9 October 2016 and there are now 216 magazines from 34 branches on there. There have been around 13,300 “reads” in the last 10 months and for the last 6 months this has been steady at around 1300 a month.

The Face book page was set up on 5 May 2017. As of 6 August, the page has 400 followers which, out of a membership of about 8,600, is not very impressive!

Two remits to make minor changes to the Club bylaws: carried.

As of 26 June 2017, total membership was 8,628 compared to 8,505 on 23 June 2016 and total vehicle numbers listed in the Club database were 19,798 compared to 19,321 (although not all vehicles 32



      



are listed, at the member’s request.) Total membership of the Gore branch was 148.

Suggestion from one branch that a television programme on “vintage” cars would help to boost interest/membership. Does anyone in the Club have the necessary expertise?

Branches should ensure their constitutions have been updated with the right clauses for tax-exempt status. Julie Cairns-Gee, Administration Manager at Head Office has the 2010 notes on this.

Branches should attempt to find out why members resign and follow up when the “unfinancial” list comes out.

Could all template be put on the Club website?

“Membership Application Fees” paper presented by David Yorke and discussed. Suggested that a single “national” first membership fee be adopted so that all members paid the same fee for the first year and then for subsequent years individual branch fees as at present. Would make online joining a possibility and be simpler to operate. The full presentation will be sent to all branches.

Suggestion from the floor that Club membership records be computerised to make it easier when researching for “year badges”.

Julie pointed out that most of the Club’s membership records are in large ledger books and very difficult and time-consuming to scan.

Information on the Far North branch Fuel Card scheme to be sent to all branches again.

Dunedin Vero Rally: Financial review has been carried out and made available; the company set up to run the Rally has been wound up.

Beaded Wheels cover price has been increased by $1, too early to tell what, if any, effect this has had on sales.

The Treasurer emphasised the existence of the Youth Subsidy and encouraged branches to take advantage of it.

Retiring North Island Club Captain farewelled with a presentation and incoming Club Captain (Kaaren Smylie) welcomed.

Two Notices of Motion (one to remove the need for Proposer and Seconder for new members and one to rename the vehicle categories) both failed. The need for proposers/seconders for new members will be looked at again to try and streamline the membership process.

There was much discussion about “historic” versus “vintage” vehicles; the need for an “online” voting system to increase participation; format and content of membership application form.

My letters regarding Post 1980 Vehicles eligibility dates were discussed at length, with additional input from Southland branch.

The Speed Steward expressed disappointment that still no branch had put in a bid to hold a “National Speed Event”.

NZ Federation of Motoring Clubs VCC representative’s Report: retaining 6-month WoFs should eventually be untenable as the proportion of such vehicles in the national fleet diminishes.

Registrar’s Report: Branch Signatories must ensure VIC renewal forms are checked before sending to Head Office. Workshops for new VIC signatories are too expensive due to high turnover rate so an “update” bulletin is to be sent out at intervals instead.

The President pointed out that the Club’s public liability insurance covers all branches and branch activities.

The 2021 International Rally Director has resigned. Ongoing discussions between the Management Committee and Taranaki branch regarding the problems.

David Yorke presented a paper on “VCC National and International Events: The Future”. Three high profile “classic motoring” events were looked at: Americarna, Beach Hop and the Art Deco Festival.

Data on attendance, entry costs, sponsorship, eligible vehicles and format were presented. Recommended that a subcommittee be set up and tasked with making recommendations on the format of future events. Much discussion about these events, VCC events, format, frequency, participation and costs ensued. The paper will be sent to all branches and a report will be submitted to the March 2018 Management Committee meeting.

The President emphasised the need for more content from the branches: one photo, a short video plus 6 words.

The number of 50-year badges being presented means that the President can no longer present them all so other members of the Management Committee will assist.

The need for accurate and detailed information to support the award of “Year” badges was stressed. One branch has apparently awarded such badges to “deserving” members who don’t have the necessary length of membership!

National Day update: 27 branches taking part, big range of different activities. In future, more notice will be given so branches can avoid clashes with other events. A modest budget will be established for publicity, design and marketing. National media coverage has been disappointing although Seven Sharp will be doing a piece on it.

Should more be done nationally about media coverage or are branches happy doing it themselves? There will be a “wrap up” report afterwards and suggestions for the 2018 event.

The next AGM will be the second weekend in August 2018 and be hosted by the Hawke’s Bay Branch.

A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to the Marlborough Branch for their efforts in hosting this year’s.

I'm restoring a 1938 Vauxhall 25 (a big English-assembled sedan car) but I'm missing the bucket seats. They were discarded early on for a conventional New Zealand bench seat. I'm not expecting to find the exact original bucket seats as this wasn't a common car, but I'm wondering if you have in your spares a pair of non-folding bucket seats that might suit.
