Club Night
7.30pm
3rd Wednesday of every Month
Having joined the Manawatu Branch of the VCC of NZ in November 1963 it was only fitting that I should go to Palmerston North for this occasion. My friend from Christchurch, John Hastelow joined the branch in 1967 after buying a very early 1924 Chrysler 6 (70 Series ) and he said he would come up for the weekend celebrations
We met up at the Club rooms at 9.00am for the start of the Rally to Apiti Tavern for lunch. After lunch was the competitive section for the 54 entrants. This consisted of finding round plastic dinner plates that had been attached to steel standards along the rally route. We managed to spot ten of these on the road back to the club rooms via the Pohongina Valley Scenic road.
The evening dinner was held at the Manawatu VCC club rooms and after a very enjoyable meal three members spoke of their memories of their early days as members of the branch. Bruce Poole 1963 to 1974, Bob Pettigrew 1975 1983, John Callesen 1984 to present day.
The prize giving followed and lo and behold Bruce Poole and John Hastelow were awarded the over all winners trophy and Kenneth and Annette Foot in third place. By 9.30pm most people had gone home.
On Sunday several places of interest were able to be visited. John Hastelow was staying at John Callesens place for the weekend so after picking him up we went out to Peter Thompson Motorcycles for a couple of hours, Herb Garden Farm for lunch, and then Black Barn Collections all located in the Ashurst area. Then back to the Club rooms for a BBQ meal.
On the Monday morning I drove out to John and Judy Callesens home to say goodbye to John Hastelow. We also looked at the 1913 Newton Tourer project that is under way in John Callesens shed. Work is well under way on the reconstruction of the wooden body.
A great weekend of “catch ups “ and a very well organised event. Congratulations to Bruce for his many achievements

Tararua has great walks and bike rides, beautiful open spaces as you drive around the farming area.
Sunday 20th November—Run for all members.
We are now meeting and having a Public Display in the Hall Street Car park which is by the Railway Station from 9am to 10am. The days run instructions will be handed out at the Public Display. There will be a short run to Russell Phillips Farm where he will give us a talk about Dairy Farming sustainability. From there we will head back into town for our Lunch Stop at the Show Grounds on High Street.
The first Railway Station in Dannevirke As it stands today
The first Dannevirke railway station was constructed in Hall Street, Dannevirke in 1903 after the railway line between Woodville and Napier was completed in 1887. The Station consisted of two waiting rooms, a luggage, parcel office, booking office, a lobby, stationmaster's office, mail store, porters' and lamps rooms. Note the Marseilles tile roof. The station was demolished in 1983 however the large canopy still remains in place today. It has cast iron pillar supports. Note the brackets with an ornamental organic pattern of leaves and fronds.

Here we are almost to the end of October , Bathurst has been and gone won by a Kiwi. Well done SVG. This was the last race ever for Holden at Bathurst, so these cars will become Classics.
At our October meeting we had Esther and Graham Smith from the HBVCC inviting our Club to come on board with them for the running of the 2026 or 2027 Vero Rally. The club has agreed to help subject to more information from VCC NZ.
Fellow member and Counsellor Jerry Greer addressed the meeting seeking support and ideas for the Old Waipukurau Humber Ambulance. The Ambulance is up for sale, if anyone is interested.
Rod and Scarlett have the East Coast Adventure and I’m sure there are plenty of stories to tell. I understand some cars didn’t make it!!, they will be ready for next year’s Adventure.
Laurie and Gloria’s Veteran Rally 18th and 19th November is getting closer and with a run open to everyone wishing to participate on the Sunday 20th November.
Christmas Party at Oruawharo on Saturday 19th December. We generally organise food donations for the Food Bank, this year we have changed it to $10 donation per couple to go to our local branch of The Red Cross to help sponsor PJ’s for CHB Kids.
September was Blue September highlighting Prostate Cancer. October is pink highlighting Breast Cancer month.
November is Men’s General Health Month. So a simple way of supporting this is to participate in The Movember Challenge, so men let’s DO IT. Take a before pic / selfie and txt or email them to Janet at: janetmweaver@gmail.com or 02102263365. We will organise prizes and a picture board to be presented at the club Christmas party.
Next year looking at an Art Deco Run around CHB for those that generally don’t participate in the Hawke’s Bay Event.
Labour weekend is the last holiday until Christmas, hope you have enjoyed it.
All the best as we head into November

