Sunday 21st August 2022
On Sunday morning, 21st August 2022 the sunshine sparkled on the line up of Vintage and Classic cars parked up in James Street for the CHB VCC Daffodil Day Rally fundraiser for the local branch of the Cancer Society. Kaye Carswell and her team had done a great job organising this event which was well supported with a record number of official entries. Thanks also go to Rod Naylor and members of the Jaguars of Hawkes Bay Club for their attendance.

Seton Thomsen arrives at the start and gets instructions from marshal, Barry Smales. At approx 1.00pm display cars left James St to travel either a long or short route mapped out by Lynn Cross. Both runs taking us through some of the beautiful CHB countryside to arrive at our afternoon tea destination Junction Wines (at the junction of SH 2 and SH 50 ). Here we enjoyed the magnificent afternoon tea provided by the ladies from the local Cancer Society. Many thanks to our hosts John and Jo Ashworth of Junction Wines for hosting our friendly and relaxed afternoon. John Ashworth and John Callesen (from Manawatu VCC branch) both ex All Blacks provided some laughter and entertainment sharing memories of interesting and amusing anecdotes of their All Black days on tour. Daffodil Rally—Sunday 21st August 2022—by Ken Lyons
Some of us enjoyed sampling some of the Junction Wines selection later in the afternoon. If you have not tried the Pinot Noir, I suggest you treat yourself to this sometime soon! Not only was the day an enjoyable experience but thanks to the support of our members and the great organising of Kaye and her team. I understand somewhere in the vicinity of $4000 was raised to be donated to our local branch of the Cancer Society.

This is from way back, possibly over 100 years ago.
All the entrants going on the East Coast Adventure in mid October are reminded that their instructions for the run are to be picked up from us in Wairoa on the morning of 17th October.
Prior to the overhead bridge being erected across the railway line about a mile north of Waipukurau there was a level crossing. No doubt some people met their end there. The overhead bridge was replaced about five years ago with what we now have on S/H2.

At our August meeting Barry Smales gave a very detailed account of their trip around the South Island.
Many thanks to Judy Thomsen, Lynne Smales, Sandra Cross and Gloria Malcolmson for looking after the entries and raffles. The Local Rotary Club did a grand job running the sausage sizzle, well received by all. New World once again donated the sausages and many faces were painted by Janice from CHB Face Painting. There were generous donations from the Waipawa Butcher, CHB Mitre 10, Stevenson and Taylor, Eva’s Cakes, JayC’s Beauty, St.Vincents and Oruawharo, John and Jo Ashworth, of Junctions Wines, Waipukurau Motor’s, Carters New World Waipukurau, Norsewood Knitting Factory, Norsewood Café and NZ Natural Clothing. These very generous donations made for a fantastic day.
Chairman's Report—September 2022
Lynn Cross organised a short run for the slower cars and a longer run for the faster cars, all ending up at Junction Wines to an excellent afternoon tea provided by the CHB Cancer Society ladies. At Junction Wines owned by John and Jo, we were entertained by Ex All Black John Ashworth and Ex All Black John Callesen with stories from their playing days. Sounds like they had a lot of fun and memories they will carry forever. An auction ran under the hammer of member Wayne McDonagh extracting money from all for the cause. Wine tasting was available with some still tasting when the sun went down, so a great day thanks to all that made it a huge success. The Cancer Society will do well out of the $4,478 raised. On Friday 26th August the Cancer Society held their annual cake stall. Raffles and daffodils sales at Ruahine Motors. Club members displayed their cars outside Ruahine Motors, thanks to Rod McKenzie, John Foote, Graham Cheer, Barry Smales, Ken Lyons, Neil Malcolm, and Kaye Carswell. Great photo opportunities. The CHB Council let the side down by not reserving parking spaces, in future we will supply the cones and reserve the spaces. Spring is here, daylight saving will start soon, so let’s get out and enjoy it.
Gary Weaver CHB Branch Chairman
The highlight in August has to be “The daffodil Car Show & Run” held in James Street on Sunday 21st. Sixty five cars were pre registered with thirteen more registering on the day. Five more arrived with donations and displayed their cars. There was a great variety of makes and models on display.
Jim Spicer won “Best Dressed Car” with his Vauxhall, Graham Cheer won “Beat Dressed Man” and Gloria Malcolmson “Best Dressed Lady”. Judged by CHB Counsellor Gerard Minehan. Thanks to Kaye Carswell and her organising team of Janet Weaver, Eva Gollan and Jean Hopping for dressing up and encouraging others to do the same for this great occasion.
Well here we are, spring has sprung, and new growth is starting to come through. Daffodils are looking fabulous, so maybe this will inspire members to come up with some ideas for the car club runs or interesting projects to visit.

The Thursday “Torque Heads” coffee and a scone outings, produce some interesting conversations and ideas. For some, morning tea runs into lunch.