6 Chairman's Report—November 2022
Greetings everyone
The Norsewood run on Sunday 25th September was a history and geography lesson in one. We were told about the early lives of the settlers. The struggles they had clearing the land and building their houses.
Then we went to the source of the Manawatu River, where if you so desired you could drink the water.
There is extensive native planting occurring in this area.
We went to the Ormondville Railway Station to look at the accommodation that has been set up as it may have been 100 years ago.
Across the road is Don Scott's property which stands out for the number of tractors one can see. In the sheds there was all sorts of items and cars from years gone.
A very nice lunch was put on by the Norsewood Makotuku Hall committee which was a fund raiser for materials needed for the hall maintenance There were a selection of homemade soups, none of which lasted very long. Then there was an array of cakes and sandwiches. Heather Cheer gave a talk on some Scandinavian customs and husband Graeme gave us a talk on the woolshed at Te Ohu station. An interesting day and enjoyed by all who attended.
We were accompanied for the day by the Central Districts Zephyr and Zodiac Club, thank you for your support. Was nice to have your cars and members enjoy the day too.
In November the CHB Veteran Rally is being held. There will be some changes to the programme due to roadworks and timing. Details to follow.
Labour weekend sees the Manawatu Branch have its 60th year celebrations. Hope all went well for you.
Hope all the entrants on the East Coast Adventure had a good time and a safe trip.
Stay Safe and Drive Carefully.

7 Laurie's Lot—November 2022
Rod and Scarlett had a heater hose puncture just out of Waikaremoana losing all the water from the cooling system in their Holden Commodore. Many, many thanks to Keith, Ken and others, they were back up and running about 3 hours later as it was an awkward repair.
Day one by Chris and Bernard Murphy: Monday morning and our trip began. We had decided to leave Monday morning from home in Napier. Others who had further to travel from Dannevirke and Waipukurau went to Wairoa on Sunday and stayed in a motel there. We got away in good time to get to Wairoa by 10.00am to meet up with the rest of our travel buddies for morning tea at the well known Oslers Bakery. Here, Rod handed out our instructions for our 'East Coast Adventure'. Little did we know that word Adventure was going to come so true for us all and for some even more. One car had already broken down and didn't get past Bay View so having returned their car to a garage in the Bay the Hopping's jumped in with, as it turned out the rescuers of the day Garry and Kaye Carswell who were travelling in their modern car and were able to complete the tour with them.
After our refreshments and fueling up we headed off to get to Lake Waikaremoana for lunch. Barring a few potholes we made it to Waikaremoana without any problems. For us we went down memory lane as we went past signs to Camp Kaitawa, a school camp we went to with our children. Seeing Panakiri Bluff and remembering the tramp to the top and the other tramps and things we did with the school kids.
We arrived at the Waikaremoana Motor Camp for lunch and a break from driving. After lunch we all headed off for the next part of our journey to Murupara. Again dodging the potholes we were enjoying the scenery or I was Bernard's eyes were pretty much on the road as Patrick our little car didn't want to be swallowed up in one of the numerous potholes as we are very low to the ground. However it was only a short distance and around the corner we came to a stop as Camp Father and Camp Mother (Rod and Scarlet) were stopped with steam coming from under their bonnet. Two cars had stopped and everyone following all pulled up as well. Those that knew started looking under the bonnet and under the car. Soon our couple who had already done the first rescue arrived and being a mechanic his head went under the bonnet as well. As Bernard or I weren't able to offer any suggestions and we certainly weren't able to tow anybody so we decided to carry on our way.

East Coast Adventure
Day One continues:—Our journey through the awesome scenery was tricky due to the road conditions but we did stop to view a very cool waterfall that went under the Mokau Bridge. It was a long slow trip on this challenging road but we finally got to the open road and increased our speed. We felt like we were flying and we were only doing 60 kph. We got to Lake Aniwhenua and had a much needed toilet and coffee stop before we did the last part of our journey to Whakatane and our bed for the night.
Not having heard from the breakdown crew we went to be hosted by the Eastern Bay of Plenty VCC for dinner. However only half of our group were there, the rest were still on the road somewhere and until they got to some reception we didn't know how close they were. Finally I manged to make contact and at that stage they were still a couple of hours away. So I could keep our hosts informed. As there was plenty of food it was decided we would start dinner at 7.00pm and keep dinner for the rest. We found out as well one car that stopped to see what was going on would not start again and the Gollans had to be towed back to the motor camp by our Rescuers of the day. The Carswell's to await a trailer to take them back to Wairoa.
A cheer went up as each of the stragglers came in the door well ready for their dinner. By 8.30pm we were all reunited again and all having enjoyed a lovely dinner and drinks we were hearing of the adventures of the day. Sadly our two at Waikaremoana had a very sparse dinner and had to talk to each other as there was no T.V or radio. It had been a long day for everyone so by about 9.00pm we all headed to bed to recover and prepare for the next part of our Adventure.

Day Two by Ken Lyons The day started with a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs in our unit at Barringtons motel. Bruce Poole and Waipukurau Construction were involved in the construction of this motel complex approx. 25 years ago. After the roadside rescues of the previous day we were hoping today would be incident free and our machinery would keep “ticking over”. Not far from Whakatane at Quay café in Ohope we stopped for our morning coffee and scone. Bruce, Brian and Ken were the last to leave Ohope so we decided not to visit the Museums in Opotiki and keep in proximity of our fellow travellers. However Ken and Brian drove past our lunch stop turn off at Waihau Bay and it wasn’t until Bruce chased after us and honked his horn 10ks further on that we realised our error. Thanks Bruce! We made our way back to Waihau Bay Café. Here we enjoyed a great lunch that was really worth the return journey. The drive to our destination Lottin Point is very scenic, winding over headlands with magnificent coastal views. Here we were thrilled to welcome Iain and Eva Gollan who had “got back on the road” with the Daimler starter motor issues under control. Lottin Point Motel is built on a headland overlooking the bay with a rocky shore. Beautiful views and no doubt home to an abundance of crayfish. John Foot unfortunately had a fall which required a drive back to Te Kaha for medical attention. Thanks to Barry Smales for his support on the drive to Te Kaha and back. John and Barry arrived back to a great welcome in time to join us all for our meal and entertainment. We were entertained by members contributing jokes ,songs poetry and a good time was had by all. Our wonderful hosts also contributed a karaoke item for our enjoyment. Bruce ,Brian and Ken were in the Fisherman's lodge accommodation which was to be our “party room” however the Dining room had served this purpose and I think we all had a great day and were ready to rest and be ready for our third days journey to Gisborne.

Day 2 by Sandra and Mervyn:—A leisurely drive along the coast today (19 deg) stopping first at Ohope for coffee and the ladies to look in a couple of shops, then onto Opotiki for a browse in the museums and poke around in the op shop.
After checking out the Bays along the way we regrouped at Waihau Bay and had lunch. (This is where Taika Waititi filmed the movie "Boy"). Then off to Lottin Point. The Motel was very nice and after dinner there was an evening of entertainment, by some of the talented club members.

Day 4 by Henk and Ella: The day started with clear blue sky and lots of sunshine. If you thought you had seen enough trees in your life, this day proved us otherwise. After a pot whole dodging route we arrived at the National Arboretum of NZ. Eastwoodhill in Okahuatiu. The cafe was opened up especially for us, thanks to the excellent organisers and a beautiful morning tea.
This park is 151 hectares, with over 3,500 different trees, shrubs and climbers from around the world. Mapped out are 6 different walks with a variety of interesting themes. We will have to come back here to explore more and spend more time. After visiting the waterfall in Rere we all went on our way.

National Veteran Rally
Registration is open to all Veteran Vehicles manufactured before 31 Dec.1918 VIC required.
The rally is based in the expansive grounds of LaValla Estate less than 2km from the historical small township of Tuakau. Tuakau is located in the district of Franklin. Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the west coast and is known as the breadbasket of Auckland, growing potatoes, vegetables, and other products on its rich volcanic soils. The area offers great motoring country for veteran vehicles. To reach Tuakau and LaValla, those coming from the South can leave the Waikato Expressway (SH1) at Pokeno, just South of the Bombay Hills. Those coming from the north exit the motorway at Bombay. The registration fee covers: ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast; light refreshments at start and finish of each day’s run; three lunches; final banquet dinner; Movie Night (in the small cinema at LaValla); Rally Pack and plaque.
Key Dates
The event runs over the last weekend of February, the weekend following the Art Deco Festival in Napier. The rally commences on Friday morning with registration from 8.30am and breakfast and rally briefing from 9.00am to 10.00am ready to depart on the first day’s run at 10.30am. The rally concludes with a celebratory dinner and awards on Sunday Evening.
Rally Headquarters
The rally is based at LaValla. Registration, the first ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast and the final dinner are held at LaValla. Each day’s run departs and finishes at LaValla with light refreshments. There will be ample opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new friends in a beautiful, relaxing setting. LaValla has an interesting history as a former Marist college, now in private ownership. It is less than 2km out of the township of Tuakau, made up of well maintained and expansive grounds (109 acres) overlooking rural countryside. LaValla provides a secure site where veteran vehicles, modern cars and trailers can be safely parked for the duration. There is limited accommodation at LaValla, and more accommodation is also available at the nearby boutique Tuakau Hotel. Other options are the motels in Pukekohe and Pokeno.
Rally Programme
Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the West Coast, bounded to its South by the Waikato River. Built up areas, busy roads and steep roads will be avoided. There are short and long routes each day.
Day 1. The route uses roads criss crossing the Bombay Hills including the old main roads before the mo torway was opened.
Day 2. The route crosses the Waikato River on the iconic Tuakau Bridge and follows the river to its mouth at Port Waikato.
Day 3. The destination is the historical port town of Waiuku, taking in Glenbrook Vintage railway close by.