Laurie's Lot—September 2022
Our September dinner and meeting has been cancelled with Manawatu, they are having a meeting the same night and using the speaker we were trying to get. We will have our own dinner and meeting in Septemberbut it will now be held in CHB.
Thursday's coffee and scones are still going well and the last 3 weeks have been at the Paper Mulberry. Check your emails every week to see where the next Thursday venue will be.
12
October's club dinner and meeting will be held on Wednesday 12th October instead of the Wednesday 19th, as quite a few members will be away on the East Cape Adventure.
Laurie Malcolmson CHB Branch Club Captain
Hi Everyone I hope you have all recovered from all the winter ill's that have been around. Sunday August 21st was the Rally for Cancer, most of the VCC Clubs around New Zealand took part. The days weather was perfect, much hotter and dryer than we had expected. There was also a great turnout of members with their families. This was a great reward for Kaye and her many helpers for all the hard work over many months to have such a successful day.
Don't forget there is a run on Sunday 25th September in Norsewood. This has been arranged by Henk and Ella Domper with the help of other members in the area. Emails have been sent to Club Members with Entry Form and Bank Account details to pay for the run.
Our Annual Veteran Rally is being held in Dannevirke on Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and on Sunday 20th November is our Annual Homestead Rally for all members. We still have a few details to finish for the Saturday and Sunday's Runs, all will be revealed soon and sent out to CHB members and also to other Clubs. This is the first time we have organised anything on this scale but we are very pleased with how it's going. I would like to thank Rod for his help and input with the Entry Form. I would also like to thank Gloria for putting all this together. I have stayed in the back ground.
We would like to welcome new members Stephen and Colleen Colliss who have a newly purchased Wolseley 1300 Auto. Stay Safe and Drive Carefully.

TheAndrewManchester.writes:actualtunnel driving, a full ten miles long, was complete and the job for Peter Tatt and I as his chainman, was to mark off the centre lines for concrete liner formwork as it progressed down the tunnel from North to South, and it had done only four miles when I got the job. So, the daily five mile run up the tunnel every morning, and being midwinter, I never ever saw daylight, with the exception of Thursdays.

The Boss man of the whole operation, Mr. Widdowson, lived in a pretty civilised house outside the bleak camp, but connected to its power and gas supplies. A keen motoring man, he quickly noticed my 12/50 Alvis amongst the few cars parked by the campsite and asked me up to his office. As a result of our motoring conversation, every Thursday, I drove Mrs. Widdowson the 10 miles of pretty rough going into the nearest town of Clithero to do her weekly shopping in their very nice 40HP RAC Armstrong Siddeley of about 1936 vintage. It had a close coupled sports saloon body and with preselector box and conventional clutch and handled very nicely on the very convoluted roads of those Yorkshire dales. Not only nice motoring but my only daylight sightings for about 3 months of Winter.

LaValla provides a secure site where veteran vehicles, modern cars and trailers can be safely parked for the duration. There is limited accommodation at LaValla, and more accommodation is also available at the nearby boutique Tuakau Hotel. Other options are the motels in Pukekohe and Pokeno. Rally Programme Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the West Coast, bounded to its South by the Waikato River. Built up areas, busy roads and steep roads will be avoided. The area offers great motoring country for veteran vehicles. To reach Tuakau and LaValla, those coming from the South can leave the Waikato Expressway (SH1) at Pokeno, just South of the Bombay Hills. Those coming from the north exit the motorway at Bombay. The registration fee covers: ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast; light refreshments at start and finish of each day’s run; three lunches; final banquet dinner; Movie Night (in the small cinema at LaValla); Rally Pack and plaque.

At the Tikokino Tavern. Around thirty people arrived for Coffee and a scone. The weather was great and everyone enjoyed the comradeship.
Bruce Turner a member of the CHB Branch of the VCC, has invited members to meet every Thursdays for coffee and a scone. This is a very good excuse to get your very special vehicle out of the shed and go for a nice drive to meet like minded people. Bruce would like to make this a regular event inviting everyone to just turn up every Thursday morning, meeting around 10.00am. Please check your email for any change of time and venue.

The Management Committee is seeking expressions of interest from Branches who think their corner of New Zealand would be ideal for the next Festival. By way of background, the Festival is not hosted or organised by a Branch. A Festival Director would be appointed by the Management Committee to run the event who would then select a committee for organising it. Closer to the time some assistance from Branch members may be required for specific tasks. What we are looking for
• A wide variety of roads (mainly off main highways) with interesting destinations. Ideally the Festival would be held within the next 5 years. What do we need from you
VERO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF HISTORIC MOTORING EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Driving our
The 2022 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring held in Taranaki was very successful on all counts, feedback from participants and the Executive of the VCC is that we should hold another.
• A region which has a variety of accommodation predominantly in reasonably close proximity to the festival venue (such as hotels, motels, Air BnB, camping grounds, school hostels). Realistically we would be looking for enough accommodation for say 1000 people (most of them couples) so approximately 450 to 500 accommodation units.
• Please feel free to have a chat with either myself, Greg or Gaynor Terrill at the AGM in August, or by phone if you’d like to know more.
• We invite Branches to put together a proposal showcasing their region and setting out information regarding accommodation, venues, roads and destinations as above.

• Send it to president@vcc.org.nz for consideration by 30 October 2022.

The story behind this sale is Philip Krueger and his wife Judy who hail from Texas, have a house in Napier and they have been coming here since the mid nineties for several months each year around Art Deco time. Both are keen swimmers and in 2018 they made a unique contribution to the Napier Aquatic Centre, meaning that over 65s who are Super Gold cardholders would be able to use the Napier Aquatic Centre for just $1 a time , however as Philip and Judy have not been able to get back for two and a half years the Council have now handed them a substantial bill, hence selling the car. They are open to offers and need to finalise the sale by mid Sept, when they head home. In Philip’s words “and as I say, any offer will be considered and all will go to pay our bill for the "Super Swim" with the Council”. ‘My phone here is: 029 0209 2562 if there are any questions. Ta for your help! Cheers!
